Frontex Saves Sixty Migrants in the Sea off Samos, Greece

Sixty migrants who were trying to make their way to Greece as passengers aboard a dinghy were saved near the village of Agios Constantinos on the island of Samos on Wednesday morning.

According to local authorities, a Frontex vessel was guarding Greece's shores when its officers on board spotted a dinghy coming from Turkey which appeared to be attempting to reach the island of Samos.

The vessel belonging to the EU's external border and Coast Guard agency reached the dinghy and saved the migrants, as their vessel appeared to be ready to capsize and their lives were threatened.

The migrants were then transported to the port of Vathy on the island of Samos and are expected to be transferred again to refugee and migrant camps.

Petrides issued the plea during his intervention to the EU Home Affairs Council on Friday in Luxembourg. He called for the support of partners and institutions, "with the aim of burden-sharing, in accordance with the principle of solidarity, as a fundamental pillar of the European family."

The minister briefed his counterparts on the "new mass influx of asylum applicants from Turkey" through the north and by sea, stressing "the total lack of cooperation on the part of the Turkish authorities towards the principles of the Republic of Cyprus, despite the efforts made by our side".

Jos Kyprokselta alettaisiin siirtää turvapaikanhakijoita tai turvapaikan saaneita vaikkapa Saksaan, Suomeen ja Ruotsiin niin Kyprokselle tulijoiden määrä 10-20 kertaistuisi nopeasti.

EU:n taholta Kyprosta auttaisi jos EU vaatisi Turkilta että Kyprokselle tulleet kuljetetaan Turkin pakolaisleireille ja elävät siellä turvassa ja EU antaa hiukan lisärahaa leirien pyörittämiseen.

Kun turvapaikanhakija loikkaa Kyproksen puolelle ja huutaa Asylum niin Kypros toteaa pyynnön lähtökohtaisesti perusteettomaksi koska tulijalla on viisumi turvalliseen Turkkiin ja tulija on tullut turvallisen Turkin kautta ja palauttaa tulijan Turkin puoleiselle alueelle.

Migrant smuggler arrested after car chase

A 31-year-old migrant smuggler was arrested on Saturday after a car chase near the village of Limni outside Thessaloniki in northern Greece.

A high-speed chase began on the Egnatia highway after he ignored a request by police to pull over. However, his car, with 10 migrants inside, veered off the road into a field. He ran off but police soon caught up with him.

The migrants had entered Greece through the Turkish border and paid the smuggler to drive them to Thessaloniki.

Seven drown in migrant boat sinking off coast of Lesvos (11.6.2019)

Seven asylum seekers have reportedly drowned while trying to reach the Greek island of Lesvos from Turkey's shores after their boat sank while carrying more than 60 people.

According to reports, Greece's coast guard was alerted at around 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning to a boat in distress off the island's coast and arrived in time to save 57 passengers.

Seven people had already drowned before help could reach them, however, with reports saying that two of the victims were children.

Five rescue vessels and one helicopter are still searching the area for more possible victims, as the survivors were being questioned at Mytilini port to ascertain exactly how many passengers were on board the boat when it set sail from nearby Turkey.

Toll from migrant boat sinking off coast of Kos at 12

The death toll from the sinking of a boat carrying more than 40 migrants from Turkey to Greece reached 12 on Monday, the Turkish coast guard was reported as saying.

According to Agence-France Press, 12 people have been reported drowned and 31 passengers were rescued after the vessel went down off the Turkish coast of Bodrum, a few kilometers from the Greek island of Kos.

It was not clear how many passengers were on the vessel when it set sail, though the AFP reported that the search was continuing for survivors or possibly more casualties.

There was also no indication of the victims' identities.

Four human smuggling suspects were arrested yesterday, bringing the total number of people in custody in connection with the migrant boat tragedy in southwestern Turkey to five.

Twelve migrants from Palestine, Syria, Yemen and Somalia died and 31 others were rescued by the Turkish Coast Guard when a boat carrying illegal migrants to a Greek island sank off the coast of Bodrum on Monday. One suspect was arrested on Monday for organizing the journey while four others including one Turkish national and three foreigners were arrested in Bodrum for smuggling migrants.

The suspects may face lengthy prison terms over the deaths apart from smuggling charges. The survivors were rescued after a 7-meter-long fiberglass boat with no life vests sank at sea. They told police that they paid 5,000 euros ($5,600) each to the smugglers for the journey.

