Kuluvana vuonna Englannin kanaalin on ylittänyt jo noin 4000 laitonta maahantunkeutujaa. Salakuljettajat rokottavat matkasta sellaisen 2000–3000 euroa per nuppi, joten liikevaihtoa lienee tähän mennessä kertynyt kymmenenisen miljoonaa.

Active Patriotin videolta saa käsityksen millaisilla kaukaloilla tämä suunnilleen 35 kilometrin ylitys tehdään.

Suosituin rikoksentekoväline on noin kolmemetrinen kumivene. Halvimmillaan sellainen lähtee 350 eurolla, ja tonnilla saa jo ihan kunnollisen.

Sitten vielä moottori. Videon perusteella arvelisin että siellä perässä on 20–30 hevosvoiman mylly. Sellaisesta joutuu maksamaan ehkä 3000–5000 euroa.

Ylläsanotusta voi päätellä että tarvitaan kahdesta kolmeen matkustajaa kattamaan kiinteät kustannukset. Tämän jälkeen loppu on voittoa. Ja noissa kumiveneissä kulkee kerrallaan sellainen tusinan verran läpsyjä. Ei huono bisnes.

Vastarinta Doverissa kasvaa pikkuhiljaa. Tänään paikalla oli useampi kuvaaja ja muutama vanhempi britti, joilla oli sana hallussaan. Kunniansa saivat kuulla sisäministeri ja rajavartijat ynnä poliisi, joka sangen ponnettomasti esti pääsyn rekkojen käyttämälle alueelle.

Satamaan saattoi mennä kenenkään estämättä laskemaan päivän kumivenesaldo. Rajavartijat luimistelivat talutellen matuja peremmälle, mutta olivat selkeästi puolustuskannalla. Active Patriotin video oli kerännyt kahdeksan ja puoli tuhatta näyttökertaa neljässä tunnissa.

Viralliselta taholta – joka tähän mennessä on peitellyt parhaansa mukaan laittomien maahantunkeutujien virtaa ja luksusmajoitusta – alkaa puntti tutisemaan. Hallitus lupailee ilmavalvontaa kanaalin ylle samoin kuin väläyttelee laivaston käyttöä tunkeilijoiden käännyttämiseksi takaisin Ranskaan sekä tiukennuksia lainsäädäntöön. Nähtäväksi jää syntyykö tästä mitään konkreettista.

At least 25 per cent of illegal boat migrants claiming to be minors are in fact over the age of 18, Kent Country Council (KCC) has revealed.

Over the past five years, over 400 of the 1,668 boat migrants who told immigration officials that they were children after crossing the English Channel from France in small rubber boats were later revealed to be adults.

A source at Kent County Council (KCC) told The Telegraph: "Following age assessment around 25 per cent are assessed as being 18 or over. They will then almost definitely appeal this through the courts and KCC pays all of the legal fees."

The true figure is likely higher, as it is British policy not to challenge migrants' alleged age unless they look over 25, and, unlike in some other European countries, tests such as dental checks are not conducted to verify their likely age range.

Adult migrants have often tried to fraudulently claim they were minors in order to bolster their chances of being granted asylum status in the United Kingdom.

Border Force officials have detained 223 migrants in 18 dinghies after they crossed the English Channel to reach the UK on Monday - as French authorities stopped another 106 people making the crossing.

More migrants have been setting out from the coast of France while the weather is warm in a desperate attempt to reach the UK before autumn. 

It comes after 21 migrants made the journey across the Channel to the UK over the weekend in two separate crossings.

Yesterday's arrivals meant at least 5,800 refugees have now successfully made it to the UK this year.

The Home Office released official numbers late on Monday night relating to the treacherous crossings.

Dan O'Mahoney, Clandestine Channel Threat Commander, said he has been working with counterparts in France to 'make this route completely unviable'.

They also revealed a further 106 people in eight boats were stopped by French authorities before they could get into UK waters.

Mr O'Mahoney said: 'These crossings are facilitated by criminals willing to risk people's lives for money.

