Border Force intercepts 74 migrants in boats off Kent coast

More than 70 migrants have been detained after eight small boats tried to cross the English Channel on Saturday, the Home Office confirmed.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid described the incident as "deeply concerning", after the vessels were intercepted by Border Force officials off the Kent coast.

Only one of the eight vessels made it to shore, landing at Winchelsea Caravan Park beach, East Sussex.

Two other vessels were stopped in France by the authorities there.

All those detained have been assessed and cleared by medical staff and are now being processed by immigration officials, the Home Office said.

The Home Office said the nationalities of the detainees are still being determined, and a criminal investigation has been launched.

Mr Javid added: "Those who choose to make this dangerous journey across one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world are putting their lives in grave danger - and I will continue to do all I can to stop them."

He said the UK Border Force had stepped up its activity out of the Joint Co-ordination and Information Centre in Calais.

Mr Javid added: "We will continue to seek to return anyone who has entered the UK illegally."

France jails imam over Channel migrant crossings

A French court has sentenced an imam to two years in prison for helping migrants try to cross the English Channel in inflatable boats.

The 39-year-old Iranian national was accused of arranging several crossings from northern France to England.

A 29-year-old Senegalese man who attended the mosque where the imam preaches also stood trial.

He was given nine months in jail and was banned from visiting Nord and Pas-de-Calais for three years.

The imam, who has not been named in French media, fainted upon hearing his sentence.

The men admitted providing six or seven dinghies after they were arrested in April, French newspaper Le Figaro reported.

French authorities were alerted at 2.15am (1.15pm British time) today when the group called for help.

They were found just over five miles north of Calais.

The news was reported on the website of the Channel and North Sea. maritime authority (Préfecture Maritime de la Manche et de la Mer du Nord).

The coastal regional monitoring and rescue centre at Cap Griz Nez, between Calais and Boulogne, then despatched rescued vessels to help.

Some of the 19 people, including one were were found to be suffering from hypothermia.

They were brought to Calais at about 7am local time and were dealt with by French border police.

Talks between UK and French ministers follow spike in small boat crossings

France is considering new night-time drone flights on its northern coast to tackle the organised crime networks running illegal people-smuggling operations to the UK in small boats, Britain's Home Secretary said on Sunday.

Sajid Javid spoke with his French counterpart Christophe Castaner on Friday after 74 migrants on eight boats were intercepted by authorities the previous weekend, sparking demands for action from within his own party.

"The suggestion from Minister Castaner to mobilise additional coastal patrols and explore aerial surveillance options is exactly the type of action while will build on the progress we have already made," he said in a statement on Sunday.

The UK said 539 people in 2018 attempted to cross the waterway between France and UK, which measures more than 20 miles across at its shortest distance.

The numbers increased sharply at the end of last year after security at other crossing points were strengthened and people smugglers reportedly urged migrants had to make their moves before Brexit and anticipated tighter controls.

The majority of those making the attempt by sea have declared as Iranian. Police officials believe it was linked to a visa-free travel offer by Serbia to Iranians which ended in October 2018 with some 12,000 people failing to return to Iran.

The numbers using small boats represent only about 1.5 per cent of "clandestine crossings" from France to the UK, according to senior police officials, with the majority seeking to stow away on lorries crossing through the Channel tunnel.

A smuggling ring thought to have made millions sneaking more than 300 migrants into the UK has been smashed by police.

Officers in Romania and France arrested 11 gang members suspected to be part of a major international smuggling operation made up of 59 mainly Romanian truck drivers, middlemen and leaders.

It is believed the gang, who are suspected of transporting 308 migrants to Britain, made £3million charging £9,700 to £12,800 for a passage through the Eurotunnel or ferries across the Channel.

French and Romanian authorities raided 18 houses on Tuesday, seizing weapons and wads of cash worth £444,000.

The operation, supported by crime agency Eurojust, came after French police uncovered a gang smuggling migrants, mostly from the Middle East, using trucks belonging to Romanian companies.

Yesterday a Eurojust spokesman said the simultaneous arrests were part of the biggest people smuggling operation this year.

The 11 arrested were charged with smuggling, participation in a criminal organisation and money laundering.

Migrants - 38 picked up by Border Force in three cases off Kent in Dungeness and Greatstone area

Nearly 40 migrants have been stopped trying to make their way to Kent today.

Authorities dealt with three separate incidents, involving a total 38 people on the British side of the Channel, plus another involving 15 people on the French side.

