Yleensä ihmiset joilla on lapsia on jonkinlainen huoli tulevaisuudesta. Lapset sitovat siihenkin aikaan, jolloin ei enää itse maallisia polkuja tallaa, ja tämäkin aika tulee huomioitua päätöksenteossa.

Lapsettomalla henkilöllä tällaista sidettä ei ole. Tämä ei tarkoita etteikö lapseton ihminen voisi olla mahtava poliitikko ja lapsellinen aivan kamala (kuten joku Jyrki Katainen), mutta väestötasolla tämä näkyy. Yhdysvalloissakin on tutkittu sitä, että naiset, joilla on lapsia, äänestävät paljon todennäköisemmin republikaaneja kuin ne naiset, joilla lapsia ei ole.

Suomi sai viime vuonna historiallisen paljon uusia kansalaisia

Viime vuonna myönnettyjen Suomen kansalaisuuksien määrä oli Tilastokeskuksen mukaan koko itsenäisyyden ajan suurin.

Suomen kansalaisuuden sai vuoden 2016 aikana 9 375 Suomessa vakinaisesti asunutta ulkomaiden kansalaista, mikä on 1 454 edellisvuotta enemmän.

Eniten Suomen kansalaisuuksia myönnettiin Venäjän kansalaisille, joita oli kansalaisuuden saaneissa 2 028. Määrä laski 300:lla edellisestä vuodesta.

Toiseksi eniten Suomen kansalaisuuksia myönnettiin Somalian kansalaisille, joiden määrä oli 1 066. Kolmanneksi suurin kansalaisuusryhmä oli Irakin kansalaiset ja neljänneksi eniten kansalaisuuksia myönnettiin Viron kansalaisille.

Naisia Suomen kansalaisuuden saaneista oli 4 914 ja miehiä 4 461. Suomen kansalaisuuden saaneista 96 prosenttia säilytti entisen kansalaisuutensa. Viime vuoden lopussa Suomessa asui vakituisesti 104 997 henkilöä, joilla on Suomen kansalaisuuden lisäksi jonkin toisen maan kansalaisuus.

The curious rise of the 'white left' as a Chinese internet insult

If you look at any thread about Trump, Islam or immigration on a Chinese social media platform these days, it's impossible to avoid encountering the term baizuo (白左), or literally, the 'white left'. It first emerged about two years ago, and yet has quickly become one of the most popular derogatory descriptions for Chinese netizens to discredit their opponents in online debates.

So what does 'white left' mean in the Chinese context, and what's behind the rise of its (negative) popularity? It might not be an easy task to define the term, for as a social media buzzword and very often an instrument for ad hominem attack, it could mean different things for different people. A thread on "why well-educated elites in the west are seen as naïve "white left" in China" on Zhihu, a question-and-answer website said to have a high percentage of active users who are professionals and intellectuals, might serve as a starting point.

The question has received more than 400 answers from Zhihu users, which include some of the most representative perceptions of the 'white left'. Although the emphasis varies, baizuo is used generally to describe those who "only care about topics such as immigration, minorities, LGBT and the environment" and "have no sense of real problems in the real world"; they are hypocritical humanitarians who advocate for peace and equality only to "satisfy their own feeling of moral superiority"; they are "obsessed with political correctness" to the extent that they "tolerate backwards Islamic values for the sake of multiculturalism"; they believe in the welfare state that "benefits only the idle and the free riders"; they are the "ignorant and arrogant westerners" who "pity the rest of the world and think they are saviours".     

Apart from some anti-hegemonic sentiments, the connotations of 'white left' in the Chinese context clearly resemble terms such as 'regressive liberals' or 'libtards' in the United States. In a way the demonization of the 'white left' in Chinese social media may also reflect the resurgence of right-wing populism globally.   

However, Chinese netizens' fierce attacks against the 'white left' seem curiously devoid of experiential motivation, since all these problems that conservatives in the west are concerned about – immigration, multiculturalism, minority rights, and affirmative actions – are largely unknown to Chinese society. This is not to say that discrimination against women and ethnic, religious and sexual minorities do not exist in China. They are no less serious or structural here than in any other societies. But cultural and identity politics has never gained much salience as political issues under an authoritarian regime, although feminist activists have received increased attention recently. Overall, there has been 'too little', rather than 'too much' political correctness as perceived by conservatives in the west.

In fact, heated discussions about baizuo on Chinese social media websites rarely make reference to domestic issues, except for occasionally and unsurprisingly insulting Chinese Muslims for being "unintegrated" or "complicit in the spread of Islam extremism". The stigmatization of the 'white left' is driven first and foremost by Chinese netizens' understanding of 'western' problems. It is a symptom and weakness of the Other.

The term first became influential amidst the European refugee crisis, and Angela Merkel was the first western politician to be labelled as a baizuo for her open-door refugee policy. Hungary, on the other hand, was praised by Chinese netizens for its hard line on refugees, if not for its authoritarian leader. Around the same time another derogatory name that was often used alongside baizuo was shengmu (圣母) – literally the 'holy mother' – which according to its users refers to those who are 'overemotional', 'hypocritical' and 'have too much empathy'. The criticisms of baizuo and shengmu soon became an online smear campaign targeted at not only public figures such as J. K. Rowling and Emma Watson, but also volunteers, social workers and all other ordinary citizens, whether in Europe or China, who express any sympathy with international refugees.

In May 2016, Amnesty International published their survey results indicating that the most welcoming country for refugees was China. Leaving the reliability of its sample and methodology aside, this finding was not at all taken as a compliment in the Chinese media. Global Times conducted their own online survey in response to Amnesty's claim, and the results were quite the opposite: 90.3% said 'no' to the question 'would you accept refugees in your own household?' and 79.6% said 'no' to the question 'would you accept refugees in your city, or would you like to be neighbours with refugees?'. Ironically, Amnesty's portrayal of China as a welcoming country for displaced people was even read by some netizens as part of a foreign conspiracy, intended to pressure the Chinese government to accept more refugees. A senior researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences commented that this survey was "weird" and seemed to "incite citizens against the government".   

The anti-baizuo discourse in Chinese social media gained stronger momentum during the US presidential election campaign. If criticisms of the 'white left' in the context of the refugee crisis were mainly about disapproval of 'moralist humanitarianism' mixed with Islamophobia, they became politically more elaborate as Chinese critics of the 'white left' discovered Donald J. Trump, whom they both identify with and take inspirations from. Following the debates in the US, a number of other issues such as welfare reforms, affirmative action and minority rights were introduced into online discussions on the 'white left'. Baizuo critics now began to identify Obama and Clinton as the new epitome of the 'white left', despite the fact that they were neither particularly humanitarian nor particularly kind to migrants. Trump was taken as the champion of everything the 'white left' were against, and baizuo critics naturally became his enthusiastic supporters. 

To be sure, and fortunately, not all in Chinese cyberspace talk about the 'white left' in a derogatory way, just as not all appreciate the views and style of Trump. Rao Yi, a renowned neurobiologist and public intellectual, was one of the few to publically criticize the demonization of baizuo and Chinese netizens' support for Trump on television. His statement stirred up a great deal of controversy online. An overwhelming majority of Zhihu users thought that Rao had only proved that he was typical of the 'white left': biased, elitist, ignorant of social reality and constantly applying double standards. 

