Brother of suicide bomber who killed 30 is convicted of preparing for terror attack after buying 500 ball bearings online

A dentistry student and son of a former British solider has been found guilty of preparing for a terror attack .

Mohammed Abbas Idris Awan, who was "radicalised" by his suicide bomber brother, bought 500 ball bearings and had graphic videos showing how to kill and kidnap victims.

The 24-year-old was convicted of preparing for an undefined terrorist attack after a three week trial and has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

His brother Rizwan Awan, 27, killed 30 people in a bomb blast in Iraq in 2016.

Awan, who was in the fourth year of a dentistry course at Sheffield University, "adopted an outwardly innocent and respectable persona with the clear intention" to "perpetrate a terrorist act without being detected."

He also "rejoiced in the ritual executions and mutilation of other human beings being perpetrated by ISIS in the name of Islamic extremism", Sheffield Crown Court heard.

Awan was arrested by police on June 1, 2017 after buying 500 ball bearings online.

During a trial he told Sheffield Crown Court he found out his brother had died after seeing it on BBC News.

Awan was found to possess a "significant volume" of extremist material, including advice on how to be a "sleeper cell" in the West.

He "retained documents" from his brother "which celebrated brutal and depraved acts of terror such as beheadings, burning of people alive and the Charlie Hebdo murders in Paris in 2015."

Police seized 11 mobile phones, 16 USB memory sticks and seven computers in raids at addresses in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, were he was studying at uni and Huddersfield, West, where he was raised.

Police believe they may have thwarted a Christmas terror attack plot with the arrest of four men, it was reported.

The men were arrested on suspicion of plotting an Islamist terror attack as armed police carried out a series of dramatic pre-dawn raids and a bomb squad inspected a residence over fears it contained explosives.

Anti-terror police worked with MI5 as they detained three men aged 22, 36 and 41, at different addresses in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, while a 31-year-old man was arrested in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

The arrests - on the one-year anniversary of the Berlin Christmas market attack - come after the terror group ISIS urged its supporters to kill innocent people at Christmas markets and other tourist attractions in Europe and the US.

Saksan poliisi esti viime hetkellä iskun joulumarkkinoille - Isisin kouluttama mies aikoi ajaa kuorma-autolla väkijoukkoon

Saksan Freiburgissa syntynyt ja Irakissa Isisin kouluttama mies oli palannut Saksaan takaisin heinäkuussa.

Saksan erikoispoliisin keskiviikkona pidättämää 29-vuotiasta Dasbar W. -nimistä miestä epäillään nyt valtion turvallisuutta uhanneen rikoksen valmistelusta, Isisin propagandavideoiden hallussapidosta ja niiden levittämisestä internetissä.

Mies oli Bild-lehden mukaan kertonut tutkijoille aikoneensa iskeä Karlsruhen Schlossplatzin luistinradan vieressä oleville joulumarkkinoille kuorma-autolla, pikkubussilla tai muulla ajoneuvolla tarkoituksenaan tappaa mahdollisimman monta ihmistä. Karlsruhen Schlossplatz on ollut eristettynä jo 4. joulukuuta lähtien terroripelkojen takia.

Uutistoimisto DPA:n mukaan poliisi on tarkkaillut miehen toimia jo pidemmän aikaa. Mies on Bildin mukaan hakenut autonkuljettajan paikkaa erilaisista kuljetusyrityksistä, mutta tuloksetta.

Dasbar W. on syntynyt Freiburgissa, mutta hänen vanhempansa ovat irakilaisia. Badische Zeitungin mukan epäilty on oleskellut Irakissa vuosina 2015 ja 2016. Siellä hän on ollut yhteydessä terrorijärjestö Isisiin ja saanut koulutusta tuliaseiden käytössä.

Poliisi on tarkkaillut miehen toimia pidemmän aikaa kuitenkaan pystymättä estämään vihapuheen levittämistä intternetissä ja tietäen tämän hakuyrityksestä kuorma-auton kuljettajaksi.

ISIS supporter planned lone-wolf style terror attack in Virginia

An ISIS supporter who planned a "lone-wolf style terror attack" in Virginia was sentenced to 20 years in prison, according to the United States Attorney's Office. Lionel Williams, 27, of Suffolk, was arrested in December 2016.

"Lionel Williams planned to conduct a lone-wolf style terror attack," Dana J. Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said. "He adhered to a radicalized version of Islam, publically declared his allegiance to ISIS on social media, and ordered an AK-47 assault rifle the day after the San Bernardino terrorist attack. What started with radicalized internet postings escalated to attempts to help ISIS buy weapons and ammunition, and ended with a plan to kill law enforcement officers here in Virginia. I want to thank the FBI's Norfolk Field Office and the Suffolk Police Department for their extraordinary work on this case."

