Poroshenko to Finnish media: Russia seeks to split EU, undermine its credibility

In an interview with Finnish media outlets Helsingin Sanomat and Iltalehti, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko noted that the EU countries benefited from the EU membership and only Russia wanted to split the EU, the presidential administration reported.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko plans a referendum on whether Ukraine should join the NATO alliance given polls that show 54 percent of Ukrainians now favor such a move, Germany's Funke Mediengruppe newspaper chain reported Thursday.

Ukraine and NATO accuse Russia of providing troops and weapons to support separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine in a conflict that seen 10,000 people killed since April 2014. Moscow denies the charges.

"Four years ago, only 16 percent (of the Ukrainian people) favored Ukraine's entry into NATO. Now it's 54 percent," the media group quoted Poroshenko as saying in an interview. "As president, I am guided by the views of my people, and I will hold a referendum on the issue of NATO membership."

He vowed to "do all I can to achieve membership in the transatlantic alliance" if the people voted in favor.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday called for Russia to use its "considerable influence" with the rebels to end the fighting in eastern Ukraine after a renewed surge in violence there.

NATO and Ukraine have had a close relationship since the early 1990s, and their ties are one of the "most substantial" of NATO's partnerships, according to the alliance's website.

However, any move by NATO to admit Ukraine would spark tensions with Russia, which says NATO already violated earlier promises by admitting Poland and other eastern European countries in the 1990s.

Poroshenko also predicted it would not take too long until Ukraine fulfilled the entry criteria to join the European Union. He said Kiev had reduced its budget deficit and inflation, and had taken important steps to reduce corruption.

"Europe should realize that it would be more secure, reliable and happier with Ukraine," he told the paper.

The EU last year spelled out limits to a landmark cooperation agreement with Ukraine to address Dutch concerns, but said the deal did not make Ukraine a candidate for EU membership.

Cohen teki tuosta analyysin tiistaina ja sen perusteella tilanne ei ole ollenkaan yksinkertainen siksi, että Trumpilla on edelleen vastassaan ns. war party, kuten muuten on myös Putinilla Moskovassa. Tämä pakoteasia ei ole Trumpin prioriteettien kärjessä, koska pakotteet eivät tosiasiassa haittaa Yhdysvaltoja. Venäjäkään ei odota asioiden edistyvän nopeasti, vaan ennakoivat tilanteen jo ainakin kuukausi takaperin. Pakotteista ei tarkoituksella puhuttu presidenttien lämminhenkiseksi kuvatun puhelun aikana, sillä se olisi asettanut kummankin presidentin vaikeaan asemaan omien joukkojensa edessä.

Tosiasiallisena ongelmana on nyt se, että tilanne Iranin kanssa kuumenee nopeasti. Myöskin USA-Kiina -suhteissa on hurjaa kitkaa ja nämä yhdessä voivat muuttua vaikeaksi kysymykseksi kahden ydinasesupervallan välille. Viimeisten vuosien jälkeen Venäjä tuskin tulee muuttamaan hyviä suhteitaan Kiinaan Yhdysvaltojen hyväksi.

Donald Trump: Teemme töitä rauhan saavuttamiseksi Venäjän ja Ukrainan välille

Yhdysvaltain presidentti puhui puhelimessa Ukrainan presidentti Petro Poroshenkon kanssa.

Yhdysvaltain presidentti Donald Trump sanoo, että hän on halukas työskentelemään sekä Kiovan että Moskovan kanssa Ukrainan konfliktin lopettamiseksi. Trump puhui aiheesta lauantaina puhelimessa Ukrainan presidentti Petro Poroshenkon kanssa, kertoo Telegraph.

Presidenttien välinen puhelu oli ensimmäinen Trumpin virkaanastujaisten jälkeen. Trumpin halut parantaa Yhdysvaltain välejä Vladimir Putinin ja Kremlinin kanssa on huolestuttanut Kiovaa. Lähes kolme vuotta kestänyt konflikti Ukrainassa on pysynyt ratkaisemattomana.

– Me tulemme työskentelemään Ukrainan, Venäjän ja muiden osapuolten kanssa, jotta he voivat saavuttaa rauhan, Trump sanoi puhelun jälkeen antamassaan lausunnossa.

Poroshenkon edustajat kertoivat, että keskustelussa puhuttiin erityisesti tilanteen vakauttamisesta Donbassissa ja rauhan saavuttamisesta poliittisin ja diplomaattisin keinoin.