What are the possible explanations of the prevailing hostility to the 'white left' in Chinese social media? Only a fraction of the arguments can be considered interests-based, and they are made by established and newly arrived overseas Chinese in Europe and North America. Many students and job-seekers in Europe, for example, argue that it is simply unfair that they "have to work so hard to stay, whereas these refugees can simply come and claim asylum". More or less established Chinese immigrants in the United States often make the case that affirmative action policies put Chinese-Americans in a disadvantageous position, and "Chinese should not pay the price for the wrongs white Americans have done". It isn't the place to analyse the pitfalls of these claims here; my focus is rather on why mainland Chinese people adopt such a strong and emotionally charged view on issues they do not have direct experience with. The following ideological, instead of interest-based factors might be at play in both domestic and international contexts.       

From a domestic perspective, the proliferation of anti-baizuo sentiment is clearly in line with the dominance of a kind of brutal, demoralized pragmatism in post-socialist China. Many of the attacks on the welfare state and the idea that states have obligations towards international refugees appeal to the same social Darwinist logic of 'survival of the fittest'. It is assumed that individuals should take responsibility for their own misery, whether it is war or poverty, and should not be helped by others. The rationale goes hand in hand with the view that inequality is inevitable in a market-economy-cum-Hobbesian-society. Although economic disparity in China has been worsening in recent years, sociologist Yu Xie found that most Chinese people regard it as an inevitable consequence of economic growth, and that inequality is unlikely to give rise to political or social unrest.

Pragmatism with an emphasis on self-responsibility seems to be the ideology of our post-ideological times. It is, in UK prime minister Theresa May's words, 'living within our means'. This is combined with a general indifference towards race issues, or even worth, with certain social Darwinist beliefs that some races are superior to others, leading many mainland Chinese netizens to dismiss struggles against structural discriminations as naïve, pretentious or demanding undeserved privileges.

Seen from the perspective of international relations, the anti-baizuo discourse can be understood as part of what William A. Callahan calls 'negative soft power', that is, constructing the Chinese self through 'the deliberate creation and then exclusion' of Others as 'barbarians' or otherwise inferior. Criticisms of the 'white left' against the background of the European refugee crisis fit especially well with the 'rising China' versus 'Europe in decline' narrative. According to Baidu Trends, one of the most related keywords to baizuo was huimie: "to destroy". Articles with titles such as 'the white left are destroying Europe' were widely circulated.

In an academic-style essay that was retweeted more than 7000 times on Weibo, a user named 'fantasy lover Mr. Liu' 'reviewed' European philosophy from Voltaire and Marx to Adorno and Foucault, concluding that the 'white left' as a 'spiritual epidemic' is on its way to self-destruction. He then stated that Trump's win was only "a small victory over this spiritual epidemic of humankind", but "western civilization is still far from its self-redemption". However ridiculous it may appear, the post is illustrative of how a demonized Other is projected onto seemingly objective or academic criticisms of the 'white left'. Ultimately, the more the 'white left' – whatever it means – represent the fatal weakness of democracy, the more institutional and normative security the Chinese regime enjoys. The grassroots campaign against the 'white left' thus echoes the officially-sanctioned campaign against 'universal values', providing a negative evidence for the superiority of the Chinese self.

Finally, it should to be noted that the internet in China is subject to strict censorship. The Chinese government has been known to hire a large number of 'internet commentators' to fabricate social media posts. According to recent research conducted by scholars at Harvard University, 29% of such posts they investigated fell into the category of 'taunting of foreign countries'. It is nonetheless impossible to know whether these accused posts are indeed written by government employees. Similarly, it is hard to tell whether some of the criticisms of baizuo are coming from fabricated commentators-for-hire. However, given the strict censorship regime, criticizing democratic values such as pluralism, tolerance, and solidarity is certainly one of the safest 'critical' opinions ordinary citizens can express online. 

TUCKER CARLSON: The Chinese have a new insult you often see in online political arguments between Mandarin speakers: the word is "Baizuo"— its literal translation is "white left" according to political scientist Chenchen Zhang who wrote about the term in a recent open democracy piece. Members of the white left are, in the view of the Chinese "biased, elitist, ignorant of social reality and constantly applying double standards. . ."

"They only care about topics like immigration, minorities, LGBT and the environment. . ." and have ". . .no sense of real problems in the real world. . ." They're people obsessed with political correctness to the extent they ". . .tolerate backward Islamic values for the sake of multiculturalism. . ." and on top of that they say the white left ". . .pity the rest of the world and think they are saviors."

Hmm, sounds like the Chinese are watching pretty carefully. The term first became popular two years ago to describe Angela Merkel and her decision to welcome more than a million third-world immigrants to Europe. Chinese students and job seekers complained they had to work very hard to stay in Europe, while unskilled migrants could simply show up, claim asylum and get welfare. Chinese immigrants to the US, meanwhile, see themselves penalized by affirmative action and wonder why they're paying the price for historic wrongs that other people committed, which is not a crazy question by the way.

One Chinese internet user described the white left as quote "a spiritual epidemic that will destroy the West and destroy China — if we're foolish enough to follow their lead."

As Donald Trump once noted of the Chinese: "They're laughing at us."

He may have been more right than he knew.

Israel's demographic future: Crowded and very religious

Israel's projected future looks a lot like a visit to the Jerusalem central bus station: crowded and very religious.
According to a government report to be released in full next week, the Jewish state's population will double in about 40 years. Some 29 percent — or 5.25 million of its projected 18 million residents — will be haredi Orthodox Jews. That's more than triple the current 9 percent.

"Israel will have the highest population density in the Western world," Sergio DellaPergola, a preeminent Israeli demographer and member of the report's steering committee, told JTA. "Interestingly, haredim will overtake Arabs as the largest minority."
The Central Bureau of Statistics revised upward its previous projection, made in 2012, that the population will reach 15.5 million in 2059, with 4.5 million haredim. DellaPergola said the bureau had wrongly assumed Israel's fertility rate would continue to decline.

If this report proves accurate, Israel — with a land area of some 8,000 square miles — will be more densely populated than the West Bank and the Gaza Strip taken together are today. Some experts have warned of impending disaster, but DellaPergola said Israel still has room to expand outside its geographic center, the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem region, in what Israelis call the "peripheria," or periphery.
"Israel has a huge area that is very underpopulated," he said. "If you can distribute the population more equally across the periphery, density is not a problem. But I haven't seen much strategy from the government."

The government has implemented a development plan focused on poor rural towns, but a State Comptroller's report released last week accused former housing minister Uri Ariel of misappropriating tens of millions of shekels earmarked for such places.
Gilad Malach, who analyzed the Central Bureau of Statistics report for the Israel Democracy Institute think tank, noted that other societies have proven able to adapt to high population density.

"It's not necessarily a disaster," he told JTA. "Singapore and Hong Kong are even more populated [than Israel is projected to be], and they are successful states. Great cities also function almost like states."
Israel is growing rapidly mostly because of its birth rate, which DellaPergola said is the highest of the world's 100 most developed countries, "some of which aren't that developed."

Once exceptionally fertile, Arab-Israeli women now have an average of 3.13 children, the same as their Jewish fellow citizens. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics report, Arabs will comprise 20 percent of the Israeli population in 2059, compared to the current 21 percent.
By contrast, after ticking downward when child subsidies were slashed in 2003, the haredi fertility rate has stabilized the past five years at 6.9 children per woman. Malach said the projected haredi population boom should be a "call to action" for Israel. He recommended the government, along with civil society, invest in haredi education and workforce integration, as well as rethink its large-family policies.

