French Interior Minister Bruno Le Roux, says the camp, will be closed due to overcrowding.

It is located just 50 miles from Dover in the northern French port of Dunkirk.

But, much like the infamous camp in Calais, it will be broken apart in a bid to break up large groups of migrants.

Mr Le Roux warned the camp was reaching critical mass.
He said: "The question is no longer today about merely restoring public order.

"It is about the progressive dismantling of the camp, which must begin as soon as possible.We cannot let things go on like this."

However, the local mayor vehemently disagreed.

Green mayor Damien Carème said: "This camp is more necessary than ever as if there is one today, it's because the humanitarian response wasn't sufficient.

The Interior Minister said that he was worried about the behaviour of some of the men stuck in the camp.

There have been reports of violence, rape and sexual assault.

Police were called after two people were shot and two stabbed.

On Tuesday, riot police clashed with around 200 migrants who were not able to enter the camp and had set fire to a barricade.

It has presented a huge headache for France, as it is growing increasingly desperate to stop the recent influx of migrants, as about 200 arrive in Paris each week from Italy.

Many made the treacherous journey after arriving in small boats and have no place to go.

A third summer of chaos threatens outside Calais

IF YOU thought that the migrant crisis on the other side of the Channel was easing, then think again.

Today we report from France where masked gangs are regularly breaking in to trucks and lorries heading for the UK, which have stopped at a motorway service station near Dunkirk and Calais.

The long overdue destruction of the Calais "Jungle" camp last year was hailed as a means of ending the migrant crisis but this newspaper's investigation makes it clear that the hordes who are intent on coming to Britain have dispersed to an extent but have not really gone away.

The French authorities have not made sufficient efforts to end the epidemic of human trafficking which is leading to violence on a daily basis.

The desperation of the migrants who are intent on coming to Britain by any means is matched by the unscrupulousness and viciousness of the gangs of people smugglers.

Wearing hoods they lurk at the side of the road waiting for trucks to leave the motorway.

This will be the third summer plagued by chaos on the roads outside Calais.

Migrants are returning to the areas in ever increasing numbers. While France has a part to play Britain must also do more to ensure that weak borders are not an invitation to desperate migrants and wicked traffickers.

Only if the borders are strong will they be deterred.

Truck drivers warned of summer of 'migrant mayhem' ahead at Calais

Truck drivers going through the Port of Calais this summer could face attack and the risk of people trying to board their lorry as they try to make it into the UK, the chief executive of the Road Haulage Association (RHA) has warned.

Richard Burnett made this warning after a fact-finding trip to Calais on 23-24 March with journalists from a national newspaper, where he witnessed numerous attempts by migrants to enter lorries that were bound for the UK. He said he fears that drivers could end up hurt – or worse – in an attack.

"Within an hour of arriving at the Port we were witnessing horrifying attacks on drivers – their only crime being to park up for a quick comfort stop on the last leg towards the Port," Burnett said. "We watched one driver leave his cab and within seconds, a gang of migrants attempted to enter his truck. They succeeded and it was only because one of our team alerted the driver upon his return that they were removed. Despite this, many more migrants appeared; all intent on trying their luck. We were also attacked because we were capturing the event as it unfolded on camera and on our iPhones. It was clear that traffickers were leading the attacks. Each time a truck appeared, so did migrants. Only because we alerted the drivers did they fail in their attempts to get on board.

"I am really worried for the lives of these drivers – on this occasion he got away – others will not be so lucky.

Burnett added that this attack happened in broad daylight, little more than 40 miles from the Port. "It's obvious that it was not an isolated incident. Last October we warned that dismantling the 'Jungle' would not make the problem disappear. It's very clear that our worries are already becoming a reality and as the weather improves migrants are returning in ever increasing numbers; all with a single goal – to reach the UK by whatever means possible.

"We cannot see a repeat of the past two summers. Last year we heard of many drivers that were refusing to make the Dover/Calais crossing because of the risks involved and let's face it, who can blame them? But there's now a real danger that it won't just be the lives of innocent hauliers that are being put at risk, the effect on the UK haulage industry in particular and the economy on both sides of the Channel will become untenable. And with Brexit just around the corner, that's the last thing that anyone needs."

