Boston police captain's son gets 20 years for terror plot

A Boston police captain's son, who authorities called a "committed soldier" of the Islamic State group, was sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday for plotting to use assault rifles and homemade bombs to kill Americans on a college campus.

Alexander Ciccolo, who went by the name Ali Al Amriki, pleaded guilty to terrorism charges in May, three years after his father alerted the FBI about his son's desire to fight for the terror group.

Ciccolo's lawyers said the man, who dealt with mental health and substance abuse issues, had poorly thought out plans and no real ability to carry out the attack. Authorities, meanwhile, described him as a loyal Islamic-State group supporter devoted to inflicting "maximum damage" upon the United States.

"Make no mistake, Alexander Ciccolo was a committed soldier of ISIS who wanted to kill innocent people at a United States university with assault rifles and pressure cooker bombs, not an unwitting dupe who didn't understand the gravity of what he was doing," Hank Shaw, special agent in charge of the Boston FBI office, said in a statement.

Ciccolo was arrested in July 2015 after he received four guns he ordered from a person who was cooperating with the FBI. He pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and attempting to use weapons of mass destruction, among other charges, one month before he was set to go on trial.

Prosecutors said he also planned to use homemade bombs similar to the pressure cookers used in the deadly 2013 Boston Marathon attack. Ciccolo was seen buying a pressure cooker shortly before his arrest.

Lawyers for Ciccolo, 26, identified the school in court documents as New Mexico State University.

After Ciccolo was arrested, he stabbed a prison nurse in the head more than 10 times, authorities said.

Woman jailed for trying to incite terror attack against Belgium World Cup squad

A WOMAN has reportedly been jailed for trying to incite a terror attack against the Belgium World Cup squad.

The squad were allegedly targeted after a message was sent calling for an attack during the team's celebrations in Brussels on July 15 following their return from Russia

According to La Derniere Heure and reported by ESPN, the woman has been named as Yousra Bouhaltit Soulaimane.

The 25-year-old is in jail and awaiting a trial after being put in custody in early August.

Eric Van Der Sypt, the federal court's spokesperson, told AFP that she has been charged with "incitement to commit a terrorist act."

It is understood that she has denied sending the message.

German teen arrested for plotting bomb attack on gay nightclub

A German teenager has been arrested on suspicion he was planning an Islamic extremist bombing attack in the Frankfurt area, prosecutors said Thursday.

Frankfurt prosecutors' spokesman Sinan Akdogan told the Associated Press the 17-year-old was arrested by Hesse state police Sept. 1 and ordered held by a judge on suspicion of preparing a serious act of violence.

The information leading to the arrest, provided by the US, indicated the suspect was planning to attack a gay nightclub in Frankfurt and a Catholic church in the city, according to an official with access to intelligence information, who discussed it on condition of anonymity.

Akdogan would not comment on the target or the source of the information, citing the ongoing investigation.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect had instructions on how to make explosives and was trying to procure chemicals online, Akdogan said.

It was not clear how advanced the preparations were, but Akdogan said small amounts of chemicals were found during a search of the suspect's home in Florstadt, northeast of Frankfurt.

The suspect's name was withheld for privacy reasons and Akdogan said he could not give further details on the planned attack.

Syria-bound Swiss man held in Bulgaria on terror charges

A heavily-armed Swiss man has been detained at Bulgaria's eastern border with Turkey and charged with terrorism after allegedly planning to go to Syria, prosecutors announced on Thursday.

The man, whose identity has not been revealed, was arrested at Bulgaria's main Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint on Tuesday and charged for "terrorism and arms smuggling," prosecutors said in a statement.

Two automatic rifles, a smoothbore hunting rifle, a SIG Sauer pistol and ammunition for the weapons were found in his car as well as 24 knives and a map of his route showing the Syrian city of Idlib as his final destination, the statement added.

The arrest followed an alert put out by the Swiss authorities after the man's father had reported him and his vehicle missing, together with the arms and ammunition.

