950 migrants planning to cross to Greece held in Turkey

Security forces held 950 irregular migrants in a northwestern Turkish province as they attempted to cross to neighboring Greece, security sources said on April 7.

The migrants made a beeline to Edirne province as of April 4 night after they were told on social media that Turkey would allow them to cross the border, said the sources who asked not to be named, due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

Upon a tip-off, police and gendarmerie forces increased security measures near the border to prevent the influx of migrants.

Iranian migrant Ali Huseyni said: "Thousands of people organized to cross the border after they were told on social media that Turkey's border gate would be open for crossings."

"People on social media groups wrote to us: 'You go to Edirne and then we will cross to Greece from there'," Huseyni said.

He urged other migrants not to come to Edirne, saying: "Borders are not open."

All migrants were referred to the provincial Migration Office in the city, the sources noted.

Dozens of irregular migrants planning to cross into Greece continued to flock into northwestern Turkey following false rumors that Ankara had opened the border.

As of last April 4, migrants have been making their way via train and bus to the province of Edirne - which borders Greece - upon social media reports alleging that Turkey would allow them through.

Turkish security forces have detained more than 2,000 irregular migrants planning to cross to neighboring Greece in the city in the past 5 days, security sources said.

Police and gendarmerie forces tightened security measures near the border to prevent the influx of migrants.

The Turkish Coast Guard rescued some 43 irregular migrants attempting to illegally cross to Europe after their boat went adrift in the Aegean, security sources said on Wednesday.

Coast guard squads rescued the Afghan, Iranian, Pakistani migrants off the coast of the northwestern Edirne province after learning an inflatable boat with children aboard was in trouble.

All the migrants were referred to the provincial migration office after health checks, said the sources, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

Separately, a group of 51 irregular migrants trying to illegally cross to Greece were held in western Turkey when their boat ran aground, also according to anonymous sources.

The boat in the Canakkale province had been trying to cross the Aegean to Lesbos island, said the sources.

Acting on a tip, gendarmerie teams on the coast of the Ezine district noticed a boat flying a Russian flag had run aground, said the sources.

The gendarmerie held the migrants, of Afghan, Iraqi and Syrian origin, and arrested two Ukrainians and three Russians on suspicion of human trafficking.

Turkey has been the main route for irregular migrants trying to cross into Europe, especially since 2011, the start of the Syrian civil war.

Almost 500 undocumented migrants were transferred over the weekend from the island of Samos, in the eastern Aegean, to the mainland aboard two Greek Navy vessels.

The transfer was part of a broader initiative aimed at transferring some of the migrant burden from island camps to facilities on the mainland.

Samos has become an increasingly popular destination in recent months, resulting in severe overcrowding at the main reception center near the island's port of Vathy.

Last week the Greek Migration Ministry approved the creation of a new reception center, some six kilometers from Vathy.

On Monday, the Greek Coast Guard rescued forty-two migrants aboard a dinghy in the sea region of northeast of Prassos, Samos island.

The migrants were transferred to the Greek port  of Karlovasi.

Kreikka asetti syytteeseen kaksi tanskalaista ja kolme espanjalaista jotka avustivat laittomia siirtolaisia Turkista meren yli Kreikkaan suuren matuvyöryn aikaan. Lesboksen saarella käyty oikeusprosessi vapautti syytetyt toukokuussa 2018. Nyt yksi syytetyistä, pesunkestävä juutti nimeltä Salam Kamal-Aldeen, on vienyt asian – siis sen että yipäätään joutui syytteeseen – EIT:een tukenaan putiikki jolla on mahtipontinen nimi Global Legal Action Network.

Tilanne on ollut lievästi sanoen kummallinen, kun meritaksit kyöräävät kymmeniä tuhansia ihmisiä Afrikasta Eurooppaan vedoten kansainväliseen oikeuteen, jota säädettäessä ei kenellekään ole juolahtanut mieleen, että sitä voisi käyttää laittoman siirtolaisuuden väylänä. Kreikan saarille saapuvien veneilijöiden määrä on kasvussa sään paranemisen myötä. Viime viikolla Kreikan saarille rantautui 662 "hädänalaista" ja viime kuukauden aikana 1866.

