BREAKING: Barcelona's Sagrada Familia on lockdown - police carry out anti-terror operation

The Sagrada Familia, a large and unfinished Roman Catholic church designed by renowned architect Anton Guadi, was shut off following reports of a supicious package found in a van parked close to the attraction.

Spanish media is reporting that two people have been arrested in connection with the operation.

Catalan's Mossos police officers stormed into the temple at about 8.15pm local time and cleared everybody out and away from the area.

Businesses and nearby metro stations have also been evacuated.

Several roads have also been closed.

Mossos police tweeted: "We are making checks around the Sagrada Familia as part of an anti-terror operation and have cordoned off the area.

"Follow the instructions of police."

Twitter user @davealenn was in the metro station next to the Sagrada Familia when he and his fellow passengers were moved out by police.

"We were evicted from the Sagrada Familia metro station and the police cordoned off the entire area," he tweeted.

The counter-terror operation comes less than a month after Barcelona was hit by a terror attack that killed 13 people and injured 130 others.

The Sagrada Familia, one of Barcelona's most popular tourist attractions, was the intended target of the terrorists who carried out last month's atrocity in the city's famous Ramblas and the seaside resort of Cambrils.

BREAKING NEWS: A record 379 terror arrests were made in Britain in just one year with dozens coming after the London and Manchester attacks

British police made a record 379 arrests for terrorism-related offences last year, official figures show.

The number of arrests, the most in a year since data collection began in 2001, mean suspects were being detained at a rate of more than one a day.

The UK has suffered a torrid year of terror attacks, with five killed in the Westminster Bridge attack, 22 dying in the Manchester Arena bombing and eight killed in the London Bridge atrocity.

The figures show the number of arrests up to June this year, including the 12 arrests made in connection with Westminster, the 23 after Manchester and the 21 arrests after London Bridge.

It also includes the one arrest made after the car attack made near Finsbury Park Mosque in late June.

They also include many arrests related to British jihadis attempting to travel to or returning from fighting for ISIS in the Middle East, or for spreading the terror group's propaganda.

The figure was up nearly 70% on the previous 12 months, in which 226 arrests were made.

Earlier this year, Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick revealed her officers had thwarted a number of plots, some of them were 'very close to attacks, very close', some of them just 'minutes away'.

Speaking in July, Ms Dick told LBC radio: 'We have thwarted a very large number of plots over the last few years.

'Just in the last few weeks, five, and overall its well into the teens in the last couple years, where we know people were intent on attack and that's been stopped.'

She later clarified that five attacks had been stopped in the last 'three to four months'.

Five people, including police officer Keith Palmer, died in March after extremist Khalid Massood drove a car along the pavements of Westminster Bridge, before running into the grounds of Parliament with a knife.

In May, suicide bomber Salman Abedi detonated a home-made device in a lobby of a Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, slaughtering 22 people.

Eight people were murdered by three jihadis who drove a van across London Bridge before attacking people with knives in Borough Market in June.

Later that month, a man from south Wales drove a van into a crowd near Finsbury Park Mosque, killing one.

Two Female Terrorism Suspects Convicted in Southern Russia

Two women suspected of plotting a terrorist attack in southern Russia's Rostov region have been sentenced to nine and fifteen years behind bars, the Interfax news agency reported Monday.

The court convicted a third suspect in a related case to three years in prison in July. Viktoria Semyonova pleaded guilty to charges of planning a terrorist attack, saying "I was influenced by other people who convinced me of the need to fight the infidels."

On Monday, a military court in Rostov court sentenced Tatyana Karpenko to 14 and a half years and Natalya Grishina to nine years, according to Interfax.

The three women were detained in January 2016 for planning to carry out an attack at a Rostov-on-Don mall. Karpenko and Grishina were suspected of persuading Semyonova to commit the attack.

A man was detained alongside the three convicted women with 800 grams of explosive material discovered at their residence.

