Nykyajan inkvisitio: Cancel Culture

– Sananvapauteen vaikuttaa tällä hetkellä sosiaalinen paine, konformismi eli yksilön mukautuminen enemmistön mielipiteeseen, poliittinen korrektius sekä itsesensuuri. Jos eksyy kovin kauaksi mielipidekäytävän ulkopuolelle, siitä seuraa sosiaalisia sanktioita. Ja ne riittävät hiljentämään monet, koska tällaiset sanktiot heilauttavat ihmisen marginaaliin.

Jonka jälkeen vielä mainitaan mm. Charlie Hebdo ja poliittinen islam. Kirjailija ei ollut tuttu entuudestaan, mutta pitääpä ottaa jotain luvun alle. Se että kirjailija pääsi ääneen (mainituista aiheista) Ylellä herran vuonna 2021 toi hyvän mielen.

Ylipäätään, että on olemassa jokin Ruotsista omaksuttu 'opinionskorridor' on huolestuttavaa. Siellähän ei oteta edes keskusteluun aihetta tai näkökulmaa, joka on mielipidekäytävän ulkopuolella eli etukäteen sopiviksi määritellyistä keskustelunormeista liian kaukana.

Minusta tälläinen ei ole keskustelua laisinkaan vaan hymistelyä yhteisessä seurassa.

Leena Krohnin kirjat ovat melko lailla symbolistisia kertomuksia, siis ne, joita olen lukenut. Hieman raskaahkoja omasta mielestäni. Ehkä jossain on vielä toivoa, kun jotain pientä vastarintaa sentään on. Itse tosin kysyisin välittömästi, että kuinka paljon se oma mielipide saa erota etukäteen hyväksytyistä käytäväsäännöistä ennen kuin on kokonaan 'persona non grata'.

Leena Krohn on 74-vuotias ja Jari Sinkkonen 70-vuotias, eli näistä asioista voivat sanoa totuuden ääneen vain jo työelämästä pääosin eläköityneet ja elämänsä ehtoopuolella olevat henkilöt.

Muutoin totuudenpuhujia. työura olisi hyvin todennäköisesti ns.paketissa ja olisit todellakin "Persona non grata".

Muilla on Overton*, "sovelias mielipide-ikkuna" tai "sallitut keskustelunaiheet", kokonaisuus jota eri osapuolet yritettävät siirtää puoleen jos toiseen (Overtonissa ylös tai alas), ellei peräti karmien kokoa kokoa muuteta puoleen tai toiseen.

Ruotsalaisilla taas on "mielipidekäytävä", jonka liikuttelu tai koon muuttaminen on kyllä metafora-mielessäkin paljon vaikeampaa.

Saksalaisen urheilujohtajan Patrick Mosterin  suusta kuului television olympialaislähetyksessä rasistinen huudahdus. Tämä tapahtui 44,2 km kohdalla, kun Saksan Niklas Arndt kamppaili ajasta algerialaisen Azzedine Lagabin ja eritrealaisen Amanuel Ghebreigabhierin kanssa. Mikrofoni nappasi tastelun temmellyksessä kiihtyneen johtajan kannustuksen, joka oli tarkoitettu Arndtille: ,,Ota kiinni ne kamelipaimenet! Ota kiinni ne kamelipaimenet! Hop hop!" Saksan yleisradio ARD:n uutisselostaja reagoi välittömästi ja vasikoi: ,,Patrick Moster oli se, joka juuri päästi suustaan huudon, se oli täysin sopimatonta. Tällainen ei sovi urheiluun. Tämä on täysin ala-arvoista jne."

Patrick Moser on tietenkin jo tehnyt katumusharjoituksensa ja anellut nöyrästi tekoaan anteeksi. Urheiluliitto on kutsunut pahantekijän kuulusteluun ja jatkotoimenpiteitä pohditaan paraikaa...


Onkohan kamelipaimenien ammattiliitto jo pöyristellyt asiakkaidensa ilmeisen negatiivisen leimaamisen johdosta?