Samaan aikaan saarilta siirrettiin mantereelle 2648 "hädänalaista". He voivat yrittää pyrkiä muihin EU-maihin, kuten vaikka Suomeen.

Migrant arrivals on islands peak as weather improves

The influx of undocumented migrants to the Aegean islands from neighboring Turkey intensified last week as the weather improved, even as reception centers remain overcrowded.

A total of 662 people arrived on the islands of the eastern Aegean last week, compared with 444 the week before that. Overall 1,866 landed on the islands of Lesvos, Samos, Chios, Kos and Leros last month.

During the same period 2,648 people were transferred to facilities on the mainland after being deemed as belonging to vulnerable groups. The transfers slightly eased the burden on cramped island centers.

However, plans to create new facilities on the mainland to deal with the increasing population there have been put off until after local elections later this month amid protests by local communities.

Turkin sisäministeriö on julkaissut tuoreita tilastoja tunkeutujista. Turkki on vuoden 2019 aikana huhtikuun 25. päivään mennessä ottanut kiinni jo 79 002 eurooppaantunkeutujaa. Näistä 42% on ollut afganistanilaisia. Samana ajanjaksona Turkista EU-alueelle on päässyt 6 864 tunkeutujaa.

Lukumäärissä on ollut hienoista laskua verrattuna vuoteen 2018. Syyrialaisten osuus on vähentynyt merkittävästi ja muunmaalaisten osuus vain hieman.

Turkey stemming flow of irregular migrants to Europe

Turkey's security measures against irregular migration have yielded positive results, the Interior Ministry said Wednesday.

Migrants intending to cross to Europe have found it increasingly difficult to use Turkey as a transit route.

According to data from the Directorate General of Migration Management, the number of irregular migrants crossing to Europe via Turkish waters and land fell by 17.6% to 6,864 in the first four months of 2019 compared with 8,332 in the same period of the previous year.

The data suggested that a total of 79,002 irregular migrants comprising 32,942 Afghans, 11,691 Pakistanis, 6,432 Syrians, and other origins were held between Jan. 1 and April 25.

The number of Afghan-origin migrants transiting from Turkey to Europe fell by 14% and Syrian-origin migrants by 55%.

On another note, the total number of irregular migrants in Turkey decreased by 2.44% compared with the same period of the previous year.

Meanwhile, the number of deported migrants from Afghanistan increased by 70% and Pakistan by 79%, and others rose by 34% compared with the same period of the previous year.

Hungary's foreign minister praised Turkey on Friday for its role in guaranteeing Europe's security.

Turkey is caring for 4.5 million migrants and the country is not allowing them to travel to the EU, Szijjarto said.

He underlined that Europe would be facing "serious migration pressure" were it not for Turkey's adherence to the deal it reached with the EU in 2016.

"Europe's security today begins in Turkey," Szijjarto added.

He stressed the importance of cooperation against terrorism with Turkey, which he said has taken serious steps against the threat, as over 5,000 former Daesh members who are EU citizens attempt to make their way back to Europe.

Nine dead as migrant boat sinks off western Turkey: coast guard

Nine people, including five children, were killed on Friday after a boat carrying migrants sank off the northwestern coast of Turkey, the Turkish coast guard said, adding that three others were being sought.

The boat, off the coast of the Ayvalik district in the Balikesir province, was carrying a total of 17 migrants, the coast guard said. Five were rescued.

In a statement, the coast guard said search and rescue operations including four boats and two helicopters were being carried out to find the others including a suspected migrant smuggler.

Europol unit to be installed in Evros to tackle migrant smugglers

Europol officers with expertise in curbing organized crime will be dispatched to Evros, in northern Greece, to help the Greek Police (ELAS) crack down on increasingly active international migrant smuggling rackets.

The decision to dispatch a mobile unit to the region in due course was reached following a visit to Alexandroupoli and Orestiada on April 30 by Europol chief Catherine de Bolle, and Robert Crepinko, the agency's migrant smuggling expert.

The unit will be made up of specially trained Europol officers with equipment giving them direct access to the agency's databases. It is hoped that this information, and their expertise, will help local law enforcement catch traffickers who have stepped up their activity over the Greek-Turkish land border in recent months.