The man told prosecutors that he wanted to help civilians in Syria.   

A court will decide on Friday whether to extend his detention beyond the initial 72 hours and place him under formal arrest.

Bulgaria is a major crossing point on the route for Europeans heading to join the jihadist Islamic State organisation in Syria and Iraq but border arrests have dwindled since peaking in 2015.

A major military operation is expected in the coming weeks against the opposition-held province of Idlib, with aid agencies warning of a possible humanitarian catastrophe as a result.

Belgian security services have prevented numerous attacks, Charles Michel said during an interview with La Dernière Heure on Saturday.

However, he added that the threat to Belgium still exists, even though the threat level has dropped to 2 after having remained at 3 for months.

The Prime Minister said the threat has changed since the time of the attacks, when authorities were up against structured organisations. "Today, we are dealing with isolated individuals who becomes radicalised all on their own", he said. He assured the public that the security services are still on constant alert.

Charles Michel told the paper how magistrates have dealt with dozens of terrorist cases and have convicted dozens of people. "Every conviction prevents potentially serious incidents. Our security services have definitely prevented numerous attacks".

Norway Convicts Man of Providing Terror Attack Instructions

A man has been convicted of terror offenses in Norway for providing online instructions on how to carry out attacks and sentenced to 2 ½ years in prison.

A district court west of Oslo ruled that the 51-year-old engineer of Iranian descent had urged others to commit terror acts.

The court also ruled Monday that the man, from January 2014 until his arrest on May 11, 2015, had urged the Islamic State group to kill a Jordanian and a Syrian government pilot that it had captured.

The man, who was arrested at the engineering firm Aker Solutions outside Oslo, had denied calling for acts of terror, adding that he had wanted to infiltrate IS to destroy it from the inside.

He wasn't identified by the court because of privacy rules.

Terror-plot defence cites teens' intensity

A Sydney teenager's intense feelings for his young wife meant he would never have contemplated or intended carrying out a terrorist attack knowing it would separate them, a jury has been told.

The "inevitable consequence" of such a plan would have been the separation of Sameh Bayda and his wife Alo-Bridget Namoa through his death or incarceration, his barrister Alissa Moen said on Tuesday.

"My submission is that the whole of the evidence is overwhelming about the intensity of the relationship between Mr Bayda and Ms Namoa."

She noted his attachment to Namoa, submitting "the prospect of doing something to separate him from her is not an inference you will draw when you look at all the evidence".

Ms Moen was making final submissions at the NSW Supreme Court trial of the couple, both now 21, who have pleaded not guilty to conspiring to do an act in preparation for a terrorist act.

The Crown alleges their plot ran between December 8, 2015 and January 25, 2016, the day of Bayda's arrest, and involved detonating an improvised device, an incendiary device or using a bladed weapon.

Prosecutor Nicholas Robinson QC says the "vast"amount of extremist material, including graphic videos, images and communications to each other, found on their phones reflected their religious ideology of advancing Islam by violence.

Two people were arrested in Copenhagen on Wednesday and charged with attempting to supply Islamic State with drones, which the organization has used to carry out attacks, police said.

The two were arrested after police and Danish security and intelligence services carried out raids in Copenhagen, the police said in a statement.

The two persons are suspected of being members of a broader network that ships drones and other supplies to Islamic State from Denmark for use in combat, the police said. The police did not release their names or any details about them.

They were charged with attempting to collude with terrorism abroad and will appear in court on Thursday, the police said in a statement.

Footage has emerged of the moment a group of terror suspects were pulled from a van in a series of raids in the Netherlands.

It is believed that the extremist attack would have involved the use of suicide vests, assault rifles and car bombs if it had been successful.

However, armed police descended on Arnhem and Weert where they carried out multiple arrests at different locations.

Local media identified the ringleader of the attack as Hardi N and said that he was planning to attack a 'major event' and have 'many victims'.

Seven men in total were arrested on suspicion of plotting a large-scale extremist attack.

