Hungary completes second fence to keep out migrants

Hungarian officials have argued that the new fence will secure both Hungary and the EU from additional migrants. International groups have criticized Hungary for its recent anti-migration measures.

Hungarian Interior Ministry State Secretary Karoly Kontrat hailed the newly completed fence as a way to defend not only Hungary but also the European Union (EU) from migrants attempting to enter the bloc, mostly from poor and conflict-ridden nations in the Middle East and Africa.

"Hungary is defending its border, and the Schengen zone at the same time," Kontrat said on Friday, referring to the area of free movement within Europe. The new "smart" fence lies along a section of the EU's external border and includes motion and heat sensors, night cameras and speakers blasting warnings in five languages.

Kontrat gave his remarks at a press conference in Roszke, a town that lies three kilometers (1.8 miles) away from the Serbian border and that had been a hotspot for conflict between police and refugees  during the height of the European migration crisis in 2015.

Before the first fence was built that year, more than 400,000 migrants and refugees traveled through Hungary on their way to other regions of Europe.

A symbolic border between Hungary and the EU?

While framing the new physical barrier as a benefit to the whole EU bloc, Kontrat simultaneously highlighted the EU's shortcomings in dealing with the migration crisis. He argued the bloc had failed to set up centers for asylum-seekers in Libya or to force boats carrying migrants across the Mediterranean Sea to turn back.

He also said the new 155-kilometer (96-mile) long fence was constructed in preparation for an expected increase in migrants attempting to reach western Europe later this year and for the possible breakdown of the EU-Turkey migration deal.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban remarked on state radio that the border protection system would "ensure Hungary's security for a long time."

Hungarian migration policy under fire

Orban is staunchly against migration, which he has referred to as "poison." His government's policy towards asylum seekers has garnered international criticism, including a national law passed this February that enables the automatic detention of all asylum-seekers while providing housing in camps of shipping containers.

The announcement of the second fence's competition came at a time of heightened tension between the bloc and the Hungarian nation due to disagreements over national law. On Wednesday in Brussels, Orban described his country's membership in the EU as "not questionable" but accused the bloc of failing to deal with its "mistakes."

Police detain suspects of smuggling Vietnamese to Germany

The Czech police have detained six people suspected of smuggling Vietnamese migrants from Serbia to Germany and they prosecute four Vietnamese and one Czech in this case, Jaroslav Ibehej, spokesman for the National Centre against Organised Crime, announced on its website on Saturday.

A court remanded the whole organised group in custody on Wednesday.

Detectives carried out the operation code named XALO on Tuesday.

"According to our conclusions, a group of persons, mainly Vietnamese, organised the transports via Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The illegal migrants were supposed to use valid documents of their compatriots who had gained residence permits in the territory on the Czech Republic during the transfers," Ibehej said.

Detectives, from the National Centre against Organised Crime, accused the six suspects of organising and enabling illegal state border crossing.

They face up to eight years in prison if convicted.

How Hungary Became a Haven for the Alt-Right

The increasingly illiberal European country offers shelter to a growing number of international nationalists.

In February 2017, at the state of the nation address, Viktor Orbán, the prime minister of Hungary and the leader of the far-right, anti-immigrant Fidesz party, offered his vision for the country in the coming year. "We shall let in true refugees: Germans, Dutch, French, and Italians, terrified politicians and journalists who here in Hungary want to find the Europe they have lost in their homelands," he proclaimed.

In reality, Orbán's "refugees" have been moving to Hungary, and Budapest in particular, for years. A small clique of Identitarians, or aggrieved nationalists from Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States, France, and elsewhere, all motivated by their disdain for their home countries' commitment to liberal values, have found an ideological match in his Hungary, where two extreme far-right parties, the governing Fidesz and Jobbik, the largest opposition party, make up most of the National Assembly. Jobbik is the first European political party to champion a border wall. Its members frequently express open anti-Semitic and anti-Roma sentiments, and prioritize the preservation of "Hungary for the Hungarians."