'France is a safe country with a fully functioning asylum system - those seeking refuge can and should claim asylum there.

'I continue to work with my counterparts in France on a daily basis to make this route completely unviable, and this morning the French stopped more migrants leaving the coastline - though I recognise the number still reaching the UK remains too high.

'We continue to return those who do not have a legitimate asylum claim despite barriers to removals under the Dublin Regulations and legal challenges.'

The zodiac-style craft was spotted just after 9am on Monday and towed back to port by coast guard cruiser Nordet.

A similar boat containing 16 people, including five women and four children, had also suffered engine failure.

They were collected by coastguard patroller Jacques Oudart Fourmentin and brought back to border officers at Dunkirk West port.

Pictures showed a group of four men wearing jackets and backpacks perched either side of their inflatable boat using huge shovels as makeshift oars to paddle across the Channel.

Two migrants were also found suffering hypothermia on board a boat spotted by a passing ferry.

The speed of the developments over the past seven days has left many of those residents, nearly two-thirds of who are retired, reeling in shock.

Many in their seventies and eighties have been left in a state of confusion, not clued up on social media and left waiting for information by phone or post.

To understand how people feel in Penally first of all requires an understanding of the village itself.

The converted barracks aren't just near the village, the boundary fence quite literally acts as garden boundaries for many houses in Penally Heights. Residents can hear conversations on the other side and some can even see right into the cabins from their bedroom windows.

It's a place where people are happy to leave their door unlocked while they pop over to their neighbour for a chat or let their children disappear for the afternoon on bikes and scooters.

The village hall and church are the focal point for the community, as well as the community shop and the two pubs. There are few other facilities.

Tourism is a major part of the economy here and Penally is just a mile from Tenby, the "jewel in the crown of Wales' tourism", said resident Michael Williams.

Mr Williams has lived in Penally with his wife, Denise, for eight years. He can't understand why the MoD facility is being converted in the heart of Pembrokeshire's tourist attractions.

"This will affect tourism, without a doubt," he said.

His house is towards the top of the estate immediately next door to the Penally camp. The barbed wire perimeter fence of the compound peeps over his garden wall and every window of his family home looks into the camp.

The couple have a small annex which they let out to holiday makers. "Who's going to want to come here on holiday now?" he asked. "My wife won't want to stay in the house on her own and we've hardly slept with worry since it was announced."

Mrs Williams agreed. "We are devastated," she said. "I've had some elderly neighbours calling me in tears down the phone.

"This is nothing to do with racism, this is about our rights."

The Home Office has confirmed it will provide onsite security for the camp, saying: "However, these people are not being detained so they are able to leave the site if they wish. We will be providing all their meals and wellbeing services onsite so we would anticipate they have limited need to leave the site."

On Monday, Simon Hart, MP for South Pembrokeshire, said the capacity of the asylum centre had been "down scaled slightly" from the originally-planned 250 to 234 to comply with Covid-19 regulations.

2020-09-30 The Sun: Home Office using 90 hotels to house migrants — including 4-star accommodation

The accommodation - which includes high-end four-star rated hotels - is part of a £4 billion ten-year contract between the Home Office and three outsourcing giants - including Serco. The other firms are Mears and Clearsprings.

Serco won a contract for around £1.9 billion for providing accommodation for migrants, which it boasted was the biggest in its history.

The Home Office said the use of sites such as former barracks could save taxpayers up to 50 per cent of the cost of hotel placements.

Documents seen by Guardian suggest Foreign Office officials are pushing back at proposals for processing claims in detention facilities overseas

Downing Street has asked officials to consider the option of sending asylum seekers to Moldova, Morocco or Papua New Guinea and is the driving force behind proposals to hold refugees in offshore detention centres, according to documents seen by the Guardian.

The Financial Times reported on Wednesday that the home secretary, Priti Patel, asked officials to consider processing asylum seekers Ascension and St Helena, which are overseas British territories. Home Office sources were quick to distance Patel from the proposals and Downing Street has also played down Ascension and St Helena as destinations for asylum processing centres.