Burnett added that the RHA is calling for urgent meetings with the French authorities ahead of the elections in that country in April and May to establish that the Le Touquet agreement will remain in place. "If the border moves to this side of the Channel it will quite simply create an open door for thousands of illegal migrants," he concluded.

Pohjois-Irlannissa Lisburnissa on suuri virvoitusjuomapullottamo, jossa muun muassa Coca-Colaa laitetaan tölkkeihin.

Tölkit tuodaan muualta avonaisina, tehtaalla ne täytetään porejuomalla ja suljetaan.

Muutama päivä sitten yövuorossa koneet menivät jumiin. Työntekijät löysivät tyhjistä tölkeistä ihmisen ulostetta.

Arvelujen mukaan tölkkejä kuljettaneen rekan mukana oli matkustanut laittomasti maahan pyrkiviä ihmisiä. Pitkän rekkamatkan aikana he olivat käyttäneet tyhjiä tölkkejä vessoina, koska oikeita vessoja ei ollut tarjolla.

Ja ainakin yksi turvis on saanut turvapaikan Britanniasta käveltyään 31-kilometrisen tunnelin läpi Britanniaan.

Refugees start to gather in Calais again, months after camp was closed

Aid groups say several hundred people, half of them unaccompanied children, have returned to area around French port

The number of refugees in and around Calais is beginning to build up again, five months after the "Jungle" camp was demolished. Aid groups report several hundred new arrivals in recent weeks, around half of them unaccompanied minors.

"Eritreans and Sudanese are everywhere along the seafront with no welcome centre," said Amin Trouvé-Baghdouche of Doctors of the World. "They are wandering about, abandoned by the state. Half of them are teenagers of about 15-17 years old, without their families."

Aid workers say groups of refugees have rebuilt small camps in the woods. "Afghans have rebuilt well-hidden areas where they sleep," said one humanitarian worker, adding that Africans, most of them very young, slept for a few hours hidden in thickets before being dislodged by the police, and took refuge during the day in the premises of the Secours Catholique, the only place where they can go between 9am and 5pm.

Aid groups put the total number of refugees at between 400 and 500. Their reappearance raises questions over French efforts to deal effectively with the problem of refugees and migrants amassing Calais, many with a view to trying to cross into Britain on lorries. As many as 10,000 people lived in the camp before it was dismantled in November.

"It feels like we have gone back three years to April 2014 when there were 300 or 400 migrants in Calais," said Gilles Debove, a local police officer. "We have resumed patrols, handing out food, questioning and finding shelter for minors, but it doesn't do any good."

He says children can still be found all along the port ring road at 2am, and the job is a bit like "emptying the barrel of the Danaides".

Jean-Marc Puissesseau, chief executive of the port authority, agreed that it felt like the clocks had been turned back a couple of years, and said the authorities needed to keep a close eye on the situation to stop it escalating. The new regional leader, Fabien Sudry, has vowed that there should be "no permanent sites, no squats, no reconstitution of the Jungle" and noted that a unique 500-strong force is policing the area.

The vast Calais migrant camp was dismantled last November, and thousands of people were moved to processing centres across France. Local authorities in Calais have insisted they will not allow a new camp to re-emerge. At one point the mayor, Natacha Bouchart, even tried to ban food distribution, but a regional court struck down the measure.

"It's really something to be reduced to celebrating because the authorities have allowed you to feed kids who live outside," said Vincent Coninck, of the Secours Catholique humanitarian aid group. "We are going back to the time after Sangatte (a previous refugee camp which was shut in 2002) only with a bigger dose of police harassment."

"Opinion formers are becoming opinion followers and have capitulated to the Front National and no longer dare to set a lead," he said, adding that the whole culture of asylum had been dismantled at the same time as the "Jungle" camp.

France's rights ombudsman, Jacques Toubon, recently decried the fact that support for migrants had fallen to levels not seen in decades. He rebuked the authorities for "not just not providing enough resources for basic human dignity to be protected, but also forbidding civil society from making good these inadequacies".

Frédéric Van Gansbeke, president of the Calais trade federation, was scathing about the failure to adopt "the least bad solution" – the establishment of a proper camp in line with UN standards in the Calais region.

