Popular Christian preacher Victor Ajisafe detained after anti-Muslim diatribe goes viral on social media, triggering countrywide condemnation

A Nigerian pastor has been arrested in Sierra Leone after recordings of a sermon targeting Muslims went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage.

In an address to his congregation on Saturday, Victor Ajisafe, founder and leader of one of the country's largest churches, called Islam a "violent religion of lies and deceit" and said Muslims have been responsible for "every terrorist act in the history of the world". Sierra Leone's population is roughly 78% Muslim, according to a 2015 Pew Research Center estimate.

Audio and video recordings of the sermon appeared online within three days, and were met with immediate and near-universal condemnation by both Muslim and Christian Sierra Leoneans. Ajisafe was arrested on Tuesday, but has not yet been charged.

"Everyone is very upset by his message," said MB Kamara, head of Sierra Leone's criminal investigations department. "We are a very religiously tolerant country and no one ever worries whether someone is Muslim or Christian. We all have lived peacefully for generations, and no one wants that disrupted."

An initial press release from the social welfare ministry said Ajisafe was being held for his own protection. Kamara said Ajisafe would be held until a charge against him could be determined.

Sierra Leone does not have legislation devoted specifically to hate speech, but incitement is prohibited under common law. The attorney general, Joseph Kamara, is expected to make a decision on Thursday.

All six branches of Ajisafe's Sanctuary Praise Church, one of Sierra Leone's largest Evangelical communities, have been indefinitely shut down by the social welfare ministry pending further investigations.

Police have been dispatched to each location to prevent anyone from entering after CID officials claimed that "credible information" indicated the existence of a plot to burn down the church's Freetown headquarters.

Ibrahim Tommy, director of the civil society group Center for Accountability and the Rule of Law, said he was worried that banning people from Ajisafe's church may constitute a violation of people's right to free assembly.

"It's completely wrong what he said, and in some ways even criminal," Tommy said. "He should be held fully accountable, but I don't think that the government should shut down a whole church and disband its congregation just because of one person. People have the right to worship where they please, and we're venturing into dangerous territory by limiting that right, even temporarily.

"Besides, who says just because some hateful comments were said that suddenly every Muslim in the country is going to jump for an opportunity to destroy the man? By assuming so, the government is just reinforcing that stupid narrative about Muslims the pastor put out in the first place."

Members of the Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone have condemned Ajisafe's statements. The council's secretary general, Reverend Dr Usman Jesse Fornah, said Sierra Leone's Christians have lived "a peaceful coexistence with Muslims and want it to continue".

Saudi-Arabia aikoo kieltää seksuaalisen häirinnän – harkinnassa raipparangaistus

Neljä viidestä saudinaisesta on kokenut seksuaalista häirintää, kertoo Arab News -lehti.

Saudi-Arabia aikoo tehdä seksuaalisesta häirinnästä rangaistavaa. Kuningas Salman on määrännyt sisäministeriön valmistelemaan lain, jonka tulee astua voimaan 60 päivän sisällä.

Rangaistukseksi harkitaan vankeustuomiota tai raipparangaistusta, saudiarabialainen Arab News -lehti kertoo.

Kuninkaan asetuksen mukaan seksuaalinen häirintä uhkaa naisia ja perheitä ja on islamin periaatteiden vastaista.

Neljä viidestä 18–48-vuotiaasta saudinaisesta sanoi kokeneensa seksuaalista ahdistelua vuonna 2014 tehdyssä tutkimuksessa, Arab News -lehti kertoo.

Vanhoillinen Saudi-Arabia antoi tiistaina naisille luvan ajaa autoa ensi vuoden heinäkuusta lähtien. Naisilla on kuitenkin yhä miesholhoaja, ja lainsäädäntö rajoittaa heidän elämäänsä monin tavoin.

Ajo-oikeuspäätös liittyy laajaan uudistusohjelmaan, jonka avulla Saudi-Arabia yrittää saada naisia osallistumaan entistä enemmän työelämään. Saudi-Arabia yrittää monipuolistaa öljyn tuotannosta riippuvaista talouttaan.

Egypt 'hunting down' gays, conducting forced anal exams

Six Egyptian men arrested for "promoting sexual deviancy" and "debauchery" on social media will be subjected to anal examinations ahead of their October 1 trial, Amnesty International said today.

Their arrest is part of a wider crackdown against homosexuality that started last week when a group of people were seen raising a rainbow flag at a concert, a rare public show of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights in the conservative Muslim country.