"With the mobile unit, inspections can be done in real time, using Europol's databases," a police source told Kathimerini.

Migrants are increasingly arriving in Greece by river or sea after Athens put up a 10-kilometre fence on the Turkish border to stop the flow of migrants in 2012.

Euronews correspondents Fay Doulgkeri and Bryan Carter travelled 800 kilometres across Greece to the Evros river, which forms a natural border between Greece and Turkey near the city of Alexandropouli, Greece.

Migrants either cross the Evros river or take a boat across the Mediterranean to arrive in the port at Alexandropouli. Before Greece erected the fence, it was easier to cross by land.

"Fences or other measures will not stop the refugee flows, but may lead to dangerous crossing points that have serious consequences to the lives or the health of persons," UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Protection officer, Margaritis Petritzikis told Euronews.

'Masked men beat us with batons': Greece accused of violent asylum seeker pushbacks

Scores of Turkish asylum seekers have been pushed back — sometimes violently — from Greece in the last three weeks, lawyers and family members told Euronews.

Witnesses claim various groups of masked men in military uniform, as well as those in plain clothes collaborating with the police, used physical force against those who resisted.

There have been 82 people from Turkey, including children, that have sought political asylum in neighbouring Greece and been sent back since April 23.

Around half have been detained or arrested by Turkish authorities upon their return to their home country on terrorism charges.

They have been linked to the Gulen Movement, which Ankara blames for the failed 2016 coup, or the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), who have been involved in an armed struggle with the Turkish state over independence.

Cyprus authorities say a police vessel on Sunday rescued 14 people believed to be migrants in waters approximately 53 kilometers (33 miles) off the island nation's southeastern tip.

Coast guard rescues 63 migrants off Chios and Samos

Sixty-three migrants were rescued in two separate operations in the eastern Aegean on Tuesday, the Greek coast guard said in an announcement.

The first operation concerned a motorized rubber dinghy that was sailing off the northeast coast of Samos in the early hours of Tuesday, carrying 34 people on board.

The second took place on Chios and involved 29 people who were trying to scramble onto the island's shore. A 27-year-old man suspected of having smuggled the group to the island from Turkey was arrested.

No details were released concerning the identities of the migrants or whether there were women, children or other vulnerable individuals among them.

Seven convicted in connection with human trafficking ring

A National Intelligence Agency (EYP) official and an officer of the Greek Police's immigration unit are among seven people who have been convicted in connection with a human trafficking racket believed to have operated between 2010 and 2015.

The EYP official, code-named Nikitas, was given a nine-year suspended sentence after being found guilty of running a criminal gang and trafficking in migrants, and the police officer got a six-year suspended term for taking bribes to free migrants awaiting deportation.

The remaining defendants included a Greek marine engineer who was given an eight-year prison sentence.

All were released after appealing their sentences.

More than 70 migrant hostages rescued in northern Greece

Greek police have rescued 74 migrants who were being held hostage in a warehouse on the outskirts of Thessaloniki in northern Greece, allegedly by four men who were demanding money from their families for their release.

The migrants, whose nationalities were not made public, had crossed the border from Turkey and were taken to the warehouse by the three traffickers.

The four suspects, all foreign nationals, were arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and blackmail, among other charges.

Police said three more suspects believed to be their accomplices were charged in connection with the case. They are expected to appear before a prosecutor.

Authorities also confiscated a van allegedly used to transfer the migrants from the border.

Nähtävästi ihmiskunta jakautuu myös sen suhteen, että eräät parantavat ympäristönsä laatua kun toiset puolestaan huonontavat sitä.

På lördagen utbröt upplopp i migrantlägret på den grekiska ön Samos. Polisen tvingades använda våld och tårgas för att kontrollera migranterna som är missnöjda med levnadsförhållandena.

Enligt grekisk polis ska omkring 100 migranter ha försökt bege sig in i en närliggande stad och protestera mot levnadsförhållandena i lägret, rapporterar Euronews.

Polisen blockerade deras väg vilket migranterna inte kunde acceptera och sammanstötningar uppkom i lägret. Polisen tvingades skjuta varningsskott samt använda tårgas och våld för att få kontroll på situationen.