Luganskin kansatasavallan armeijan joukoissa palveleva suomalainen vapaaehtoinen, Petri "Vili" Viljakainen, haavoittui toissayönä etulinjassa Donbassissa. Hän sai oikeaan olkapäähänsä osuman sirpaleesta, joka oli lähtöisin ukrainalaisesta panssarintorjuntaohjuksesta. "Olin hemmetin onnekas," Vili kertoi DONi News Agencylle.


"Olin etulinjassa kolme viikkoa ja se oli raskas ja pitkä vuoro. Ja sitten, eilen illalla, vain muutama tunti ennen vuoron loppua, ukrainalaiset joukot osuivat minuun. Luulen sirpaleen olevan raskaasta panssarintorjuntaohjuksesta, mutta se saattaa olla myös rynnäkköpanssarivaunun [ammuksesta]," Viljakainen kertoi sairaalavuoteelta sunnuntaina.

Haavoittuminen tapahtui noin klo 23:00 lauantai-iltana ja hänet evakuoitiin tämän jälkeen välittömästi sairaalaan. Lääkärit sairaalassa sanovat, että sirpalehaava Vilin kädessä paranee ja tämän jälkeen hän kykenee käyttämään kättään normaalisti.


"Luganskin asemissa on ollut hyvin raskasta viime viikkoina. Ukrainalaiset todella yrittävät tappaa meidät siellä," Vili sanoi. "Joka päivä ja yö he tulittavat meitä ja tilanne on kireä."

Vili sanoi, että hän oli "hemmetin onnekas" vaikka hän haavoittui vain muutama tunti ennen vuoron loppumista. While live on the TV channel "Inter," Sergey Kaplin, a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada from the Petro Poroshenko Bloc, called on the Ukrainian population to prepare for a protracted war.

"Let's resume preparations for the civil defense of our population. Today we should honestly tell our people that no Minsk Agreements, no negotiations, and no geopolitical shifts in the world will lead to a stabilization of the situation. We should learn to live in a state of war or semi-war for the next few years. The country should be prepared for these challenges," Kaplin stated.

Kaplin was supported by international affairs analyst Aleksandr Sushko, who added: "We should honestly tell the people waiting who sincerely believe that the war could end and that normal life will return in six months - tell them that normal life will not return in the coming years, and maybe this extraordinary situation will continue for decades."


Before his election in May 2014, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko promised to end the war in Donbass within two weeks.

First one was Aleksandr Bednov, aka "Batman", a Russian citizen, ex-military, who headed an elite volunteer unit

Killed along with a bunch of his guys in a mysterious ambush in Donetsk in January 2015. He had previously expressed loud disagreements with the separatist leadership Moscow was installing in Donetsk and Lugansk, with their supposed corruption and, especially on social media, Bednov and others from his unit (which was made up of Slavic ultranationalists and neo Nazis btw) ranted against ethnic minority, especially Muslim volunteers from Caucasus and ex-Soviet Central Asia going to Donbass. They didn't want the "darkies" involved in what they saw as a "white", Slavic conflict. After Bednov's assassination, his unit returned to Russia and disbanded.

Then, Alexei Mozgovoi

Local man, from Lugansk region. He headed the "Prizrak" ("Ghost") Brigade within the LNR. Mozgovoi was a Cossack by blood, and his Brigade had many Cossacks, both locals and Russian volunteers. He had a large armed force behind him, and was a charismatic leader, who attracted a great following among civilians in Lugansk. The official, Moscow-approved rebel leadership might have seen him as a threat. So, dude had to go. Killed in an ambush of his motorcade, on outskirts of Lugansk, on May 23rd, 2015. Shortly thereafter, majority of his units submitted to the authority of the central LNR leadership, under Igor Plotnitsky, and took up the flag of the newly formed separatist military.

Pavel Dryomov

Prominent Cossack militia commander, close ally of Mozgovoi, who refused to recognize the authority of LNR and even made a video address calling upon other Cossacks to come and fight Plotnitsky to avenge Mozgovoi. Killed December 12, 2015, as the photo says, blown up in his car. After, most of his men also joined the LNR forces.

The elimination of Mozgovoi and Dryomov removed the Cossacks as a separate force in Lugansk, and allowed Igor Plotnitsky to assume, with Putin's approval, I am betting, total and supreme authority over the rebel forces of the LNR

Well, there is a theory going about: Trump is going to offer Putin a deal on Ukraine: removal of any Russian forces, military regulars or volunteers, and general peaceful settlement negotiation in Donbass; in turn for recognition of Crimea as Russian territory and lifting of sanctions.