"The Calais people don't have the patience they had two years ago," he said, adding that feelings were running far higher than in the past. "None of the candidates in [this month's] presidential election is offering anything that stands up for the migration question."

Politics may indeed be playing a role in Calais. In 2015, the Front National won almost 50% of the vote here in regional elections. Its candidate, Marine Le Pen, is currently neck and neck with her centrist rival Emmanuel Macron to win the first round vote on 23 April.

Iranian Migrants Pulled from Sinking Boat in English Channel

French maritime authorities have rescued six Iranian migrants whose fishing boat was sinking in the English Channel as they sought to reach Britain.

The overnight rescue effort took more than two hours because extremely thick fog complicated efforts to find the boat, the CROSS maritime authority said in a statement Tuesday.

It said the migrants were found not far from the Calais coast, suffering from mild hypothermia, and handed over to border police.

Migrants fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa continue to converge on Calais in hopes of sneaking across to Britain, despite the closure of a vast migrant camp there last year.

The maritime authority warned that clandestine travel by boat is "extremely risky and dangerous" because of strong currents, cold water, fog and heavy traffic.

Ranskassa mittava tulipalo on vahingoittanut pakolaisleiriä, jossa eli noin 1 500 ihmistä. Palokunnan mukaan ainakin kymmenen ihmistä on loukkaantunut Grande-Synthen pakolaisleirin palossa. Pakolaisten asumukset paloivat maan tasalle.

Leirin asumukset ovat lähelle toisiaan pystytettyjä puisia mökkejä, joihin mahtuu kuhunkin neljä ihmistä. Liekit levisivät helposti puisesta mökistä toiseen.

Palon syttymissyy ei ole vielä tiedossa. Silminnäkijöiden mukaan paloa edelsi riita leirin asukkaiden välillä.
Leirillä on ollut aiemmin välivaltaisia yhteenottoja. Ranskalaisviranomaiset ilmoittivat maaliskuussa aikovansa purkaa leirin.

Riot police moved into the camp to break up the trouble that one migrant said pitted Afghans against Kurds.

Five people were injured in the fight among 100 to 150 migrants, leaving three of them in hospital with knife wounds, the prefecture said.

Officials linked the fight with the fire that broke out hours later but stressed that an investigation is needed to determine its cause.

Refugees on the Dunkirk camp fire: "All my documents burned in the flames"

This fire was a tragic but inevitable consequence of British and French policy failures.

On Monday night, a huge fire ripped through the Grand-Synthe refugee camp outside the northern French city of Dunkirk. The fire destroyed 80 per cent of the camp, including community spaces, kitchens, the women's and children's centres and the wooden shelters that housed more than 1,500 migrants. "There is nothing left but a heap of ashes," said Michel Lalande, prefect of France's Nord region, at the site.

Reports from the ground suggest that the fire began after a fight broke out between rival Afghan and Kurdish groups in the camp. The situation escalated after intervention from French riot police, which led to further clashes between security forces and residents and left at least 10 people injured. Fortunately, no one is reported to have died.

It is understood that the initial fight was a result of the terrible shortage of shelters for newer arrivals to the camp, which was set up in 2016 by Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). The camp's population swelled after the demolition of the Calais "jungle" camp 19 miles east of the site, which was estimated to have housed more than 10,000 refugees. The majority of the new arrivals were of Afghan descent, but the older population of the camp was predominantly Kurdish.

Annie Gavrilescu, regional manager for Help Refugees UK told me: "Shelter allocation in the camp was basically controlled by a criminal gang, rather than by the French authority AEFJI, which was mandated by the local government to manage the camp." Tensions between camp residents have been high for some time, evidenced by a number of smaller conflicts that have broken out in recent months.  AEFJI's decision to take down dozens of shelters in the previous weeks in an attempt to reduce the camp's population to 700 further escalated the situation.

Ahmed*, an unaccompanied 17 year-old from Afghanistan who had been living with friends in the camp told me via a call that after the fire broke out, they had nowhere to go: "Five or six hundred Afghan people, we walked on the train tracks towards Calais. We went to sleep in a forest between Calais and Dunkirk."