Mikäli tekijät olisivat Suomessa ja suunnittelisivat räjähdeiskua kauppakeskukseen tai homobaariin, ja jos jostain syystä (ulkomailta televalvonnonasta tulisi vihje ottaa kiinni) heistä saataisiin varoitus. Kuinka todennäköistä olisi että mm Helsingin poliisin ylikomisariot yksinkertaisesti jättäisivät varoituksen huomiotta. Ja vaikka otettaisiin kiinni, niin esitutkinnan jälkeen heidät päästettäisiin vapaaksi jos olisivat opiskelijoita.

Käytännössä nuoren terroristinaisen tuomitseminen ei Suomessa onnistuisi. Tai ainakaan sitä ei voi pitää kovinkaan todennäköisenä.

Vastaavasti jos tuollainen misu vetää pommiliivin päälleen ja lähtee kauppakeskukseen tappamaan ihmisiä uskontopoliittisen hurmoksen vallassa, kuinka monella on kanttia esim ampua moinen? Ja huom pitää osua ekalla päähän ja varmistua ettei pommittajalla ole toista laukaisijaa mukana? Oikeiden terroristien torjunta on kovaa ja ammattilaisten työtä. Siinä ei sovi olla mm ämpäriyliopistossa huuhaata lukeneita ns terrorismin torjuja tutkijoita.

Ei pitäisi päästää enää länsimaihin tai edes Venäjälle vapaaksi. Suoraan vaan linnasta Syyriaan. Siellähän nuo viihtyisivät.

Käytännössä moisia ei saisi missään nimessä päästää normaalin vankipopulaation joukkoon vaan heidät pitäisi eristää yleisen turvallisuuden nimissä. Suomessa vankilamme ovat jo näiden pieniä korkeakouluja joissa opetellaan kuinka isketään seuraavalla kerralla tehokkaammin ja värvätään muita.

Voidaan sanoa että kaikki mikä voidaan tehdä väärin näiden terroririkollisten kohdalla tehdään väärin. Lopulta muuttuvat eräänlaiseksi ihmiskuljetusmassaksi joka kuitenkin tulee tekemään itsetuhoisen terroritekonsa osana uskontopoliittista innostustaan. Psykologian ja teologian keinoja ja resursseja itsetuhokäytöksen torjuntaan ei ole tai jis on, ne eivät koskaan riitä.

Suomen kansalaista syytetään Tanskassa terroristijärjestöön liittymisestä ja sotilaallisesta harjoittelusta järjestössä.

Miehen epäillään liittyneen Syyriassa äärijärjestö Isisin riveihin. 24-vuotias mies on ollut pidätettynä tammikuusta lähtien. Rikoksista voidaan tuomita Tanskassa vähintään neljän vuoden vankeusrangaistukseen.

A Brussels police officer has been arrested after authorities caught him handing over information to a terror cell who were under criminal investigation.

Officer Momo E.S., who comes from a North African background, had been under investigation by authorities for weeks before his arrest. Police say that he used the social messaging service WhatsApp to give the terror cell details on what was going on with the police investigation into their group's activities De Tijd reports.

The committee investigating Mr E.S. say that they are currently working on finding out just how many messages he sent to the terror cell and what specific information has passed on to them.

It is said that he would have had access to information indicating when potential raids on suspects would have occurred and may have passed on the information to allow the suspects to evade capture.

The officer will be charged for violation of professional secrecy and corruption but so far prosecutors have not brought up any terrorism-related charges.

The case is not the first time Islamist sympathisers have been caught working for state authorities in European countries and using their position to help fellow Islamists.

In Germany last year an officer in the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) was placed under arrest after other agents caught him trying to recruit Islamists and had plotted to bomb the national headquarters of the agency in Cologne.

The man had initially been hired earlier in the year to observe the rapidly growing radical Islamist scene but later said he had joined the agency in order to infiltrate it.

Security services are not the only places to have been infiltrated by jihadists and their sympathisers. Shortly after the Brussels airport terror attack last year it was reported that as many as 50 Islamic State supporters worked at the airport as baggage handlers, cleaners and cafeteria staff.

Germany Indicts 5 Suspects in Islamic State Recruitment Ring

German prosecutors filed terrorism charges Thursday against a suspected representative of the Islamic State group in Germany and four fellow suspects who are accused of running a recruitment network.

