Britannian hallitus suunnittelee ottavansa uudet säännöt joiden mukaan maahanmuuttajien puolisoiden tulee osata edes auttavasti englantia. Aikaisemmin viisumiin on riittänyt se, että avioliitto on aito ja puolisot ovat kykeneviä elättämään itsenä. Jotta integratio tehostuisi on jatkossa osattava kieltä edes sen verran, että voi kaupassa asioida.

English rules tightened for immigrant partners

Ministers are bringing forward to the autumn measures requiring many immigrants marrying UK citizens to prove they have a command of English.

The measures, which Labour had planned to introduce in July 2011, will apply to partners coming to the UK from areas outside the EU, such as South Asia.

Home Secretary Theresa May said the move would "help promote integration".

Campaigners said they supported efforts to help immigrants learn English, but the plans were discriminatory.

Under the new rules, anyone from outside the EU applying for a visa to join their spouse or partner will have to prove they have a basic command of English, to help them get by in daily life, before their application is approved.

Anyone who hoped that the Lib Dems' presence in government would lead to a softening of the official rhetoric on immigration should give up just about now. Today, the Home Office announced that it is bringing forward to the autumn a piece of Labour legislation that will deny entry to people from outside the EU who marry British citizens but don't speak English.

Tories 'back down' over immigrants' English test

Home Secretary Theresa May was accused last night of watering down a Tory pledge to bar immigrants unless they can speak good English.

The promise was a central part of David Cameron's Election campaign. But it has now been disclosed that the families of asylum seekers allowed to settle in the UK will be exempt from the ban.

Labour MPs said the Conservatives had been forced to drop their hardline stance by their Liberal Democrat ­Coalition partners who support uncontrolled immigration.