The Home Office confirmed a Border Force Coastal patrol vessel intercepted 29 men, women and children, from two small boats travelling across the Channel towards the UK coast.

A third small boat was also recovered at Dungeness beach.

The nine people who had arrived on the vessel were dealt with by Kent Police.

All 38 people, who presented themselves as Iraqi and Iranian nationals, were medically assessed and have now been passed to immigration officers for interview.

A criminal investigation is underway in relation to the three UK incidents.

Meanwhile, the French authorities intercepted a fourth small boat with 15 migrants on board. This was returned to France.

Forty migrants intercepted in attempt to cross English Channel

Adult men, women and children were saved during the crossing, with the Home Office describing the attempts as a "huge risk".

Two boats holding 40 migrants, including adult men, women and children, have been intercepted in the English Channel.

The interceptions by Border Force vessels were separate incidents and come as the Home Office warns about the risks of making the dangerous journey on unsuitable vessels.

Back in December, Home Secretary Sajid Javid declared a major incident after a sharp rise in the number of migrants being picked up by UK authorities while attempting the crossing.

Government figures revealed 539 migrants attempted to travel to the UK on small boats in 2018, with around 80% attempting it in the last three months of the year.

According to the Home Office, the migrants attempting the crossing on Saturday presented themselves as being from Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan.

They have been medically assessed and transferred to immigration officers for interview.

"Anyone crossing the Channel in a small boat is taking a huge risk with their life and the lives of their children," said a Home Office spokesperson.

Charlie Elphicke, the Tory MP for Dover, this morning labelled the attempted crossing 'incredibly dangerous' and urged swift action to tackle the crisis.   

It comes just days after 40 migrants from Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan were caught using two boats to get across the channel.

Reacting to the news, Mr Elphicke said: 'This makes 163 illegal entrants so far this month. These crossings are incredibly dangerous and it's vital France and the UK act to tackle this crisis and the bring the people traffickers that lie behind it to justice.

More than 700 have been picked up on British waters since last November. Weather conditions are said to have been 'ideal' for crossing the Channel through the night.

Seventeen people were arrested in Britain, France and Romania as part of a probe into smugglers who were operating from northern France to transport migrants to the UK.

In Calais, it's been almost three years since the "Jungle" was dismantled . However, the problem of migrants wishing to join the United Kingdom remains very much alive. A joint action plan was signed at the beginning of the year , providing for better investments in terms of security and surveillance. This device seems to bear fruit since an extensive network of smugglers has been dismantled , said Monday the police on the borders of the Pas-de-Calais and the judicial police of Lille. A total of 17 people were arrested in Britain, France and Romania.

International cooperation

The case began almost a year ago. In the summer of 2018, the authorities carried out several interceptions of drivers of Romanian origin. They tried to cross the Channel "with migrants hidden in their road together," according to the police. "Under the guise of Romanian transport companies with the involvement of their leaders," the truckers "were passing the candidates to exile from the ports" of the coast of northern France, Belgium and the Netherlands. An investigation "against a background of trafficking in human beings" was therefore opened on 22 August 2018.

And the numbers are impressive: the survey "made it possible to count a minimum of 259 attempts of migrant convoys". 167 were completed, 92 failed. "140 migrants" were intercepted at the border, "for a minimum of 327 migrants in British territory". In addition, the turnover of this criminal organization is estimated at "nearly 3.6 million euros". Individuals intercepted abroad should soon be handed over to the French authorities for prosecution.

Three British nationals arrested in connection with international people smuggling investigation

Three British men have been arrested as part of an international investigation into an organised crime group suspected of smuggling over 300 migrants into the UK.

Two of the men were arrested by the National Crime Agency on European Arrest Warrants and now face extradition to France to stand trial.

36-year-old Hojjat Nickhoo, from Enfield, was held as he tried to leave the country via Heathrow airport on Saturday 15 June, while 31-year-old Ayoob Khaleghi was detained following a raid on Nickhoo's address on 19 June.

They appeared before Westminster Magistrates Court yesterday (24 June) where they were remanded in custody as extradition proceedings continue.

Following the NCA arrests in London, a third British man - a 43-year-old from Islington - was held by the French authorities in Calais.

The trio are accused of being part of a people smuggling network thought to have brought more than 300 migrants to the UK from France in the backs of lorries.

The UK arrests follow an operation led by the French and Romanian authorities, which saw 11 others arrested on 12 June as part of the same investigation.

