France's top human rights official has sparked fury by calling for the return of camps for UK-bound migrants.
Jacques Toubon, the so-called Rights Defender, said up to 600 asylum seekers were being 'hounded night and day' while sleeping in 'undergrowth in the town'.
With charity hand-outs banned, he said they were 'in a state of physical and mental exhaustion' and suggested France reinstate sprawling camps akin to the Calais Jungle which was torn down in October.
His controversial remarks come as more than 100 riot police were drafted into the port city of Calais to stop UK-bound migrants setting up burning roadblocks to stop lorries so they could board them.
But Mr Toubon said migrants' rights were being infringed 'with exceptional and unprecedented seriousness' and that the 'setting up of somewhere' where they can sleep should now be a priority.

Scabies Cases Drastically Rising Amongst Migrants on Paris Streets

NGOs working with migrants on the streets of Paris have warned that cases of scabies are on the rise, claiming there are well over a hundred cases so far.

The scabies skin infection is becoming more and more common amongst migrants living on the streets of the French capital. The infection, which is caused by mites and causes scabs and itching on the skin, has been seen 157 times by the reception centre at Porte De Le Chapelle since November 2016, L'Express reports.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) have also confirmed seeing 164 scabies infection cases since the end of December. They blame the squalid conditions in which the migrants live for the rapid spread of the infection.

The reception centre at Porte De Le Chapelle has tried to counter the trend by offering medical services to migrants which include showers, clean clothing, and new bedding, but the infection rate continues to rise.

The problem, according to pro-migrant groups, is that migrants wear the same clothing and move around a lot making treatment only partially effective. They say the only way to get rid of the problem entirely would be to permanently house migrants.

Whilst scabies itself is not life threatening, many health practitioners are concerned that left unchecked the infections could lead to complications including "superinfections" that are resistant to antibiotic treatment.

Last month, Breitbart London visited the Porte De Le Chapelle migrant camp and spoke to several migrants. Very few were from Syria or other parts of the Middle East, with most being from Africa and saying that they "blamed Europe" for their situation.

Several weeks later, the migrant camp was cleared by police, though many have since returned to the area.

Diseases have been rife in makeshift migrant camps along the various migrant routes. In Germany, doctors have found a resurgence in diseases like tuberculosis amongst migrants and are under strain dealing with infections and diseases that are common in the Middle East but relatively rare in Europe.

In Austria last year, a deadly bacterial infection was found amongst the migrants staying in a former luxury hotel that was converted into a migrant centre. The infection, spread by lice, can be fatal in 30-70 per cent of cases and forced the hotel to be placed under quarantine until the cases were resolved.

The Freight Transport Association FTA is calling on the French government to take urgent action after a van driver was killed when migrants barricaded the A16 near Calais early this morning.

The van hit stationary trucks that had been forced to stop at a roadblock of trees and rubble and burst into flames, killing the driver instantly. FTA EU Affairs Manager Chris Yarsley said the association had been warning of such a tragedy for years and the French authorities must do more to keep drivers safe.

"This has brought the issue of migrants targeting drivers in Calais to the fore once again. FTA warned two years ago that their actions would lead to a death and it is now imperative that the French government takes action to control the situation and ensure the safety of drivers travelling to and from the port.

"Major roads around Calais must be effectively policed to prevent migrants creating these dangerous road blocks. Authorities must do more to detain migrants and move them away from the area. The situation for our members improved after the Jungle camp was cleared at the end of last year but we have had reports that problems are returning to the area. Indeed, several rest stops have been closed to truck drivers because of issues with migrants," he said.

In March this year FTA called on the French authorities to provide more secure parking for HGVs after motorway operator Sanef announced that one rest area on the A16 and three on the A26 would stay shut until the end of June. Truck driver Tony Henderson from FTA member Blair Transport in Belfast revealed his firm had introduced a 50-mile 'no stopping' zone around Calais because of the increased risk.

Mr Yarsley said: "Driver safety is paramount and the French government needs to step up patrols on the major routes and move on migrants who are camped at the side of the road. This tragic incident demonstrates the risks to drivers and other road users, including day trippers and tourists. This death was wholly preventable and we must ensure that no-one else dies as a result of the dangerous actions of migrants on the roads."

Local estimates say around 700 migrants have returned to the Calais area since the camp was dismantled and FTA continues to encourage its members to sign up to the Border Force civil penalty accreditation scheme which offers information and advice about preventing migrant incursions.

Poland urges France to protect drivers as four charged over Calais death

Poland on Wednesday urged France to guarantee security for its lorry drivers after A Polish man died in a crash caused by roadblock erected by migrants near the northern French port of Calais. Four migrants have been charged with manslaughter in relation to the death.

Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Blaszczak confirmed that the van driver, who died in the crash Tuesday, was Polish and requested French counterpart Gérard Collomb "take action to guarantee the security of Polish lorry drivers in the Calais region".