The idea is that as the haredi community becomes a bigger part of Israeli society, it must hold its own in the economy — but some current government policies incentivize haredim to remain out of the workforce. Hundreds of thousands of haredi men receive government stipends of $120 to $215 a month to study in yeshiva. Just under half of them do not work, although the percentage has been unevenly decreasing for over a decade.
Haredi families also disproportionately benefit from monthly government allowances of $42 to $52 per child.

"If we focus on policy regarding pro-natality, and specifically integration of the ultra-Orthodox into society, the dramatic growth predictions may not be fulfilled," Malach said. "It would also be good for the prosperity of the State of Israel."

Although hundreds of millions of dollars have gone into haredi education and employment in recent years, child allowances were restored in 2016 as a condition of the haredi political parties joining the governing coalition.
DellaPergola agreed that a change in government policies could lower the haredi fertility rate. But he insisted the Central Bureau of Statistics report was accurate to within "hundreds of thousands," saying it had taken into account the trend toward haredi employment.

Moshe Friedman, the CEO of Kamatech, a nonprofit that helps bring haredim into the high-tech industry, said there is no reason to fear the growth of his community. He said his group has trained or found jobs for 7,000 people since it started five years ago, and that he cannot accommodate everyone who wants to participate. A 40-person cybersecurity course he recently opened with Cisco got 900 applicants, he said.

"I see a really good trend of haredim who want to be part of society, part of the economy," Friedman told JTA. "I understand from this new report the importance of the work we are doing to help the haredim integrated into society. So I think it will be OK."

Luin vasta tuon white left-jutun. Kiinalaisilla on homma osittain hallussa, mutta (länsisuvisten tahallaan tekemä) ympäristöasioiden kaappaaminen suvis/vähemmistöhörhöilyn kylkeen on virhe. Kiinalaisten jos kenen pitäisi ymmärtää että ympäristö on tärkeä, muu vasuripaska ei.

Maailman ainoa toivo on todellinen ekofasismi. Väkeä vähemmäksi, kulutus laskuun, vähemmän ja parempaa pienemmälle porukalle. Tulevaisuus ei kuulu ymmärryskyvyttömille kansoille ja toimimattomille yhteiskunnille.

Ehkä alle sadan vuoden Euraasian pohjoisosien väestö on oppinut läksynsä ja karaistunut suorittamaan ne raamatullisen tason toimet joita lajin selviytyminen edellyttää. Ellei ole jo liian myöhäistä.

Perhepolitiikan paradoksi – miksi Texasissa syntyvyys on suurempaa kuin Suomessa?

Miksi Texasissa syntyvyys on suurempaa kuin Suomessa? Se on hyvä kysymys.

Minulla ei ole kysymykseen yhtä selkeää vastausta, mutta sitä kannattaa pohtia kahdesta syystä. Ensiksi syntyvyys vaikuttaa väestönkasvuun, joka puolestaan määrittää tuntuvasti sitä, millaisen elintason ja hyvinvoinnin jokin ihmisyhteisö – tai sanotaan arkikielellä kansa – pystyy itselleen luomaan.

Toiseksi Suomessa syntyvyys on pienentynyt, eikä muutosta näy. Trendiä kuvastaa Helsingin Sanomien uutinen tuoreesta Turun yliopiston ja Väestönliiton tutkimuksesta, jonka mukaan epävarmuus työllistymisestä saa nuoret aikuiset lykkäämään lastenhankintaa, mikä luonnollisesti vaikuttaa syntyvyyteen.

Ympäristön kantokyvyn kannalta runsas syntyvyys ja ripeä väestönkasvu eivät välttämättä ole myönteisiä kehityskulkuja, mutta rajataan tarkastelu Suomen kaltaiseen kehittyneeseen kansakuntaan, jossa maltillista väestönkasvua voidaan pitää suotavana ilmiönä.

Suomen syntyvyys on ollut väestönkasvun kannalta vähäistä lähes puoli vuosisataa. Vuonna 1969 kokonaishedelmällisyysluku putosi Suomessa alle 2,1:n.

Karkeasti määriteltynä kokonaisuushedelmällisyysluku kuvaa lapsimäärää, jonka naiset keskimäärin saavat elinaikanaan. Luvun pitää olla vähintään 2,1:ssä, jotta väestön määrä pysyy ennallaan ja sen ikärakenne tasapainossa.

Kun kokonaishedelmällisyysluku jää alle 2,1:n pitkäksi aikaa, ikääntyneiden osuus väestöstä alkaa kasvaa ja väestö supistua, mikäli väestöä ei kasvata jokin ulkoinen tekijä kuten maahanmuutto.


Viime vuonna kokonaishedelmällisyysluku pieneni Suomessa Tilastokeskuksen mukaan 1,57:ään toissa vuoden 1,65:stä. Toisin sanoen luku etääntyy 2,1:stä, ja ainakin yhden asiantuntijan mukaan se on Suomen kannalta huolestuttavaa.

Suomea voi verrata Yhdysvaltain Texasin osavaltioon. Texasin kokonaishedelmällisyysluku oli toissa vuonna 2,08 eli hieman maagisen 2,1:n alapuolella.

Vaikka Suomen ja Texasin vertailu on mielivaltaista, sillä on pointtinsa. Suomi ja Texas ovat kehittyneitä talouksia, mutta ne toteuttavat pääpiirteissään hyvin erilaista perhepolitiikkaa.

Suomessa perhepolitiikka on edistyksellistä ja syntyvyyttä tukevaa. Suomessa on vanhemmille tarjolla esimerkiksi äitiysraha, äitiyspakkaus, lapsilisä ja julkisin varoin tuettu varhaiskasvatus.

Texasissa tällaisia etuja ei tunneta. Uuden lapsen vanhemmilla on oikeus pitää pisimmillään 12 viikon mittainen korvaukseton vanhempainvapaa ja hyödyntää lapsiperusteisia verovähennyksiä.

Laajassa tarkastelussa Texasin perhepolitiikkaa voi kutsua taantumukselliseksi. Osavaltiossa vastustetaan perhesuunnittelun ja naisten lisääntymisterveydenhuollon rahoittamista julkisin varoin, ja raskaudenkeskeytyksen saattavuutta pyritään rajoittamaan.

Syntyy ristiriita: perhepoliittisesti edistyksellisessä Suomessa syntyvyys pienenee, kun taas niukasti resursoidun ja jopa taantumuksellisen perhepolitiikan Texasissa syntyvyys on verraten väkevää.

Laajemmin yksi selitys Suomen ja Texasin väliselle näennäiselle järjenvastaisuudelle eli paradoksille on se, että vanhemmat eivät tee päätöksiään yksistään ympäröivän perhepolitiikan perusteella.

Perhepolitiikan lisäksi syntyvyyteen vaikuttavat valinnat, jotka perustuvat vanhemmuutta harkitsevien ihmisten omille tavoitteille, arvoille, haaveille ja tunteille. Ne näyttävät olevan Texasissa ja Suomessa erilaisia, kun tarkastellaan potentiaalisia vanhempia isoina joukkoina.

Olivatpa syyt Suomen ja Texasin välisiin eroihin mitkä tahansa, ne herättävät ajatuksia. Yksi johtopäätös lienee se, että kohtuullisen edistyksellinen perhepolitiikka ei välttämättä korreloi suoraan suuren syntyvyyden kanssa.