Channel migrants: Six children among 22 people in boats

Immigration officials are questioning 22 migrants who crossed the Channel in two dinghies in the early hours.

Border Force was called to St Margarets Bay in Dover, Kent, at about 04:00 BST and found six people, including two children, on the beach. An empty dinghy was found nearby.

An hour later, a second boat carrying four children, five women and seven men was intercepted off the coast of Kent.

All were medically assessed and found to be well, the Home Office said.

Dover MP Charlie Elphicke, who photographed the abandoned dinghy, said the "very expensive" outboard motor - which costs in excess of £2,600 - "underlines how lucrative this business is and the people traffickers behind this are making tens of thousands of pounds".

ITV News joins French patrol as they find hidden group of migrants bidding to cross the English Channel

ITV News Correspondent Dan Rivers and Foreign News Editor Jonathan Wald joined the French authorities bidding to catch migrants attempting to make the crossing to the UK.

This is their account as a night patrol led them to a group hidden on the northern coastline:

The night patrol began at 10pm, just off of Oye Plage, about six miles east of Calais.

The summer sun had finally melted into the horizon over the beach, bathing the sky primrose and more dramatic by the rags of scattered grey cloud.

The night was still, the sea perfectly so - ideal conditions for navigating the English Channel.

We were here to see how the French authorities are trying to crack down on the perilous crossings of migrants hoping to reach the UK.

We were led into the dunes by another group of gendarmes, led by Major Marie-Laure Pezant, who are one of 15 to 20 foot patrols scouring the French coast each night.

There are currently between 1,000 to 1,500 migrants and refugees along the north of France according to Fabien Sudry, the prefect (top political official) for the Pas-de-Calais region.

Around 300 are in Calais, 800 to 1,000 are in Dunkirk and around 200 are in Caen.

While their crossings may be illegal, the crime is altogether different from that of more conventional criminals.

They are not murderers, burglars or the human traffickers that sometimes profit from their desperation to find a better life.

They are a combination of refugees and economic migrants fleeing persecution and poverty, prepared to endure great hardship and risk to come to the UK. Most are well-educated.

Lieutenant Colonel Jean-Luc Pereau, one of those on the patrol, said "we must do our job but I do have sympathy for [the migrants] because they are exploited by smugglers who do not care about them".

The men have official documents showing they have already been charged with being in France illegally.

Two of them were given 30 days to leave France and there were still 10 days before their deadline expired, when in theory they would be deported back to Iran.

In practice though France's concern for their human rights trumps the deportation order and they were all released within 24 hours of their arrest.

The six Iranian men may have been about to carry out an illegal crossing but they could not be deported to a hardline country like Iran, where they would be at risk of torture or death.

So they were caught, questioned, processed and released, free to try their journey again within a few days.

On the same night at nearby Wimereux another 20 Iranians were captured by gendarmes patrols.

They may or may not get their money back from the smugglers, who are undoubtedly the winners in this perverse game of cat and mouse on the beaches of Calais.

Children were among dozens of migrants who have been detained by the UK Border Force off the coast of Dover.

A witness said a group of up to 38 migrants were caught attempting to travel across the Channel to Kent shortly before midday on Tuesday.

A lone man was also picked up separately by French authorities near Calais while reportedly swimming with a rubber ring and flippers, according to the BBC.

Speaking about the man who was detained near Calais, former coastguard Andy Roberts said: "I've seen every kind of attempted unorthodox crossing of the Dover Strait.

"This one is absolutely incredible. Anyone who thinks with a rubber ring and some flippers they can swim 21 miles as the crow flies... is really asking for serious trouble."

Border Force officials caught migrants in three boats trying to cross the English Channel today, bringing the total number of arrivals to 744 this year.

Some 36 migrants in small vessels were intercepted and picked up in three incidents off Dover in Kent this morning at 2.45am, 6.30am and 8.10am.

The fresh incidents will prompt further calls for Home Office to get a grip on the migrant crossings crisis, which was declared a major incident last winter.

Charities have claimed migrants have been taking greater risks to get to Britain in recent months due to hardline policing and increased security at French ports.

All the latest groups have made the hazardous crossing when the English Channel was calm, but some 952 migrants have now arrived since November.

The first incident at 2.45am saw the Dover Coastguard alert Border Force officials about a boat in the Channel who intercepted it and brought it to shore.

