Meritaksi Ocean Vikingin taakka tuodaan kv-merialueelta Maltalle sen asevoimien aluksilla taas kerran, jotta tämäkin meritaksi voi heti jatkaa ihmissalakuljetusta. Taakka jaetaan sitten kuuteen EU-maahan (Ranska, Saksa, Irlanti, Luxemburg, Portugali ja Romania), eikä yksikään tietenkään jää Maltalle. The 356 migrants who have been stranded on an NGO vessel for 13 days will be landing in Malta and re-distributed to six other European Union states, the Maltese government said.

Following discussions with the European Commission and a number of member states, namely France and Germany, Malta has agreed to be part of the solution in the Ocean Viking stalemate, without prejudice to its legal position, the statement said.

The said vessel has 356 persons on board, all intercepted and rescued in various operations, none of which took place within the Maltese area of competence or under the direction of the Maltese authorities.

Malta will transfer the said persons on Armed Forces of Malta vessels outside territorial waters, and will take them onshore.  All the said migrants will be relocated to other member states: France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal and Romania.  None of the said migrants will remain in Malta.

In the coming days, more persons which had been disembarked in Malta under previous ad hoc arrangements will be transferred to the member states in fulfilment of their pledges.

Ocean Viking -meritaksin 356:sta laittomasta siirtolaisesta 150 menee Ranskaan. Liki kaikki meritaksin matkustajat aikuisia miehiä, ⅔ Sudanista, loput Norsunluuranikolta, Malista ja Senegalista. Toki yli sata ukkoa on ilmoittautunut alaikäisiksi ja näitä 92 ihan ypöyksin tulleiksi. Joukossa tummassa oli jopa neljä naista.

Espanjan laivaston alus Audaz, jonka piti saattaa koko Open Arms -meritaksi Mallorcalle, saapui nyt Lampedusalle, jotta voi ottaa Espanjan osuuden, 15 afroa, Open Armsin taakasta.

A Spanish navy patrol boat sent to Lampedusa to pick up 15 migrants from the charity rescue ship Open Arms arrived Friday off the southern Italian island, the Spanish government said.

The Audaz will pick up 15 migrants who arrived in Lampedusa on the Open Arms, Spain's quota of migrants agreed with France, Germany, Portugal and Luxembourg.

Secret preparations

That's why the preparations for the mission and information about the new ship were a secret matter. Only a few were initiated. The name of the ship did not even know the buyer. "They kept it completely locked up," says Hartmann. Unlike the public, however, the Upper Palatinate knew where the ship was being prepared. Namely, where he lives since September 2018: in Barcelona. Several times he looked past the harbor. The preparations lasted for weeks. Since Friday, the rescuers are back on the road, they are currently in Libya in international waters.

Hartmann bought the ship about six months ago. It cost a six-figure euro amount, he would not call the exact sum. The purchase was handled by Human Blood. The funding was not a problem. "We are making good sales," says 31-year-old Hartmann, who founded the company five years ago. "We benefit from the many PR." Especially by celebrities like actor Jan-Josef Liefers, singer Clueso or DJ Felix Jaehn - who all wear human blood clothes and show that to their many fans on the internet.

Hartmann's brand should send a message: against racism, hatred and exclusion. The rescue is not far away. "I think it's a shame and stupid that the European countries do nothing," says the 31-year-old about the EU's policy on this issue. "Someone has to save the people, they can not be drowned." That's why he decided to buy a ship. The "Eleonore" is 21 meters long and can accommodate 150 people - it is thus slightly smaller than the "Lifeline".

Armed forces rescue 162 migrants in two separate operations

More than 160 migrants were rescued by the Armed Forces in two separate operations on Monday, after being found at sea in rubber dinghies in Malta's Search and Rescue area.

Both groups were spotted during routine monitoring and transferred to AFM patrol boats to be brought to Malta. One group of 73 arrived in Malta around 4.30pm while another group, including 88 men and one woman, arrived shortly before 8pm.

The rescue comes after almost 360 migrants aboard the charity-run rescue vessel Ocean Viking were brought to Malta last Friday as part of an EU-brokered deal that will see them relocated to six different EU countries. [...]

The rescues risk putting further strain on what is becoming an increasingly difficult housing situation for migrants.

Dozens rescued last year are set to be evicted from Malta's reception centres by the end of the month - possibly facing homelessness - as authorities make way for further arrivals.  [...]

