Medioissa on ollut juttua siitä kuinka nykyajan lapset ovat ylipainoisia ja huonokuntoisia. Syy siihen on selvä. Suomen kansa lihoo ja laiskistuu koska ilmastonmuutos.

Vaikka ilmasto lämpenee keskimäärin, auringon valon määrä ei lisäänny. Arvioiden mukaan auringonsäteily vähenee ja pilvisyys lisääntyy ilmastonmuutoksen myötä etenkin talvella. Vähäluminen talvi huonontaa myös ulkoharrastusmahdollisuuksia. Etenkin Etelä- ja Länsi-Suomessa koetaan tulevaisuudessa yhä useammin vähälumisia ja lumettomia talvia, mikä osittain huonontaa talvilajien harrastusmahdollisuuksia. Tällä voi olla haitallisia terveysvaikutuksia, mikäli harrastetun liikunnan kokonaismäärä vähenee. Myös kaamosmasennukseen liittyvä makeannälkä voi lisätä ylipainon riskiä.

Ilmaston lämpeneminen on aito uhka ihmisen terveydelle

MAAPALLO on monimutkainen systeemi. Kestävyystutkimus ei voi tuottaa meille täyttä varmuutta tulevaisuudesta, ja joudumme tekemään päätöksiä osin epävarmoin tiedoin. Muutama tosiasia kannattaisi aina pitää mielessä. Ihmisen fysiologiset rajat tunnetaan eikä niistä voi tinkiä, ne ovat tosiasioita.

Ihmisen painosta viidesosa on proteiineja eli valkuaisaineita. Ihmisen proteiinit voivat denaturoitua, jos elimistön lämpötila nousee yli 42 asteeseen. Korkea yli 42 asteen kuume voi aiheuttaa ihmisen elimistössä pysyviä vaurioita. Lämpöhalvauksena tunnettu elimistön lämpeneminen yli 39–40 asteen aiheuttaa heikotusta, pahoinvointia ja vakavimmillaan tajunnan menetyksen. Nousu yli 45 asteen aiheuttaa kuolemanvaaran. Ihmisen biologisen kyvyn ylärajaksi säädellä elimistön lämpötilaa on esitetty 35 celsiusasteen märkälämpötilaa. Ilmaston lämpeneminen on aito uhka ihmisen fysiologisille rajoille.

Elämän rajat ovat luonnon meille antamat, ilmastonmuutoksen vaikutukset elimistöön ja terveyteen eivät ole neuvoteltavissa.

Ja kuitenkin ympäristön kylmyys on ollut ja tulee jatkossakin olemaan eurooppalaisille moninkertaisesti merkittävämpi kuolemaan johtanut tekijä kuin kuumuus.

Toistaiseksi hellejaksojen pitkittymisen vaikutuksista raskauteen ja sikiön terveyteen Pohjoismaissa on tutkittu vähän.

Ikääntyneet ja pitkäaikaissairaat kuuluvat helteellä riskiryhmiin, sillä heidän kehonsa sopeutuu kuumuuteen huonommin kuin muiden.

Myös pienet lapset ja raskaana olevat kuuluvat näihin riskiryhmiin, muistuttaa ylilääkäri Mikaela Grotenfelt-Enegren Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitokselta (THL).

Miesten ja naisten lämmösäätelykyvyssä on myös eroja: esimerkiksi miehet yleensä hikoilevat enemmän kuin naiset.

Riskit Suomessa vielä epäselvät

Vaikutukset sikiöön vaihtelevat tutkimuksen mukaan sen mukaan mihin raskauden vaiheeseen hellejakso ajoittuu.

– Hellejakso loppuraskauden aikana nostaa ennenaikaisten synnytysten riskiä ja kohtukuolemien riskiä. Ensimmäisen kolmanneksen aikana ajoittuvat hellejaksot, voivat lisätä esimerkiksi riskejä erilaisille kehityshäiriöille.

Erityisen suuria raskausajan riskit ovat kuumuudesta jo nykyisin kärsivissä maissa, painottaa Grotenfelt-Enegren.

– Ruotsista olevissa tutkimustuloksissa ei näkynyt yhtä selkeää yhteyttä lämpötilan nousun ja raskauskomplikaatioiden välillä, mutta sielläkin oli viitettä, että jonkinlaista yhteyttä voi olla näiden välillä, sanoo ylilääkäri.

Lisää tutkimusta esimerkiksi pohjoisen olosuhteiden muutoksista tarvitaan.

– Voidaan sanoa, että suurempia haittoja on aina, jos hellejakso kestää pidempään. Silloin meidän talotkin lämpenevät ja sisälämpötila nousee enemmän, arvioi Grotenfelt-Enegren.

Terveydenhuollon varautumistoimilla voidaan estää helteen haittoja. Raskaana olevia näissä varautumissuunnitelmissa ei ole THL:n ylilääkärin mukaan Suomessa tai Euroopassa riittävästi huomioitu.

– Ajattelisin, että myös ennaltaehkäisevässä terveydenhuollossa meidän neuvolapalveluissa voitaisiin paremmin kiinnittää huomiota hellejaksoihin ja erilaisiin suojautumiskeinoihin.

Silloin, kun olin moottorilentäjä, niin koulutuksessa painotettiin, ettei turbulenssiin pidä reagoida mitenkään, koska silloin kaikki voi mennä vituiksi. Se menee issekseen ohi.