Kaiketi perhepolitiikkaa pitäisi silti Suomessa parantaa, jos syntyvyyttä halutaan kasvattaa. Nykytiedon perusteella perhevapaiden uudistaminen ja maksuttoman tai edullisen varhaiskasvatuksen laajentaminen voisivat olla mielekkäitä politiikkatoimia. Toisaalta tällaiset uudistukset maksavat, joten rahan puute voi estää ne.

Syntyvyyteen vaikuttanee myös tulevaisuudenusko. Otollisimmassa lastensaanti-iässä olevien ihmisten eli nuorten aikuisten pitäisi luottaa siihen, että elämä kantaa ja hyvinvointia on luvassa.

Kokonaishedemällisyysluvun perusteella näyttä siltä, että nuoret aikuiset luottavat tulevaan Texasissa enemmän kuin Suomessa. Toisin sanoen perhepolitiikan vahvistamisen rinnalla julkisen vallan pitäisi Suomessa voimistaa potentiaalisten vanhempien tulevaisuudenuskoa.

Yhdessä yössä kulloinkin nykyinen hallitus ei pysty tulevaisuudenuskoa luomaan, mutta ajan mittaan käyttämällä sopivia politiikkatoimia nykyinen hallitus ja sen seuraajat voivat luoda perustaa tällaiselle tulevaisuudenuskolle.

Niin Texasissa enemmistö syntyneistä on jo latinoita, joilla on yleensä hieman keskivertoa korkeampi syntyvyys. Toinen tekijä Texasissa on se, että kaupungit on hyvin matalan tiheyden kaavalla rakennettuja, yleensä puolet väljempiä kuin Suomen kaupungitkin. Jos suurin osa ihmisistä asuu omakotitaloissa niin silloin tilaa on enemmän ja lapsiakin tehdään enemmän, kuin jos asuttaisiin jossain pienessä kerrostaloyksiössä. Lisäksi ns. urbaanit arvot jotka suosii hedonismia ja lapsettomuutta, ei iske yhtä vahvasti pintaan kuin tiheissä kaupungeissa.

Social class and fertility in 21st century America

Several years ago I looked at fertility among whites by sex and intelligence (as measured by Wordsum scores) and found that to the extent that the trend is dysgenic, it is almost exclusively so among women. Among whites, high IQ men have as many children as low IQ men do. That's not the case for women, and education--rather than intelligence per se--looks like the 'culprit'.

A basic understanding of mating market dynamics makes this easy to comprehend. Many men have no problem marrying 'down' in status. It often makes for a happier relationship for both sexes in those situations. Heartiste calls this the Boss-Secretary Sexual Strategy (BoSSS).

Women, however, do have a problem marrying down. And by the time women have spent a decade in college climbing the social ladder they're not as attractive as they were when they started, while men who spend a (productive) decade in college are more attractive than they were when they started.

Here's looking at that from another angle, that of social class. It's elegant in its simplicity and utility in that it combines several attributes--intelligence, income, education, etc--into a single variable, albeit a self-reported one. The GSS allows four responses for social class; lower-, working-, middle-, and upper-, with the distribution among non-Hispanic whites at about 5%-40%-50%-5%, respectively.

All data is from 2000 onward among whites aged 45 or older for contemporary relevance, to avoid racial confounding, and to allow family formation to have occurred. Mean number of children among whites, by sex and class:


With social class, too, a 'dysgenic' trend emerges among women but not among men (or a very attenuated one, anyway--there is still the issue of parental age at birth).

I've seen speculation that intelligence, especially among boys, correlates more with that of their mothers than their fathers. Here's to hoping that's not true.

At first blush it seems unlikely that intelligence is primarily determined by the mother. It would make a seemingly evolutionarily important trait, intelligence, an almost random byproduct of other selection forces. Intelligence is not high on the list of what men look for in women. Women value intelligence in mate selection more than men do, so it would be odd if the mother's intelligence was primarily determinative of the child's.

Hungary reveals new ideas to increase birth numbers by 2030

Hungary's prime minister says the government will reduce mortgages for families with three or more children and build or renovate many nurseries to help boost the country's birth rate.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban has also announced cuts to student loans owed by women with two or more children and says the government would like to increase the number of children born per woman from 1.5 now to 2.1 by 2030.

Orban said Thursday at a conference on families that he was opposed to solving demographic issues by increasing migration but that both in Hungary and in Europe "numbers show that a decisive turn is needed" to boost birth rates.

Orban said that Hungary's population of 9.8 million had fallen by nearly 1 million since 1980.

Ihan hyvä yritys, mutta en usko, että se nostaa syntyvyyttä kovin paljoa - (muutakuin ehkä romaneilla.) Edelleenkin ainoa keino lisätä syntyvyyttä on purkaa kaupungistumista (vähintäänkin väljemmäksi) ja panostaa uskonnolliseen/nationalistiseen aivopesuun pienestä pitäen mahdollisimman askeettisin metodein.

The latest household survey data results show that more millennials are living at home with their moms today, than any other living arrangement in the United States.

Zerohedge reports breaks down the main key takeaways from the survey...
•More young people today live in their parents' home than in any other arrangement: 1 in 3 young people, or about 24 million 18- to 34-year-olds, lived in their parents' home in 2015.
•In 2005, the majority of young adults lived independently in their own household, which was the predominant living arrangement in 35 states. A decade later, by 2015, the number of states where the majority of young people lived independently fell to just six.
•Most of today's Americans believe that educational and economic accomplishments are extremely important milestones of adulthood. In contrast, marriage and parenthood rank low: over half of Americans believe that marrying and having children are not very important in order to become an adult.
•Young people are delaying marriage, but most still eventually tie the knot. In the 1970s, 8 in 10 people married by the time they turned 30. Today, not until the age of 45 have 8 in 10 people married.
•More young men are falling to the bottom of the income ladder. In 1975, only 25 percent of men, aged 25 to 34, had incomes of less than $30,000 per year. By 2016, that share rose to 41 percent of young men. (Incomes for both years are in 2015 dollars.)
•Between 1975 and 2016, the share of young women who were homemakers fell from 43 percent to 14 percent of all women aged 25 to 34.
•Of young people living in their parents' home, 1 in 4 are idle, that is they neither go to school nor work. This figure represents about 2.2 million 25- to 34-year-olds.

Zerohedge notes that "parents living in liberal states like NJ, CT, NY and CA were most likely to provide 'safe spaces' for their unemployed millennials to play video games. In fact, 7 out of the top 10 states where the most millennials live at home were liberal...and 11 out of the top 15."

As millennials living at home climbs, 1 out of 4 millennials are not enrolled in school, and not working.


It is easy to think of young people living in their parents' home as a homogeneous group, as though they were all unemployed and dependent on their parents' support. At 24.2 million people, the population of 18- to 34-year-olds living at home is a large and diverse group. Most of them-about 81 percent—are either working or going to school. This should not be surprising because most people aged 18 to 24 are living in their parents' home, attending classes or working part-time. On the other hand, we might be surprised if their older peers do not contribute to the family budget because they have had more time to finish school and find a stable job. Yet, of the 8.4 million 25- to 34-year-olds living at home, about 1 in 4 are idle, meaning they are not in school and do not work.