The national prosecutor's office said in a statement that heavily armed police arrested the men in the towns of Arnhem, about 62 miles south of Amsterdam, and Weert in the southern Netherlands close to the borders of Germany and Belgium.

Syrian man, 21, is arrested in Berlin for 'plotting a chemical attack on Israel and recruiting terrorists on behalf of ISIS'

A Syrian man accused of plotting a chemical attack on Israel and recruiting extremist terrorists to ISIS has been arrested in Berlin.

Hooded SEK (Special Deployment Commando) officers armed with assault rifles stormed a restaurant last Thursday and wrestled the man to the ground, while riot police secured the road with submachine guns.

The 21-year-old was originally wanted for an assault that took place on April 14 in the Wittenau area of Berlin.

The man and accomplices are alleged to have seriously injured a man who owed the suspect 4000 euros, kicking him in the head and holding a knife to his neck, reported Bild.

Police finally tracked him down in a restaurant on the popular Sonnenallee in the district of Neukölln at around 6pm last Thursday. He remains in custody. 

'The man was wanted by warrant for dangerous assault and coercion,' a police spokesman said. 'He is a great danger.'

However according to the German website Bild, the assault is only half the story and the Syrian is also alleged to have planned a terrorist attack in Israel with chemical weapons. 

In addition, he is said to have recruited fighters for an Islamist jihad ('Holy War').   

According to BILD information, Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), Germany's Federal Intelligence Service received evidence some months ago from a foreign partner service regarding the man.

The information was passed on to the Berlin security authorities, who intercepted the suspect's phones.

The Syrian is said to have arrived some time ago with a fake passport from Libya. A house search did not produce any clear evidence.

French police seize weapons, detain 3 in anti-terror raids

French police detained three people and seized weapons during raids of a dozen homes and the headquarters of a Muslim association based outside the port city of Dunkirk during an anti-terrorism operation early Tuesday, officials said.

Authorities froze the funds of the Centre Zahra France, along with those of three other organizations and four men linked to the groups.

Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said the prefecture of the region was in the process of closing the prayer room of Zahra France, headquartered in Grande-Synthe. He said the three detained were taken in for illegal weapons possession. Police didn't say what types of weapons were found.

About 200 police officers searched homes and the headquarters of the association.

Some French media reports said that Zahra France was a leading center for Shiite Islam in Europe and is suspected of links to Iranian-backed Hezbollah, based in Lebanon, and fighting in Syria or to the Palestinian Hamas. The information couldn't be immediately confirmed.

One Zahra France official cited in the order to freeze funds, Yahia Gouasmi, 68, told CNews TV channel that the weapons were solely "for the security of the center" and mainly belonged to Zahra France's security detail.

Judge shelves probe into officer who shot man in Barcelona knife attack

Magistrate finds that Abdelouahab Taib "put himself in danger" by yelling "Allah" just after the anniversary of the terrorist attacks in Catalonia

A female officer from the Catalan regional police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra, has been cleared of any wrongdoing by a local court for fatally shooting a man at the Cornellà de Llobregat police station in Barcelona.

The incident occurred on August 20 at around 6am when the man, named as Abdelouahab Taib, entered the precinct carrying a knife and shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is the greatest).

The court in Cornellà, which is in charge of investigating the police response to the attack, has shelved the case, concluding that the officer used her service weapon as a last resort and only because her life was at risk. The attack occurred shortly after the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils.

In the court records, to which EL PAÍS has had access, the judge says that Taib launched a "direct attack" aimed at killing the female officer. According to the judge's records, Taib entered the station and, when he was "just centimeters" from the front desk – an area with a glass front from which officers deal with members of the public for security reasons – he pulled out a "large knife" from his clothes and tried to stab her, as seen in newly released security camera images of the incident. As he pulls out the weapon, Taib screams "Allahu Akbar" and other Arabic phrases that the officer was not able to understand.

Northwest Side Chicago man charged in ISIS terror case

An Iraqi-born Chicago man is in federal custody, charged with using ISIS social media platforms to recruit violent jihadists.