At least 11 people have since been arrested, Amnesty said, and one man has been sentenced to six years in jail after local media launched a highly critical campaign against those who raised the rainbow flag at a Mashrou' Leila concert, a popular Lebanese alternative rock band whose lead singer is openly gay.

Amnesty said the Forensic Medical Authority was due to subject the six men to anal examinations to determine whether they have had homosexual sex.

Judicial sources said any defendant accused of "debauchery" or "sexual deviancy", a euphemism for homosexuality in Egypt, is subjected to a medical examination based on an order from the Public Prosecutor.

"Allegations of torturing or insulting those medically examined are lies not worth responding to. The examinations are carried out by a forensic doctor who swore to respect his profession and its ethics," one judicial source said.

Amnesty said such examinations violate the prohibition of torture and other ill-treatment under international law.

"The fact that Egypt's Public Prosecutor is prioritising hunting down people based on their perceived sexual orientation is utterly deplorable. These men should be released immediately and unconditionally — not put on trial," said Najia Bounaim, North Africa Campaigns Director at Amnesty International.

"Forced anal examinations are abhorrent and amount to torture. The Egyptian authorities have an appalling track record of using invasive physical tests which amount to torture against detainees in their custody. All plans to carry out such tests on these men must be stopped immediately."

Egypt's Muslim religious establishment is voicing its support for the government's moves against homosexuals.

"Al Azhar will stand against calls for sexual perversion the same way it has stood against extremist groups," a preacher at the 1,000-year-old seat of Sunni Muslim learning said in his Friday prayers sermon.

Although homosexuality is not specifically outlawed in Egypt, it is a conservative society and discrimination is rife. Gay men are frequently arrested and typically charged with debauchery, immorality or blasphemy.

The largest crackdown on homosexuals took place in 2001, when police raided a floating disco called the Queen Boat. Fifty-two men were tried in the case.

Kyseessä on Gulfnews -uutissivuston mukaan jo toinen onnettomuus, jossa osallisena on naiskuljettaja. Naiset eivät kuitenkaan saisi vielä maassa virallisesti autoja ajaa.

Viime maanantaina nainen kolaroi liikenteessä kuorma-auton kanssa. Nainen loukkaantui vakavasti ja kyydissä ollut 13-vuotias lapsi kuoli.

As these cases mount up, the damage to Dubai's reputation will grow.

The government there needs to invest in a five star justice system to match its hotels or see its tourist trade suffer.

Juuri tämä on arabimaissa ja afrikassa juuri ongelmana: viranomaiset ovat yhtä suuria roistoja suurin osa muustakin porukasta - ellei jopa pahempia. Omien matkojeni aikana näihin maihin omaksuin käytännön välttää poliiseja, miliisejä, santarmeja - ja mitä kaikkia niitä onkaan - mahdollisuuksien mukaan. Ne useinkin pidättävät turistin jos minkä tekaistun syytteen nojalla ja jos oikein vähällä selviää, niin joutuu vain hakatuksi, raiskatuksi ja munasilleen ryöstetyksi putkassa.

Ja minutkin on yritetty pidättää tekaistun syytteen nojalla kerran, mutta tietäen seuraukset onnistuin jujuttamaan pidätystä yrittänyttä santarmia ja pääsin pakenemaan. Eksoottista ja ihanaa elämää, se täytyy myöntää.

Vaikka saudinaiset pääsevätkin ensi kesästä alkaen auton rattiin, on ihmisten ajatusmaailman muuttamisessa vielä tehtävää.

Saudi-Arabia ilmoitti hiljattain päästävänsä naiset ensimmäistä kertaa auton rattiin. Tähän asti autoilu on ollut kiellettyä saudinaisilta, mutta lakimuutos astuu voimaan ensi kesänä.

Faisal BaDughaish ajatteli, että olisi hyvä idea, jos hänen vaimonsa saisi jo nyt kerrytettyä hieman kokemusta ratin takana. He suuntasivat autiolle parkkipaikalle, jossa BaDughaish opetti vaimolleen autoilun perusteita. Hän julkaisi Twitterissä hyväntuulisen kuvan, jossa hän itse istuu matkustajan paikalla vaimon ajaessa autoa.

Besides, whenever sectarian incidents take place, the Church issues statements which do not reflect how outraged Christians really are.

The frequency of these attacks is quite alarming. In the past, there was some sort of public resentment for attacking churches. But when they become frequent, people will just get used to it.