An affidavit filed in the case indicated that in March 2016 a member of the public told the FBI that Williams had been posting videos and content in support of ISIL on Facebook. The individual also told the FBI that Williams had recently acquired an AK-47 assault rifle.

In late April 2016 Williams, who also goes by the name of Harun Ash-Shababi, was "friended" on Facebook by an FBI-controlled persona.

Williams met with and FBI Undercover Employee in mid June when he reportedly stated that he supports attacks on "hard targets." The FBI believes "hard targets" are police officers, military and other targets that have the ability to defend themselves.  Williams also allegedly stated that if he were to conduct an attack, he would target someone who could fight back. He also told the FBI employee that he had not carried out an attack because his grandmother is still alive and he needed to care for her.

The affidavit also alleged that in October and November 2016, Williams sent money to a person he believed was collecting money for ISIL to purchase weapons and ammunition for ISIL fighters.

In addition, the court documents state that the investigation revealed that Williams ordered an AK-47 assault rifle the day after the December 2015 terror attack in San Bernardino, California. Two firearms, including an AK-47 and a semi-automatic handgun, were recovered in a post-arrest search of Williams' Suffolk home.

A neighbor says she never suspected this. "Lionel has been a good young man. He converted to Islam about five years ago," said Irene Stewart. "I just don't see it. I just really don't see it. To me, he he's a good man."

Williams will have a lifetime of supervised release once he gets out of prison.

Terror suspect, 31, appears at the Old Bailey over 'encouraging fanatics to attack Prince George at his primary school in online post of an ISIS jihadist beside the four-year-old future king'

An alleged ISIS supporter accused of sharing details of Prince George's school on social media will go on trial in the spring.

Husnain Rashid, 31, made the post about the four-year-old prince on messaging app Telegram, it is alleged.

The British national, of Nelson, Lancashire, also allegedly planned to travel to Syria to join ISIS.

He was arrested on November 22 and charged with preparing acts of terrorism and assisting others to prepare acts of terrorism.

He appeared at the Old Bailey via video link from Wandsworth prison and spoke only to confirm his date of birth and British nationality.

Mr Justice Haddon-Cave set a four-week trial at Woolwich Crown Court to be heard before Judge Andrew Lees from April 30.

A plea hearing was also set for April 13. The defendant was remanded into custody.

California Man Arrested for Attempting to Provide Material Support to A Terrorist Organization

A federal complaint was unsealed today, charging Everitt Aaron Jameson, 26, of Modesto, with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and United States Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced. Jameson was arrested today and is scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara A. McAuliffe in Fresno, California at 2pm. 

According to court documents, Jameson had several online interactions with a confidential source in which he expressed support for the October 31, 2017, terrorist attack in New York City and offered his services for "the cause."  In subsequent communications with an undercover agent, Jameson referred to his training in the U.S. military and noted he had been trained for combat and war.  Jameson later met with another undercover agent whom he believed to be associated with the senior leadership of the foreign terrorist organization, ISIS (the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, also known as ISIL).  During his interactions with this undercover agent, Jameson offered to carry out violent acts and to provide financial support for the terrorist organization.

"The Department of Justice works resolutely every day to prevent terrorist attacks," said Attorney General Sessions.  "In my time back at the Department, nothing has impressed me more.  Today, our incredible law enforcement officers have once again helped thwart an alleged plot to kill Americans. I want to thank the FBI agents and federal prosecutors and everyone else who helped make this possible. The threat from radical Islamic terrorism is real—and it is serious—but the American people can be assured that the Department of Justice remains vigilant in protecting our homeland."

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) - Officials have stopped a man who reportedly stated that "Christmas was the perfect day" for a terror attack in San Francisco and "did not need an escape plan because he was ready to die."

We've learned the FBI has arrested a man by the name of Everitt Aaron Jameson from Modesto. According to a handwritten letter obtained by the FBI, Jameson also referred to himself as Abdallah adu Everitt ibn Gordon.

Yksi ruotsalainen ja kolme hollantilaista miestä pidätettiin Rotterdamissa epäiltyinä islamiin liittyvistä terrorismirikoksista.

Bostonilaisen poliisipäällikön pojan Alexander Ciccolon terrorismioikeudenkäynti alkaa 18. kesäkuuta. Ciccolo pidätettiin heinäkuussa 2015 ja häntä epäillään terrori-iskun suunnittelusta collegen kampusalueelle ISISin tukemiseksi. The son of a Boston police captain charged with plotting a terrorist attack on a college campus to support the Islamic State group heads to trial next year.

A federal judge last week scheduled 25-year-old Alexander Ciccolo's trial to start June 18.