Ashraf Al Safoo, 34, was arrested on Wednesday morning following a raid on his home in the 5200-block of North Virginia Avenue. Al Safoo had been held by FBI agents assigned to the bureau's Joint Terrorism Task Force.

A lengthy criminal complaint unsealed Friday afternoon provides details of Al Safoo's alleged campaign to find fighters via the internet who were interested in committing terror attacks in the U.S. and elsewhere. Although not named or charged, authorities say he worked with others in the alleged terror support plot.

Federal investigators said that the web developer, whose bio states he was trained in Malaysia, used written social media posts, audio clips and videos to recruit terrorists.

Among the internet screen grabs of Islamist propaganda allegedly used by Al Safoo is a gruesome, full-color illustration of a headless Santa Claus accompanied by the line: "The Khilafahs presents are on their way." Other freeze frames allegedly from the Chicago man's recruiting efforts show apparent terrorists with guns, imminent attacks on Christmas celebrants and a time bomb inside a gift box.

Al Safoo appeared in federal court Friday where he was ordered held without bond until a detention hearing Oct. 25.

Prosecutors said he was a danger to the community and a flight risk. They described him as the lead writer of a group that distributed ISIS propaganda. Authorities said he told followers to "Participate in the war. Spread fear."

Civil engineer whose Facebook account was reactivated nine times despite him continuing to post ISIS propaganda is found GUILTY of sharing terrorist material

A terror suspect who was arrested following the 9/11 atrocities was allowed by Facebook to continue spreading ISIS propaganda from his home in the UK.

Abdulrahman Alcharbati, 32, now faces years behind bars after being found with a bomb-making manual when Facebook disabled and then reactivated his account nine times between December 2016 and March last year.

When he was eventually arrested last May, the married father was found to have detailed step-by-step instructions on how to make viable suicide vests, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

The civil engineer, who worked for Capita and the Institute of Civil Engineers at Newcastle University, spent months posting videos and messages glorifying ISIS to his 6,400 friends and followers on Facebook.

The social media giant was quick to notice the videos - one of which showed Syrian soldiers being dragged to their deaths behind motorbikes in Raqqa.

His account was suspended 'permanently' in December 2016 but was then reinstated nine times in the following three months as moderators were subjected to a barrage of angry emails from Alcharbati.

In some cases, Facebook apologised to him for his inconvenience at having his account disabled.

There was footage of a suicide bomber driving away before detonating a car packed with explosives and the Arabic message 'Drink death with happiness' emblazoned over it.

Another urged those watching: 'Get an American or French Kafir (disbeliever) and whack them with a rock, cut their throat with a knife, crush them with a car, suffocate or poison them, do not fail.'

Giving evidence in the trial, Alcharbati said he was not a terrorist but had been suffering a long-standing mental illness which caused delusions causing him to think he was Jesus Christ.

From the witness box he told Newcastle Crown Court: 'I am not a terrorist, I just swore on the Koran. I don't think ISIS are good, I don't think Al Qaeda are good.

'Terrorism is like a nightmare to me but I have been in jail for 16 months over this. Do I look like a terrorist to you?

'I shared their posts on Facebook because I was unwell. I thought I was a prophet and could stop the war in Syria, that I could stop all these people from dying.'

Alcharbati denied six counts of disseminating terrorist material and one count of possessing a document containing information likely to be of use to a person preparing or committing an act of terrorism but was convicted unanimously of all charges by a jury who deliberated for 2hrs 50 minutes.

He now faces a lengthy term in prison or a hospital order.

Spanish police arrest 2 men suspected of belonging to IS, Al-Qaida groups

Police in eastern Spain on Tuesday arrested two Syrian nationals suspected of spreading extremist Islamist propaganda online, the interior ministry said.

According to a statement, the pair, aged 55 and 58, were arrested near Valencia and Alicante respectively, and could face charges of belonging and collaborating with a terror organization as well as promoting acts of terror and indoctrination.

