Home Secretary Theresa May's tough speech to Conservative Party conference

British Home Secretary Theresa May said high levels of immigration make a "cohesive society" impossible and had "close to zero" net economic benefit, in a speech seeking to establish her tough-on-immigration credentials amid a jostling for future leadership of the governing Conservative Party. 
 
While the UK should fulfil its "moral duty to help people in desperate need" there is "a limit to the amount of immigration any country can and should take," she said in a speech to members of the Conservative Party, who were meeting in the northwest city of Manchester for their main annual conference.

It is the centre-right party's first conference since Prime Minister David Cameron fired the starting gun on a leadership race earlier this year when he said he wouldn't run for another term in office.

He named Ms May as a potential successor, along with UK Treasury chief George Osborne and London Mayor Boris Johnson.

Ms May's message of tougher border controls come as Europe faces its worst migration crisis in decades, with hundreds of thousands of migrants fleeing war-torn countries like Syria for Europe. The UK has opted out of a common European asylum policy, which Ms May said wasn't the solution to the crisis.

She said Europe's immigration crisis "can only be resolved by nation states taking responsibility themselves — and protecting their own national borders."

Ms May said the arrival in Europe of hundreds of thousands of migrants had "led some people to say we need a new approach, a new European approach that would involve a common immigration and asylum policy.

"To those people, I have a very clear answer: Not in a thousand years," she said adding Britain would combine "hard-headed common sense with warm-hearted compassion."

Because when immigration is too high, when the pace of change is too fast, it's impossible to build a cohesive society. It's difficult for schools and hospitals and core infrastructure like housing and transport to cope. And we know that for people in low-paid jobs, wages are forced down even further while some people are forced out of work altogether.