Ciccolo, of Adams, was arrested in July 2015 after receiving guns from a federal informant. Prosecutors say he planned to detonate homemade bombs similar to the pressure cooker bombs used in the 2013 Boston Marathon attack.

He pleaded not guilty to charges including attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

Ciccolo's attorney has said in court filings the government's plan to hide the identities of witnesses has hampered his ability to build a defense.

Ciccolo's mother has said her son "would not hurt a fly."

Germany Charges Alleged Islamic State Member

German prosecutors have charged an alleged member of the Islamic State group who spent time in Syria with membership in a terrorist organization and committing a war crime.

Federal prosecutors said Wednesday that the 32-year-old German citizen, identified only as Abdelkarim E. B. in line with local privacy rules, left Germany for Syria in 2013 and joined IS. They said he received weapons training and fought for the group.

Prosecutors say that, during fighting near Aleppo in November 2013, the man's unit beat and kicked a captured fighter from an enemy militia and threatened him with torture. The suspect is also accused of filming the scene.

The man is already in custody in a separate case, which prosecutors gave no details of.

Turkin poliisi varautuu uudenvuoden juhlintaan: 120 henkilöä pidätettiin epäiltynä kytköksistä Isisiin

Turkin poliisi on suorittanut laajan operaation, jossa 120 henkilöä pidätettiin epäiltynä kytköksistä ISIS-järjestöön. Pidätysten seurauksena 29 henkilöä vangittiin maan pääkaupungissa Ankarassa. Useat pidätetyistä olivat ulkomaiden kansalaisia.

Pidätykset ovat osa maan uudenvuoden juhlien turvallisuustiukennuksia, Reuters kertoo.

Operaatioon osallistui 500 poliisia. Pidätyksillä pyritään turvaamaan maan uudenvuoden juhlintaa.

Pidätysten seurauksena löydetystä materiaalista pääteltiin, että jotkut epäillyistä olivat suunnitelleet iskua uudellevuodelle. Syyttäjä asetti pidätysmääräyksen 46 henkilöstä.

Viime vuonna uudenvuoden juhlien aikaan mies tappoi 39 henkilöä yökerhossa Istanbulissa. Silloin iskun tekijäksi ilmoittautui terroristijärjestö ISIS.

Turkki aikoo lisätä poliisien määrää uudenvuoden aattona Istanbulissa ja kieltää julkiset juhlat keskusalueilla turvallisuussyistä.

Irakin kurdit Andy Star, 31, ja Farhad Salah, 22, pidätettiin 19. joulukuuta terrorismiteon valmistelusta epäiltyinä. Suunnitelmana oli sijoittaa pommi kuskittomaan itseohjautuvaan autoon ja räjäyttää se joulun aikaan.

A chip shop owner terror suspect and his friend appeared in court today accused of planning to build a remote control car bomb to detonate from a laptop for an alleged Christmas massacre.

Fish and chip shop owner Andy Star, 31, and Farhad Salah, 22, were arrested on December 19 in a series of early morning raids in the Chesterfield and Sheffield areas of South Yorkshire.

Today both appeared in custody at Westminster Magistrates Court via video link from Leeds Magistrates Court.

Both men, of Iraqi origin, spoke only confirm their name, age and address, and are both accused of  a single terror count, which they will deny.

They allegedly planned to build an IED that would be placed inside a driverless car, with a laptop controlling the vehicle and detonating the device.

Prosecutor Thomas Halpin said: 'Both are jointly charged with a single offence of preparation to commit acts of terrorism.

He added: 'This is a case in which the Crown say both defendants were researching, developing and manufacturing chemicals to make explosive substances so they could be used in an IED with a view to committing acts in the UK.

'On December 14, Salah on Facebook messenger, informs a friend that they had made an IED that purportedly could be placed in a driverless car controlled by a laptop.

'In another Facebook message, Mr Salah on December 16 informs a friend that he is intending to test the explosive on Tuesday, December 19 – the day they were arrested.'

Star was arrested by counter-terrorism police on Tuesday at the flat above his Mermaid Fish Bar in Chesterfield.

The two men, both Kurdish Iraqis, were dressed in prison issue tracksuits.

A number of other plastic bags, tubs and copper piping were recovered after raids on the suspects' homes in Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.

It is not clear how the men were allegedly planning to obtain a driverless car, with the plot described by Mr Halpin as being in its early stages. But Sajad Chaudhury, defending Star, said he was using the nitrocellulose powder, which is commonly known as guncotton, to make fireworks for the New Year's Eve celebrations.

The court heard that his co-accused Salah also denies sending those messages, claiming his Facebook account had been hacked.

Mr Chaudhury told the court: 'The offence is denied and at the first opportunity at the crown court he will indicate a not guilty plea.'