This transformation has allowed a system of far-right culture leaders to flourish in Budapest. Coming from all over Europe and the United States, they have created a structured propaganda circuit, in the hopes of spreading their ideas far and wide.

At the center of the scene is a publishing house called Arktos Media. It is routinely referred to as the preeminent publisher of the alt-right by those within the movement and experts who study it, and is known for translating many canonical alt-right texts into English, including the first full-text English translations of Russian theorist Alexander Dugin—characterized variously on the left and fight as "the intellectual guru of Putinism," and "Putin's Rasputin." Dugin's "ethnonationalism," a belief in the creation of ethnically homogenous nation states, has been championed by white nationalists, who argue that Europe and America are innately white nations. Arktos titles largely promote a viewpoint it characterizes as "alternatives to modernity" that are critical of liberalism, human rights, and modern democracy.

Arktos originally began operations in India in 2010 when a Swedish businessman named Daniel Friberg absorbed a "traditionalist" publishing house run by American editor-in-chief John B. Morgan. Both lived in India for the first years of the company's existence. In early 2014, both Friberg and Morgan moved to Budapest to continue to expand Arktos from within the European continent. (Morgan has since left Arktos and now works for Counter-Currents, a white-nationalist publishing house and website also partially based in Budapest.) Friberg, whose vision is central to Arktos, sees its mission as changing "metapolitics," a term appropriated from 20th-century Marxist intellectual Antonio Gramsci. In Friberg's book The Real Right Returns, he argues that multiculturalism and liberal human rights—what he calls "cultural Marxism"—have been the dominant culture since the fall of Nazism, and outlines how transforming this culture space is necessary for political and social change.

Peter Kréko, a Hungarian political analyst and academic researcher of populism and extremism at Indiana University Bloomington, said that the timing of Arktos's move to Budapest was no accident. In 2014, Jobbik's popularity surged, thanks to a platform that pledged to preserve Hungarian ethnic purity. That year, Orbán was also re-elected to a second term, and Jobbik won 20 percent of the national vote and 47 seats in the parliament, while Fidesz grabbed a super-majority. The Identitarians "are happy that they feel that in Hungary there is a leader that represents their values. These are people with an almost medieval view on the world and they find a safe haven in Hungary," Kréko told me.

It is difficult to tell where Arktos's ideas end and Jobbik's begin. For both, multiculturalism is the supreme enemy. Both believe in draconian immigration laws based on ethnic and racial preservation. The Jobbik-run newspaper Magyar Hirlap (which translates to Hungarian Newspaper) has published articles sympathetic to members of Friberg's circle. Gabor Vona, Jobbik's leader, wrote an introduction to Arktos's translation of 20th-century intellectual fascist Julius Evola's A Handbook For Right-Wing Youth, a collection of Evola's essays targeted at young people interested in the radical right. Evola, who White House chief strategist Steve Bannon quoted in a 2014 speech at the Vatican, is considered by academics as "possibly the most important intellectual figure for the Radical Right in contemporary Europe." Numerous Facebook posts show Friberg shaking hands with Vona and dining with Marton Gyöngyösi, another key politician in Jobbik credited with calling for all Jews in Hungary to be registered on a list.

When I spoke with Gyöngyösi, he voiced his admiration for Evola. Jobbik's resistance to immigration, he said, is limited to people from "Africa or the Middle East," because they do not share the same "cultural values" as Hungarians, as opposed to the "Austrians or Polish or American people who come to our country and who share the same civilization, the same religion, or the same values or way of life." But despite Jobbik's ideological overlap with the Arktos scene, Gyöngyösi denied that it has any influence over the party.

Prior to Arktos, Friberg also had long-standing and prolific ties to far-right extremists in Sweden. As a teenager, he was heavily involved with neo-Nazi groups and, at the age of 28, helped construct and manage the online forum Nordisk.nu, a 22,000-member-strong gathering place for Scandinavian national socialists, including Anders Breivik. Friberg also served time in prison for various offenses from 1995 to 2010, including for possession of a stolen AK4 rifle (a rifle formerly used by Swedish army) and other illegal weapons.