The suspected ringleader — a 33-year-old Iraqi citizen identified as Ahmad Abdulaziz Abdullah A., who goes by the alias Abu Walaa — was indicted on charges of membership in a terrorist organization, terror financing and public incitement to commit crimes, federal prosecutors said.

German 'Islamic State Leader' on Trial for Recruiting Jihadists

Notorious hate preacher Abu Walaa, described as the Islamic State group's de facto leader in Germany, goes on trial Tuesday accused of radicalizing young men and running a jihadist terror network linked to the Berlin Christmas market attacker.

Nicknamed "the faceless preacher" for showing his back to the camera in propaganda videos, the 33-year-old Iraqi was arrested last November on suspicion of being the "central figure" in an IS recruitment ring.

Walaa — named by the authorities as Ahmad Abdulaziz Abdullah A. — will appear before a court in the northern German city of Celle alongside four co-defendants accused of supporting IS.

The five created a "pan-regional Salafist-jihadist network" in which Walaa "took on the leading role as the representative of the so-called Islamic State in Germany," prosecutors said in their indictment. "The goal of the network was to send people to IS in Syria or Iraq."

The closely-watched terror trial will take place under heavy security and is expected to run until early 2018.

"For a long time little has been known about the backroom men, those who seduce and incite to jihad," Der Spiegel news weekly wrote.

"The proceedings against Abu Walaa promise to give deep insights into these mechanisms, which makes this one of the most interesting Islamist trials in recent years."

If found guilty, the accused face up to 10 years in prison, according to DPA news agency.

'Number one'

A shadowy figure who long evaded capture, Walaa has been linked to some of Germany's most high profile jihadist attacks since arriving in the country in 2001.

After setting up his base in Hildesheim, a northern town seen as a hotbed of Islamic radicalism, he made a name for himself delivering extremist sermons at the notorious DIK mosque, which has since been shut down.

Walaa, who has two wives and several children, also gave seminars across the country calling for jihad. He notably spoke at a Berlin mosque frequented by Anis Amri, who drove a truck through a crowded Christmas market last December, killing 12 people.

German intelligence services took pictures of Amri in Hildesheim some 10 months earlier, prompting speculation he had ties to the network. Amri was shot dead by police in Italy days after his rampage.

Walaa's four accomplices — a Turkish national, a German, a German-Serbian and a Cameroonian, aged between 27 and 51 — are likewise accused of indoctrinating young men with jihadist ideology.

An Islamist terrorist bomb plot was foiled in Paris on Saturday after an improvised explosive device was found near Paris Saint-Germain football club.

The device, consisting of four gas cylinders covered in petrol, were found in the upmarket 16th arrondissement near the Parc des Princes stadium, just hours before PSG were playing a league game.

Five men have been arrested, including a known Islamist extremist who was meant to be under surveillance.

Islamic State has targeted Paris stadiums in the past, including in November 2015 when three suicide bombers hit the Stade de France before a friendly between France and Germany.

Birmingham-Based Imam Can Be Extradited to Face Islamic State Charges

A Birmingham-based imam accused of making recruitment videos for the Islamic State terror group can be extradited, a court has ruled.

Spanish authorities believe Tarik Chadlioui, 43, made the propaganda films encouraging people to fight in Syria during visits there in 2014 and 2015.

The Moroccan-born Belgian national is charged with collaborating with or membership of an armed group, which carries a prison sentence of up to 20 years if he is convicted.

According to the BBC, lawyers for Mr. Chadlioui argued that his extradition would breach his human right to a family life as he has eight children in Birmingham, UK.

They said he is the sole breadwinner for the family, who came from Belgium in 2015 to the Sparkhill area – a popular designation for Islamists fleeing European crackdowns on Islamic face veils.

Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot rejected the claim, saying Mr. Chadlioui's family were eligible for benefits and could seek help from his mosque.

"At worst, and I accept it might be a hardship, the oldest two children could go out and get jobs – they are 17 and 18 after all," she said.