However, the documents seen by the Guardian suggest the government has for weeks been working on "detailed plans" that include cost estimates of building asylum detention camps on the south Atlantic islands, as well as other proposals to build such facilities in Moldova, Morocco and Papua New Guinea.

The documents suggest the UK's proposals would go further than Australia's hardline system, which is "based on migrants being intercepted outside Australian waters", allowing Australia to claim no immigration obligations to individuals. The UK proposals, the documents state, would involve relocating asylum seekers who "have arrived in the UK and are firmly within the jurisdiction of the UK for the purposes of the ECHR and Human Rights Act 1998".

The documents suggest that the idea that Morocco, Moldova and Papua New Guinea might make suitable destinations for UK asylum processing centres comes directly from Downing Street, with documents saying the three countries were specifically "suggested" and "floated" by No 10. One document says the request for advice on third country options for detention facilities came from "the PM".

The Times reported that the government was also giving serious consideration to the idea of creating floating asylum centres in disused ferries moored off the UK coast.

While composed in the restrained language of civil servants, the Foreign Office advice contained in the documents appears highly dismissive of the ideas emanating from Downing Street, pointing out numerous legal, practical and diplomatic obstacles to processing asylums seekers oversees. The documents state that:

• Plans to process asylum seekers at offshore centres in Ascension or St Helena would be "extremely expensive and logistically complicated" given the remoteness of the islands. The estimated cost is £220m build cost per 1,000 beds and running costs of £200m. One document adds: "In relation to St Helena we will need to consider if we are willing to impose the plan if the local government object."

• The "significant" legal, diplomatic and practical obstacles to the plan include the existence of "sensitive military installations" on the island of Ascension. One document warns that the military issues mean the "will mean US government would need to be persuaded at the highest levels, and even then success cannot be guaranteed".

• It is "highly unlikely" that any north African state, including Morocco, would agree to hosting asylum seekers relocated to the UK. "No north African country, Morocco included, has a fully functioning asylum system," one document states. "Morocco would not have the resources (or the inclination) to pay for a processing centre."

• Seeming to dismiss the idea of sending asylum seekers to Moldova, Foreign Office officials point out there is protracted conflict in the eastern European country over Transnistria as well as "endemic" corruption. They add: "If an asylum centre depended on reliable, transparent, credible cooperation from the host country justice system we would not be able to rely on this."

• Officials warned of "significant political and logistical obstacles" to sending asylum seekers to Papua New Guinea, pointing out it is more than 8,500 miles away, has a fragile public health system and is "one of the bottom few countries in the world in terms of medical personnel per head of population". They also warn any such a move would "renew scrutiny of Australia's own offshore processing". One document adds: "Politically, we judge the chances of positive engagement with the government on this to be almost nil."

Human rights groups demand action over the 'unsanitary and unsuitable' former barracks converted by the Home Office

The squalid conditions inside former military barracks hastily converted into refugee camps are revealed for the first time today amid mounting opposition to the Home Office move.

Images of the "unsanitary and unsuitable" living quarters inside the disused army training camps show crowded dormitories where it appears challenging to socially distance. The British Red Cross said that the Ministry of Defence sites, surrounded by barbed wire and high fences, were not fit to house vulnerable and traumatised asylum seekers who had fled conflict.

So far two sites – in Penally, Pembrokeshire, and Folkestone, Kent – which together could house more than 600 asylum seekers while their claims are being processed, have been converted.

Jon Featonby, policy and advocacy manager for the British Red Cross, said many of the asylum seekers may have been imprisoned by their government or non-state actors in their country of origin and that being held indefinitely inside such bases would not be healthy.

Over 7,500 Illegal Boat Migrants Arrived in Britain This Year

Following the arrival of 100 more illegal aliens on Monday, the total number of illegal migrants recorded to have reached British shores rose to a record 7,532, more than four times the number of migrants in 2019.