Meritaksijärjestöjen ylläpitämillä kahdella lentokoneella ei ole enää asiaa Lampedusan lentokentälle. Näin päätti Italian siviili-ilmailusta vastaava viranomainen ENAC. Muodollinen syy on se, että koneet on rekisteröity vain vapaa-ajan käyttöön eikä pelastustoimintaan.

Merkillepantavaa kumminkin on se, että viranomaisten on turvauduttava erinäisten pykälien syynäämiseen tässäkin, kuten aiemmin on ollut laita monen aluksen suhteen. Laittoman maahantunkeutumisen järjestäminen pitäisi kaiken järjen mukaan olla kriminalisoitu sellaisenaan, ja siihen käytetty kalusto takavarikoitavissa. Mutta näillä mennään.

Sisäministeri Salvini on tänään antanut määräyksen, jolla saksalaisen ihmissalakuljetusjärjestö Mission Lifelinen Eleonore-meritaksia kielletään tulemasta Italian aluevesille. Nämä kieltomääräykset perustuvat Legan ja M5S:n hallituksen ennen toimitusministeristöksi siirtymistään säätämiin maahanmuutto- ja turvallisuuslakeihin.

Eleonore kävi nyt neitsytmeritaksimatkallaan poimimassa 101 laitonta siirtolaista Libyan rannikolta ja sai napattua taakan juuri ennen kuin Libyan rannikkovartiosto ehti paikalle toimittamaan sen takaisin lähimpään turvalliseen satamaan eli palauttaa takaisin Libyaan. Rannikkovartioston alus tuli 50 m:n päähän meritaksista, mutta ihmissalakuljetusjärjestön mukaan meritaksin urhea kapteeni kieltäytyi luovuttamasta "meripelastettuja" libyalaisviraomaisille Libyan meripelastusalueella (tapahtumapaikka sijaitsee kv-merialueella).

German NGO run rescue ship carrying 101 migrants

Interior Minister Matteo Salvini on Tuesday barred the German-flagged migrant rescue ship Eleonore from entering Italian waters with over 100 migrants it picked up off Libya on Monday.
Anti-migrant Euroskeptic League party leader Salvini has closed Italy's ports to NGO-run migrant rescue ships and there have been several standoffs which have ended with the European Union agreeing to take the migrants.
The Eleonore is run by German NGO Lifeline.
Salvini signed a decree prohibiting the entry, transit and stopping of the Eleonore in Italian waters.
The measure has already been sent to the Italian defence and transport ministers.
The ship is carrying 101 migrants it rescued from a sinking dinghy off Libya.

Agrigenton syyttäjäntoimisto on vapauttanut Mare Jonio -meritaksin takavarikosta, joten nämä ihmissalakuljettajat ovat mahdollisimman pian lähdössä takaisin etsimään "siirtolaisia". Tuon "Mediterranea Saving Humans" -puljun toinen alus Alex on ilmeisesti vielä takavarikossa.

Meritaksi Mare Jonio on parhaillaan Libyan pelastusalueella n. 70 kilometriä Khomsista pohjoiseen.

100 matkustajan kumivene lähti Khomsista tänään aamuyöllä ja tilasi kyydin meritaksien tilauskeskus Alarm Phonesta kolme tuntia lähtönsä jälkeen.

Vene pääsi vain 16 kilometrin päähän rannikosta ennen haaksirikkoa. Libyan rannikkovartiosto saapui paikalle ja pelasti 65 matkustajaa ja löysi 5 ruumista.

Kateissa olevien etsinnät jatkuvat yhä.

Pelastetuista 56 oli Sudanista, 5 Marokosta, 3 Egyptistä ja 1 Tunisiasta. Kuolleista 3 oli Marokosta, 1 Somaliasta ja 1 Sudanista.

EU plans special meeting for distribution of refugees

Hundreds of migrants are waiting on rescue ships like the "Eleonore" in the Mediterranean. A special meeting in Malta will clarify the distribution of refugees in the future.

In order to move forward with the distribution of refugees rescued from the Mediterranean, a meeting with willing EU countries in Malta is scheduled for the second half of September . The deadline is September 19th.

Besides Germany, France, Italy and Finland were invited, EU sources said. The latter currently holds the EU Presidency. Most recently, the same states had participated in the reception from distress of rescued migrants. Among them, apart from Germany and France, were mostly Portugal, Ireland and Luxembourg.