Woke-journalistinaiset vaativat, että Grimmin veljesten kaksisataa vuotta vanha satu on kirjoitettava uusiksi. Ehkä he itse voisivat kyhätä genderaineksista koolle uuden tarinan: Esim. musta ei liian lihava/laiha/kaunis/seksikäs nainen suutelee thaimaalaisen Ladyboyn hereille. Seitsemän kääpiötä koostuisivat homoseksuaalista, biseksuaalista, heteroseksuaalista, fluidseksuaalista, seksuaalisesta flexitaarista tai etsivästä kaikissa mahdollisissa ihonväreissä, sukupuolissa, ikä- ja tuloluokissa...


Asiantuntija Deanne Carsonin mielestä vauvoilta pitää kysyä lupa vaipan laittamiseen. Leslie Kern vaatii pilvenpiirtäjien/kerrostalojen kieltoa, sillä hän näkee niissä seksistisen symbolin, joka ejakuloi taivaalle.

Ajatella, että joidenkin psyyke ei kestä pusua ilman protokollaa. Olen myös lukenut tapauksesta, jossa naisasianainen oli tullut treffeillä mukavan miesoletetun suutelemaksi ja tätä asiaa vuositolkulla vatvottuaan oli päätynyt miespatriarkaatin alistamaksi.
Ymmärrän, että mielenterveys on ollut lujilla sotien aikaan, kun esimerkiksi on nähnyt naisten ja lasten uppoavan sulaan asfaltiiin ja syttyvän tuleen vuorotellen ja mikäli on myös itse joutunut kuolemanvaaran lisäksi jakamaan kuolemaa sekä kärsimään kaiken puutteesta.
Se, että nykyään ihmiset tuntuvat menevän rikki ns. pikkujutuista, on kovin kummallista. Tämä koskee erityisesti nuoria vihaisia naisia.

Eikös teidän salaliittohönöjen kuuluisi nähdä tuo suvakkijengi ikään kuin saman puolen porukaksi?  Samanlaisia hämmentäjiä ne on kuin tekin vaikka vähän eri motiiveilla ja keinoilla toimiikin. Saksan ja Itävallan yleisradio pöyristelee kilpaa keskenään kamelipaimenkeissistä. Chris Hedges on vasemmistolainen, mutta hänellä on mielestäni paljon viisautta ja mielipiteitä jotka eivät sovi nykyvasemmistolle.

Nyt hän on kirjoittanut cancel-kulttuurista artikkelin: "Cancel Culture, Where Liberalism Goes to Die", boldaukset minun.

"Jimmy Carter wrote of Campbell that he "tore down the walls that separated white and black Southerners."  And because the Black Panther organizer Fred Hampton was doing the same thing in Chicago, the FBI — which, along with the CIA, is the de facto ally of the liberal elites in their war against Trump and his supporters — assassinated him.

When the town Campbell lived in decided the Klan should not be permitted to have a float in the Fourth of July parade Campbell did not object, as long as the gas and electric company was also barred. It was not only white racists that inflicted suffering on the innocent and the vulnerable, but institutions that place the sanctity of profit before human life.

"People can't pay their gas and electric bills, the heat gets turned off and they freeze and sometimes die, especially if they are elderly," he said.  "This, too, is an act of terrorism."

"Theirs you could see and deal with, and if they broke the law, you could punish them," he said of the Klan. "But the larger culture that was, and still is, racist to the core is much more difficult to deal with and has a more sinister influence."

Campbell would have reminded us that the demonization of the Trump supporters who stormed the capital is a terrible mistake.  He would have reminded us that racial injustice will only be solved with economic justice. He would have called on us to reach out to those who do not think like us, do not speak like us, are ridiculed by polite society, but who suffer the same economic marginalization. He knew that the disparities of wealth, loss of status and hope for the future, coupled with prolonged social dislocation, generated the poisoned solidarity that give rise to groups such as the Klan or the Proud Boys.

We cannot heal wounds we refuse to acknowledge.