More recently, Friberg has sought to obscure his violent transgressions under a cover of intellectual legitimacy. With an MBA from Göthenberg University and work experience at Wiking Mineral, a company founded by far-right political backer (and fellow Budapest resident) Patrick Brinkmann, Friberg now sports a "fashy haircut" and suits. He prefers to mingle with coiffed intellectuals and politicians in lieu of skinheads. He has spent his far-right career repackaging eugenicist ideology by rebranding the same or similar material with words such as "identitarian," "traditionalist," or "archeofuturist." His partner, U.S. white nationalist Richard Spencer, has been criticized for doing the same thing by hate-watch groups such as the Anti-Defamation League and Southern Poverty Law Center.

While Gyöngyösi admits to knowing Friberg, he claims he knows nothing of Friberg's criminal history. Gyöngyösi was skeptical before I read from his arrest record, and ultimately admitted that he is "not particularly happy ... about any criminal from any country living in Hungary." But most important to Gyöngyösi is "that nobody from outside imposes on Hungary some social model that is not welcome in Hungary."

In Budapest, Arktos is surrounded by alt-righters who have made the trek to the increasingly illiberal Hungary. Michael Polignano, co-founder of Counter-Currents, moved to Budapest in 2016, and joined the nationalist scene. After moving to Hungary in January 2017, men's rights activist Matt Forney wrote: "Imagine there's no leftists. It's easy if you try. No protests in the streets, and in front of us, only cute white girls. That world exists, and it's called Hungary." Ferenc Almassy, a French nationalist, has worked as a translator for Jobbik. He helps other French nationalists new to Hungary acclimate to their haven. Popular American far-right YouTube and Twitter personality RamZPaul, who has lived in the Hungarian capital off and on since 2013, tweeted in February to nearly 35,000 followers: "Budapest is like Paris of the 1920s. #Hungary."

In addition to Friberg's clique, other nationalists have also moved to Hungary. Although former British Nationalist Party leader Nick Griffin has claimed he is not affiliated with the "alt-right" ex-pat community, he has been deeply involved with a radical Christian organization called "The Knights Templar International," which has offices in the U.K. and Hungary. (His Twitter profile lists Budapest as one of his locations, and many articles published in March of this year commented on his plans to move there.) The Knights Templar were invited to inspect the Hungarian border in 2015 by Jobbik party member and mayor of Asotthalom, Lazsló Toroczkai, and have started a resettlement campaign called "Operation Ark" for "refugee" South African Boers to relocate to rural Hungary.

But perhaps Griffin and company shouldn't get too comfortable: on Friday, authorities expelled him from Hungary, calling him and his organization a "threat to national security." While it is certainly premature to think that this represents some national reckoning, perhaps the country's far-right ex-pats' days are numbered.

For now, these groups will continue to expand their vision beyond Hungary's party politics. In January 2017, Arktos's team and Spencer officially cemented their partnership when they teamed up to create AltRight.com, a "one-stop shop" for the emerging movement. Even Washington-based Breitbart is now rumored to be opening a Hungarian office in the near future, after acquiring the domain name Breitbart.hu. From their vantage, the possibilities of cross-border exchange look promising. In flocking to Budapest, these nationalist internationals are creating a sanctuary from which to broadcast anti-globalism across the globe.

The Government will not modify its immigration policy

"The European Union has launched infringement proceedings against Hungary and sent another letter regarding the issue about two weeks ago in which they put forward further questions with relation to the legal border barrier and transit zones", Mr. Tuzson recalled.

