Seven Syrian men seeking asylum taken to Nicosia facility

Seven Syrian men who seek asylum in Cyprus after arriving from the north on Monday evening have been taken to the reception area in Kokkinotrimithia.

The men aged 18, 19, 26, 27, 32, 36, and 40 made their way to Oroklini police station at around 10pm.

They said they travelled from Syria to Turkey and there paid the sum of €600 each to an unknown person who took them by boat to Cyprus.

Portuguese maritime police rescued 25 migrants, including 13 children, 5 women and 7 men, on board a dinghy boat off the Greek island of Lesbos.

The Portuguese navy said in a statement that the boat carrying the migrants, who are all Afghan nationals, was detected by the coastal surveillance team at around 9 pm on Tuesday, which then passed on the coordinates to the team on board the "TEJO" vessel, which rescued the migrants at 9:27pm.

The boat was then towed by the maritime police's vessel to the Skala Skamineas port, where the migrants disembarked safely.

This morning at around 4 am, the Portuguese maritime police, following the request by the Greek authorities and Frontex, started new searches to find migrants.

Four migrants hospitalized after central Athens brawl

Four migrants were hospitalized on Tuesday night following a brawl between two groups of individuals near Omonia Square in central Athens.

Police arrested nine people following the altercation and said it appeared to have been prompted by personal differences between different ethnic groups in the area.

Greece's coast guard launched a search and rescue operation on Thursday to find a boat with migrants stranded in the sea area between the northern Aegean Sea island of Samothrace (or Samothraki) and the town of Alexandroupoli.

Twenty nine migrants rescued in northern Aegean

Greece's coast guard on Thursday found and rescued 29 migrants from a boat drifting in the sea area between the northern Aegean Sea island of Samothrace and the town of Alexandroupoli.

A prosecutor in the city of Larissa, central Greece, has ordered a probe after reports that two Pakistani nationals were physically assaulted last week when they demanded to be paid for working on a livestock farm.

The complaint was filed by the Pakistani Community of Greece and the United Movement Against Racism and the Fascist Threat (KEERFA).

The two groups said at a joint conference on Wednesday that the livestock breeder and two other men attacked the two Pakistanis, telling them he would pay them whenever he wanted.

Police find four children, three adults hidden in truck in northern Greece

Police in northern Greece say they found seven migrants — four of them children — hidden in a furniture truck whose driver allegedly had been paid to take them from Turkey to Germany.

The police force in Thessaloniki said the people on the truck were from Syria and Iraq, and the driver allegedly received 1,500 euros ($1,700) for each of the seven passengers.

European Court Condemns Greece for Treatment of Child Migrants

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Thursday condemned Greece for their treatment of child migrants and refugees in cases dating to early 2016.

It ordered Greece to pay €4,000 to each of the nine migrants and refugees aged between 14 and 17 at the time of the incidents.

The court heard that the migrants and refugees were held in cells in police and border guard stations. The then-teenagers were held there between 21 and 33 days before they were transferred to a reception center.

The ECHR said the conditions in the cells were unsustainable for lengthy detention and included degrading treatment and unlawful detention. The ECHR added that a European committee against torture said detaining unaccompanied minors for "several days or even weeks, without any psychological or social assistance" was unacceptable.

Saaren asukkaiden Vateran rannikolta löytämän ruumiin uskotaan olevan tyttö, joka katosi siirtolaislaivan upottua Lesboksen itäpuolella viime kuussa.

Sunnuntaina toiselta rannalta Lesbokselta löytyi myös naisen ruumis. Kummatkin ruumiit olivat olleet vedessä pitkään.

Police on Saturday intercepted 13 undocumented migrants on the Egnatia Highway in northern Greece following an inspection on a truck being driven by a 63-year-old man who was arrested on charges of attempted smuggling.

The improving weather has been accompanied by an increase in arrivals of undocumented refugees and migrants on the Aegean islands by sea from neighboring Turkey, with the already overcrowded reception center on Samos under rising pressure.

With the Vathy camp already hosting more than 4,000 people – several times its capacity of 650 – the new arrivals pose a real headache for the authorities. Dozens of people are reaching Samos, as well as Lesvos and other islands in the eastern Aegean, daily on boats from Turkey.

The impasse has fueled rising intolerance among residents on Samos, with parents withdrawing their children from one school for two weeks to protest the presence of refugee children in classes. Though the Education Ministry described the move as "an attempt to cultivate a climate of racism and xenophobia," the parents insist they are concerned about public health due to unsanitary conditions at the Vathy camp.

Hundreds of migrants are gathering outside a camp near the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki, planning a long trek through heavily guarded Balkan borders to seek asylum in Europe's prosperous heartland.

Police said more than 500 people, including families with small children, gathered on Thursday in a cornfield outside the Diavata migrant camp, some 10 kilometers (6 miles) west of Thessaloniki, some setting up tents. Dozens more were approaching on foot.

Migrants said they were responding to an anonymous call on social media to go to Greece's border with North Macedonia 60 kilometers (38 miles) away and push through, reviving a migration route that was firmly shut down in 2016.