Kreikan rannikkovartiosto pelasti yhteensä 73 veneilijää kahdessa eri operaatiossa. Pelastettujen kansalaisuuksista ei ole tietoa.

Ensiksi se pelasti 49 matkustajaa yhdestä veneestä Alexandroupolin läheltä, jonne heidät myös vietiin. Kaupunki sijaitsee Kreikan ja Turkin maarajalla.

Sen jälkeen se pelasti 24 matkustajaa yhdestä veneestä Farmakonisin saaren läheltä. Heidät vietiin Lerokselle. Saari sijaitsee n. 12 kilometria Turkin Didimistä.

Dozens of migrants rescued off Alexandroupolis, Farmakonisi

Greece's Coast Guard said it rescued 49 migrants from a dinghy sailing off the northern city of Alexandroupolis early Thursday morning.

The rescuees were transferred safely to the port of Alexandroupolis where the local port authority will investigate the incident.

The coast guard did not provide details on their nationalities.

Another 24 migrants were located and rescued from a boat southeast of the Aegean islet of Farmakonisi on Thursday morning. The unidentified migrants disembarked on the island of Leros.

Kreikan Lesbokselle saapui tänään kolme venettä. Satamaviranomaiset noukkivat matkustajat talteen. Ensimmäisessä oli 41 matkustajaa ja veneessä ollut "16-vuotias" pidätettiin ihmissalakuljetuksesta epäiltynä.

Toisessa oli 32 matkustajaa ja siinä ollut 36-vuotias pidätettiin. Kolmannessa oli 26 matkustajaa ja siinä ollut 28-vuotias pidätettiin.  Kaikki matkustajat vietiin Mytiliniin.

Three arrested for migrant smuggling in as many incidents

A 16-year-old teenager was arrested on Monday on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos on charges of people smuggling after a spate of incidents on Monday.

Port authorities said the suspect, a foreign national, was the skipper of a dinghy with an outboard motor carrying 41 migrants from Turkey to Greece. The boat was intercepted in the sea area of Agrielias off the island's coast.

Port authorities intercepted another dinghy with 32 migrants in the sea area off Myrsini and arrested the 36-year-old skipper, a foreign national, while a similar vessel was found with 26 migrants off the coast close to the island's airport. The 28-year-old skipper, also a foreign national, was arrested.

In all three cases the migrants were transferred to the port of Mytilene.

Cyprus Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides told state radio that a large influx of migrants were arriving by plane in the north from Turkey then finding their way into the government-controlled south.

Turkish Cypriot authorities are facilitating people trafficking rings, in collaboration with Turkey, Petrides said, noting that this was illegal should not be tolerated on a "European level."

"In the last few months there has been a massive flow of illegal migrants from the occupied areas to the free areas... It is a new phenomenon that we need to take action on," said Petrides.

In May alone, 747 migrants mainly from Africa, Asia and Syria (25-30%) crossed southward in the divided island and only 5% were by boat, Petrides said.

"They arrive en masse, demonstrating how organised these networks operate through Turkey and the occupied areas either by tolerance or guidance of the pseudo-state and Turkey," said Petrides.

Turkey hosts large communities of Afghans, Pakistanis and Iraqis, and also others from African nations who have ended up in the country with hopes of arriving in a European country.

Some 286,000 irregular immigrants - those without proper documentation - landed in Turkey in 2018.

Cyprus will review its policy of accepting third-country asylum claimants from the island's north, Petrides said.

Police in northern Greece have foiled an illegal immigration racket that used a fake ambulance – driven by an ersatz doctor – to smuggle migrants from the Turkish border to the port city of Thessaloniki. [...]

Pursuing police stopped the vehicle 25 kilometers further on. A second man in the cabin, also in a doctor's smock, was found to be a Bangladeshi immigrant, and another 12 Bangladeshi men were hidden in the back of the vehicle.

The Greek driver was charged with migrant smuggling and traffic violations. The arrests were made Thursday.

Tilanne Lesboksen Morian vastaanottoleirillä pahenee ylikuormituksesta johtuen, mikä taas johtuu siitä, että saarelle rantautuneiden määrä on kasvussa (kesäkuussa  Lesbokselle saapui 1523 "hädänalaista", kun taas viime vuonna määrä oli 1048).

Violence at Moria as migrant arrivals on Lesvos spike

Police on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos said on Saturday that 13 asylum seekers, aged between 14 and 32, had been arrested at the Moria refugee camp on charges of causing grievous bodily harm.

According to reports, the suspects, who were mostly Afghans, were involved in a series of violent physical altercations over religious differences on Friday, in which sharpened wooden and metal objects were used as weapons.