He said of Star, who came to the UK in 2008 before being granted leave to remain in 2016 after setting up a fish and chip shop in Chesterfield: 'With the items found, fuses and explosive items, you would assume this is a terrorist bomb-making factory except for when the police interviewed Andy Star he made it crystal clear, "what I have done is essentially prepare fireworks".'

The pair were among four men arrested on December 19.

South Yorkshire Police said a 36-year-old man from Burngreave in Sheffield remains in custody, while a 41-year-old from Meersbrook in Sheffield was released on Saturday.

Star, who owns the Mermaid Fish and Chip Bar on Sheffield Road in Chesterfield, and bearded Salah, who lives in Brunswick Road, Sheffield, were remanded in custody by District Judge Tan Ikram ahead of a hearing at the Old Bailey on January 19.

Turkey detains 20 suspected Daesh members, including 15 foreigners: police

Turkish police have detained 20 people, including 15 foreign nationals, on suspicion of links to Daesh (ISIS) during raids in Istanbul, tightening security ahead of the anniversary of a nightclub attack in which dozens were killed.

The raids by the anti-terrorist branch of the Istanbul police took place on Saturday and targeted four locations across the city, the police said in a statement on Sunday. They did not give the nationalities of the foreign suspects.

The state-run Anadolu news agency said the suspects were believed to have been planning an attack during New Year's Eve celebrations in the city.

Turkish police have been ramping up operations against suspected Daesh militants in recent days, detaining around 195 on Thursday and Friday.

During New Year's celebrations a year ago, a man with an assault rifle shot dead 39 people including Turks and visitors from several Arab nations, India and Canada at an exclusive nightclub in Istanbul, the country's biggest city.

An Iraqi national was arrested Monday in central Turkey for his suspected links to the Daesh terrorist organization, according to a police official.

The suspect, identified by the initials M. H. A. K, was arrested in central Kayseri province in an operation launched by Turkish police's anti-terrorism teams, said the official, who asked not to be named due to restrictions on talking to the media.

The official said an arrest warrant for the suspect, who is said to be a senior member of the terrorist organization, was already issued.

A TERROR couple have been found guilty of plotting a devastating bomb attack over Christmas after meeting on a Muslim dating website.

Rowaida El-Hassan, 33, found love with Munir Mohammed, 36, after the pair shared sickening ISIS videos.

Sudanese asylum seeker Mohammed was attracted to University College London graduate El-Hassan because she referred to having a Masters degree in pharmacy in her dating profile.

She wrote that she was "looking for a simple, very simple, honest and straightforward man who fears Allah", who she could "vibe with on a spiritual and intellectual level".

After meeting on SingleMuslim.com, their relationship stepped up in spring 2016 and they were in regular contact with each other on WhatsApp.

Mohammed, of Derby, had been radicalised by an ISIS commander on Facebook and planned to carry out a deadly terror attack by the time he set up a dating profile.

As their romance blossomed, El-Hassan used her expert knowledge of chemicals to help Mohammed gather the ingredients needed to make a bomb.

The pair were both found guilty of preparing terrorist acts between November 2015 and December 2016.

Jurors at the Old Bailey heard how Mohammed, who arrived in Britain in the back of a lorry, had pledged allegiance to ISIS and had expressed willingness to participate in "a new job in the UK".

Dutch intelligence agency stopped 4 terror attacks in the Netherlands

The Algemene Inlichtingen en Veiligheidsdienst (AIVD), the Dutch intelligence agency, has prevented 4 terrorist attacks from taking place since 2011. That is according to AIVD's chief Rob Bertholee, who commented it in an interview at the TV program College Tour.

Bertholee regarded these 4 threats as "specific, severe cases", and he mentioned one of them, the arrest of Jaouad A. in Rotterdam. A. was caught in possession of an automatic weapon  and dangerous "firework explosives", enough to explode a car. Due to his jihadist believes and the illegal possession Jaouad A. was sentenced last year to 4 years of detention.

During the interview the AIVD's chief alleged that in the last years his team investigated on hundreds terrorist threats. He added that "the risk of an attack is actually present", and that if no attacks have taken place so far, it's thanks to the police, the justice and "pure luck".

Bertholee also discussed cyber security, calling the Netherlands naive on the matter. On his opinion "security is more important than privacy", and he gave the Dutch cyber security a 6 out of 10, "which is enough, but it could easily become a 5".

Bertholee supports the new intelligence- and security-services law (called "sleepwet" by its opponents), which would allow these services to obtain a great deal of data from the internet traffic and strengthen the cyber security at the same time. The AIVD has concrete evidence that countries like China, Russia and Iran intentionally tried to hack Dutch governmental systems, according to him.

The agency works with the intelligence services from other countries, but with the U.S. Bertholee told that they are "extra careful with the information they share", due to the unpredictability of Trump's presidency.