According to the Minister of State, the questions must be replied to by 17 June. "At its last meeting, the Cabinet decided not to modify its immigration policy and is ready to face the Commission's proceedings if required or Court proceedings if necessary"

Mr. Tuzson said it was unacceptable that in its recent ruling against Hungary the European Parliament took a stance in defence of Ahmed H., who had been convicted of terrorism by a Hungarian court. Accordingly, Hungary will be putting the case before the UN, the Council of Europe, the OECD and NATO, asking that they examine whether the Court's decision is compatible with the fact that the fundamental goal of Europe and the whole world is currently to prevent terrorism.

"As summer approaches, migration pressure on Hungary's borders is also increasing, and in addition to the various organisations that are funded by George Soros, Brussels in now also putting pressure on Hungary", he noted.

OVER 100 MIGRANTS DETAINED AT SERB-HUNGARIAN BORDER OVER THE PAST WEEK

Over the course of the past four days, authorities have detained 123 migrants attempting to cross the border from Serbia into Hungary, according to statements released by the Hungarian police.

Earlier today, at around 3 in the morning, police detained 40 migrants at the southern Hungarian town of Mórahalom. Members of the group, all of whom were men, said that they were Pakistani and Afghan citizens. They didn't have passports or any form of identification, and were subsequently escorted back to the Serbian border.

A similar incident played out on the afternoon of the 29th, when 23 migrants were apprehended by police near the Hungarian village of Ásotthalom (which achieved international notoriety due to the videos and anti-Muslim policies of its mayor). These migrants, who were also all men, told police that they were from Pakistan; they, too, were taken back to the border.

And in the early hours of Saturday, May 27th, a group of 60 people were stopped by police while trying to cross into Hungary. They were subsequently taken back across the border to Serbia.

About 20 to 30 migrants enter Serbia daily for an average of 800 migrants each month, despite the closing of the so-called "Balkan route" to migrant traffic, according to Serbian Commissioner for Migrants and Refugees Vladimir Cucic.

Cucic said about 250 migrants per month travel legally from Serbia to Hungary through points for asylum seekers set up at the borders in the Serbian towns of Horgos and Kelebija.

An average of about 700 more migrants leave Serbia illegally with the aid of human traffickers, Cucic told Serbian public broadcaster RTS.

There are currently about 6,200 migrants in Serbia, compared to 8,400 last January, following a consistent downward trend, Cucic said.

The Prime Minister said that the Hungarian hero is a unique figure, as "over here heroes for us are not those who conquer and enslave others", but those who are brave enough to take the fate of their country in their own hands, "who protect and defend that which is ours, our freedom, our families, our way of life, our country".

He reminded the non-commissioned police officers that "Today you have taken an oath to protect the borders of Hungary, and our wider homeland, Europe", drawing their attention to the fact that Hungary's stormy history has taught its people that it is not enough to build a line of defence on the borders, but the line must be repeatedly reinforced and maintained each and every day.

If there is no border protection, if there are no brave men and women to guard the borders, he said, there is no prosperity, there is no security, there is no order, and there is no progress either. All there is, he added, is uncertainty, fear, chaos, anger, and "trucks driving into crowds of people".

The appointment of the 1,206 non-commissioned police officers is part of the fourth phase in recruitment of an extra three thousand members of the standing police force, taking effect from 1 May and 1 July.

Different cultural foundations produce different migration policies

The Prime Minister noted that "It will be very difficult to reach a common position, as we have gone through different histories, we have different traditions, and we have different views on our own capability of integrating others".

Hungary respects the cultural differences – which are understandable for historical reasons – that exist between EU Member States, he said, and this respect leads to the conclusion that "it is right to keep the level of our ambitions low".

Answering another question, Mr. Orbán said that, as a Central European, he sees the issue of identity as the most important one – and this is exactly what migration is related to. The anthropological foundation of the Hungarian position, he said, is that "We should not pursue an immigration policy which means that we will no longer be what we are today".

Central Europe stands united against mass illegal migration

On Monday, 19 June, a discussion took place in Prague on the role of the Central European Defence Cooperation (CEDC) in managing mass illegal migration.