The United Nations refugee agency has warned migrants against the social media calls, saying irregular border crossings are "risky and dangerous."

Man arrested in northern Greece for transporting migrants

A 36-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday after police found 12 migrants squeezed in a car he was driving in northern Greece, state-run news agency ANA-MPA reported.

Officers who saw the vehicle on a section of the Egnatia highway north of Thessaloniki, signaled to the driver to stop but the man sped up to avoid the inspection.

After he was stopped, police detained the migrants who were identified as nationals of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. They had each paid traffickers 1,200 euros to enter Greece from the border region of Evros and reach Thessaloniki, which was their final destination.

The investigation showed the car had stolen license plates.

The driver, a Georgian national, was led before a prosecutor on Wednesday.

ATHENS/DIAVATA, Greece (Reuters) - Greece on Friday urged hundreds of migrants and refugees who have gathered in a field close to the country's northern border to return to their housing settlements, otherwise they could face sanctions.

Small groups of people including children arrived at a field next to the migrant camp of Diavata near the border with North Macedonia on Thursday.

By Friday morning there were more than 100 tents pitched in the field, prompted by reports on social media of plans for an organized movement to cross Greece's northwest land border with Albania in early April.

In Athens, a group of about 50 migrants squatted on the tracks of the capital's main railway station shouting "Germany!" and "Open the borders." Several more were at the station under heavy police presence.

Services from the station were suspended.

"We want to go to Thessaloniki and then to the borders," said Amin Omar, a 27-year-old Iraqi Kurd sitting on the tracks. "We don't know if they are open."

Greek Migration Minister Dimitris Vitsas appealed to the migrants at the border to return to the accommodation centers.

"It's a lie that the borders will open," he told Greek state television ERT. "In international treaties, there are obligations but there are also sanctions".

About 600 spent the night camping in a field outside the Diavata camp, and there were more clashes in the morning as police blocked the route to the north.

Speaking to the BBC by phone, a Kurdish migrant from Iraq, 25-year-old Bilal Jaf, said "the situation is tense in Diavata camp now - we're afraid that the police will try to evacuate our makeshift camp.

"I live in Greece for 11 months, waiting my asylum request to be examined and I don't know for how long should I wait for that."

Karzan Abdullah, 24, also an Iraqi Kurd, said: "I live in Greece for 12 months - I have to go on in Europe, because there is no life here anymore.

"We are informed that the Greek-North Macedonian border will open today for us. My friends who also want to join the caravan are blocked by the police in Athens railway station."

Hundreds of migrants have occupied the main train station in Athens on Friday demanding to be allowed to travel north to join other migrants near Thessaloniki who attempted on Thursday to push toward the border with North Macedonia.

Migrant families, some holding babies, have staged a sit-in on the railway line at Larisis Station, preventing any trains from approaching or leaving the terminal.

Meanwhile, new clashes erupted between riot police and migrants outside the Diavata reception camp near Thessaloniki, after dozens of women tried to break through the police cordon and were pushed back.

A local news website seleo.gr reported that traffic on Symmahiki Odos on the section near the camp is blocked.

Police forces remain outside the camp where about 500 migrants, including families with small children, have gathered since Thursday, following a call on social media to make a push for the border.

"I am appealing to those people right now... to return to the accommodation centers," Greek Migration Minister Dimitris Vitsas told Greek state television ERT.

"It's a lie that the borders will open," he said. "In international treaties, there are obligations, but there are also sanctions," he added.

Kreikassa on viime vuoden 2018 lokakuusta alkaen 6 000 tunkeutujaa saanut majoituksen 56 hotellissa ympäri maata EU:n rahoittaman ja IOM:n organisoiman Philoxenia-ohjelman kautta.

Rahoituksen piti alun perin loppua jo maaliskuun lopussa, mutta sitä on jatkettu kesäkuun 2019 loppuun, jolloin turistikausi alkaa. Jatkon tilanne on epäselvä. Lisärahoituksesta ei ole tietoa. Kreikan matuministeriö suunnittelee ratkaisevansa ongelman laajentamalla olemassa olevia majoituskeskuksia ja muuttamalla tyhjillään olevia rakennuksia uusiksi majoituskeskuksiksi.

Arrivals continue on eastern Aegean islands but outlook on funding for housing projects is uncertain.

The future of more than 6,000 migrants staying in temporary housing in Greece is under a cloud with funding programs for several projects up in the air as arrivals of more refugees continue to arrive from Turkey. Several temporary housing projects on the mainland, including Philoxenia which is EU-funded and one of the largest, are coming to an end in the summer - during a time when the numbers of migrant arrivals are expected to increase due to better weather conditions.

Philoxenia, which is implemented by the Greek chapter of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) hosts just over 6,000 asylum seekers in 56 hotels around Greece. But it is scheduled to finish at the end of June, with no solid announcements yet as to what will happen afterwards. "The Philoxenia program was supposed to end on March 31, but it was extended until the end of June, when the main tourist season starts. Right now it's unclear as to whether or not the program will be renewed in some shape or form. We are awaiting further developments," Christina Nikolaidou, the IOM press spokesperson, told Infomigrants.