Since the beginning of the month, some 403 boat migrants have successfully crossed the Channel, according to the Daily Mail. In September, a monthly record of 1,954 landed in Britain.

In July, the mass migration sceptic think-tank Migration Watch UK predicted that — based on arrival trends at the time — between 7,500 and 7,600 migrants would reach the country by Christmas.

The frenzied pace of illegal migration has seen that prediction come true two months earlier than expected.

In response to the latest grim milestone, Executive Director of Migration Watch UK Ben Greening said: "There has been a massive surge in illegal crossings in the past few months with nearly six times the number of arrivals as we saw at this point last year."

Firstly, the think tank called for the government to broker a deal with the French, that would "ensure that anyone setting off is immediately returned" to France.

Second, the pressure group said that the government should substantially increase the number of deportations for those who have "no right to be here, including failed asylum seekers".

Finally, Migration Watch said that Parliament should change the laws on immigration to reduce "pull factors" for migrants, such as free housing for asylum seekers and cutting the taxpayer-funded allowances for migrants seeking asylum in the UK.

What's happened?

Another tragedy in European waters

Rasul (35), Shiva (35), Anita (9), Armin (6), Artin (1), a Kurdish family of five from Iran attempted to cross the Channel last Tuesday. Like 7400 others before them this year they braved the cold waters in search of safety and dignity. They did not make it.

This tragic loss of life leaves us saddened and angry. The fate of this desperate family was not decided by the cold waters or their unseaworthy boat. Their fate was sealed by the insistence of European leaders to hold on to flawed and heartless policies that aim to deter refugees from seeking asylum in Europe at all costs.

The lack of safe and legal routes to seeking asylum in European countries means asylum seekers and refugees are forced to undertake life-threatening journeys where they face violence, abuse and sometimes death. This has been observed from the Aegean to the Channel, the Mediterranean to the Balkans.

It doesn't have to be this way.

Viable and compassionate solutions that provide safe and legal passage to refugees exist: community sponsorship initiatives, family reunification, opportunities for skilled migration, labour mobility and education.

From 8pm on October 31st to 8pm on November 3rd we call for a vigil to remember all victims of the systematic violence along Europe's borders and to send a clear message to European leaders that enough is enough. Now is the time to stop looking away. Now is the time to take responsibility.

Enpä olisi keksinyt huonompaa esimerkkiä, mutta olihan näiden pakko kampanjoida, kun saatiin viimein kuolleita ja oikein perhe lapsineen.

Perhe oli jo Euroopassa ja olisi voinut hakea turvapaikkaa lukuisista Euroopan maista matkansa varrelta. Kukaan ei ilmeisesti estänyt perheeltä EU-alueelle tuloa ja Euroopassa vaeltelua. Oli perheen oma päätös kieltäytyä turvapaikan hakemisesta ja jatkaa matkaa laittomina siirtolaisina. Ihmissalakuljettajille maksamillaan tuhansilla euroilla perhe olisi voinut elää mukavasti Euroopan ulkopuolella, mutta päättivät investoida tulevaisuuteen.

Myöskään kampanjassa esitetyt "lailliset reitit" (sponsoroitu oleskelulupa, perheenyhdistäminen, työlupa, opiskeluun perustuva oleskelulupa) ja niiden lisääminen tuskin olisivat auttaneet kyseistä perhettä, mutta ne maksavat Euroopalle valtavasti sekä taloudellisesti että yhteiskunnallisesti. Iranissa asuva kurdiperhe ei olisi säälipisteissä ensimmäisenä sponsoroijien listoilla, mutta taatusti ensimmäisenä tukia saamassa.

The Guardianin jutussa ei kerrota, miksi perhe ei voinut jäädä Iraniin tai matkan varrella Turkkiin tai edes aiempiin EU-maihin. Kyse ei kuvauksesta päätellen ollut edes turvapaikkaa tarvitsevista, vaan perhe oli malliesimerkki elintasopakolaisista, isä matalapalkkainen työläinen ja äiti työtön. Sukulaisilta kuitenkin löytyi lähtömaan palkkatasoon suhteutettuna valtavat rahat ihmissalakuljettajille.