Later, a well known Ukrainian oligarch also said Kiev needs to make such a compromise with Russia: Pinchuk proposes Crimea trade for Donbas peace, drawing harsh criticism

He got much scorn for that in Ukraine, as the article says lol

But then, their own national heroine, Nadiya Savchenko, a former military pilot and solider in Ukrainian army who got captured by rebels in Donbass and later spent time in a Russian prison before Putin pardoned her and she was exchanged for a couple (alleged) Russian special forces officers captured by the Ukrainians in Donbass, now this lady also began singing the same tune!

Looks more and more like this deal will indeed happen. And the Kremlin has began purging those in Donbass they see as potentially problematic fanatics, like Givi, who could screw up the process.

Itse olen netistä katsonut varmasti kymmeniä Givin haastatteluja, mies kun oli yksi kapinallisten "tähdistä" jota kuvattiin koko ajan, vaikka kyseessä saattoi olla sotarikollinen niin hän oli videioitten perusteella kuitenkin hyvä tyyppi, entinen kauppakeskuksen vartija Donetsk:sta joka nousi merkittäväksi komentajaksi. Kuoli vielä perheettömänä ilman lapsia. Ei voi muuta sanoa kuin R.I.P.

Tästä mielenkiintoisen asetelman tekeekin jatkuva jännite, jossa EU on Euroopan mantereella Yhdysvaltojen haukkojen ja ekspansiopolitiikan bulvaani. EU tahtoo alkaa Euroopan Yhdysvalloiksi, joksi se aikoinaan suunniteltiinkin, mikä tarkoittaa jatkuvaa valtioliiton yhdellä suulla ulkopolitiikasta puhumista. Periferian kuten Suomen talous ja elinkeinorakenne ovat tässä kamppailussa ilmaa. EU on käytännössä sama kuin Saksan tahto, koska Ranskan tahto on alisteinen Saksan ylijäämäbudjetin nyöreille.

Suomelle kävi viimeksikin hyvin heikosti 1918, kun Suomen kauppa alistettiin Saksan rautaiseen kontrolliin, jossa Saksa päätti Suomen suhteista kolmansiin maihin kauppapolitiikassa. Perussuomalaisten europarlamentaarikko Jussi Halla-aho toivoo, että Venäjää vastaan otetaan käyttöön nykyistä voimakkaammat pakotteet. Halla-ahon mukaan on selvää, että pakotteet vahingoittavat Suomea ja Eurooppaa, mutta Venäjän toimiin Ukrainassa on pakko vastata. Studio Kulmapöydässä vierailleen Halla-ahon mukaan on EU:n heikkous, että jäsenmaat ajattelevat lyhytnäköisesti omia kansallisia intressejään.

In furious telephone call with German Chancellor Angela Merkel Russian President Vladimir Putin accuses Ukraine of using Normandy format sponsored by Merkel to conceal its military aggression in eastern Ukraine.

The discussion focused on the situation in southeastern Ukraine, which recently deteriorated due to Ukraine's provocative actions. The parties expressed serious concern over the escalating armed conflict, which has caused human fatalities and significant destruction of the civil infrastructure and residential areas in several Donbass towns.

Vladimir Putin drew Angela Merkel's attention to the data of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission as well as statements by official Kiev representatives, which indicate attempts by the Ukrainian security forces to change the situation at the contact line in their favour by military means. It is becoming obvious that Kiev officials are trying to sabotage the execution of the Minsk Agreements and use the Normandy format to conceal their destructive acts.

President Putin and Chancellor Merkel spoke for restoring the ceasefire immediately and supported the efforts of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission in this context.

The parties agreed to intensify diplomatic efforts to assist with the peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis. In particular, this includes contacts between foreign ministers and the leaders' aides within the Normandy format in the earliest possible timeframe, and subsequent discussions of the situation at the top level.

The official, Moscow-approved rebel leadership might have seen him as a threat. So, dude had to go. Killed in an ambush of his motorcade, on outskirts of Lugansk, on May 23rd, 2015. Shortly thereafter, majority of his units submitted to the authority of the central LNR leadership, under Igor Plotnitsky, and took up the flag of the newly formed separatist military.