On board were 14 people, made up of ten men, three women and a boy. They all presented themselves as Iranian.

Oldham man one of four on people trafficking charge

AN Oldham man is among four people charged with being part of a large scale alleged people smuggling network set up to help illegal migrants into the UK from Iraq and Iran.

The local man is Tarik Namik, aged 42, who is charged alongside Hajar Ahmed, 36, from Manchester, Soran Saliy, 39, and Habil Gider, 51, both from Stoke.

They were arrested in a series of National Crime Agency raids in 2018 across Manchester and Soke.

The four have been charged with conspiracy to help asylum seekers enter the UK between May 1, 2017 and April 18, 2018. They have been bailed to appear before Manchester City and Salford Magistrates Court on August 20.

Border Force was alerted to a small boat travelling across the English Channel towards the coast at about 04:30 BST.

Gang of 13 jailed for total of 45 years after trafficking people from the Middle East into the UK

A gang of 13 - which included two men from Kent - have been jailed for a total of 45 years after trafficking people from the Middle East into the UK.

Their convictions follow a two-year investigation, led by detectives from the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU), which uncovered the network specialising in facilitating the illegal movement of people from Iraq and the Kurdistan region into Britain.

Several separate trials have now taken place and, following the conclusion of the final trial at Woolwich Crown Court , the full details of investigation can now be revealed.

The gang members were convicted of offences including conspiracy to assist in unlawful immigration, money laundering and perverting the course of justice.

Among those convicted is Romanian lorry driver Cristinel Samson, 50, of Grimstone Avenue, Folkestone, who was found guilty of two counts of conspiracy to assist in unlawful immigration, and sentenced to five years in prison.

Mohammed Rasul, 30, of Church Road, Ashford, was also found guilty of two counts of conspiracy to assist in unlawful immigration to the UK and sentenced to three years imprisonment.

Throughout the trials, the courts heard how the gang would use contacts across the UK, Europe and Asia to move people to a holding point - often in south-eastern France.

They were then taken by taxi to Belgium, where they would be hidden within lorries heading to the UK by ferry.

The victims would travel either in the lorry cab, on top of the cab in the wind deflector, or underneath the trailer on a pallet shelf.

If they were detained in the UK, they would immediately claim asylum and be released to UK family members, who had paid the organised crime group between £8,000 and £10,000 per person.

Details of those convicted over the course of four trials:

'Head of the organised crime group' Alan Hoger, 33, of Kenilworth Road, St Leonards-On-Sea, East Sussex was found guilty of four counts of conspiracy to assist in unlawful immigration to the UK and one count of conspiracy to convert criminal property. He was sentenced to a total of 10 years imprisonment.

'Second in command' Goran Ahmed, 34, of Farley Bank, Hastings, East Sussex was found guilty of four counts of conspiracy to assist in unlawful immigration to the UK and one count of conspiracy to convert criminal property. He was sentenced to a total of eight years imprisonment.

Lorry driver Cristinel Samson, 50, of Grimstone Avenue, Folkestone, was found guilty of two counts of conspiracy to assist in unlawful immigration to the UK and sentenced to five years imprisonment.

Bakhtyar Mohammed, 46, of Netherfield Road, Bolton was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to convert criminal property and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, suspended for two years.

Kveta Conkova, 31, of Kenilworth Road, St Leonards-On-Sea, East Sussex was found guilty of one count of converting criminal property and sentenced to three years and six months imprisonment. She is the wife of Alan Hoger and assisted with laundering money for the organised crime group.

Alan Salam, 34, of The Rookery, Eastbourne, East Sussex was found guilty of one count of converting criminal property, one count of perverting the course of justice and one count of conspiracy to pervert the court of justice. He was sentenced to four years and three months imprisonment.

Susan Mohammed, 36, of The Rookery, Eastbourne, East Sussex was found guilty of one count of perverting the course of justice and sentenced to four months imprisonment.

Kaiwan Ali, 36, and Ari Ako, 37, both of Dryden Street, Nottingham were found guilty of perverting the course of justice and will be sentenced on August 12.

Almost 40 migrants intercepted around Kent and Sussex

Almost 40 migrants were intercepted off the Kent and Sussex coasts, trying to cross the English Channel.

Twenty people were found around Dungeness by Border Force officials, after arriving in a dinghy, on Saturday.

In a second incident the force's cutter intercepted a small boat in the Channel, and brought 11 men to Dover.

Another six migrants, including three children, were found by police on the Sussex coast.