He reassured me that police were at the site and that food and water provisions were on their way. But he sounded distressed. "I am feeling very bad, this is a big problem," he said. "Still we have no food, no water, our situation is very bad. I don't know what we can do. It is cold outside at night, but now that Dunkirk is finished I don't know where I can sleep today."

For refugees caught up in the slow-moving French bureaucracy, the fire was particularly devastating. Basam*, a Kurdish-Iraqi refugee who had been evacuated by police to a nearby basketball court, said: "All of my documents were burnt in the fire. I had a paper to say I am refugee in France. Now again I have nothing.

"I am angry with the government [of] France. Before they make us sleep in chicken sheds, and now they say we have to sleep outside."

I also spoke to Isis Mera, volunteer who has been supporting women and children in the camp for over a year. She told me the harrowing story of Fatema* and her seven-month-old daughter, Iranian refugees who have been residents in the camp for the past five months. Fatema had recently miscarried her second pregnancy, and before the fire broke out yesterday she had been seen in the camp by a gynaecologist. The doctor had scheduled an operation for the following morning to remove the miscarried foetus, but events made it impossible for her to travel to the hospital. She was picked up in the morning by aid workers from outside a train, having tried to make her own way back to the burning camp to seek medical advice.

Approximately half of the camp's ex-residents are currently being housed in three gymnasiums close to the site, whilst many are still sleeping rough in the area surrounding the camp. The camp is also reportedly home to 120 unaccompanied minors, who have been disguising themselves as adults in order to be allowed to remain in camp. However, this means they have not been allowed to enter the gymnasium reserved for families, and their only option for now is to stay with older men or to go on the streets.

Once again, gaps in service provision are being filled by humanitarian organisations. The Dunkirk Legal Support Team, in conjunction with French charity L'Auberge des Migrants collected data from 120 unaccompanied minors last Sunday and are now liaising with relevant authorities to track them down and ensure their safety. It is thought that at least 50 of these minors have family in the UK, but not a single Home Office official has visited the site to meet or assess any of them.

Help Refugees UK has been lobbying the French authorities for help, not only with the hundreds of minors now living on the streets, but for those who lost everything in the fire, as well as addressing the root causes of the fire in the first place. It has also set up an emergency fund for those who would like to donate.

As with the fires that ravaged the Calais camp during its demolition in October 2016, this fire was a tragic but inevitable consequence of a failure of management on the part of the French Regional and State governments. Unless the French government finds a way to adequately provide for their refugee population, and the British government provides those with the legal right to asylum in the UK with a safe process to transfer there, it seems likely that even more refugees will be made homeless in the near future.

New 'Calais Jungle' May Open After Immigrants Burn Down Their Own Camp in Violent Clashes

France is facing the prospect of a new 'Calais Jungle' camp opening after the country's only official migrant settlement was burnt down in an arson attack during violent clashes between rival ethnic groups.

The blaze started during fighting between Kurdish and Afghan gangs at the camp in Grande-Synthe, near Dunkirk (pictured). About 20 people were injured and six suffered stab wounds.

An estimated 1,500 immigrants are now homeless. About 500 were put up in local gymnasiums following Monday night's fire while the rest slept rough.

Grande-Synthe was set up at significant public expense by the local council a year ago to house Kurds found sleeping in a nearby wood. After the closure of the Calais Jungle, they were joined by scores of Afghans, who are said to have thought the Kurds got preferential treatment. Almost all its residents, who lived in cabins, are trying to enter Britain.

British charities say there has been increasing violence lately, with women and children raped by traffickers, according to the Times of London.

There are now fears that some of the camp's itinerant occupants will try to set up a new incarnation of the notorious Calais Jungle, which was effectively a shantytown near one of France's largest ports. It was closed down by French authorities last October after its population had swelled to more than 7,000 inhabitants.

"There is nothing left but a heap of ashes," Michel Lalande, the interior ministry's regional representative, said, explaining that gangs of migrants had set fire to the cabins at Grande-Synthe. "It was an organised ransack. They set fire to the cabins one after the other. To do that you need people who are determined and organised."

Last week about 50 migrants from the camp blocked the A16 highway as they tried to stow away in trucks that were forced to stop. Roads were cleared after riot police clashed with the migrants, who threw stones at the officers.