Who are these young adults who are not in the labor force or going to school? They tend to be older millennials who are White or Black and have only a high school education, compared with their peers who are working or going to school while living at home. But they may not be idle for want of effort. They are more likely to have a child, so they may be caring for family, and over one-quarter have a disability of some kind (Table 6). That so many are disabled suggests that they have limitations in their ability to attend classes, study, find work, or keep a regular job. Recent stories on boomerang children returning home focus on economic downturns, unforgiving job markets, and high rents.30 Though often overlooked in these stories, young people's health may play an important role in their decision to live with parents.

Millennials made up a big portion of voters who supported Bernie Sanders in the US Democrat party presidential race.

In the US general election voters ages 18-to-29 skewed liberal, more than a third did not.

55% of young voters went Clinton, down from the 60% that backed Obama in 2012, while 37% voted Trump.

Ja nyt ollaan taas asian ytimessä. Unkarin väestö vähenee, syntyvyys on tosin viime aikoina ollut hieman nousussa mutta silti liian alhainen. Maahanmuuttoa ei haluta, koska hallitus on tehnyt muukalaispelosta ja rasismista poliittisen päävaluuttansa. Siispä on panostettava perheisiin, saatava naiset arvostamaan äitiyttä uravalintana, nuoret vastuuntuntoisesti sitoutumaan avioliittoon ja lasten hankintaan. (Näin siitä huolimatta, että tutkimukset osoittavat hedelmällisyyden korreloivan positiivisesti sukupuolten tasa-arvon kanssa.)

"Perhearvojen" politiikka sopii yhteen kansallis-konservatiivisten perusarvojen kanssa. Siihen voidaan kytkeä rasismin lisäksi homofobia (nuorisoa ei saa päästää homahtamaan, sillä homoparit tai muut heteroperheihanteesta poikkeavasti käyttäytyvät eivät saa lapsia, eikö niin?) ja abortinvastaisuus, ja se luo myös hyvän pohjan yhteistyölle kirkkojen (tai Unkarin kirkkojen konservatiivisten vallanpitäjien) kanssa, joilta Orbánin hallitus tunnetusti ostaa kansalaisten ideologiakasvatuspalvelut. Pahimpana viholliskuvana tälle politiikalle ovat naisten ja sukupuolivähemmistöjen tasa-arvopyrkimykset – sekä viime vuosina mahtavaksi pelotteeksi paisutettu "gender-ideologia" (siis ajatus siitä, että sukupuoli on suhteellinen ja yhteiskunnallisesti konstruoitu rakenne), jopa akateeminen sukupuolentutkimus. Ja tietenkään siihen ei sovi "perheen" ja "perheväkivallan" yhdistäminen tai naisen oikeus asettaa oma hyvinvointinsa perheen koossa pysymistä tärkeämmäksi.

Tätä politiikkaa ollaan juuri nyt demonstroimassa Budapestissa käynnistyneessä "Perheiden maailmankongressissa", jossa on koolla, sanoisinko nyt, "Aito avioliitto" -porukkaa eri puolilta maailmaa (muun muassa Venäjän valtioelimet ja ortodoksinen kirkko ovat hyvin edustettuina). Tapahtuman amerikkalainen pääjärjestäjä on kunnostautunut kampanjoimalla seksuaalivähemmistöjä, feminismiä ja aborttia vastaan, ja samanhenkistä porukkaa näyttää olevan myös osanottajisto. Tapahtuman pääsivulla kehutaan Unkaria perheystävälliseksi maaksi, ja tässä ihailussa paistatteli myös tapahtuman avaajana esiintynyt pääministeri Orbán.

Index-uutissivuston mukaan Orbán oli kansainvälisen perhearvoväen edessä luvannut Unkarin lapsiperheille verovähennyksiä, pitempiä äitiyslomia, vähintään kolmilapsisille perheille velkahelpotuksia ja täyttä vapautusta opintoveloista, lisäksi tulossa on uusi lastenseimien kehitysohjelma, ja ns. babakötvény eli syntyville vauvoille maksettava kertakaikkinen tukisumma tulee saataville "koko Karpaattien altaassa" eli entisessä Suur-Unkarissa – siis ilmeisesti naapurimaiden unkarilaisvähemmistöjä kosiskellaan jälleen. Sitä, mistä nämä tukitoimet maksetaan, ei kerrottu. Huomionarvoista on myös, että tukitoimet on selvästi suunnattu koulutetun keskiluokan lisääntymistä tukemaan, ei auttamaan kaikkein köyhintä väestönosaa – ja sen joukossa etenkin (perinteisten pahojen puheiden mukaan, joissa on tietty totuuden siemen) "holtittomasti lisääntyvää" romaniväestöä. Kuitenkin EU:n tilastojen mukaan Unkarissa yli 41% lapsista on vaarassa joutua kärsimään köyhyydestä; vielä heikommin ovat asiat vain Romaniassa ja Bulgariassa.

Unkarin hallitus ei siis halua maahan muukalaisten tai mustalaisten (ynnä muiden epäsosiaalisten ainesten) lapsia vaan toivoo yhä kunnon valkoisten, kristittyjen, keskiluokan unkarilaisten perheiden ryhtyvän tuottamaan lisää rotupuhdasta unkarilaista jälkikasvua (vaikkapa myös Unkarin ulkopuolella). Tämän politiikan ikoniksi nousi juuri Fidesz-puolueen painijanniskainen varapuheenjohtaja, "Rezsi-Szilárd" Németh, joka puolueen äskettäisessä yleisötilaisuudessa lausui:

"Maailma kuuluu sille, joka synnyttää sen täyteen."

Lausahdus, jota unkarilainen somekuplani parhaillaan kauhistelee, ei ole uusi eikä varsinkaan Szilárd Némethin keksimä. Nopealla Google-haulla suunnilleen vastaava ilmaus ("maailman" sijasta tosin puhuttiin "maasta") löytyi esimerkiksi vuodelta 2002, lausujana reformoidun kirkon piispa, äärioikeistolaisista kytköksistään tunnettu Lóránt Hegedűs. Nyt nämä äärioikeistohörhöjen ajatukset on siis entistä avoimemmin omaksuttu valtavirtapuolueena esiintyvän valtapuolueen ideologiaan.

Tämän kehityksen valossa on ilmiselvää, että Istanbulin sopimuksellakaan ei näytä Unkarissa olla mitään mahdollisuuksia tulla hyväksytyksi. Rita Antoni toteaa artikkelinsa lopussa, että vuosi 2017 alkoi hallituksen epämääräisillä lupauksilla Istanbulin sopimuksen toteutumista edistävistä selvityksistä, mutta nämä peruttiin nopeasti. Toukokuussa asetelma alkoi olla ilmiselvä, kun hallituksen tukema "valekansalaisjärjestö" Alapjogokért Központ ("Perusoikeuksien puolesta -keskus") julkisti vastalauseensa Istanbulin sopimukselle. Pari valittua otetta:

Viime aikoina on näkynyt paljon kirjoitettavan Margaret Atwoodin 1980-luvun romaaniin Orjattaresi (The Handmaid's Tale) perustuvasta tv-sarjasta. Tarinan "Gilead" on uskonnollisten fundamentalistien hallitsema dystopiavaltio, teokraattinen diktatuuri, jossa naiset on orjuutettu synnytyskoneiksi. Euroopassa tähän on onneksi vielä pitkä matka – mutta siihen suuntaan Orbánin Unkari näyttää kaivaten katselevan.

