South Africa's energy crisis is teetering on the edge of a major political and economic crisis. Bogged down by inefficiency, ineptitude, and severe levels of corruption, the country's power utility Eskom has proven incapable of providing sufficient and reliable energy to the nation's grid, despite the domestic abundance of coal. Once one of the most reliable utilities in Africa, Eskom now exists in a state of constant emergency which is currently threatening to push the country into civil disarray and economic catastrophe.

Eskom desperately needs to service its poorly maintained power plants. On any given day, Eskom operates at about 50% capacity. Rolling blackouts, known locally as 'load shedding' have become a normal and expected part in day-to-day life in South Africa. "It even has predictable stages," Forbes reported in a recent excoriation of Eskom operations, "ranging from Stage 1 (reducing power for two hours at a time over a four-day period) through Stage 8 (reducing power for 12 hours out of every 24)."

Nyt siellä tuo stage 6 on käytännössä pysyvä tila ja talveksi uumoillaan stage 8 + isoilta energiaa kuluttavilta yrityksiltä voidaan nipistää 2 stagen verran, mihin juuri taannoin käsittääkseni ensimmäistä kertaa päädyttiin.

Tilanne heikkenee vain jatkuvasti ja nyt alkaa gepardihattujen keinot olemaan vähissä, kun paska todella iskee tuulettimeen. En usko, että mikään ulina ja valkoisten syyksi pistäminenkään enään menee täysin läpi, paitsi toki sille slummien massalle mikä ei mistään mitään tajua tai muutenkin jo elää jo nyt pääosin ilman sähköä.

Paria kaveriani oli Cape Townissa ihan normituristeina pari vuotta sitten.

Finnairi alkoi tarjota Johannesburgiin vähän yllättäen lentoja. Tiedän periaatteessa sen, että siellä on joku valkoinen/valkoisempi alue, mikä ei ole ihan niistä ghetto-dokkareista. Ei tosin ihan ole eka prioriteetti käydä tuolla. Pari päivää ja johonkin Windhoekkiin.

Lallitar oli siellä töissä 1995, jolloin Johannesburgissa ja Kapkaupungissa oli villin lännen meininki. Paikallisilla valkoisilla oli käsiaseet povitaskussa, ja paikallinen sekoitusväestö kävi aina vaan levottomammaksi. Jos ajoit ulos väärästä liittymästä ja päädyit hökkelikyliin, niin oli hyvät todennäköisyydet hiippakunnan vaihtamiselle.

Kapkaupunki on valoisan aikaan kohtuullisen turvallinen ja varsin hyvin hoidettu. Olin yllättynyt miten hyvässä kunnossa tieverkko ja yleinen siisteys oli alueilla missä liikuttiin, toki slummit jätettiin niin pitkälle välistä kuin mahdollista. Sen verran mitä niitä näki, ei kannustanut mitenkään niihin läheisempää tutustumista. Pimeällä ei kannata liikkua jo ihan pelkästää noiden hallittujen sähkäkatkojen takia, missä pistävät isot alueen aina täysin pimeäksi. Itse majailin tyttöystävällä, joka asuu ylemmän keskiluokan alueella Kenilworthissa ja matkat taittuivat lähes pelkästään autolla. Yksityismajoitus voi varmasti olla ihan turvallinen, toki riippuen sijainnista ja turvatoimista. Load sheddingistä johtuen jokaisen kävijän kannattaa ladata EskomSePush https://esp.info/ äppi, joka onkin varmaan kyseisen maan suosit.. tai ainakin käytetyin sovellus! 

Kapkaupunki on mielestä edelleen näkemisen arvoinen paikka, sillä alueen luonto on uskomattoman hieno. Meri on tosin jääkylmä aina Intian valtamereen asti, joka alkaa idässä about Cape Agulhasin kohdalla. Alueella on paljon todella ensiluokkaisia viinitiloja ja muutenkin näkemisen arvoisia paikkoja. Johannesburg on oman käsitykseni mukaan todella surkeassa jamassa nykyään ja on syytä välttää, jollei sieltä halua jatkaa esim. Krugeriin safarille tai johonkin naapurimaista.

Ainakin jos Kapkaupunkiin harkitsee menoa, mulle voi laittaa viestiä ja autan mielelläni. Jos en osaa vastata, voin aina kysyä sikäläiseltä tyttökaveriltani.

Etelä-Afrikan maavoimien komentaja on vierailulla Moskovassa, kertoivat venäläiset uutistoimistot maanantaina. Venäjän puolustusministeriön tietoja siteeraavien toimistojen mukaan kenraali Lawrence Mbathan johtama delegaatio on saapunut keskustelemaan "sotilasyhteistyöhön ja vuorovaikutukseen liittyvistä asioista".

Yhdysvallat on syyttänyt Etelä-Afrikkaa aseiden toimittamisesta Venäjälle. Yhdysvaltain Etelä-Afrikan suurlähettiläs Reuben Brigety sanoi torstaina Yhdysvaltojen uskovan, että venäläiseen rahtialukseen olisi lastattu aseita ja ammuksia Kapkaupungissa joulukuussa.

South Africa could become a "failed state" but has yet to reach that point, a senior official of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) has said.

The admission by ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula comes as South Africa experiences power cuts, known as load-shedding, of up to 10 hours a day.

"This load-shedding has just made a mess of our country," he told the BBC's HARDtalk programme.

The power cuts have worsened South Africa's economic crisis.

The country is also battling high levels of corruption, all of which has damaged confidence in the ANC government.

"If certain things are not resolved, we will become a failed state, but we are not journeying towards that direction," Mr Mbalula said in an exclusive interview with BBC HARDtalk's Stephen Sackur.