Five Terror Attacks Thwarted by France This Year

French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner has claimed that French security services have foiled at least five serious terror plots in the last year including one linked to Iran.

Mr Castaner, who was appointed Interior Minister by President Emmanuel Macron earlier this month following the resignation of former minister Gerard Collomb, said that despite foiling the attacks, the terror threat to France remains high, Le Journal du Dimanche reports.

Several factors keep the threat of terror high including the number of returning jihadis from the Middle East.

"Some must be followed as a priority: those with psychological vulnerabilities, those who could have firearms, the 'ghosts' of Iraq or Syria – which represents 261 adults identified in France," Castaner said.

"There are also the 700 French people who are still in the zone, particularly in Idlib, whose attempts to return are to be monitored, and those who have been convicted in cases related to a risk of terrorism or who have become radicalised in prison and who will be coming out soon," he added.

According to Minister of Justice Nicole Belloubet, around 50 Islamist terrorists and 450 radicalised Islamists could be set free from prison by the end of 2019.

The Assistant Commissioner responsible counter-terror, Neil Badu has revealed that a record number of terror investigations are being conducted in the UK, with around 80% focused on the threat from Islamic extremism.

Speaking Parliament's Home Affairs Committee today, Commissioner Badu said that the dreadful series of terror attacks carried recently "were not a temporary escalation of the threat" but a "sustained shift of that threat".

He said that the "overriding threat remains those inspired by Daesh (ISIS) and the resurgent Al Qaeda" along with "very disturbing" extreme right-wing threats.

He revealed that since the Westminster attack 17 more plots had been thwarted and revealed that 700 terror inquiries are being carried out by police and MI5, with "about 80% of those investigations will continue to be Islamist jihadist threat".

It is a sobering reminder of the threat the country faces. Our security services must be given the resources they require, and politicians must not shy away from tackling extremism head on.

Algerian-born Irish citizen Damache sentenced to 15 years in prison

Algerian-Irish jihadist Ali Charaf Damache, who pleaded guilty to terrorism charges in July, has been sentenced to 15 years in jail, prosecutors in Philadelphia said.

Damache, 53, known by the online pseudonym "Theblackflag," was arrested in Spain in 2015, where he was suspected of plotting the murder of a Swedish cartoonist who had lampooned the Prophet Mohammed.

He was extradited to the United States in 2017, accused of being the ringleader of a jihadist cell that was plotting attacks in Europe and southern Asia.

Ex-California student admits to aiding Syrian terror group

A former California college student has pleaded guilty to charges of aiding a terrorist organization after earlier arguing he was entitled to immunity because he hooked up with the kind of Syrian rebels the U.S. has backed.

Twenty-five-year-old Aws Mohammed Younis Al-Jayab admitted in a plea agreement Wednesday to flying from Chicago to Turkey in 2013, then traveling to Syria. The agreement says he joined Ansar Al-Islam, a precursor to the Islamic State group.

The agreement calls for a prison sentence of up to 15 years.

Al-Jayab told the judge he wanted to fight the Bashar al-Assad regime, but acknowledged the group he was joining engaged in terrorist actions.

He returned to the U.S. in 2014 and settled in Sacramento, California, where he enrolled at a community college.

Syrian under formal investigation for planning terror attack in France: report

A French judge has placed a young Syrian man under formal investigation and charged him with planning a terrorist attack on French soil, news channel BFMTV reported on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old was arrested last week with six other people in Le Mans, western France, as part of a preliminary investigation into "association of terrorist criminals to commit crimes and attack people," it added.

According to the report, investigators believed the suspect "wanted to act" after they found several videos at his home in which he pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) and denounced "disbelievers" as well as called for attacks on them, according to the report.

The suspect illegally entered France in April 2018 with false papers after French authorities rejected his asylum request.

Officers arrested a 57-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman at an address in north London on Friday.

The woman was arrested on suspicion of possessing money or property for the purposes of terrorism contrary to section 16 of Terrorism Act 2000.
