Kassam, josta kirjoitin aiemmin tässä ketjussa, veti ehdokkuutensa pois. Vaihtoehdot ovat nyt Suzanne Evans, Paul Nuttall ja John Rees-Evan. Vaali on jo käyty ja sen tulos julkistetaan huomenna klo 11.15 (eli Suomen aikaa klo 13.15) alkavassa tiedotustilaisuudessa. Uuden puheenjohtajan on määrä aloittaa toimessaan siitä hetkestä lähtien.

Nuttall on ennakkosuosikki. Hän on ilmoittanut jatkavansa europarlamentaarikkona ja seuraavansa maansa EU-eroneuvotteluja. Kohtuulliset mahdollisuudet on myös Evansilla, jonka kiistat puolueen johtohenkilöiden kanssa ovat aiemmin olleet julkisuudessa. Rees-Evansin valinta on epätodennäköinen. Hän pitää itseään kentän edustajana ja Nuttallia ja Evansia puolue-eliittinä.

Lähteenäni on kaksi Expressin verkkolehden juttua, tämä ja tämä. Vaikuttaa siltä, että kuka valitaankaan, puolueessa on konfliktitunnelma ja on epäselvää, miten se kokoaa itsensä ja mikä sen rooli tulee olemaan.

Puolueen uusi puheenjohtaja on europarlamentaarikko Paul Nuttall. Hän sai jäsenäänestyksessä 63 prosenttia äänistä, Evans sai 19 ja Rees-Evans 18 prosenttia.

Kun Nuttall nousi puheenjohtajaksi, hän piti puheen, jossa asetti tavoitteekseen, että UKIP:istä pitää tehdä vahva puolue, joka korvaisi Labourin. Tavoite on kunniahimoinen, mutta tämä lienee Britannian vaalijärjestelmässä ainoa mahdollisuus, jolla puolue pääsisi myös itse vallankahvaan. Nytkin se on voinut vaikuttaa asioihin nostamalla keskusteluun asioita, joita konservatiivit ja Labour eivät olisi halunneet nostaa esiin. Nuttall suunnittelee valloittavansa työväen suosion keskittymällä heille tärkeisiin teemoihin: maahanmuuttoon, rikollisuuteen, puolustukseen, Britannian varojen käyttämiseen ulkomailla ja brittien asemaan työmarkkinoilla.

BBC:n politiikantoimittaja arvioi, että Nuttall on puoluetta yhdistävä henkilö. Brittiyleisradio kertoo henkilökuvassaan, että uusi puheenjohtaja vastustaa kulttuurimarksismia ja vastaa puheisiin "totuudenjälkeisestä ajasta", että ihmisiä on huijattu EU:n suhteen ja että nyt on petoksenjälkeisen ajan vuoro.

We Must Put An End To Migrant Scapegoating

We need to stand up to the far-right and hard-right political parties and their peddling hate and division in the United States, Europe and here in Britain, writes DIANE ABBOTT MP

ACROSS many of the world's most developed countries, we are seeing a deeply worrying rise in the politics of hate, with right-wing politicians scapegoating migrants, refugees and others for the problems different countries face.

The most obvious example of this, of course, is US President Donald Trump, with his pledge to build a wall to keep out migrants and his odious travel ban that has become known globally as a Muslim ban.

Both these policies have led to widespread international outrage but despite this, and legal challenges, he has shown he is not for turning on them.

When it comes to the much publicised changes to the travel ban this week, Labour's shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry was quite right when she aid: "Despite some cosmetic changes, this remains a retrograde step for the United States [and] by abdicating its responsibilities under international law, the administration continues to send a terrible message to the rest of the world on the refugee crisis."

But there are also examples closer to home. In Europe, far right and hard right parties have gained notable electoral successes in numerous countries, and perhaps just as importantly had a noticeable impact on the discourse more mainstream political parties and various governments have taken on issues relating to asylum and immigration.

The political bidding war that has then taken place in many countries to prove who is toughest on immigration has then actually led to legitimising, and in some countries further building support for, these hard right and far right parties.

This has undoubtedly been the case in France, where the rise of the National Front (FN) over a number of years has both seen examples of anti-migrant and Islamophobic rhetoric becoming all too common across much of the political spectrum, and the FN still maintains and builds support.

In the Netherlands, all eyes are on how well Geert Wilders and his so-called "Party for Freedom" will do in the upcoming parliamentary election. While polls suggest they will probably not now lead the vote, they would still get about 25 seats, more than double the 12 they currently hold.

His platform — like that of Trump — centres around attacking migrants and Muslims, including through closing mosques, banning the Koran and shutting down immigration from predominantly Muslim countries.

Here in Britain, in a situation of growing economic insecurity and the prolonged squeeze on wages and living standards, the government has engaged in an anti-foreigner distraction with it increasingly feeling as if Theresa May's government is stealing Ukip's clothes on issues of asylum and immigration.

Indeed, this week's parliamentary vote not to honour the Dubs amendment was the latest in a line of shameful decisions by this government with regards to the refugee crisis, with the Tories so desperate to be seen to be tough on immigration and to pander to anti-refugee rhetoric from the likes of Ukip that they are prepared to ignore our obligations to refugees under international law, including some of the most vulnerable children in the world.

And when it comes to the rights of EU nationals living and working here in Britain, the government's approach using EU citizens as bargaining tools is an indication of how they are willing to appease anti-immigration sentiment even at the expense of the economy.

We should also remember that scapegoating has a real impact on people's lives, as shown by the rise in hate crime after the vote to leave the EU in June last year, when the official Leave campaign and Ukip had relentlessly attacked immigrants during the campaign.