"It has been in operation since October 2018 and provides dignified living conditions in temporary accommodation for asylum seekers, as well as core protection services ensuring identification and assistance of the vulnerable population residing in all targeted facilities, providing case management and monitoring," added Nikolaidou. "There are obviously big challenges for the government and organizations like ourselves as we continue to try and handle this ongoing situation. I expect that there will be announcements well before the end of June as to what alternative arrangements will be made for those staying in temporary accommodation."

Extention of Philoxenia program?

Infomigrants understands that it is likely that the Philoxenia program may be extended further, although how it would be funded if the EU do not continue to support it is unclear.And while there is no official information from the government as yet; according to reports in the local media, Migration Ministry officials are seeking to solve the issue by expanding existing camps as well as creating some new facilities by making use of empty buildings and converting them into accommodation facilities for migrants.

Kiva tilanne tuolla, nyt kun nämä matut on totutettu hotellitasoiseen majoitukseen. Siirtyvät varmaan innoissaan johonkin kälyiseen varastohalliin tai telttaleiriin, juu. Lienee ilmeistä, että alkavat heti hotellipalveluiden päätyttyä rettelöidä ja/tai pamahtavat tuonne pohjoisrajalle. 50 matua sai juuri Ateenan junaliikenteen pysähdyksiin, niin miten sitten 6 000...

Kannattaa varmaan ottaa jotain syöpäläismyrkkyä mukaan, jos on menossa kesälomalla Kreikkaan. Eivät varmaan kauheasti mainostele, mitkä ovat nämä 56 hotellia. No en kyllä muutenkaan menisi, vaikka maksettaisiin. Baltian matuvapaalle suojavyöhykkeelle on mukava autoilla omalla henkilöautolla.

Kreikassa tunkeutujat ovat lauantain aikana jatkaneet kärhämäänsä Diavatan majoituskeskuksen lähistöllä. Tunkeutujat ovat heitelleet poliisia kivillä ja poliisi on vastannut kaasulla ja tainnutuskranaateilla.

Sosiaalisessa mediassa oli levitetty "Caravan of Hope"-nimisen vale-NGO:n arabiankielistä viestiä, jossa kerrottiin Pohjois-Makedonian vastaisen rajan aukeavan 5.4.2019 keskipäivällä (eli eilen) ja että rajan toisella puolella odottaisi bussikuljetus eteen päin.

Juuri kukaan tunkeutujista ei haluaisi jatkaa epätoivoista odotteluaan Kreikassa, vaan he haluaisivat jatkaa matkaansa rikkaampiin Keski- ja Pohjois-Euroopan maihin.

Greek police, migrants clash in third day of protests

DIAVATA, Greece (AP) — Hundreds of protesting migrants clashed with police for a third straight day in northern Greece on Saturday, with migrants throwing rocks at officers who responded with tear gas and stun grenades.

Authorities say the demonstrations outside a migrant camp in Diavata have been triggered by false reports on social media that restrictions on travel to northern Europe had been lifted.

Several migrants, including children, fainted amid the clouds of tear gas Saturday. The protesters have lit fires to make the air more bearable, but blazes have also erupted from exploding stun grenades. In Athens, migrants left a main railway station after blocking trains on Friday and services resumed Saturday.

Greek officials say the migrants have been mobilized by false reports originating on social media that the road to central Europe, tightly sealed to migrants for three years, is open again, and that buses chartered by non-governmental organizations are waiting on the other side of the border with North Macedonia, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) to the north of Diavata.

Greek TV station Ant1 showed a migrant's cellphone screen containing a social media message, in Arabic, sent earlier this week from a purported NGO called "Caravan of Hope" advising migrants that Greece was to open the border with North Macedonia on April 5 at noon.

Almost none of the camp dwellers, and certainly none among the protesters, want to stay in Greece. They want to move on to wealthier central and northern European countries, especially Germany. Many feel trapped in Greece and despair with the slow pace of the processing of asylum applications.

"We have problems here. I arrived a year and a half ago and they have set my (asylum application) interview for December 2021," Shapour Karimi, 43, an Iranian and father of one child, told the Associated Press. "What will I do all this time? A solution must be found so we can depart."

Aamalla ihmettelin uutista, muistaakseni itävaltalaisessa diePresse-lehdessä, jossa otsikoitiin jotenkin niin, että "Maahanmuuttajat käyttävät (naisia?) ja lapsia kilpinään". Kuvassa kulki mies kohti poliiseja kantaen lasta suorin käsin edessään ilmiselvästi suojakilven tarkoituksessa. Uutinen kuitenkin muuttui päivän mittaan ja sitä kuvaa ei ollut myöhemmin enää missään. Ilmeisesti lehti oli joutunut ottamaan rohkeutensa takia takapakkia. Tällainen otsikko ja kuva ei olisi vielä 2015 ja 2016 tullut kysymykseen. Ihmisten kommentitkit ovat koventuneet ja tuskin ketään enää tällainen teatteri säälittää.