What is certain is that the sabotage at Unit 4 was not an isolated event.

In his eNCA interview and in excerpts from a new book, he painted a vivid picture of sophisticated "mafia" gangs with dozens of well-trained "soldiers", who were willing to kill anyone who threatened to clean up the coal industry, or to move towards renewable energy.

It is a picture that is immediately recognisable to many here.

"There's a lot of killing around. They put a gun to my head. They came to my house and threatened my family. The whole system is rotten, corrupted," said a local businessman who told us he had tried to supply parts to Eskom for years, but that the local cartels made it impossible to work honestly.

"These cartels are politically connected. They're above the law, basically," said the man, who asked us not to use his name for fear of being killed, and only agreed to speak to us at a secure location far from his hometown.

That request for anonymity is common in the province of Mpumalanga - the heart of South Africa's coal industry and a province that has earned a reputation for extreme lawlessness.

"Life is cheap here. You can hire a hitman for $400. People are just looting as much as they can," said an investigative journalist working with us and South Africa's Daily Maverick news website, who confirmed the businessman's account.

"This is a brutal province for anyone trying to expose the truth. It's sabotage at almost every stage of the process. And it's not just about criminality. The money... gets passed on to politicians to keep them in power, to keep them running elections, to keep palms greased," said the journalist, who also asked not to be named.

The ANC has been the governing party in Mpumulanga and nationwide since the country's first democratic elections in 1994 after it successfully led the struggle against white-minority rule.

"This is treasonous behaviour. The ANC is involved at every level. The villains are members of the ANC or associates of the ANC. It is involved so deeply that it doesn't know how to extricate itself. They are tipping us over towards that terrible situation of a 'failed state,'" said political commentator Justice Malala, noting there was a direct link between the looting and the near-constant power cuts now crippling South Africa.

Today, more than 80% of South Africa's electricity is generated by coal-fired power stations - an astonishing figure. As a result, the country is ranked as the world's 14th largest emitter of carbon dioxide, despite having only the 33rd biggest economy.

"Our electricity system is almost entirely based on digging coal out of the ground and burning it," acknowledged Crispian Olver, chair of the Presidential Climate Commission.

But that could be about to change. Perhaps dramatically.

A group of Western nations has agreed to an $8.5bn package of grants and loans known as the Just Energy Transition (JET) partnership, designed to help guide South Africa away from coal and towards renewables.

Under the terms of JET, the country could, in theory, achieve "net zero" carbon emissions by 2050, offering a blueprint for other developing nations looking to go green.

It is the inevitable result of the chaos inside Eskom, as its fleet of mostly aging power stations is hit by maintenance problems, sabotage, and corruption.

In his eNCA interview, soon after his poisoning, Mr De Ruyter accused the ANC of deliberately blocking the move towards renewables.

He said the ANC used Eskom like "a feeding trough" and that powerful politicians were blocking his attempts to tackle corruption.

Mr De Ruyter cited a private intelligence dossier - shared with the BBC by investigative journalists from the Daily Maverick - that named two senior ANC politicians as the heads of two of Mpumalanga's criminal cartels. And he said the government had brushed aside his concerns.

The draft regulations, published by Minister of Water Senzo Mchunu on 19 May, introduce race quotas for the allocation of water use licences, which are vital to the survival of businesses in sectors such as agriculture, forestry and mining.

Under the ANC's new water race quotas, applicants that use more than 250 000 m3 or withdraw more than a set minimum amount from streams need to meet strict racial quotas in order to get access to water – the single most critical resource required for life, livestock, agriculture and industry. Depending on the size of their water need, farmers or companies that have not "allocated" between 25% and 75% of its shares to what the regulations call "blacks," will be denied access to water.

The consequences will be particularly devastating for the farmers who feed us all. 60% of South Africa's water resources are currently used by agriculture to grow the food we all eat.

Here is a list of issues that experts said are hurting Eskom and preventing it from stopping load-shedding:

Political interference and a lack of political will to fix Eskom are at the root of the problems.
Poor employees and a lack of skills at all levels are behind most of the breakdowns and poor maintenance at Eskom's power plants.
Eskom defunded its engineering internship programmes which were needed to ensure junior technical staff received the necessary training to be productive. New employees are thrown in at the deep end, which causes problems.
Little or no action is taken against poor-performing employees. Employees are often on paid suspensions for months when action is taken because of serious misconduct.
Serious criminality in several of Eskom's operations created a situation where skilled workers chose to work elsewhere.
Eskom maintains aggressive affirmative action and transformation policies, preventing good staff members from being promoted to positions that will benefit the company.
Eskom is cutting the budget for important projects, including maintenance and refurbishments, which will worsen load-shedding.
Corrupt networks continue to exist at Eskom, with politically connected employees facilitating the corruption.
Eskom is forced to use suppliers that struggle to deliver equipment for maintenance and upkeep at power stations. It also significantly increases the price of products and services.

Suurin osa Etelä-Afrikan väestöstä on mustia, ja suurin osa mustista ei äänestä EFF:ää. Jos EFF:n kannattajat ryhtyisivät laajaan väkivaltaan, tappaminen tuskin rajoittuisi valkoisiin. EFF:n rotukommunistisesta näkökulmasta katsottuna eri mieltä olevat mustat ovat luopioita, rotupettureita, sisäinen vihollinen, jne. Sellaisten osa konflikteissa on aina vähintään yhtä hurja ja kurja kuin ulkoisen vihollisen.

Vaikka valkoisten hengellä ei olisi väliä, Julius Mamela liittolaisineen pitäisi laittaa vankilaan, ennen kuin maassa alkaa mustien keskinäinen sisällissota.