Currently, the federal government is dealing with the Eleonore . Because for the approximately 100 migrants on the rescue ship of the German NGO Mission Lifeline in front of Malta, there is still no solution. On Wednesday, the ship was supplied with drinking water and food outside the twelve-mile zone. The supply by a commercial supply ship was organized and paid by Mission Lifeline, said its spokesman Axel Steier. Malta is so far "not ready to open its port", currently there is "no signal for a solution".

A spokesman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior explained that the Federal Government had contacted the European Commission and asked them to take coordinating talks. Tunnettujen meritaksioperaattorien lisäksi Libyasta toimittaa Välimeren yli laittomia siirtolaisia tietysti myös muukin järjestäytynyt rikollisuus, jonka logistiikkaketjussa meritaksit ovat olleet se viimeinen lenkki ennen jonkin EU-maan kamaraa, eli Italian Lampedusan saarelle saapuu aika ajoin myös omatoimimatkailijoita Afrikasta. Maanantaina Libyasta lähtenyt paatti saapui tänään Lampedusalle ja siitä rantautui 78 hengen taakka laittomia syyrialais- ja bangladeshilaissiirtolaisia.

Another 'ghost landing'

Some 78 Syrian and Bangladeshi migrants landed on Lampedusa without any alert being sounded on Thursday.
These so-called 'ghost landings' have been continuing despite Interior Minister and nationalist League party leader Matteo Salvini's policy of closing Italy's ports to NGO run migrant rescue ships.
The migrants said they had left Libya on Monday.
They were taken to the island's hotspot, at Contrada Imbriacola.

Italia suostui kuin suostuikin ottamaan kaksi kolmannesta Lampedusan edustalla kyttäävän Mare Jonion asiakkaista – naisia ja lapsia, joita tällä kertaa mukana on ollut poikkeuksellisen monta.

Kyytiin jäi sentään 34 miestä ja sinkkunaista, mikä taannee sen, että alus pysyy poissa pahanteosta samalla kun emoyhtiöllä polttoaine- ja henkilöstökulut juoksevat. Eikä väheksyä pidä sitä stressiä jonka matujen kanssa viikkotolkulla ahtaasti matkustaminen väistämättä aiheuttaa.

After repeated requests we made starting this early morning, finally the Italian port authorities have decided to transfer the most vulnerable shipwreck survivors from Mare Jonio to a Coast Guard patrol boat to bring them ashore: they are pregnant women, mothers with children, unaccompanied minors.

We are happy for them and grateful to the men and women of the Coast Guard and to the doctors of the health personnel who diligently carried out that transshipment in such adverse marine weather conditions, as we are saying from this morning.
It would have certainly been safer doing it in a safe port or a sheltered point, protected from this extremely rough sea.
Now 34 people remain on board, including single women, men in precarious conditions as a result of abuse and torture, and in a state of post-traumatic stress.

We strongly ask that all these survivors, as well as our crew, to disembark as soon as possible: the situation remains unsafe on board. On top of the high wave motion, which is sickening all of us on board, we had a default of the evaporator and the desalination system, so that we are now out of any running water: taps aren't working, kitchen and bathroom are unusable, and we only have bottled water. These people can't wait their health conditions to worsen to be allowed to disembark.

Let them land, let us disembark. Everyone.

62 Pakistani migrants land on Salento island

Some 62 Pakistani migrants landed on an island off the Salento area of Puglia on Friday, local sources said.
The migrants, including nine minors, landed on the island of Sant'Andrewa near Gallipoli.
With the exception of two minors, who were taken to hospital, the others were found in good conditions of health, albeit exhausted after 14 days at sea from north Africa.
Two suspected migrant smugglers were arrested.

Italy's Interior Minister Matteo Salvini remains true to his line. He signed a statement that the "Alan Kurdi" with 13 migrants rescued from distress may not call an Italian port.

The rescue ship "Alan Kurdi" had picked up 13 migrants in the Mediterranean on early Saturday morning. The Tunisian people were discovered in Maltese waters aboard an overloaded wooden boat that was in poor condition, said Gorden Isler, spokesman for the Regensburg-based Sea-Eye rescue organization. "It would have been irresponsible to leave people in this situation." Among the rescued were also eight minors. The migrants were on their way to Lampedusa. The "Alan Kurdi" will now go with the people in the direction of Lampedusa, because the Italian island is the next safe place.