Pavel Dryomov

Prominent Cossack militia commander, close ally of Mozgovoi, who refused to recognize the authority of LNR and even made a video address calling upon other Cossacks to come and fight Plotnitsky to avenge Mozgovoi. Killed December 12, 2015, as the photo says, blown up in his car. After, most of his men also joined the LNR forces.

The elimination of Mozgovoi and Dryomov removed the Cossacks as a separate force in Lugansk, and allowed Igor Plotnitsky to assume, with Putin's approval, I am betting, total and supreme authority over the rebel forces of the LNR

The Russian Investigative Committee says it has received rock-solid proof that Kiev's armed forces have been using weapons of mass destruction against civilians in eastern Ukraine.

The office of the Russian State Investigative Committee, dealing with crimes involving the use of prohibited means and methods of warfare, has discovered and procedurally documented irrefutable evidence that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have been using weapons of mass destruction, namely the Tochka-U tactical missile complexes [SS-21 Scarab in NATO classification] against civilians in the armed conflict in the south-east of Ukraine," the investigative committee said in a statement published on its official website on Monday.

The committee also stated that the Tochka-U can fire a wide range of missiles, both conventional and non-conventional, nuclear or chemical.

"According to the investigation data, the Ukrainian military used missiles equipped with high-explosive fragmentation and cluster charges against the civilian population of Donbass," the committee stated, noting that one such high-explosive warhead produces up to 14,500 fragments, scattering them over an area of up to three hectares. The cluster rocket produces even more fragments – up to 15,800 pieces – ensuring damage to manpower and soft-skinned vehicles in an open area ranging from 3.5 to 7 hectares.

"Such weapons [as the Tochka-U] can be classified as weapons of mass destruction, having an extremely high destructive power over a large area. They are intended for causing mass casualties and damage to large spaces and aim to injure an unlimited number of people in the affected area. International treaties prohibit the use of weapons which leave no chance of survival for both belligerents and civilians during armed clashes or armed conflicts. The use of such indiscriminate weapons simultaneously entails the loss and injury of civilians and excessive damage to civilian objects," the committee added, stressing that in using these weapons, the Ukrainian Army is in violation of the Minsk agreements, as well as the Geneva Convention on the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War.

The use of such weapons shows that authorities in Kiev pursues the goal of total annihilation of the population and infrastructure in the country's south-east," the committee concluded

Russian Nationalist Writer Creates Battalion To 'Liberate' Ukraine

Ever since fighting broke out in the summer of 2014, the Ukrainian conflict has attracted a range of colorful characters — from idealists through to violent criminals. Thousands have died, some have left, others have left their minds.

But with fighting once again flaring up in the Donbass, it seems a new character is eager to enter the fray. His name is Zakhar Prilepin, and he is a famous Russian writer.

In an interview published by the Komsomolskaya Pravda daily on Feb. 13, Prilepin announced the formation of a volunteer battalion in the self-declared People's Republic of Donetsk, one of two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine.

"Literature is not the reason I am here," Prilepin said during the interview. "The division was created on my initiative. We will ride on a white horse into any town we've abandoned."

Prilepin's reference to "abandoned" towns presumably includes towns beyond current contact lines.


A nationalist writer and a longstanding member of the banned National Bolshevik Party, Prilepin came to prominence during the 1990s. He was a riot police (OMON) officer, and then served several combat tours during the first Chechen war and associated conflicts. In 2000, Prilepin turned his hand to writing and journalism, working for publications across the political spectrum. In 2010, he signed a letter to Putin urging him to stand down, but in 2014 reconsidered his views and is now an ardent Kremlin loyalist.

Though he founded the battalion, Prilepin is not first, but second in command. He holds the rank of major within the group, an unrecognized military unit.

Asked by the interviewer if taking up arms somehow compromised his status as a writer, Prilepin was unapologetic. "I am an officer," he said, "here I do not consider myself to be a writer."

Many famous writers fought in World War Two, Prilepin continued: "All of these amazing comrades like [Soviet writers] Konstantin Simonov and Yevgeny Dolmatovsky. They all wrote. They all carried arms. They all had ranks."

The Kremlin has traditionally distanced itself from Russian nationals fighting in Ukraine. The evidence, however, indicates that at various points during the conflict, such fighters were encouraged and assisted in joining the fight.

Speaking at a daily briefing on Monday, Feb. 13,. Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists he would not comment on the Prilepin's motivation.

"Russian citizens follow their hearts and go to these unrecognized republics. I can only state this as a fact," he said.