Vid sidan av migranter grep polisen även volontärarbetare i sammanstötningarna. En av arbetarna berättade för Euronews att man protesterar eftersom att lägret är fyllt med skräp och man anser att omänskliga förhållanden råder.

Klagar över maten

I ett inslag från PBS NewsHour den 21 maj berättar palestinska migranter att lägret på Samos inte uppfyller deras krav. En av dem berättar att han saknar läkarhjälp, god mat, badrum och att man dessutom inte sover bra.

Ytterligare en migrant har klagomål över maten. I videoklippet syns mannen kasta iväg mat som han blivit tilldelad.

Moni näyttää pakenevan tosiaankin perheen elättämistä. Suku on naittanut basaarikaupantekoon kyllästyneen/parturismiehen jonkun suvun mielestä perheeseen sopivan naisen kanssa, sukupuolivietti on aika ajoin voittanut mahdollisen vastenmielisyyden puolisoa kohtaan ja tuloksena liuta pentuja. Kaverit ja netti hehkuttaa samaan aikaan lännen vapauksista (vaaleaa naista saa aina kun haluaa, kun ne on lisäksi aina tyrkyttämässä itteään) ja rikkauksista, joiden eteen ei tarvi tehdä edes mitään. One of Europe's most notorious people smugglers arrested, along with 19 others, in joint operation across Turkey.

Turkish police have arrested 20 members of an international migrant-smuggling organisation, including one of Europe's most wanted traffickers, Turkish police say.

Akbar Omar Tawfeeq, the suspected leader of the crime syndicate, and others were captured on May 25 during a joint operation conducted by police and intelligence agencies, offcials said in a news briefing in Istanbul on Wednesday.

At least 569 migrants were caught and judicial authorities confiscated six vehicles, six boats and numerous life vests belonging to Tawfeeq's organisation, police officials said.

The crackdown came after an investigation led by Istanbul's chief public prosecutor, who suggested that the organisation smuggled migrants from Afghanistan and northern Iraq, to Greece, Italy and other European countries in return for large sums of money.

The organisation is thought to have received an average of 3,000 to 5,000 euros ($3,340-$5,570) per migrant, with an average of 2 million euros ($2,2m) per year.

His recently aquired Dominican Republic passport indicated he had plans to expand his business to the Americas, MIT officials said.

As the related authorities detected that the leaders of the organisation were planning to move abroad, the first-wave operation was carried out jointly by the Turkish special forces on Saturday, in Istanbul and four other provinces.

Coast Guard Command also caught a boat attempting to flee, officials said.

After home searches, vehicles and ships registered to the suspects' names were seized, in addition to digital and other incriminating material, MIT said.

Dozens of mobile phones, sim cards in different brands, organisational documents, drugs, and sizeable amounts of euros and US dollars were also seized.

Kreikassa on alkanut yleistyä ilmiö, jossa maahantunkeutujista muodostuvat jengit kidnappaavat toisia maahantunkeutujia lunnaiden toivossa. Muutama kommentti takaperin oli edellinen vastaava uutinen, mutta siinä ei paljastettu, minkä maalaisia uhrit ja tekijät olivat. Tässä uutisessa kerrotaan sekä uhrien että tekijöiden olevan pakistanilaisia. Jää epäselväksi, onko tässä kyse samasta vai eri tapauksesta. Jopa 13-vuotiaita lapsia on kidutettu siinä toivossa, että heidän perheensä maksaisi lunnaat.

Pari kuukautta sitten uutisoitiin vastaavasta toiminnasta myös Espanjassa: siellä marokkolaiset kidnappasivat maanmiehiään.

Brittiläinen media on hauskasti otsikoinut tämän, kun siinä viitataan "kreikkalaisiin kidnappaajajengeihin", vaikka itse tekstissä kerrotaan kyseessä olevan pakistanilaiset...

The 24-year-old from Peshawar in Pakistan had endured two days at the hands of a kidnapping gang who had locked him in an abandoned warehouse and beaten him so badly he could barely walk — the latest victim of a brutal form of extortion plaguing illegal migrants to Greece.

"They forced me to call my family while they beat me," said Ahmed, who was too scared to give his full name. "I had to ask them to send money or they would keep hurting me."