Seven people were reportedly injured. Moria has the capacity to host 3,500 people but is currently sheltering more than 5,500.

Authorities said that there has been a significant spike in arrivals over the last month and that the number of asylum seekers at the camp in May had stood at 4,500 people.

A total of number 1,048 asylum seekers arrived on Lesvos in June in 2018, significantly less that the 1,523 that landed on the island from June 1-29 this year.

The arrests were made Friday in Athens.

As well as Greek and Swedish passports, police said Saturday they found Greek and Bulgarian IDs, a laptop, a tablet, a laminating machine, USBs and plastic sheets. If sold, the forged documents would have fetched nearly a million euros ($1.13 million).

The Syrian man, 41, has already served time in prison for similar activity. When police entered the apartment, the 44-year-old woman tried to throw several passports, IDs and a laptop over the balcony.

Portugalin meripoliisi Polícia Marítima operoi  meritaksina Egeanmerellä osana Frontexin ihmissalakuljetusoperaatio Poseidonia. Tänään kuljettivat 47 laitonta siirtolaista Kreikan Lesbokselle. Eikä tämä ollut suinkaan ensimmäinen kerta. Ohessa juttu toisesta taksioperaatiosta kesäkuun lopussa, jossa 52 laitonta myös Lesbokselle.

Alun perin tarkoitus oli valvoa EU:n ulkorajoja Kreikan apuna ja taistella rikollisuutta vastaan, mutta nyt taistellaan rajoja vastaan ja tehdään rikoksia.

Maritime police rescues 21 children in a group of 47 migrants in Greece (with video) (9.7.2019)

The Maritime Police team on a mission on the Greek island of Lesbos today rescued a group of 47 migrants, who were aboard a boat bound for the Greek island of Lesbos.

The group, made up of 21 children, 11 women and 15 men, was detected by the Coast Guard Surveillance Vehicle (VVC) of the Maritime Police at 05:40. After the detection, the coordinates were passed to the Maritime Police team that was aboard the vessel "TUBARÃO", which made the interception of the boat at 05:57.

After the interception, the migrants were transferred to the Maritime Police vessel and transported to the port of Skala Skamineas, where they landed safely and were handed over to the Greek authorities.

The Maritime Police is part of the POSEIDON operation, under the umbrella of the European agency FRONTEX and in support of the Greek Coast Guard, with the aim of controlling and monitoring the Greek and external maritime borders of the European Union, combating cross-border crime, within the European Coast Guard.

Maritime Police makes two rescues and saves 52 migrants in Greece (C / Video) (29.6.2019)

The Maritime Police team held two boats today, saving 53 migrants on the island of Lesbos, Greece.

The first rescue occurred at 0625, when the Coast Guard detected a boat in front of Lambda, which was intercepted by the vessel of the Maritime Police "TEJO", at 06h33.

On board were 13 migrants, three women, one child and nine men, who were transferred to the Maritime Police vessel and transported to Skalaas port, where they landed safely and were handed over to the Greek authorities.

Portugalin meripoliisi Polícia Marítima operoi  meritaksina Egeanmerellä osana Frontexin ihmissalakuljetusoperaatio Poseidonia. Tänään kuljettivat 47 laitonta siirtolaista Kreikan Lesbokselle. Eikä tämä ollut suinkaan ensimmäinen kerta. Ohessa juttu toisesta taksioperaatiosta kesäkuun lopussa, jossa 52 laitonta myös Lesbokselle.

Alun perin tarkoitus oli valvoa EU:n ulkorajoja Kreikan apuna ja taistella rikollisuutta vastaan, mutta nyt taistellaan rajoja vastaan ja tehdään rikoksia.

Maritime police rescues 21 children in a group of 47 migrants in Greece (with video) (9.7.2019)

The Maritime Police team on a mission on the Greek island of Lesbos today rescued a group of 47 migrants, who were aboard a boat bound for the Greek island of Lesbos.

The group, made up of 21 children, 11 women and 15 men, was detected by the Coast Guard Surveillance Vehicle (VVC) of the Maritime Police at 05:40. After the detection, the coordinates were passed to the Maritime Police team that was aboard the vessel "TUBARÃO", which made the interception of the boat at 05:57.

After the interception, the migrants were transferred to the Maritime Police vessel and transported to the port of Skala Skamineas, where they landed safely and were handed over to the Greek authorities.