The driver, who has been named as Miroslav I, died after slamming into a truck stopped by a log roadblock which migrants had erected across the motorway at Guemps, on Calais's eastern outskirts, police said.

Before the Calais "Jungle" camp was closed last October, migrants desperate to reach Britain as stowaways on trucks frequently set up makeshift roadblocks, usually at night, to slow cross-Channel traffic and they have started to do so again recently..

'Deep concern' in Poland

Blaszczak told Collomb in a letter the incident had caused "deep concern" in Poland. Polish drivers account for a quarter of those plying long-distance European routes.

"It is unacceptable that illegal acts lead to a situation where innocent people die," added Blaszczak, who offered Polish help to "improve security in the Calais region."

Tuesday's death was the first for a driver since the migrant crisis hit France's Channel ports in 2014, although there have been numerous fatalities among migrants seeking to go to Britain by train and truck.

Four charged with manslaughter

Four migrants - two Afghan adults and two Eritrean minors - were charged with manslaughter, impeding traffic and endangering lives and detained on Wednesday night.

They reject the charges.

They were among nine migrants detained after being found in the back of a lorry at the scene.

The five others - all minors, four Eritreans and one Ethiopian - have been placed in confinement.

The Jungle was home to up to 10,000 at its height. Between 400 and 600 migrants are today thought to be living in the Calais area in precarious conditions in the hope of reaching Britain.

Peter, 55, and Jill Stubbs, 57, were reportedly targeted by a dozen robbers as they were stuck in traffic en route home from a holiday in the south of France, the Sun reports.

They were briefly unable to escape as their black BMW was surrounded by three other vehicles and motorbikes held up the traffic.

Two men on foot allegedly began circling them with one carrying a gun or knife approached the driver's side.

The second then used a brick to smash the passenger window before leaning in and grabbing Jill's bag.

Jill, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was left covered in glass after the robbers smashed the front window.

The couple from Cornwall managed to escape by driving down a side road near Saint-Denis on Saturday night.

Peter, a father-of-five, said: "It all happened so quickly. We are lucky because it could have been much worse. I thought they might smash in all the windows and take the car or hurt us.

"I still can't believe the police wouldn't help us and nobody came to our aid."

Calais border officials explained to the shock-ridden couple why they were targeted amidst a cue of cars in traffic.

The officials reportedly said they were targeted for their number plate rather than their possessions which included a handbag containing passports, £400 and the equivalent of £300 in Euros.

Peter added: "We managed to get back to the Euro tunnel but my wife was covered in glass.

A French charity worker who helped her Iranian refugee boyfriend enter Britain illegally has avoided punishment by arguing that she acted "out of love."

During the trial, public prosecutor Camille Gourdin requested a one-year suspended prison sentence for Huret, arguing that she had endangered the lives of Mokhtar and the two other Iranian men she took across the Channel.

"Solidarity is laudable but not at any price and not in any conditions," Gourdin said.

Since crossing the Channel, Mokhtar has been granted asylum in the UK, and is now living in Sheffield where Béatrice Huret visits him regularly.

Truckers Terrorised by Calais Migrants Hit with Huge Fines When Vehicles Are Boarded

Long-haul drivers being terrorised by migrants seeking illegal passage to Britain are being hit by 10 fines a day for failing to thwart stowaways.

3,522 penalties totalling £7.8 million were handed out in 2016/17, an increase of 12 per cent on the previous year, according to a report in The Sun newspaper.

Drivers complain of "facing a gauntlet of intimidation and fear" en route to Britain, as migrants armed with baseball bats, iron bars, and even guns attempt to storm their vehicles from their bases in and around Calais.

The violence deployed is frequently extreme, with one driver narrowly escaping death in when a sharpened stake was hurled through his windshield in November 2015, and another actually being killed when his vehicle collided with a migrant roadblock and burst into flames earlier this month.

Many drivers are now "too scared" to inspect their vehicles, according to Road Hauliers Association (RHA) spokesman Rod McKenzie: "The Calais run is now a stressful, dangerous and sometimes downright terrifying experience for UK-bound lorry drivers."

"We've got gangs of highly organised migrants and people smugglers setting up roadblocks to slow them down and stowaway on board ... drivers just want to get away as quickly as possible. Many fear for their lives and many are met with threats of actual violence," he said.

Yet failing to check vehicles can see hauliers hit with fines of up to £2,000 per stowaway – a potentially crippling financial penalty.

In an official statement on the fines, RHA chief executive Richard Burnett said the situation had "escalated to the point where the frustration on the part of migrants and the ever increasing number of violent attacks has reached the stage where the drivers themselves are, in effect, having to police their own vehicles to establish if a migrant incursion has occurred".