When expressing grave concern about this, the Equality and Human Rights Commission was right to say politicians need to be careful about the language they use in debate around issues such as immigration.

More widely, we need to be clear that the only way to defeat hard-right parties and their ideas of hate and division is to both stand up to those peddling anti-foreigner myths and offer a clear and radical alternative to the failed economic strategy of the Tories that is deepening poverty and inequality.

For all these reasons, it is welcome that the March Against Racism will take place in London on Saturday March 18, which coincides with UN Anti-Racism Day and other anti-racist demonstrations across Europe.

A good attendance will send a powerful message that the scapegoating of refugees and migrants must end.

As the publicity for the March Against Racism puts it, "in a situation where migrants, Muslim women and anyone considered to be 'foreign' are being attacked on a daily basis and refugees are being abandoned by Britain and Europe to destitution, drowning and exploitation, there has never been a more important time in recent history to stand up to racism."

The Anti-Migrant Machine Can Be Beaten Easily

If experts can't convince people, confront them with real life, says NATHAN AKEHURST

LAST month, a grandmother from Ouston, County Durham, was marched onto a flight by a squad of border officers. Between Dungavel detention centre and Edinburgh Airport, they gave her a few minutes on the phone to say goodbye to her sick British husband, a retired electrical engineer who she met in the 1980s. Irene Clennell was then flown out of Britain, potentially permanently.

Families are frequently broken up by the Home Office. One immigration solicitor I spoke to claims to see such cases around twice a week and bemoans a "Kafkaesque immigration system where families are told to quit their jobs and children told to leave their schools, to live in a country the children have never been to."

And yet public awareness of the issue is extremely low, drowned out by the demand to reduce net migration at all costs.

Both Irene and her family made able spokespeople. Politicians from multiple parties were rallying to her cause. Rolling coverage was sustained for several days, until a YouGov poll put sympathy for Irene's case at 63 per cent.

This included majorities in every section of British society — even 50 per cent of Ukip voters. A crowdfunding campaign doubled its target within days, enabling a fighting fund for Irene's appeal. She may yet come home.

The affair contains valuable lessons for politicians hoping to regain popular support for migration. The serious ones understand that there is little benefit in trying to pick off "good" migrants at the expense of everyone else, or duck the issue — down that road lies Ed Miliband's "controls on immigration" souvenir mugs.

They also understand that anti-migrant sentiment stretches the length of these islands, and repeatedly producing data showing the benefits of migration (new migrants return £1.34 on every £1 invested in them, for instance) goes down like a lead balloon.

And when thousands of desperate people die at European borders every year, while thousands more experience humiliating treatment at the hands of border authorities, it would be utterly irresponsible to avoid them.

The anti-migrant machine is powerful, but small.

It may have captured parts of public opinion, but it does not own public opinion — and it can be rocked, as Irene's case demonstrates.
It consists of a relatively small number of the distant Establishment figures it claims to reject.

And the more people see that machine in action against ordinary, honest people like Irene Clennell, the more they will start to think differently about migrants and migration.

At the Annual Ukip Conference held this year in Birmingham, I spoke at the Gala dinner. My message was very simple: one of the reasons for Ukip's success was that we'd excluded extremists and focussed on organising and fighting elections. I warned that any change to this policy would damage the party beyond repair.

As I walked back to my seat, I was met by several angry young men, red in the face and mildly abusive, who all seemed to be obsessed with Islam and Tommy Robinson.

I wondered at that time if I'd just given my last Ukip speech. For 25 years of my life, Ukip has dominated my thoughts and actions. I have been determined in my desire to professionalise the party, to spread our message...

Lähtevätkö populistiset puoluejohtajat aina ovet paukkuen puolueestaan? Faragen ja Soinin tapauksissa yhdistävänä tekijänä on se, miten houkutellaan äänestäjiä laidasta laitaan ja sitten nämä äänestäjät eivät enää kelpaakaan kun menestys nousee hattuun. Soinilla oli hyvä mahdollisuus käyttää populismia hyvin ja todella ajaa äänestäjiensä asiaa, mutta petti äänestäjänsä.

Jos haluaa jonkun ryhmän kansasta kannattajakseen ja puolueensa jäseniksi, niin on myös ajettava haluamansa ryhmän asiaa. Ei tämä nyt tämän yksinkertaisempaa pitäisi olla. Mitä siitä seuraa jos haluaa, mutta ei aja? Se on jo nähty ja nyt on ainakin siitä kaksi esimerkkiä.

Farage syyttää puolueensa nykyistä puheenjohtajaa: "Paljon on valitettavasti muuttunut. Hänellä vaikuttaa olevan pakkomielle islamista, ei vain ääri-islamismista. Ukipia ei perustettu uskonnollista ristiretkeä varten."

Mielestäni Faragen ja Soinin rinnastaminen ei toimi. Farage luopui puheenjohtajuudesta kun sai päätavoitteensa maaliin. Hän erosi puolueesta yksin. Hän ei vetänyt mukanaan puolueesta puolta parlamenttiryhmää jonkin henkilökohtaisen hillotolpan takia. Faragella on todellisia ansioita puoluejohtajana.

Myös UKIP:in nykyinen puheenjohtaja on eronnut. Ei sentään puolueesta, vaan euroryhmästä, josta ei ole jäljellä kuin rauniot. UKIP voitti 24 paikkaa istuvaan parlamenttiin. EFDD:ssä heistä on UKIP lipun alla enää 8. Farage kuitenkin jatkaa ryhmän presidenttinä.