The Czech, Austrian, Croatian, Slovak, Slovenian and Hungarian delegations discussed the Joint Action Plan

At the meeting, the participants issued a short declaration which welcomes the Joint Action Plan and calls on the interior ministers of the involved countries to finalize it in the shortest time possible. The declaration takes note of the unified situation assessment, which facilitates the quick and joint mobilization of civilian, police and military capabilities, and states that the most important task is the protection of the external borders of the EU and the elimination of the root causes of migration in the sending countries.

Unkarin äärioikeisto puuhaa uutta puoluetta – "Julistamme sodan liberalismille"

Äärioikeistolaisena aiemmin tunnetun nationalistisen Jobbik -puolueen siirryttyä linjoissaan kohti poliittista keskustaa, on tämä tuonut Unkariin tilaa myös uusille ryhmittymille. Nimellä "Voima ja päättäväisyys" kulkeva äärioikeistolainen liike tähtää nyt Unkarissa vuonna 2018 pidettäviin parlamenttivaaleihin, kertoo The Guardian.

Liikkeen keskeiset teemat ovat liberalismin ja maahanmuuton vastustaminen, joiden osalta se on myös käyttänyt jyrkkää kieltä. Perustamistilaisuudessa yksi liikkeen johtajista muun muassa signeerasi kannattajalleen Adolf Hitlerin Mein Kampfin ja puhui elintilasta Euroopassa. Hän kertoi myös liikkeen julistavan sodan liberalismille.

– He ovat meidän pääasiallinen vihollisemme ja teemme kaikkemme tuhotaksemme heidän ihanteensa yhteiskunnassamme. Nämä ihmiset menettävät kansallisuutensa, rodullisen tietoisuutensa ja pian seksuaalisen identiteettinsä. Sellaiset ihmiset on pakotettava pois elinpiiristämme.

Unkarin kansalle tarjoillaan kuitenkin vieläkin jämptimpiä poliittisia vaihtoehtoja, jotka ovat omiaan kirittämään nykyisiä puolueita ja varmistamaan ettei ote lipsu. Olen kade!


PS: en hyväksy ajatusta, että liberalismin vastustaminen olisi jotenkin äärioikeistolainen kanta. Esim. katolisen kirkon opin mukaan liberalismi on syntiä ja Saatanasta peräisin. Jos kristinuskokin on äärioikeistolainen aate, niin sitten kaikki on äärioikeistoa paitsi mokutus.

Klassinen esimerkki Overtonin ikkunan yhteiskunnallisesta liukumasta. Unkarin henkinen tila on hyvä. Itse en tätä uutta puoluetta varmaankaan kannattaisi mutta sen perustaminen selvästi osoittaa että Unkari on pysyvästi rokotettu mokuttamista vastaan. Vielä eilen Jobbik oli "ääriradikaali" ajatuksineen, Overtonin ikkuna liikahti ja tänään ovat osa poliittisia keskivoimia. Orbanin Fidesz-puolue edustaa ihan selkeitä keskivoimia. Suomessa heitä kuitenkin pidetään kivenkovina rasisteina, sadisteina ja fasisteina. Kertoo siitä että saadaan hommailla Overtonin ikkunaa uudelle paikalleen vielä tovi.

Tarkentaisin, että hän ei jakanut Mein Kampfia vaan signeerasi sellaisen, kun joku paikallaolija pyysi. Kertoo osaltaan siitä, että natsi-Saksa varjo on kaikkoamassa ja Euroopassa voidaan taas tehdä politiikkaa ilman hitlerhysteriaa. Mein Kampf on kirja muiden joukossa, siinä missä Das Kapital tai joku Gramscin tai Derridan pökellyksistä

Jos elintilapuhe ymmärretään jonain Lebensraum invaasiopolitiikkana niin sehän on silkka hörhöpuhetta, totta puhut, mutta itse ymmärsin sen nykyisen elintilan varjelun näkökulmasta, voi toki olla että olen väärässä.