The Washington Post, which analyzed the public records of 125 defendants charged with taking part in the storming of the Capital on January 6, found that "nearly 60 percent of the people facing charges related to the Capitol riot showed signs of prior money troubles, including bankruptcies, notices of eviction or foreclosure, bad debts, or unpaid taxes over the past two decades."

"The group's bankruptcy rate — 18 percent — was nearly twice as high as that of the American public," the Post found. "A quarter of them had been sued for money owed to a creditor. And 1 in 5 of them faced losing their home at one point, according to court filings."

"A California man filed for bankruptcy one week before allegedly joining the attack, according to public records," the paper reported. "A Texas man was charged with entering the Capitol one month after his company was slapped with a nearly $2,000 state tax lien. Several young people charged in the attack came from families with histories of financial duress."

We must acknowledge the tragedy of these lives, while at the same time condemning racism, hate and the lust for violence.  We must grasp that our most perfidious enemy is not someone who is politically incorrect, even racist, but the corporations and a failed political and judicial system that callously sacrifices people, as well as the planet, on the altar of profit. 

Like Campbell, much of my own family comes from the rural working class, many espousing prejudices my father, a Presbyterian minister, regularly condemned from the pulpit. Through a combination of luck and scholarships to elite schools, I got out. They never did. My grandfather, intellectually gifted, was forced to drop out of high school his senior year when his sister's husband died. He had to work the farm to feed her children. If you are poor in America, you rarely get more than one chance. And many do not get one. He lost his.

The towns in Maine where my relatives come from have been devastated by the closures of mills and factories. There is little meaningful work. There is a smoldering anger caused by legitimate feelings of betrayal and entrapment. They live, like most working class Americans, lives of quiet desperation. This anger is often expressed in negative and destructive ways. But I have no right to dismiss them as irredeemable. "

"The cancel culture, a witch hunt by self-appointed moral arbiters of speech, has become the boutique activism of a liberal class that lacks the courage and the organizational skills to challenge the actual centers of power— the military-industrial complex, lethal militarized police, the prison system, Wall Street, Silicon Valley, the intelligence agencies that make us the most spied upon, watched, photographed and monitored population in human history, the fossil fuel industry, and a political and economic system captured by oligarchic power. 

It is much easier to turn from these overwhelming battles to take down hapless figures who make verbal gaffes, those who fail to speak in the approved language or embrace the approved attitudes of the liberal elites. These purity tests have reached absurd and self-defeating levels, including the inquisitional bloodlust by 150 staff members of The New York Times demanding that management, which had already investigated and dealt with what at most was poor judgment made by the veteran reporter Don McNeil when he repeated a racist slur in a discussion about race, force him out of the paper, which management reluctantly did. "

Um zu der zwingenden Schlussfolgerung zu gelangen: ,,Wir bitten daher, weiße Menschen von einer Bewerbung für diese Beratungsstelle abzusehen."

The Good Death—Cancel Culture and the Logic of Torture

Cancellation is a public execution, during which a person is pilloried and destroyed. But while we have become used to the cycle of manufactured outrage that preludes every cancellation, the desperate public apologies, and the devastating consequences for the people whose lives are ruined, we are often at a loss to know what we could do to stop this type of serial assault. Part of the solution is to gain as clear an understanding of the phenomenon as possible by probing its structure. Philosophical and historical scholarship on public executions and torture can help to illuminate the moral logic that drives the cycle of abuse. For both public shaming and cancellation are structured like public acts of torture, and their aims are disturbingly similar means of enforcing political or cultural conformity.

A public execution

It is unsettling to consider how similar today's public cancellations are to those public executions. Of the three elements listed by Spierenburg, the complicity of the condemned is the most fascinating. As Spierenburg argues, "In the eyes of the authorities the staging of executions achieved its most beautiful form of ultimate success" when the criminal repented and embraced his punishment. "For this his co-operation was required. He had to be convinced of the righteousness of his punishment ... Notably those who were going to die were expected to be penitent and convinced of the wrongness of their own acts and the righteousness of their death." The absence of such co-operation not only made the execution less perfect, but it also rendered it potentially counter-productive: a condemned man who refused to play the role of penitent might engage the sympathy of the public, especially if there were doubts surrounding their alleged guilt, and the whole spectacle might then turn against the executioners and the authorities, and trigger riots, as sometimes happened.