-Eli valtio takaa sinulle vielä jo annetun 10 Miljoonan HUF:in päälle toiset 10 Miljoonaa HUF:ia noin 3% korkokatolla varustettuna ja takaisinmaksu aikaa annetaan 25 vuotta.

– Jatkossa myös ensimmäistä asuntoa ostettaessa asunnon arvonlisävero ei ole 27% vaan se putoaa 5%:iin ja verottajalta saa hyvitystä remontti kustannuksista mikäli sellaisia tulee.

Eli ensiasunnon ostajalle ensimmäinen asunto on myös halvempi eikä verottaja ahdistele.

Tällainen politiikka kannustaa ihmisiä voimakkaasti hankkimaan perheen, maassa on ilmainen koulutus ja maassa on ilmainen terveydenhuolto joten niidenkään asioiden suhteen ei tarvitse kantaa huolta.

Eli jatkossa Unkarin väestö kasvaa ja ihmisillä on varaa hankkia lapsia kun asuminen on turvattu ja rahat eivät kaikki mene asumisen kustannuksiin tai velan lyhentämiseen sun muuhun.

Lisäksi annan Unkarin asuntomarkkinoilta nyt esimerkin minkälaisia omakotitaloja sieltä saa:

Esimerkiksi tuon hinta on 16,5 miljoonaa HUF:ia.

According to the Global Property Guide, the average detached house price in Hungary is HUF 9.3 million.

Minister Lázár said that the grant was part of the extension of the government's "family first home benefit."

10 million forints is about $35,000.

You may recall that this is the exact same sum that George Soros is demanding that the EU pay each immigrant during just their first two years there. No wonder he and his minions hate Orban so much.

HS: Lapsettomiksi jäävät yhä useammin vähän koulutetut miehet - ongelma piilee parinmuodostuksessa

Vähän koulutetuista miehistä jopa kolmasosa jää lapsettomiksi, kertoo tuore tutkimus.

Korkeasti koulutettujen uskotaan usein jäävän lapsettomiksi kuin vähemmän koulutetut. Turun yliopiston akatemiatutkija Marika Jalovaara kertoo Helsingin sanomissa näkemyksen olevan kuitenkin ajastaan jäljessä. Suomessa syntyvyys on tästä huolimatta Pohjoismaiden alhaisinta.

Vielä 1940–1950 -luvuilla syntyneissä ikäluokissa korkeasti koulutetut naiset jäivät lapsettomiksi selvästi useammin kuin perus- ja keskiasteen suorittaneet. Tuore Suomen Akatemian rahoittama tutkimus paljastaa asetelman kuitenkin kääntyneen päälaelleen.

Tutkimuksessa tarkastelun kohteista ne, joilla ei 40. ikävuoteen mennessä ollut biologisia lapsia, laskettiin lapsettomiksi. Tässä tarkastelussa 1940-luvulla syntyneet vain perusasteen käyneet naiset jäivät lapsettomiksi selvästi korkeasti koulutettuja harvemmin.

Tällä hetkellä lapsettomien osuus on korkeasti koulutetuissa naisissa kaikkein alhaisin. Vastaavasti yleinen lapsettomuusluku on kasvanut ja erityisesti kasvua on ollut perus- ja keskiasteen koulutuksen saaneilla naisilla.

Miesten lapsettomuus kasvaa tutkimuksen mukaan kaikilla koulutusasteilla. 1940-luvulla syntyneistä vähän koulutetuista miehistä vain neljännes oli lapsettomia. 1960-luvulla syntyneistä jo peräti kolmannes. Tutkimus paljastaa, että olennaisessa osassa lapsettomuuskehityksessä on parinmuodostus ja muuttuvat parisuhteet. Lapsettomien parisuhdehistoria havaittiin useissa tapauksissa hajanaiseksi ja mahdolliset suhteet lyhytikäisiksi.

Työllisyys on yksi isoimmista haasteista ja sosiaalisista kriiseistä, jota Afrikan manner käy tällä hetkellä läpi.

Kiberan lisäksi koko Kenian ja Afrikan jo valmiiksi suuret työttömyysluvut ovat vaarassa räjähtää käsiin lähivuosina. Afrikan työmarkkinoille tulee vuosien 2010-2020 välisenä aikana 120 miljoonaa uutta työnhakijaa. Vuoteen 2040 mennessä työnhakijoita arvioidaan olevan yli 700 miljoonaa ja Afrikan maailman suurin työmarkkina.

Viralliset tilastot sanovat tällä hetkellä, että noin 17 prosenttia työikäisestä väestä olisi työttömiä. Todellisuudessa työttömien määrä on paljon korkeampi, siinä 30-40 prosentin luokkaa, kertoo työnhakupalvelua Afrikan markkinoille kehittävän suomalais-kenialaisen kasvuyrityksen Fuzun toimitusjohtaja Jussi Hinkkanen.

Keniassa on yhteensä 46 miljoonaa ihmistä, joista noin 20 miljoonaa kuuluu työikäiseen väestöön.

Kaikista hankalinta työnsaanti on nuorille. 80 prosenttia Kenian työttömistä onkin alle 35-vuotiaita nuoria.

Hinkkanen huomauttaa, että jos miljoonat työmarkkinoille lähitulevaisuudessa tulevat kenialaisnuoret eivät löydä tekemistä tai paikkaansa työmarkkinoilta, ei vaikeuksissa ole yksistään Kenia. Se, miten ihmiset työllistyvät omassa kotimaassaan, näyttelee kriittistä roolia siinä, lähtevätkö ihmiset hakemaan mahdollisuuksia muualta.

– Jos tulevaisuus ei tästä kirkastu, se tulee näkymään Suomessa asti. Syyrian kriisi on ihan vasta alkusoittoa, kun puhutaan muutamasta miljoonasta pakolaisesta. Afrikan kohdalla puhumme helposti kymmenistä tai jopa sadoista miljoonista, Hinkkanen painottaa.

Hinkkasen mukaan kriisi on mahdollista saada ratkaistua, vaikka paikallisen potentiaalin irti saaminen vaatii paljon työtä. Tärkeää olisikin saada nyt Keniaan ja koko Afrikan mantereelle runsaasti uusia investointeja.

Turkey's fertility rate falls to critical level of 2.1 for first time since WWI

Turkey's fertility rate hit the replacement level of the population in 2016, at 2.1 children, according to 2016 birth statistics released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) on May 18.

This means that on average, a woman aged between 15 and 49 in Turkey gave approximately 2.1 live births during her reproductive life, as the fertility rate of 2.1 per woman is the figure necessary to generate a stable population within a country.

The fertility rate has been declining consistently every year in Turkey. It was 2.8 in 1990, 2.17 in 2007, and 2.15 in 2015.

"The latest TÜİK figure is now at the critical threshold. There is no country in the world that has fallen below 2.1 and then gone back above it. If you lose that level very easily, then recovering is very difficult. In the latest example, Russia is trying to give people incentives even for children born out of wedlock. All of Western Europe is getting older," said ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) lawmaker Cengiz Aydoğdu, a former general director of the Population and Citizenship Affairs General Director.

"We noticed the decrease in fertility at the beginning of the 2000s. At the sessions in which TÜİK participated, [the Ankara-based] Hacettepe University Institute of Population Studies had said '2.14 children per woman was the critical level for the population.' It was forecasted that the increase in the population would stop in the 2020s and a decrease would take place at a population level approximating 90 million," Akdoğdu said.