The "Alan Kurdi" had only started on Monday from the Spanish port of Castellòn to a new mission in the Mediterranean. She was on her way to the Libyan rescue area when she saw the wooden boat in distress.

Three lifeboats are waiting

The right-wing populist Matteo Salvini remains in his possibly last week as Italian Interior Minister on his tough course in migration policy. He signed a statement that the "Alan Kurdi" should not enter the waters of his country. For the crew of "Alan Kurdi" it is not the first time that Salvini tries to block her rescue work.

Thus, three rescue vessels of private aid organizations with migrants on board the Mediterranean are waiting to call at a safe harbor. In addition to the "Alan Kurdi" this also affects the "Eleonore" of the German captain Claus-Peter Reisch with 100 people on board. The ship, which is supported by the non-governmental organization Mission Lifeline, is waiting near Malta.

Italian police seize German rescue ship, say migrants to disembark

Italian police on Monday seized a German migrant rescue ship that had been stranded at sea for a week with more than 100 migrants aboard, and will disembark the migrants soon, a police spokesman said.

The ship's captain had earlier set course for the port of Pozzallo, on the island of Sicily, sparking a new standoff between rescuers and Italy's interior minister just as he looks set to lose his job.

Matteo Salvini, leader of the far-right League, signed a decree last week banning the Eleonore from entering Italian waters as part of his closed-door policy on migrants arriving by boat from north Africa.

"The ship was seized and migrants will be disembarked around midday (1000 GMT)," said a spokesman for Italy's financial police in Rome, which is dealing with the case.

The Eleonore's captain, Claus-Peter Reisch, tweeted on Monday that Italian authorities were on board.

He had earlier said he had decided to enter Italian waters and head for shelter because of storms.

"After eight days of waiting for a safe harbor, after countless attempts to convince states to care for 104 people, tonight the weather has decided," he tweeted.

"I need to declare Eleonore a case of emergency due to the life-threatening situation on board."

The ship is operated by the German charity Mission Lifeline.

Migrants: three landings in a few hours on Lampedusa

Three boats with a total of 143 people on board

Three boats carrying a total of 143 passengers landed on Monday morning on Lampedusa, Sicily. The first boat with 63 Tunisians on board reached Cala Spugne on its own. The migrants were apprehended by security forces and taken to a hotspot in the Imbriacola area.

A second boat with 65 migrants on board was intercepted by finance police a few miles off the coast. The migrants were escorted by tax police to the pier of Favaloro. A third boat with 15 migrants on board reached the island a few hours later.

Italy seizes migrant rescue vessel, another to disembark

Italian authorities on Monday (2 September) seized the rescue vessel Eleonore, disembarking the around 100 migrants aboard after it entered Italian territorial waters despite a ban.

"Now we are in a safe port," Eleonore's captain Claus-Peter Reisch tweeted, before adding "now our ship is confiscated" and inviting contributions for a new one.

The ship, operated by German charity Lifeline, has been at sea for eight days waiting for a safe port to dock after rescuing over 100 migrants in distress while crossing the Mediterranean.

Another rescue vessel, the Mare Jonio, on Monday said it would disembark its 31 rescued migrants.

"We have just been informed that the Italian coastguard will soon disembark 'for health reasons' the last 31 people on board," Mediterranean Saving Lives, which operates the vessel, tweeted.

"Their odyssey is over and a bit of humanity can be seen on the horizon. Welcome to Europe!" the charity tweeted, with the vessel currently off the coast of Italy's southern island Lampedusa.

Charity vessels are currently banned from entering Italian territorial waters in accordance with the hardliner politics of the outgoing League-Five Star Movement coalition government.

Italy customs officers on Monday seized the Eleonore as part of the draconian legislation.

Captain Reisch said he headed for Italy as "the situation on board is life-threatening" because of heavy rain overnight and stormy seas.

The Mare Jonio rescued 98 people in distress off Libya last week, with 67 vulnerable people disembarked to Italy, including women, children and urgent medical cases, spokesman Luca Faenzi said.

A third vessel, the Alan Kurdi operated by German charity Sea Eye, was on Monday sailing between Malta and Italy after also being banned from Italian waters by outgoing far-right interior minister Matteo Salvini.

EU countries extend welcome to Eleonore migrants without Italy

Five EU member states have said they agree to receive the 104 migrants aboard the German charity rescue boat. The EU will schedule a special meeting in autumn to discuss possible migrant distribution mechanisms.