In our current climate of cancellation, the submissive assumption of guilt is performed through the humiliation of the public apology. This is not a coincidence: an apology functions like a confession—it implies acknowledgement of wrongdoing. Even (and especially) if the shamed or cancelled person is innocent of any wrongdoing, the apology is the sacrament that makes the accusation real after the fact. It is the seal that retrospectively authenticates the righteousness of the punitive process. It is the moment when the victim of the cancellation plays his part and willingly goes to his death. To apologize is to die the good death—the accused gives his persecutors the performance they want and need, and validates their worldview.

Yet the display of voluntary humiliation is not enough to make a good execution. The public spectacle of pain (which in cancellations is primarily the psychological pain of humiliation and ostracization), its toleration by society (indicated by the gleeful dissemination of the images of public humiliation), and the exemplary nature of the execution also play their part. To understand the full scope of the impact, we need to expand our frame of reference and approach cancellations as public executions of a very specific kind—they are a public form of torture. It is only when we look at cancellation as a form of torture that the full force of its violence becomes apparent.

Destroying the body

In The Body in Pain, an investigation of pain as a destructive force in human experience, Elaine Scarry argues that "torture consists of a primary physical act, the infliction of pain, and a primary verbal act, the interrogation. The first rarely occurs without the second." (...)

Of course, instances of public shaming or cancellation do not involve the infliction of physical pain—the physical body of the victim is not destroyed (although some shaming and cancellation certainly includes the threat of physical violence). Nevertheless, a very similar effect is obtained by destroying the victim's social world. (...)

This experience has been most eloquently described by Hannah Arendt in her analysis of The Origins of Totalitarianism. Arendt argues that inducing a state of loneliness in people has the effect of destroying all sense of community, reducing individuals to isolated atoms, and thereby preparing them, through abject fear, for totalitarian rule. As Arendt explains, "Totalitarian domination ... bases itself on loneliness, on the experience of not belonging to the world at all, which is among the most radical and desperate experiences of man." The function of public shaming and cancellation is to inflict loneliness—it cuts the victim off from the family of man. It makes him an abject untouchable and has as its only aim his total removal from society. This is achieved by publicizing the cancellation, which ensures that this person will lose his job, his livelihood, his social circle, and will almost certainly not find another job in the foreseeable future. In close analogy to physical torture, where everyday objects (a chair, the food one eats) and even the body itself are turned into hostile weapons, the shared world is turned into a hostile environment for the publicly shamed person, who is now shunned by everyone. The very people who were only recently friends and colleagues are now the weapons that inflict pain through their absence, confirming the victim's isolation.

In this way, the security a person feels within the human community is destroyed and the world is made hostile. It effectively reduces the limits of one's being to the limits of the body. Any person who has ever suffered severe public shame will acknowledge that the limits of one's body are a thin shell between oneself and a hostile environment.

Destroying the voice

This is why, in cases of cancellation, it is not the initial accusation or calling-out but the apology (which amounts to an admission of moral guilt) that is lethal. By apologizing to your tormentors, you surrender your voice and indicate that you will not bite the hand that throttles you. You have become docile. Furthermore, the public spectacle of humiliation and confession demonstrates to one's allies, close friends, and relatives what is in store for them should they incur the mob's wrath. Like the recorded screams of the tortured mentioned by Scarry or the public executions mentioned by Spierenburg, this is the violence of intimidation by example.

There is a bitter but valuable lesson here for those who face public shaming or cancellation. Whatever you do, and however tempting it may be, you should never, ever apologize. The only sensible response is defiance. This takes courage, and it may seem painful and torturous, but the situation is already painful and torturous, and apologies are unlikely to change that. The victim can at least reclaim or maintain some self-worth by biting back.

But in cases of shaming and cancellation, the apology never makes any difference at all: it is simply part of the punishment. Where restorative justice sees apologies as part of a constructive process towards rehabilitation, mobs use apologies as an instrument with which to inflict more pain. There is absolutely no sense of reciprocity, forgiveness, or closure.