There were 1,333,771 live births in 2016 in Turkey, according to TÜİK's figures. Up to now, TÜİK has always used the term "above the replacement level of population" for Turkey's fertility rate, but for the first time in 2016 it said the rate was "at the level of the replacement."

In 2016, the province with the highest total fertility rate was the eastern province of Şanlıurfa, which holds the most number of Syrian refugees after Istanbul, with 4.33 children. Şanlıurfa was followed by the eastern provinces of Ağrı, Siirt and Şırnak.

The provinces with the lowest total fertility rate was Karabük in the Black Sea region with 1.46 children.

Karabük was followed by the western provinces of Edirne and Kırklareli with 1.48 children and the Black Sea province of Zonguldak with 1.50 children.

The United Nations, meanwhile, had forecast a fertility rate of 1.85 for Turkey in 2016, lower than TÜİK's forecast of 1.95 children. The fact that the actual figure was above the forecasts is thought to be down to the 70,000 Syrian refugee babies born every year in the country, but there are no official figures on the degree to which the birth rate of Syrian refugees affected the official fertility rate.

Enemmistö suomalaisista ei halua asua alueella, jossa on paljon maahanmuuttajia

Suomalainen haluaa asua pientalossa lähellä kaupunkia. Tiivis, kaupunkimainen rakentaminen torjutaan.

Väite, jonka mukaan "asumisen ja rakentamisen tulee olla tiivistä ja kaupunkimaista" kääntää suomalaisten peukalot alaspäin, käy ilmi KAKS – Kunnallisalan kehittämissäätiön tutkimuksesta.

Vain vajaa kolmannes (31 %) pitää ajatusta hyvänä. Torjunta on jokseenkin tyly (59 %).

Teesi "Suomalaiset haluavat asua väljästi, jonka takia asumisen tiivistämisellä ei ole tulevaisuutta", tuottaa lähes päinvastaisen tuloksen. Enemmistö (59 %) hyväksyy väittämän, reilu neljännes (29 %) ei. Vahvimmin väljän asumisen kannalla ovat perussuomalaisten (81,5 %) ja keskustan (65,8 %) kannattajat.

Vahvimmin tiivistä asumista toivovat vihreiden (48 %) ja kokoomuksen (48 %) kannattajat, pääkaupunkiseudulla asuvat (49 %), yli 85 000 euroa vuodessa ansaitsevat (46%), akateemisen koulutuksen saaneet (50 %) ylemmät toimihenkilöt (48 %).

SDP:n ja vasemmistoliiton kannattajista tiivistä rakentamista toivoo kolmannes ja perussuomalaisista vain lähes joka viides (18 %).

Suomalaisten mielipiteet ovat muuttuneet vuodesta 2013. Nyt aiempaa useampi on sitä mieltä, että asumisen ja rakentamisen tulee olla tiivistä ja kaupunkimaista. Tiiviin rakentamisen kannatus on noussut 22 prosentista 31 prosenttiin.

Kolmannes mielii kaupunkiin

Suomalaisten toiveita kuvastaa hyvin se, että kaksi kolmesta (64 %) ilmoittaa tutkimuksessa haluavansa asua alueella, jossa saa olla omissa oloissani kenenkään häiritsemättä.

Reilu neljännes (29 %) väestöstä torjuu ajatuksen asumisesta omissa oloissa. Vuodesta 2013 näkemykset eivät ole muuttuneet siitäkään huolimatta, että tiiviin ja kaupunkimaisen asumisen suosio on lisääntynyt.

Käänteinen väittämä "Asuisin mielelläni kaupunkimaisessa ympäristössä ja ihmisvilinässä" tuottaa yhtä selvän lopputuleman. Reilu kolmannes (35 %) suomalaisista mielii kaupunkimaista elinympäristöä ja selvälle enemmistölle (58 %) asia on enemmän tai vähemmän vastenmielinen. Kaupunkimaisessa ympäristössä mielellään asuvien osuus on lisääntynyt vuodesta 2013 28 prosentista 35 prosenttiin.

Kaksi viidesosaa (41 %) suomalaisista toivoisi asuvansa edustavalla ja arvostetulla asuinalueella. Väittämän torjuu hieman suurempi osa kansalaisista (46 %). Epätietoisuus on lisääntynyt vuodesta 2013. Etenkin ylemmät toimihenkilöt, korkeasti koulutetut, hyvin toimeentulevat ja pääkaupunkiseudulla asuvat toivoisivat asuinalueelta edustavuutta ja arvostusta.

Enemmistö (53 %) väestöstä on taipuvainen hyväksymään väittämän "en halua asua alueella, jossa on paljon maahanmuuttajia". Kolmannes (33 %) torjuu sen. Epätietoisuus on lisääntynyt vuodesta 2013 ja väittämän torjuvien osuus vähentynyt.

Omakotitalo suosituin

Enemmistö (56 %) suomalaisista asuisi mieluiten omakotitalossa. Suomalaisten näkemykset eivät näytä muuttuneen viimeksi  kuluneen kymmenen vuoden aikana. Viidennes (20 %) suomalaisista pitää mieluisimpana asumismuotona kerrostaloa ja reilu kymmenesosa (12 %) rivitaloa.

Omakotiasujat haluavat vastaisuudessakin asua omakotitalossa (87 %). Kerrostaloasujista joka kolmas (33 %) asuisi omakotitalossa, jos siihen olisi mahdollisuus. Kerrostalossa asuvista 40 prosenttia pitää kerrostaloa parhaana asumismuotona.

Kerrostaloasumisen suosio on keskimäärää suurempaa nuorimpien (18–30-vuotiaiden) keskuudessa (26 %). Omakotitalo viehättää etenkin yrittäjiä (72 %). Maaseutumaisessa ympäristössä asuvista lähes neljä viidestä (78 %) asuisi mieluiten omakotitalossa. Kaupunkimaisella asuinalueella lähes joka toinen (46 %) pitää parhaana asumismuotona omakotitaloa.

Asuinpaikakseen kyselyyn vastanneet valitsisivat useimmiten pientaloalueen lähellä kaupungin keskustaa (29 %). Toiseksi himoituin asuinympäristö on maaseudun haja-asutusalue lähellä kaupungin keskustaa (20 %).

Yksi kymmenestä (11 %) suomalaisesta asuisi mieluiten kaupungin keskustassa. Keskimäärää useammin nämä ovat pääkaupunkiseudulla (19 %) ja Uudellamaalla (17 %) asuvia. Ylemmistä toimihenkilöistä (24 %) ja vihreiden tukijoista (43 %) asuisi mieluiten kaupungin keskustassa.

KAKS - Kunnallisalan kehittämissäätiön tutkimuksen toteutti Kantar TNS Oy. Tutkimusaineisto on koottu Gallup Kanavalla 14.–18. huhtikuuta viikko kuntavaalien jälkeen. Haastatteluja tehtiin yhteensä 1036. Vastaajat edustavat maamme 18-75-vuotiasta väestöä. Tutkimuksen tulosten virhemarginaali on suurimmillaan vajaat kolme prosenttiyksikköä suuntaansa.