The Maritime Police is part of the POSEIDON operation, under the umbrella of the European agency FRONTEX and in support of the Greek Coast Guard, with the aim of controlling and monitoring the Greek and external maritime borders of the European Union, combating cross-border crime, within the European Coast Guard.

The Maritime Police team held two boats today, saving 53 migrants on the island of Lesbos, Greece.

The first rescue occurred at 0625, when the Coast Guard detected a boat in front of Lambda, which was intercepted by the vessel of the Maritime Police "TEJO", at 06h33.

On board were 13 migrants, three women, one child and nine men, who were transferred to the Maritime Police vessel and transported to Skalaas port, where they landed safely and were handed over to the Greek authorities.

Frontexin toimintaa pitäisi muuttaa niin että kaikki Kreikan edustalta pelastetut viedään Turkkiin.

Lisäksi kaikki muualta Välimereltä pelastetut pitäisi viedä Tunisiaan.

Jos Turkille ja Tunisialle tarjoaa hyvän diilin eli rahaa niin molemmat suostuvat ja Turkissa EI ole hätää ja Tunisiassa EI ole hätää.

Espanja voisi jo nyt palauttaa kaikki mereltä pelastamansa Marokkoon kahdenvälisen sopimuksen johdosta.

On se kyllä merkillistä kuinka eräiltä rajojen valvonta onnistuu ja toisilta ei. Turkki on muutaman viime päivän aikana pysäyttänyt 800 läpsyttelijää matkalla Eurooppaan.

Kun Frontex yrittää valvoa EU:n ulkorajoja lopputulema on läpsyjen imurointi yli rajojen Eurooppaan.

According to Turkish news agency Anadolu, Turkish security forces have stopped close to 800 migrants near the border with Greece and Bulgaria from crossing into the European Union. Under the EU-Turkey deal from 2016, Turkey agreed to prevent migrants passing through its territory to Europe in exchange for financial aid for refugees in Turkey.

Over the past two days, Turkish security forces have intercepted 777 migrants attempting to cross the border from Turkey and reach the European Union, Turkish state news agency Anadolu reported on Tuesday.

The migrants were caught by "provincial Gendarmerie Command and Mechanized Infantry Brigade Command" in Edirne province west of Istanbul in continental Europe, which borders Greece and Bulgaria. According to Anadolu, the migrants are from countries including Somalia, Morocco, Afghanistan, Syria, Algeria and Bangladesh.

Euroopan unionin virkamiehet ovat hyväksyneet suunnitellut poliittiset ja taloudelliset pakotteet Turkkia vastaan, eurooppalaiset diplomaatit kertoivat maanantaina.

Pakotteet asetettiin sen jälkeen, kun Turkki aloitti maakaasun poraukset EU-maa Kyproksen lähistöllä Välimerellä. EU oli varoittanut Turkkia toistuvasti poraamisesta Kyproksen talousalueella, mutta Turkki lähetti Kyproksen vesille kaksi laivaa.

Pakotteiden tarkasta sisällöstä ei ollut vielä illalla tietoa. Vakavimman Turkkiin kohdistuvista toimista uskotaan olevan 145,8 miljoonan euron leikkaaminen Turkille vuodelle 2020 suunnatusta eurooppalaisesta rahoituksesta.

Rising pressure on migrant centers a concern for government

Authorities are concerned about rising pressure on reception centers for migrants on the islands and on the mainland amid an uptick in arrivals from Turkey.

In the first week of July alone, some 1,000 migrants arrived on the islands of the eastern Aegean, which are currently hosting 17,924 asylum seekers. Transfers of migrants deemed "vulnerable" such as unaccompanied minors, the elderly and pregnant women, are continuing but there are worries as state facilities on the mainland are also close to capacity.

The Marella Discovery picked up 111 migrants, including 33 children, near Greece's Peloponnese peninsula. Despite a large fall in migrants crossing the Mediterranean, six people die each day making the journey.

A Maltese-registered cruise ship sailing close to the Greek mainland has rescued more than a hundred migrants, the country's coastguard said on Sunday.

The migrants were picked up by the Marella Discovery, an 11-deck luxury liner equipped with swimming pools, a casino and theater.

The migrants' boat was found in distress on Saturday evening, some 74 kilometers (40 nautical miles) off Greece's Peloponnese peninsula.

Of the 111 people on board, 33 were children.

The coastguard did not say which countries the migrants were from or where their boat departed.