Valkoinen identiteetti, mistä hän myös ilmeisesti puhui, on myös minusta ihan humpuukia, mutta mikäli hän tarkoitti sillä unkarilaista identiteettiä, niin hyvä on.

Vielä kysyisin, että mitä viholliselle sitten pitäisi tehdä, jos heitä ei saa kukistaa? Voiko vihollisen kanssa jakaa elinpiirin? Olen hyvin skeptinen.

En tiedä tarkkaan kuinka Unkarin vaalijärjestelmä toimii mutta se on yleissääntö että jos samoille ääniapajille tulee useita yrittäjiä niin sillä on hajoittava vaikutus ja se viime kädessä toimii tarkoitustaan vastaan.

^Toisaalta jos koko kansa on nuivaa ja äänestää käytännössä pelkästään nuivia puolueita niin ei haittaa vaikka puolueita olisi useita? Lopputulos kuitenkin nuiva. Ja samalla vaihtoehdot ovat hyvä varotoimi, jos lipeämistä ilmenee, kuten ilmeisesti nyt on Jobbikin kohdalla käynyt.

Kateeksi käy Unkarilaisia, heillä on valittavana monta järkevää puoluetta, meillä Suomessa kun on hätinä edes yhtä.

Unkarihan menetti alueistaan suurimman osan 1. maailmansodan seurauksena. Unkarin ulkopuolelle jäi miljoonia sataprosenttisia unkarilaisia. En osaa pitää pahana sellaista tavoitetta että jotkut Unkarin vierellä olevat sataprosenttiset unkarilaisalueet voisivat saada hieman enemmän verenperintöönsä liittyviä oikeuksia.

Ymmärrän hyvin sellaisia unkarilaisia jotka päinvastoin vastustavat sitä että Unkariin pakotetaan, Brysselin toimesta, satoja tuhansia ihmisiä vieraista kulttuureista.  Kuten islamilaisia ja afrikkalaisia.

Jos kainalontuulettelijat vuotavat ulos Jobbikista niin sehän on vain hyvä juttu, Jobbik voi sitten EU-pöydissä osoittaa sormella ja sanoa että ei me olla natseja, ne ovat nuo tuolla.

No voi itku. Tuskin nuo mitään sellaista tuhoamista tarkoittaa, että "kuula kalloon ja multiin", vaan liberalismi täytyy aatteena murskata. Samanlaillahan liberaalit puhuu rasismin murskaamisesta, mutta ei kukaan oleta, että he olisivat razzzizteja multiin laittamassa, vaikka toki jotkut liberaalit cuckoomuslaiset senkin puolesta puhuu.

Liberaaleilta pitää viedä poliittinen elintila ja saattaa heidät marginaaliin, johon he kuuluvat. Kadut takaisin kansallismielisille ja liberaalit kellareihin häpeämään.

Minkä takia muuten tulet moneen ketjuun aina moralisoimaan hompanssien mielipiteitä ja itkemään hompanssien suvaitsemattomuutta? Mikä on funktiosi olla tällä foorumilla?

Jos kainalontuulettelijat vuotavat ulos Jobbikista niin sehän on vain hyvä juttu, Jobbik voi sitten EU-pöydissä osoittaa sormella ja sanoa että ei me olla natseja, ne ovat nuo tuolla.

Jobbik luopui tänä vuonna EU-eron hakemisesta politiikassaan ja muuttui EU-myönteiseksi puolueeksi. Sen lisäksi vaihtoivat pankkiirikriittisyyden pankkiirimyönteisyyteen. Sen takia sieltä porukka kaikkoaa. Jobbikhan oli puolue, joka torppasi 2016 marraskuussa Orbanin lakihankkeen, jossa olisi kielletty maahantunkeutujien sijoittaminen Unkarin alueelle. Jobbik on siis mennyt Soinilaiseen suuntaan ja siitä on tullut Sininen Tulevaisuus.