All 37 migrants presented themselves as Iraqi and Iranian nationals.

At least 966 people, including about 89 children, have crossed the Channel in small boats since 3 November 2018.

Britannian rannikkovartiosto pelasti perjantaina kaksi kumiveneestä pudonnutta matkustajaa Englannin kanaalista, kolmatta ei löydetty ja hänen etsintänsä on lopetettu. Hänen oletetaan hukkuneen.

Rannikkovartiosto tavoitti kumiveneen ja pelasti siinä olleet 19 matkustajaa, yhteensä pelastettuja on siis 21. Kaikki olivat Iranin ja Irakin kansalaisia.

Aiemmin perjantaina Britannian viranomaiset pelastivat 30 matkustajaa neljästä eri veneestä, joista yksi oli kanootti. Kaikki olivat Iranin ja Afganistanin kansalaisia.

Heidät vietiin Britanniaan, vaikka heidät olisi pitänyt viedä takaisin Calaisiin. Tämä toimii vetovoimatekijänä ja lisää veneilyä ja täten myös hukkumisia.

Search ends for Channel migrant missing at sea

The woman was reported to have fallen from a dinghy that was seen by a cargo vessel heading towards the Kent coast at 13:15 BST on Friday.

Three people were reported to have gone overboard, two of whom were quickly found, HM Coastguard said.

The Home Office said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of this woman at this terrible time."

It said that 19 others from Iran and Iraq, including four children, had been rescued in the Channel and passed to immigration officials. [...]

Thirty migrants have been intercepted crossing the Channel in four small boats, including a kayak.

Border Force officials were alerted to the first incident at about 04:00 BST, with the last three hours later.

The vessels were picked up by a Border Force cutter and a coastal patrol vessel, and brought to Dover.

The Home Office said the group was made up of 27 men, one woman and two children. Two of those rescued were found in a kayak.

Channel migrants: Eleven people found in boat

Eleven migrants were intercepted by Border Force as they crossed the Channel in a small boat.

A dinghy was seen travelling towards the UK coast at about 09:00 BST.

The group, who said they were from Iran and Niger, were transported to Dover and passed to immigration officers for interview, the Home Office said.

A further 24 migrants were rescued by the French coastguard and taken to Calais after their dinghy got into difficulty about 4km north of Dunkirk.

More than 950 people, including at least 80 children, have crossed the Channel in small boats this year.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said his message to migrants crossing the Channel is "we will send you back."

He added: "If you come illegally you're an illegal migrant and I'm afraid the law will treat you as such."

About 65 people who arrived in the UK illegally by small boat have been returned to European countries, the Home Office said.

Number of migrants crossing the Channel reportedly surpassed 1,000 so far this year

The number of migrants crossing the channel this year reportedly passed the 1,000 marker tonight, despite Sajid Javid declaring it a major incident last year.

The Home Office recorded 37 migrants attempting to cross to the UK today, although there were reports that the number could be closer to 65 as two other incidents were being investigated.

Among the men, women and children arriving in the UK on six separate boats, one was carrying a child aged three.

MPs tonight warned of a "summer of chaos", with 267 migrants arriving so far in August alone.

Figures compiled by The Daily Telegraph reveal 1,027 migrants have made the crossing in 2019, taking into account yesterday's 65.

Last year the Home Office said 539 migrants had attempted to travel to the UK in small boats, showing the this year's figure is almost double with still four months to go.

Charlie Elphicke, the MP for Dover and Deal said: "Day by day there are more arrivals from France by small boats across the Channel.

"It's clear it's rapidly heading to a summer of chaos. Urgent action is needed by the French authorities to stop boats setting off from France before there is another tragedy."

Iraqi migrant drowns trying to swim from Belgium to England with empty plastic bottles strapped to his body to help him float

An Iraqi migrant in his 40s who was found drowned off the coast of Belgium, died while trying to swim to England according to Belgian authorities.

West Flanders' governor Carl Decaluwé said the man was found wearing an improvised buoyancy aid made of plastic water bottles and wearing one flipper.

He said the man, who police identified using fingerprints, is believed to have been refused asylum in Germany.

'We think he was going to try to swim to the UK,' he said. 'I think he was starting in France.'

The man's body was recovered on Friday at a windfarm near Zeebrugge, 'covered in fish nets with plastic bottles' said Decaluwé, who speculated they may have been improved buoyancy aid to make swimming easier.