Luoteis-Kreikassa Artan kaupungissa on pidätetty seitsemästä pakistanilaisesta ja yhdestä kreikkalaisesta muodostunut rikollisjoukkio, joka oli vanginnut 14 pakistanilaista vanhalle siipikarjafarmille ja kiduttanut heitä lunnaiden toivossa. Ransom ring that held, tortured 14 Pakistani nationals busted

Police said on Tuesday they rescued 14 Pakistani nationals that were being held for ransom in an old poultry farm in the town of Arta in northwestern Greece and arrested seven of their fellow countrymen. The owner of the poultry farm, a 66-year-old Greek man, was also arrested.

According to police, the 14 Pakistanis had paid people smugglers to illegally transfer them from their home country to Greece. However, upon their arrival to Greece, the smugglers asked for additional amounts of money from their relatives back home to the tune of 1,000-1,500 euros for each.

Doctors who assessed the health of the 14 victims said they had been subjected to serious physical and psychological torture.

Greek authorities announced Wednesday the unravelling of a crime group that facilitated the illegal exit from Greece to other European Union countries of scores of migrants through the airport of the southeastern Aegean island of Kos over at least 15 months.

The operation was conducted last Friday in Athens and Kos and led to the arrest of six people – two foreign nationals and four Greeks, including a law enforcement official working at the Kos airport police department.

19 undocumented migrants rescued in northern Greece

Police said Monday that they rescued 19 undocumented Bangladeshi and Pakistani migrants who were being held for ransom by a people smuggling gang in a warehouse in Volvi, northern Greece.

One of the gang members, a 26-year-old Pakistani national, was arrested during the police operation, which took place on Saturday. An undisclosed number of members are still at large.

Samos: Successful Airplane Testing for Border Surveillance

From tomorrow and for 28 days, a jet airplane (zepeline) is being run on a trial operation in Samos for the purpose of uninterrupted surveillance of the sea borders in real time and on a 24-hour basis.

Already this 35 meter radar, thermal camera, AIS (Automatic Identification System) and can grow to a height of up to 1,000 m from the base station has successfully completed its system tests.

GNR rescues 39 migrants on Samos Island

The Coastal Control Unit, through military personnel deployed since April on the island of Samos, as part of the mission of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX) rescued , 39 migrants northeast of the island near Cape Prasso.

During a coastal surveillance action, the maritime surveillance team, with the help of a Thermal Vision Vehicle (TVV), detected a suspicious vessel in the Aegean Sea approaching land in the eastern part of the island.

Through the thermal vision equipment, it was possible to verify that it was a rubber boat. Immediately the TVV team made contact with the GNR vessel that was conducting maritime patrols in the area of operation, enabling the rescue of 39 people, including six children, 16 women, one of them four months pregnant and 17 men.

The migrants were placed on the Portuguese vessel and transported to Vathy Harbour, where they landed safely and were handed over to local authorities. Not only was it possible to ascertain that the rescued migrants came mainly from Congo, Cameroon, Senegal, Eritrea and Somalia, but also to transmit police information to the Greek authorities, which made it possible to identify and detain the facilitator of the crossing of these migrants.

GNR, in this FRONTEX mission, develops actions at land and sea borders to prevent, detect and prosecute illicit acts related to illegal immigration, human trafficking and other cross-border crimes, fundamentally contributing to the safeguarding of human lives. To date, in 2019, the deployed GNR military on the island of Samos has detected 280 migrants, having rescued 92 of them.

Police intercept truck crammed with migrants

Two suspected people traffickers, one from Iraq and one from Iran, were in police detention yesterday after officers found 49 undocumented Iraqi migrants crammed into the back of a truck, including children aged between 2 and 11.

It transpired that each migrant had paid between 4,000 and 6,000 euros to the traffickers to smuggle them over the Greek-Turkish land border and transport them to Thessaloniki, then Athens.

On Sunday, the migrants had taken taxis from Omonia to Haidari, where the truck was waiting for them. The traffickers had planned to take them to the west coast where a boat was to take them to Italy, sources said.

Greek police arrest 61 migrants after Thessaloniki violence

Police in Thessaloniki have arrested 61 migrants for illegal residence in the country, in a crackdown following a string of violent incidents near the northern Greek city's main railway station.

Officers were patrolling the area and carrying out identity checks Tuesday after the overnight arrests.

Police said the crackdown followed several violent clashes among rival groups of Afghan and Pakistani migrants over the past few days, which left four men injured - one of whom suffered gunshot wounds.

Hundreds of migrants live in the area round Thessaloniki's railway station where they are dropped off by smuggling gangs bringing them over from Greece's eastern border with Turkey.