Cancellation and shaming are insidious because they rob their victims of their proper voice. To have one's voice stolen in this way is a deeply traumatizing experience: it makes clear that nothing one says, not even speaking the obvious truth, will make any difference at all. This is perhaps the moment when the sense of loneliness is most profound and the victim feels most desperately lost.

Destroying truth

A significant consequence of these torture tactics is their contribution to the destruction of truth, which is part and parcel of the destruction of the social world, and which is to a considerable extent achieved by robbing victims of their voice. One of the reasons shamed victims are coerced into false or self-incriminating speech is that the mob needs to maintain a view of reality that is impervious to empirical testing. Reality and truth are decreed by ideology rather than established through the conventions of empirical research and a rational exchange of views. This is nowhere clearer than in debates about race (where the new-fangled and luridly racist concepts of "white supremacy" and "structural racism" trump all empirical evidence about the true and complex causes of racial inequality) and gender (where the concept of gender has swallowed up biological sex to the extent that even sexual dimorphism in humans is now dismissed as a mere social construct rather than a basic empirical fact).

This process has been successful at universities, where even tenured professors are now sufficiently scared of saying anything that might offend, even if it is established science or demonstrable fact. But when the voices of science and reason are silenced, totalitarian rule is in the ascendant. As Arendt explains, "The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (i.e., the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false (i.e., the standards of thought) no longer exist." Even those who privately know that they are professing ideological untruths also know that they ought not to say so out of fear for their livelihoods. It is not even clear anymore whom amongst one's colleagues and friends one can trust. The new truths are centrally dictated and the options are: conform or perish.

This is the human condition in a world of absolute relativity of facts and values (except its own, of course). It is a world in which nothing is certain (except the diktats of the mob), and where anything is possible (except the commonsensical and the empirically testable). It is a world in which lonely people (teachers, students, writers, and basically anyone who is terrified of the consequences of dissent or perceived "insensitivity") are made to live in an alternative reality where there is no more recourse to facts. It is a world governed by the only thing that remains when objective truth falls away: power.

The loneliness induced by the spectacle of public shaming and cancellation is central to establishing this ideologically determined universe. "What prepares men for totalitarian domination in the non-totalitarian world," writes Arendt, "is the fact that loneliness, once a borderline experience usually suffered in certain marginal social conditions like old age, has become an everyday experience." The spectacle of shaming is meant to strike fear in the hearts of the public and induce it to conform rather than say aloud what we know to be true. Like the bodies broken on the wheel or dangling from the gallows in preindustrial times, the faces and names of the shamed on social media are exposed as deterrents. This is what happens if you disobey, and it could happen to anyone at any time.

Destroying society

The walls have ears, and the social world is hostile. In this sense, arbitrariness is central to the tactic of destroying the social world. Everyone is a suspect and therefore a potential victim. Anyone could destroy anyone at any time with a tweet. Trust no one.

At the same time, however, the claim that cancel victims are arbitrarily selected is only partially true. There does seem to be a profile, or a set of profiles. Many victims of cancel culture were not known to the public at large before their public falls from grace. Their shame made them infamous. Furthermore, many victims have been well-meaning liberals who are targeted for what is often a very minor or insignificant pseudo-transgression: a joke that was ill-judged, a hasty tweet that turned out to be an unintended embarrassment, or the use of an innocuous word that only extremely sensitive people might construe as racist or sexist. In fact, many victims of cancellation have not done anything wrong at all.

Cancellation is a cowardly tactic. It is a form of mob justice that likes to prey on easy victims. In this respect, it again follows the structure of torture, which is equally cowardly. The power differential in torture is absolute. Torturers do not risk anything by inflicting torture. They run no risk of retaliation because the victim is helpless. The victims of cancellation and public shaming are similarly selected for their vulnerability. (...)