'He had big swim flippers to have more speed, but he only had one, maybe the other was in the water, I don't know.'

'It makes me very sad. If you see in the 21st Century that people try to swim from France to the UK, that's crazy.'

Around 70 migrants are believed to have attempted to cross the Channel in several vessels on Tuesday, Sky News understands.

Border Force boats Speedwell and Hunter intercepted up to 20 migrants on a boat in the Channel and they have been brought back to the UK.

Meanwhile, Sky News understands a further 23 have been rescued at sea, while 11 more managed to land at Greatstone beach, near Dungeness in Kent.

This follows an earlier incident confirmed by the Home Office in which 22 migrants were intercepted and later transferred to immigration officials in Dover.

The 22 migrants who have been processed were believed to be from Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Philippines.

Women and children among 86 migrants picked up off UK coast

Women and children are reported to be among 86 migrants picked up off the UK coast on Tuesday - believed to be the biggest number of people intercepted arriving on British shores this year.

Border Force was alerted to several small boats travelling across the Channel towards the shoreline in the early morning, the Home Office confirmed.

A Border Force cutter was deployed this morning and intercepted two vessels - one with 11 people on board, and another with 12 made up of men, women and some reporting to be children.

A further four boats were intercepted, according to the Home Office. At Littlestone in Kent,13 people who had crossed the Channel in a small boat and landed on shore have been detained, while further nine people who landed at Pett Level Beach, near Winchelsea were apprehended.

Around midday, Border Force was alerted to a RHIB (rigid-hulled inflatable boat) near Dungeness, Kent, and Border Force vessel Hunter was sent to intercept and bring to boat back to Dover. At around the same time, Border Force was alerted to a RHIB in the English Channel, and Border Force vessel Seeker was sent to intercept and bring the boat back to Dover.

There were 23 people on board the boat.

The individuals were taken to Dover, where they were medically assessed and found to be well, before being transferred to immigration officials for interview.

Those picked up identified as nationals of Iran, Ethiopia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, the Philippines, Vietnamese.

Eighty-six people attempted to cross the English Channel in a single day - amid claims that people smugglers were using threats about Brexit to pressure migrants.

UK Border Force intercepted what is thought to be the highest number of people in a single day on Tuesday, with 86 men, women and children arriving in Britain after boarding small boats in France.

It coincides with an imminent eviction of two major camps in Calais by the French authorities, which will see hundreds of people – including unaccompanied minors, pregnant women and young children – removed from their settlements.

It is thought the French authorities will take people to temporary accommodation in different parts of the country, but charities say many asylum seekers are making "urgent" attempts to cross the Channel before the evictions take place.

Families including young children are facing an uncertain future due to the planned demolition of a migrant camp in Dunkirk.

Those living at the Espace Jeunes du Moulin gym are expecting eviction in the coming weeks.

The residents, many of whom have travelled from Iraq to the site, attempt to make a daily journey to the United Kingdom.

One of those facing the prospect of a perilous journey to England is six-year-old Mohamed Youssif.

The child from Iraq has a blood disorder and chronic kidney failure, with his family claiming he needs a transplant.

Mohamed needs to take a plethora of medication and has received treatment in Germany, as well as France, but his family feel the need to get him to the UK.

Too sick to play with the other children, Mohamed spends his days in a tent on the site.

Authorities have estimated there are close to 1,200 people in the gym but charity workers think the number is closer to 800, most of whom will try to cross the England.

The lure of the UK is seductive and the danger of the sea is no deterrent for desperate people hoping to start a new life.

The camps are still there despite the efforts of the French to close them down.

None are as big as the makeshift encampment which was known as the "Jungle", but they are dotted around now and constantly move and change.

Many of the people have been in Calais for months, or in some cases years.

Their aims though are the same; to reach Britain and build a better life away from their broken country of origin.

But the journey across the Channel has become much more difficult.

Since 2016 more security and fencing around the port has made illegally boarding lorries much more difficult.

It is one of the reasons people are now taking to the sea and crossing the Channel on flimsy boats and rafts.

The lure of Britain is seductive and the danger of the sea crossing is no deterrent.

On a good day, when the conditions are right, the white cliffs of Dover are visible, calling like a siren.

The Channel though is perilous even for a seaworthy vessel.

The migrants we spoke to said they felt they had no choice but to make the journey because there was no other way of applying for asylum in the UK.

The trend of using the sea is alarming local politicians.