Mitä väljempää asuminen on, niin sitä vallitsevampia on konservatiiviset arvot ja äänestyskäyttäytyminen ja mitä tiiviimpää asuminen niin sitä liberaalimmaksi äänestyskäyttäytyminen menee, joten asialla on poliittista merkitystä. Myös maahanmuuttajia naapurissa vastustetaan.

Germany is not shrinking

Until recently, Germany's population was shrinking because not enough children were being born. Increased immigration and higher birth rates have changed the prognosis. Has a demographic crisis been averted?

For many years, it was a generally accepted fact that the German population was going to fall. The Federal Statistical Office and the Federal Institute for Population Research pointed to continually low birth rates and not enough immigration as the reasons for this development. If birth rates remained constant at 1.4 children per woman and immigration at 100,000 people per year, by 2060 Germany would no longer be home to around 80 million people - the figure would have fallen to around 68 million.

However, according to revised scenarios the German government has presented in its latest summary of demographic-political developments, this shrinkage apparently isn't happening. The message is that ongoing high immigration, coupled with a recent increase in the birth rate, could keep the country's population stable for another forty years.

Stable population until 2060

Until now, statisticians have assumed the migration balance would be 100,000 to 200,000 per year. However, recent government estimates said this figure was more likely to be 300,000.
The birth rate also shows an upward trend, the government says. It had been dropping for decades, but now appears to have stabilized. The Federal Statistical Office assumes that 1.6 children are currently born for every one woman in Germany. This is also included in the report: "With net migration of 300,000, combined with a birth rate of 1.6 and a more pronounced rise in life expectancy, the population of Germany would remain stable at around today's levels until 2060."

Ageing population: An earthquake for the job market

So does this mean the oft-mentioned demographic crisis has been averted? De Maiziere says not. Despite immigration and rising birth rates, the government's latest prognoses show that the average age of the population will increase significantly. According to the report, this means that with a net migration figure of 300,000, the old-age dependency ratio would be only slightly lower than in the variants with lower immigration. In recent years, average life expectancy in Germany increased by almost 2.6 months a year, to 78.2 years for men and 83.1 years for women.

Professor Enzo Weber, who heads a research department at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), predicts huge problems, particularly for the labor market. "In the near future, in just a few successive years, 13 million baby boomers will reach statutory retirement age," Weber told DW. That's 13 million new pensioners, who will simultaneously cease to be part of the labor market and the working population.

According to Professor Weber, higher birth rates will not plug the gap. Only immigration can do that. "Even if they were to snap their fingers and raise the birth rate to 2.5 children for every woman, that wouldn't stop the demographic changes that are going to take place on the labor market over the next twenty years." The workforce, he said, was shrinking far more quickly than the overall population because the retirement age continued to hover around 65.

This means that for the workforce in Germany (currently a record 43.8 million people) to remain even remotely stable, it would require 400,000 more people to immigrate every year than emigrate. But Weber notes that the integration of so many immigrants into the labor market and society could also place society under too great a strain, which is why he's assuming a marked drop in employment figures is more likely.

There are probably more men than women raped in the United States every year — most of them in prison. Best estimates put the annual number of prison rapes at about 140,000, which is 50,000 more than the 90,000 or so rapes of women reported to police. Gang rape of the most brutal kind is common, and weaker prisoners often seek protection from a "daddy" who fights off other predators in exchange for total submission and sex on demand. There is an ugly racial dimension to prison rape: Blacks and Mexicans deliberately seek out white victims, and black-on-white rape is probably more common than any other kind. Prison rape is an appalling secret in a country that prides itself on human rights

One reason there is so much prison rape is that Americans refuse even to think about it. The sheer brutality of it and the racial hatred that so often drives it are too gruesome to face. To its immense credit, a lefty organization called Human Rights Watch has done a serious prison-rape study and has published its findings in a book-length report called No Escape.The only sure defense against rape is a willingness to fight, and even this may be no protection against gang assault.

In many prisons a small, unaggressive white is sure to be raped, probably by blacks or Hispanics. As one prison guard explains, a young white has "almost zero" chance of escaping rape "unless he's willing to stick someone with a knife and fortunate enough to have one." Some of the tougher inmates may even fight each other for the chance to rape an effeminate young white.

The racial dynamic in prisons puts whites at a tremendous disadvantage. First, whites are often outnumbered by both blacks and Hispanics. But far more important, just as they show no racial solidarity in "the free world," whites in prison do not band together to protect each other from predators. As No Escape reports, Hispanics sometimes rape Hispanics, and blacks sometimes rape blacks, but neither group permits anyone of another race to rape its own people. If a black tried to "turn out" a Mexican, the Mexicans would riot and try to kill him. Blacks also defend each other from white or Hispanic rapists. It is only whites — unless they are known members of white racialist gangs who do stick together — who are on their own and can be raped with impunity. It would be hard to think of a more cruel consequence of stripping whites of racial consciousness.

Some whites must choose between being the sex slave of one man or facing repeated assault. The stories they told No Escape read like nightmares:

I had no choice but to submit to being Inmate B's prison wife. Out of fear for my life, I submitted to sucking his dick, being fucked in my ass, and performing other duties as a woman, such as making his bed. In all reality, I was his slave . . . I determined I'd be better off to willingly have sex with one person, than I would be to face violence and rape by multiple people. The most tragic part to this is that the person I chose to 'be with' has AIDS.


A Michigan inmate writes:

[Another prisoner] claimed me as his property and I didn't dispute it. I became obedient, telling myself at least I was surviving . . . He publicly humiliated and degraded me, making sure all the inmates and guards knew that I was a queen and his property. Within a week he was pimping me out to other inmates at $3.00 a man. This state of existence continued for two months until he sold me for $25.00 to another black male who purchased me to be his wife.

A different inmate describes how he became a black man's "ho."

You will clean the house, he said, have my clothes clean, and when I'm ready to get my 'freak' [sex] no arguments or there will be a punishment! I will, he said, let my homeboys have you or I'll just sale you off. Do we have an understanding? With fear, misery, and confusion inside me . . . I said yes.

More so than African American prisoners, many whites asserted that the prison experience had made them racist — or, as they tended to put it, 'racially aware.'

"Starboy" - top Nigerian scammer - among latest arrests in Thai PM's crackdown
A top Nigerian scammer known in the black community as "Starboy" was arrested yesterday along with five friends all from the west African country.

Antonio Joscarlos, along with a Thai woman called Sukanya, had used a fake Facebook profile to con middle aged Thai men looking for love.

They used a picture of a beautiful female US soldier and pretended to be her - they were chatting to 38 men at the time of their arrest at JP Smart Condominium in Pak Kret.

Victims were persuaded in the "romance scam" to send money to their accounts.

Taken into evidence were a computer notebook, ten phones, bankbooks, cash and other valuables.

Also arrested yesterday were five friends of "Starboy" - all Nigerians - running investment scams tricking Thai couples. Three million baht in funds was found as part of this subsequent investigation.

The crime led to connections in Senegal.

Leading the crackdown ordered by prime minister Prayut Chan-ocha and deputy Prawit Wongsuwan is acting tourism police chief Surachet Hakpan who said that romance scams and bogus investment schemes were causing a lot of trouble for the country.

The former relied on those looking for love while the latter relied on people's greed.

All those arrested have been initially detained on fraud and false pretenses charges though Daily News reported that false imprisonment and assault may be added to the rap sheet for some of them.

The crackdown is targeting mostly those in the African community using tourism as a cover for illegal activities.