Burnett said this "cannot be right", and that The Clandestine Civil Penalty scheme, designed in 1999 to penalise "lax and careless" drivers, was clearly out of date.

"We now regularly hear of hauliers who are throwing in the towel. They just want to do their job – not face regular acts of intimidation or violence. And who can blame them?" he asked. "Every day thousands of UK-bound hauliers are suffering because of the migrant mayhem at Calais."

The RHA has called for on the French government to deploy soldiers to the area, so they can be protected whilst they try to carry out their jobs.

It was Bajjar, the Mail can reveal, who on June 14 broke into the Care4Calais warehouse and who, in an apparent act of revenge directed at Mrs Moseley, poured petrol around the building, intent on setting it ablaze. His spite towards his ex-lover apparently ran deep. Before the failed attack, he texted a friend with a chilling message which was shown to the Mail: 'I will just end up killing her and taking her life easy. I'm really ready to do it because I love her more than anything in the world.'

As woods in northern France once again house hundreds of people, many report police aggression and sparse supplies

The woods around Calais and Dunkirk have once again become home to more than 1,000 refugees and migrants living in dire conditions without access to toilets, running water, showers or shelter.

Police regularly confiscate sleeping bags, bedding and possessions, and refugees complain that CS spray is often used during early morning raids on people sleeping. Reports of police harassment of refugees have risen as officials from both towns attempt, without success, to stop refugees from settling in the area.

But some kind of new camp now looks inevitable in Calais after a court ruled that the city government must provide showers and water supplies for the rapidly rising population of asylum seekers, who are mostly teenagers from Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Eritrea. Many of them are travelling alone, some as young as 12.

The water supplies were due to be installed by Friday, although the local administration would provide no details of how many were to be installed or where.

Because Calais police remove tents immediately, hundreds of refugees are sleeping in the open on wasteland behind an industrial zone near the port. Some camp on a heap of asphalt, others in the woods, where the area is littered with abandoned clothes and large quantities of human excrement. Even in August, the weather in northern France is stormy and cold. Someone has written "Refugees Welcome" on a nearby wall, but it does not feel a welcoming place.

Ismail Roble, a biology teacher from Ethiopia, from the Oromo minority group, has been in Calais for eight months and is hoping to join family in the UK. He said police had taken his bedding again early that morning. "I can't count how many times it has happened. They spray your eyes when you are asleep," he said as he queued for food. "It's very stressful living in these forests. We have no shelter, no hygiene, no sanitation, no water. It's very cold at night. The French have given us nothing."

In Dunkirk, refugees complain of a much more aggressive approach by local police, who arrive most weeks urging people sleeping in the woods to move on and destroying tents.

Amal Muhammed, an Iraqi woman, is travelling with her Iranian husband, Sahid Rebaz, their two children, Deia, 10, and Yousuf, three, and her severely disabled younger brother, Sardam Muhammed, 22, who is unable walk or speak. She said police had slashed their tent while they were sheltering in a clearing in the woods on Monday. She showed cuts in the fabric of the tent, which they have now abandoned.

Sarbast Amin, from Iraq, spent more than 10 years living in St Ives, working for a picture framing company. But this year his wife, Viyan Sadeeq Abdullah, was sent to Yarl's Wood immigration detention centre and then deported to Italy after her asylum claim was rejected. He is also staying in the woods, hoping to find a way to return with his wife to the country they consider home. He described conditions as "very hard".

Three police officers injured in clash with migrants near Calais

Police fired tear gas and three officers were injured on Saturday in clashes with migrants near the French port of Calais who took advantage of a traffic jam to sneak onto trucks, authorities said.

Calais is a magnet for people aiming to reach Britain, a short distance across the Channel.

"Our British colleagues had opened only nine out of 14 lanes this weekend though we expected 9,000 vehicles in the Eurotunnel and 7,500 at the port," local deputy police chief Jean-Philippe Vennin told AFP.

He said the lane shortages considerably slowed down traffic on the main A16 motorway and at about 1430 GMT (4:30 pm), around 50 migrants "took advantage of the bottleneck to board a few trucks".

An AFP correspondent on the scene said there were about 60 migrants waiting near the motorway.

Police engaged "in a game of cat and mouse" and used tear gas to disperse the migrants, said Vennin.

Three officers were injured in the clashes, a union source said, but gave no information on whether any migrants suffered injuries.

Migrants who successfully climbed onto a truck were then chased away by the driver after being alerted by nearby motorists, the source added.

The A16 motorway is the principal artery for freight and passengers heading for Britain either via the Channel Tunnel or the Calais port.

French authorities shut down the notorious "Jungle" camp there last October, which at its height was home to some 10,000 people living in dire conditions.

Despite the camp's closure, the French town remains a springboard for migrants trying to reach Britain by stowing away on lorries heading into the Channel Tunnel.

Fighting and attempts to break into trucks heading for Britain are regular problems for the police there.