Germany, France, Ireland, Portugal, and Luxembourg agreed on Tuesday to receive migrants and refugees aboard the humanitarian boat Eleonore.

A spokesperson for the European Commission made the announcement in Brussels. The boat belongs to Lifeline, a German NGO.

The decision follows intense discussions between the European Union member states to find a solution for the 104 rescued persons aboard the ship.

The Commission also said it will support Italy in organizing the resettlement process.

The EU plans to organize a special meeting on the voluntary distribution mechanism of the migrants and is estimated to be scheduled near the end of September. The aim of the meeting is to bridge the gap until  the bloc has agreed on a reform of the EU asylum system.

Italy rejects migrants

Migrants aboard the Eleonore disembarked in the Sicilian port of Pozzallo in southern Italy on Monday. By entering Italian waters, the boat defied the country's explicit ban and was consequently confiscated by Italian customs officers.

Charity rescue vessels are currently not permitted in Italian territorial waters in accordance with the hardline right-wing politics of the League-Five Star Movement coalition government.

Rome - Matteo Salvini, head of Italy's right-wing Lega, has continued to struggle with the judiciary because of his intervention as Minister of the Interior against rescue vessels seeking refuge in Italian ports with migrants. The Milan Public Prosecutor's Office has commenced investigations against Salvini acting as Minister of the Interior on Wednesday for defamation of German captain Carola Rackete. Salvini had repeatedly berated Rackete in media and on Facebook and referred to as "criminals" and "pirates".

Rackete: "offensive aggression against my person"

Salvini spread on Twitter and Facebook a "message of hatred" and use for his office, it is said in Rackete's complaint, the news agency dpa present. Salvini's statements are "far from being statements of legitimate criticism." Rather, it was "gratuitous and offensive aggression against my person" acted. For weeks he has also been conducting a hate campaign against Sea-Watch, which called Salvini an "illegal and lawless organization" that would let "illegal migrants" leave aboard an "illegal ship", a "pirate ship", a "lawless ship" and their ship Members are "accomplices of smugglers and traffickers".

The 31-year-old rescuer was arrested and put under house arrest in Lampedusa Island at the end of June after escorting the Sea-Watch 3 rescue vessel with 40 migrants aboard, despite the authorities' ban on the port. It is being investigated in Italy for illegal immigration aid.

"Rackete violates Italian law, attacks Italian police boats and sues me, I do not fear the mafiosi, and I do not fear a rich and spoiled German communist," Salvini had responded to the lawsuit on Twitter. The investigation was taken according to media reports by the Milan Public Prosecutor, because Salvini lives in Milan.

The Alan Kurdi's captain claimed that since the migrants were rescued in Malta's Search and Rescue area, it was Malta's responsibilty to take them on

German sea rescue NGO Sea-Eye has filed a judicial protest calling on the Prime Minister and the Commander of the AFM to coordinate the disembarkation of a group of migrants rescued at sea by the M/V Alan Kurdi last week.

The migrants had been spotted on a sinking wooden boat three  nautical miles away from the Alan Kurdi's position at 35°09N 011°57E on August 31. The rescue ship's captain had dispatched two RHIBs to investigate. The boat's hull was only 10cm above water and none of those on board were wearing life vests. The personnel on the RHIBs decided to transfer the sinking boat's passengers onto their vessels.

As the incident took place in Malta's Search and Rescue area, the captain of the Alan Kurdi contacted the Maltese rescue coordination centre "at the earliest opportunity." The first contact with the Maltese authorities took place around 20 minutes after the rescue crew began circling the sinking boat and it was decided that the rescue operation had to start right away.

The Alan Kurdi was subsequently refused entry into Maltese port, the authorities claiming it had unilaterally ignored its orders. The 13 men rescued were now stuck on the vessel without a safe port of disembarkation.

Sea-Eye, said the position taken by the Maltese authorities was incorrect and that it was following the established conventions which define a rescue as "an operation to retrieve persons in distress, provide for their initial medical or other needs and deliver them to a place of safety".

Sea-Eye said the situation on board the Alan Kurdi was quickly deteriorating as many other those rescue required immediate medical attention. Two of them were already transferred to Malta on Thursday, calling on the Prime Minister and the Commander of the AFM to order the immediate disembarkation of the rest of the migrants, or be held responsible.