Jutussa kerrotaan myös, että perhettä varoitettiin etukäteen Ison-Britannian matkan vaarallisuudesta ja lasten vaarantamisesta, mutta äiti ei piitannut siitä, koska "kaikkihan sinne menevät". Perhe uskoi, että heille annettaisiin asunto ja työpaikka, josta maksettaisiin ainakin sata puntaa (!) päivässä.

Four Iranians who died crossing Channel were part of same family

Four Iranian Kurds who died trying to cross the Channel in high winds were members of one family who paid smugglers thousands of euros after two failed attempts to reach Britain, the Guardian has been told.

Speaking from Sardasht, Iran Nezhad's brother Khalil said he had last heard from the family two days ago. He said they had crossed from Iran into Turkey during the summer before proceeding through Europe to France.

A representative from Hengaw said the family had attempted to enter the UK by train twice but failed both times, and so decided to pay a smuggler to take them by sea.

Iran Nezhad was a low-paid labourer while his wife was unemployed, and they sought to escape economic hardship, Khalil Iran Nezhad said.

A friend of the family in Calais, who asked to be called Ali, said he had met the family about a month ago and spoken with Panahi in the lead-up to their departure for the UK. "Shiva and I were talking about the issues with going to England," he said. "I told her: 'This is way too dangerous, you have children. Do you think they can survive in the water if, God forbid, something happens?' And she said, 'It's OK, we will do it. Everyone is going there, it's not a problem.'"

He said the family paid a smuggler about €5,000 to €6,000 to take them on the boat. "Shiva told me they didn't have enough money to pay the smuggler and she asked her parents and parents-in-law. They sold gold and valuables for them to pay the smugglers and they prepared the money."

The family believed they would receive accommodation in the UK and could find work paying at least £100 a day, he added.

Ali added: "They took a boat from Turkey to Italy then they were in Italy for 20 days because of Covid, then France."

Iranian Kurds, who make up about 10% of Iran's population, report facing significant discrimination in housing and employment as well as political repression, according to human rights monitors, with a UN special rapporteur estimating in 2017 that almost half of the country's political prisoners belonged to the ethnic minority. Kurdish regions of Iran are some of the poorest and least developed areas in the country and have been hit hard by a recent economic downturn exacerbated by US sanctions.

The deaths have reignited the debate over the UK's asylum policy and led to renewed calls from humanitarian organisations for "safe and legal" routes to the UK for asylum seekers.

More than 7,400 people have arrived in the UK in small boats this year, according to analysis by PA Media, nearly four times as many as in 2019, with a record 416 arriving on a single day, 2 September. Seven migrants have died trying to cross the Channel this year, three more than last year's total death toll from crossings.

Groups such as Safe Passage, Amnesty and Choose Love/Help Refugees have warned that the UK government's hardline approach, which focuses largely on physically obstructing the crossings, will not deter migrants from attempting the dangerous journey.

Safe alternatives such as cross-border family reunion arrangements are the best way to reduce the number of attempted crossings, the groups have said, although as recently as last week the UK government rejected amendments to its immigration bill that would have ensured that rights under British law to family reunion continued after the Brexit transition period.

UN urges UK to restart refugee scheme after Channel deaths

The UN has urged the UK government to restart its refugee settlement scheme following the deaths of an Iranian-Kurdish family who drowned while trying to cross the English Channel earlier this week.

Rasul Iran Nezhad, his wife Shiva Mohammad Panahi and two of their children died when a boat carrying refugees capsized off the coast of France on Tuesday.

The incident led to calls for the UK to create safe, legal methods for migrants to travel to Britain.

One option is a potential upgrade to the UK global resettlement scheme, which transfers refugees from an asylum country to Britain for permanent settlement. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) monitors and grants refugee status.

The scheme, suspended amid the coronavirus pandemic, normally settles about 5,000 refugees per year in Britain.