Mr. Chadlioui was one of six people arrested across Europe in June, and Spanish authorities allege he made three pro-jihadi videos for extremist forces in Syria during two visits to Mallorca three years ago.

He is alleged to be the spiritual leader of the jihadist network that inspired Omar Mostefai, one of the Bataclan bombers who killed 86 people in Paris in November 2015.

He has also previously been linked with Anjem Choudary, the infamous convicted British hate preacher.

At an earlier hearing, the preacher protested his innocence and insisted he was an anti-terror activist.

"He has uploaded thousands of videos to YouTube," barrister Malcolm Hawkes told the court. "This is what he does, he is an anti-terrorist preacher." Mr. Chadlioui has more than 17,000 subscribers on the video sharing platform.

French media is reporting that bottles of petrol were discovered under the Franco-Swiss cement company Lafarge truck and they were connected to an ignition device.

It was described as a 'crude detonator device' and was discovered in the 19th arrondissement – to the north west of the city, according to Le Figaro.

It was discovered early this morning by workers as they arrived for work. Sources say that they had tried to ignite it with a barbecue lighter, but it failed.

Police and prosecutors are at the scene, according to a source close to the investigation.

Bomb disposal experts rushed to the site and police cordoned off the area, situated in a working-class district.

Ranskan Pariisissa on löydetty "yksinkertaiseen" räjäyttimeen kytkettyjä bensa-astioita rekka-autoista. Bensa-astiat oli kiinnitetty rekkoihin, ja ne löydettiin torstaina Pariisin koillisosan 19. kaupunginosasta.
Paikalle kiidätettiin pommiasiantuntijoita, jotka purkivat rekkojen pohjiin tehdyt räjähdeviritykset. Rekat kuuluvat ranskalais-sveitsiläiselle sementtiyritykselle LafargeHolcimille.

Uutistoimisto AFP:n mukaan sementtiyrityksen työntekijät havaitsivat rekkoihin kytketyt bensa-astiat tullessaan töihin torstaiaamuna.

Tapauksen vuoksi on pidätetty kuusi ihmistä. Heistä kaksi oli ollut poliisin tarkkailulistalla epäiltyinä yhteyksistä ääri-islamismiin.

Volgens het parket had A.B. al verschillende correctionele veroordelingen opgelopen, onder meer voor drugsfeiten.

Zahid Hussain, 29, sentenced to minimum of 15 years after scouting target and attempting to assemble explosives

An Islamic State supporter who planned to blow up railway lines using a bomb built with Christmas tree lights has been jailed for at least 15 years.

Zahid Hussain, 29, a former nightclub doorman, was caught on CCTV climbing into a storm drain under the mainline out of Birmingham to London as he researched possible targets.

His pressure cooker bomb, packed with 1.6kg (3.5lb) of shrapnel, would have caused a "significant explosion" and multiple fatalities had it been viable, a judge said on Monday.

Sentencing Hussain to life imprisonment with a minimum of 15 years, Mr Justice Sweeney said: "You are a dangerous offender and in the view of the level of the danger that you pose and the impossibility of predicting when it will come to an end, this is an appropriate case in which to impose a sentence of life imprisonment."

Jurors at Birmingham crown court heard that Hussain became radicalised while viewing hundreds of Isis images and videos of the war in Syria.

He used a bedroom in his parents' home as his "base of operations and improvised laboratory" where he researched and attempted to assemble explosives, and he carried out reconnaissance of woods near the house in Alum Rock, Birmingham.

In the days before his arrest, Hussain made repeated visits to a section of the high-speed rail line that links London to Birmingham, which prosecutors said was to research a possible target.

He was arrested on 9 August 2015 after reports of a man "patrolling" the streets carrying a hammer and crowbar near his parents' house.

When police searched the property they found books on guerrilla warfare, including one that talked of mounting attacks on railways, in which a page on how to derail a train had been marked.

Officers also found handwritten recipes for explosives and a hand-drawn map showing a drainage chamber.

Hussain had attempted to create a remote-control detonator with a wireless doorbell, and successfully made four igniters from fairy lights for his device.