Mobs therefore select their victims carefully from the ranks of the impressionable—liberal-minded people who are already committed to progressive values, who are terrified of being called racist or sexist, and whose sense of identity to a considerable extent relies on their allegiance to inclusive and tolerant values. But these are the people least likely to be guilty of the moral crimes of which they stand accused. And this in turn explains why they so often have the perfectly understandable but wrong reflex of trying to apologize for any perceived wrongdoing. Even their moral goodness is cynically turned into a weapon of destruction. Being kind becomes painful.

This, again, is why it is the apology that kills: it is an act of moral self-inscription and, thereby, self-debasement. Like the good convict sticking to the script in a preindustrial execution, the performance of confession and remorse gives those in power what they want and need most: acquiescence. After that, the victim disappears from the social world, used up and discarded while the mob moves on to its next victim. The ideological beast is like Mammon: it continually needs to be fed to sustain itself. And so, one soul at a time, we are to be turned into the armies of the undead.

UK professor who called Jewish students 'pawns' of Israel fired over comments

A professor at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom was fired Friday over his past comments about Jews and Israel.

In remarks during a lecture in February, David Miller, a professor of political sociology, called Israel "a violent, racist, foreign regime engaged in ethnic cleansing" and referred to Jewish students who protested against his previous comments about Israel as Israel's "pawns."

There's "a real question of abuse here — of Jewish students on British campuses being used as political pawns by a violent, racist, foreign regime engaged in ethnic cleansing," Miller said.

In March, local police said they would investigate whether Miller's comments constituted a "potential hate crime" and the University of Bristol said an internal investigation into Miller's conduct was already underway.

In a statement Friday, the university said it did not find Miller's comments to be "unlawful speech" but that Miller was fired because he "did not meet the standards of behaviour we expect from our staff."

U.S.-Jewish Playwright: 'If You Have Any Criticism of Israel, You Are Not Allowed to Exist'

A left-wing playwright writes a play casting a critical eye over Israel's occupation and the settlement enterprise. Conservative groups launch a campaign demanding that a public reading be canceled. The event's organizers opt to remove themselves from the heart of the storm by capitulating to public pressure and canceling the reading, without ever having read the play themselves. Sound familiar?

That fate just befell two events that were set to take place in coming weeks at Manhattan's Center for Jewish History: a panel discussion about the 100th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, co-sponsored by the left-wing organization Jewish Voice for Peace; and the maiden reading of Dan Fishback's play "Rubble Rubble."

"While the programs themselves may have merit, they do not align with the mission of AJHS," the board of the American Jewish Historical Society announced laconically about two weeks ago.

"They canceled the event without even reading the play," an angry Fishback said in an interview with Haaretz from his New York home. "They couldn't read it, they have no access to it. It was only based on my political opinions."

There's no doubt about Fishback's political opinions. He's a declared left-wing activist; a proud supporter of the BDS movement, which advocates boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel; and a self-proclaimed anti-Zionist. And over the years, he has left a long paper trail of his views, making him an easy target for right-wing, American-Jewish organizations.

"My family taught me to critique Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, but we never considered the notion that Israel didn't have 'the right to exist,'" Fishback wrote in a long article on the popular website Slate in February 2016. "It wasn't until I was an adult that I finally grappled with that idea. Did any states have the right to exist? Did countries themselves have rights at all? Why do we condemn an unequal distribution of rights in all states except Israel? When I eventually did come out to my family as an anti-Zionist, it was probably more painful than telling them I was gay.

Lampinen oli kysynyt naisilta, keitä he ovat ja millä valtuuksilla he esittävät poistovaatimuksia. Esittäytymisten jälkeen vaihdettiin sanoja puolin ja toisin, mutta Lampisen mukaan ketään ei loukattu eikä haukuttu. Kimmo Lampinen pitää tapausta tyypillisenä "cancel-kulttuurin" ilmentymänä.

– Ilmoitin poistavani askit myynnistä, mikäli demokratian polkuja kuljetaan ja eduskunta sellaisen lain saattaa voimaan, Lampinen kertoo.

Keräilyesineet edustavat oman aikansa kulttuuria ja kuvastoa, ja juuri sen takia niitä keräillään. Lampinen pitää menneen ajan kuvastosta loukkaantumista turhana ja jopa historian vääristelynä.