"The UNHCR hopes that resettlement to the UK will restart soon, once reception capacity is confirmed and any remaining logistical issues related to the pandemic are overcome by the authorities," said UNHCR UK representative Rossella Pagliuchi-Lor.

"The tragic events in the Channel this week demonstrate the need for concerted international efforts to address the complex root causes of displacement. Reopening and expanding legal pathways for more refugees to come to the UK in safety is one tangible way that this country can help."

There are other options that the UK government can consider, including cross-border family reunions, which are the best way to reduce Channel crossings, UNHCR-associated groups have said.

Four members of a Kurdish-Iranian family who paid people smugglers £21,600 for a new life in Britain drowned while trying to cross the Channel - after a relative 'begged' them not to go, it emerged today.

Construction worker Rasoul Iran-Nejad, 35, his wife Shiva Mohammad Panahi, 35, along with Anita, nine, and Armin, six, perished after the crammed sightseeing boat they were travelling in capsized in rough conditions, with winds of up to 57mph and five-foot waves.

Their toddler son, Artin, is yet to be found, BBC Persian reported, but French officials have called off searches and said there is no hope of finding any more survivors. Two migrant adults are also reportedly still missing.

Mr Iran-Nejad had sold everything in the hope of achieving a better future for his family, his brother, Khalil Irannazhad, said in a phone call from their home city of Sardasht in western Iran, near the Iraqi border.

Mr Irannazhad said he last spoke to his brother on Monday, when he urged him not to attempt the crossing.  'We begged him to not try to cross by boat but he insisted on going,' he told the Telegraph.

Iraqi-Kurd Choman Manish, 37, said that the 'beautiful friendly family' had told him of plans to join others on a small boat on Tuesday morning - but he too advised them not to go by boat.

He told them: 'It's not good and a really bad situation if you stay in the water,' Sky News reports.

Mr Manish said: 'I said, it will be bad for you. They told me God is big. I know God is big, but what can I do.

'I told them many times, but they never accepted my word... They trusted in God, they think God will protect them.'

An Iranian Family's Dream of a Better Life Died in the English Channel

Rasoul was a construction worker, and his wife Shiva took care of the children. Financial destitution had pushed them to emigrate from Iran with their three young children in tow.

A relative of Rasoul told IranWire that the family had traveled to Urmia, the capital of West Azerbaijan, in the hope of crossing the border into Turkey. Their first attempt failed, so they went home and returned in the summer to try again. It took them five days in total to cross the border, after which they had planned to take a boat from Turkey to Greece. But when they arrived, the boat was faulty, and the family were forced to wait in Turkey.

"They stayed in Turkey for almost another whole month, then tried again," the family member told IranWire. "They came to Italy on a boat. They were quarantined in Italy for 20 days, and then they went to France."

The family made their way directly to the forests of northern France, where many other migrants had taken refuge before them. But they were rounded up by police and taken to an asylum seeker camp. They spent around 20 days in the country in total.  "Every day, they said they were going to cross the channel," the relative said. "We told them to stay in France but they were adamant that they wanted to get to the UK.

"We were in touch every day. The night before the crossing, they called us. We told them not to go by sea. But they said they had tried to catch a train several times, and each time police had returned them to the camp. On the last night they sent an audio message, telling us that they were boarding the boat."

An Iranian acquaintance of the Iran Nejad family from the camp in northern France told IranWire about their last night on French soil. "Our camp is near the port of Calais," he said, "and whenever the police pick up refugees in the forests they bring them to this place or another camp in the city of Arras.

"On the Tuesday night they all went to 'game it' from Dunkirk. But instead they all drowned. I wish to God there were some way to tell everybody that there's nothing going on in Britain; don't risk the lives of your children."

Rasoul and Shiva had borrowed money from extended family members to pay the people-smugglers in France. "They didn't have enough money themselves," the Iranian refugee said, "so their relatives gave what they could. They sold their jewelry and gold. They wanted to escape the miserable economic situation in Sardasht and get to the UK to build a better future for their children."