Why is Hollywood still hiring this raging anti-Semite?

Every day, as dawn's rosy fingers reach through my window, I arise and check in with Twitter, to see what fresh hell awaits. Generally, by about 6:30, I've been made furious by the outrage du jour. But recently, I experienced more of a sense of bemusement than ire, as I took in Deadline's headline: "Mel Gibson in Talks to Direct Lethal Weapon 5."

Gibson is a well-known Jew-hater (anti-Semite is too mild). His prejudices are well documented. So my question is, what does a guy have to do these days to get put on Hollywood's no-fly list? I'm a character actor. I tend to take the jobs that come my way. But—and this hurts to write—you couldn't pay me enough to work with Mel Gibson.

If Gibson is welcomed back to direct the latest installment of this beloved franchise, it may be time to stop publishing think pieces about the power of "cancel culture." Because if he can continue to find big bucks and approbation in Hollywood, cancel culture simply does not exist.

Gibson's political beliefs are—as my father would say—somewhere to the right of Ramses (check out YouTube to see Gibson saluting Donald Trump at a UFC fight). He has said sexist things and yelled racist slurs, and that should have been enough for liberal Hollywood to cut him off. But his reported anti-Semitism has been more consistent, more open, and more egregious.

Yes, he has denied some of the stories of his anti-Semitism, like the time Winona Ryder said he asked her if she was an "oven dodger" at a party. Color me unconvinced. This is the man who directed and co-wrote The Passion of the Christ, a film that, in addition to earning Rotten Tomatoes' highest audience score for a film in Aramaic (as of this writing), is also a gleeful attack on my people, portraying Jews as eager Christ-killers, a libel that has been used as an excuse to torment and murder Jews for two millennia.

Don't agree with my take on the film? Okay, let's look at Gibson's arrest record.

In 2006, a fershnikit Gibson was pulled over on Malibu's Pacific Coast Highway and detained for drunk driving. In the back of the police car, Gibson reportedly went on an anti-Semitic tirade, prompted by his (correct) suspicion that his arresting officer was Jewish. "Fucking Jews," Gibson said. "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Gibson later claimed that, under the influence of alcohol, he had said things he didn't actually believe, but, seriously, in vino veritas—I myself once stood up at Nobu after a bit too much sake and announced, "I wish I were taller!"

How can Warner Bros. (a company founded by Jews) possibly consider hiring this man again? On its parent company's website I found a very laudable "inclusion" policy. It reads, in part, "WarnerMedia is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, as moral and business imperatives. It is essential that our workforce, content and creative partners reflect the diversity of our society and the world around us."

Beautiful. Really. But may I humbly suggest that in addition to a robust inclusion policy, Warner Bros. needs an equally robust exclusion policy? How about "Don't hire racist, anti-Semitic misogynists"? Free advice: Avoid this trifecta, Warner Bros. You want a triple threat? Don't hire Mel Gibson; search for the next Donald O'Connor!

And it's not just Warner Bros. that's wearing moral blinders. Earlier this year it was announced that Gibson will star in a John Wick origin series for Starz and Lionsgate Television. How did this guy become such a hot ticket again? Is it just that memories of his hate speech have faded, while Hollywood's recollection of his box-office pull remains?

It is inarguably true that the main targets of Gibson's prejudice are the Jews, but what boggles my mind is that Hollywood is also overlooking his profound misogyny and forays into anti-Black racism. I wish anti-Jewish hatred alone were enough to get him cast into the wilderness, but, hey, if it has to be because of his other prejudices, I'm okay with that. Let him take the hundreds of millions he's already earned in Hollywood and retire somewhere nice to contemplate his life choices. I hear the Judean Hills are lovely this time of year.

I write this knowing that it's more likely to lead to a boycott by Warner Bros. of Joshua Malina than of Mel Gibson. But if that's the result, so be it. I've had a nice career, baruch Hashem. It would be great if higher-profile executives, producers, and actors would also take a stand. Then I could believe in this cancel culture I keep reading so much about. And I could also believe that Jews do, in fact, count.