Keski-Aasiassa sijaitsevan Tadžikistanin viranomaiset sanovat laatineensa erityisen rekisterin homo- ja lesbokansalaisistaan. Asiasta kertoo Tadžikistanin valtionsyyttäjäviraston julkaisema lehti Zakonnost.

Lehden mukaan rekisterissä on 319 homoa ja 48 lesboa. Listan laatiminen on seurausta maassa viime vuonna aloitetuista"Moraali" ja "Puhdistus" -nimisistä operaatioista, kirjoittaa Zakonnost.

Lehden mukaan rekisterin laatimista edelsi seksuaalivähemmistöjen yhteisöjä koskeva tutkimus.

Ihmisoikeusaktivistit ovat jo aiemmin olleet huolissaan seksuaalivähemmistöjen syrjinnästä autoritaarisessa Tadžikistanissa.

Testeistä ei ole kerrottu tarkemmin

Lehti ei kerro minkälaisia testejä rekisteröidyille ihmisille aiotaan tehdä, mutta sanoo, että niitä tarvitaan "sukupuolitautien leviämisen ehkäisemiseksi".

Tadžikistan on muslimienemmistöinen maa, jota on johtanut vuodesta 1992 yksinvaltainen Emomalii Rahmon.

A hard-line Saudi preacher has claimed women are to blame for their own rapes and are the 'cause of harassment and adultery'.

Ahmed Bin Saad Al Qarni delivered his abhorrent sermon on Twitter where he claimed 'women instigate men to rape and assault them'.

In one video he posted online, Al Qarni claimed 'look at the woman in this video, she made the men go mad. Don't blame men.'

According to StepFeed.com, the cleric said: 'If he rapes her, she'll come home crying over her dignity. I swear to God, women are the cause of harassment and adultery. Look at the woman in this video, she's the one who stopped the man driving the vehicle, and she's the one who got into the car with him.'

He continued: 'A woman who leaves her house wearing make-up and perfume is an adulteress. A good woman who's wearing a kitchen apron will never leave her house looking like that. Don't blame men.'

This controversy comes days after Saudi officials cancelled a fundraising concert for children with cancer by an Egyptian female singer called Sherine, who is know for her rags-to-riches story.

The General Entertainment Authority said the concert was cancelled because the event's organizer failed to apply for a license to hold such an event.

However, conservatives in Saudi Arabia had launched a Twitter campaign against the concert.

The kingdom has loosened the reins on fun after a two-decade-long ban on concerts, but so far only for male singers.

Under the kingdom's strict dress code, women must wear long, loose robes in public. Most cover their hair and face too.

Ajattelin tuota ihan samaa, että mahtoiko imaami ajatella ollenkaan mitä tuo kertoo muslimimiehistä kun esimerkiksi suurimmalle osalle eurooppalaisista naisten paljastavakaan pukeutuminen ei tuota mitään raiskauspakkoa.

Egyptin aavikkoaammuskelussa kuoli yli 50 ihmistä

Egyptin länsiosassa perjantaina käydyn tulitaistelun uhriluku on noussut yli 50 ihmiseen.

Yli 50 egyptiläistä poliisia ja varusmiestä kuoli ja kuusi haavoittui perjantaina tulitaistelussa. Joukot joutuivat väijytykseen aavikkoisella alueella lähellä Bahariyan keidasta, kun ne olivat toteuttamassa operaatiota islamistitaistelijoita vastaan.

Egyptiläisjoukot olivat iskemässä aavikolla paikkaan, jossa oletettiin piileskelevän islamistisia taistelijoita.

Mikään ryhmä ei ole toistaiseksi tunnustanut iskua, mutta Egyptissä toimii useita islamistisia kapinallisryhmiä, esimerkiksi Isisin Egyptin haara.

Brittimiestä uhkaa kolmen vuoden vankeustuomio Dubaissa. Häntä syytetään epäsiveellisestä käytöksestä, koska hän kosketti toista miestä baarissa.

BRITTIMIES ON saanut kolmen kuukauden vankeustuomion Dubaissa, koska hän kosketti toista miestä baarissa.

Tuomio on kuitenkin odotettua lievempi. Vielä lokakuun alussa miehen pelättiin saavan kolmen vuoden vankeustuomion epäsiveellisestä käytöksestä.

Baarissa hipaistun miehen uskottiin peruneen vaatimuksensa brittimiehen asettamisesta oikeudelliseen vastuuseen teostaan, kertoo brittimiestä avustava Detained in Dubai -järjestö. Sunnuntaina järjestö kertoi miehen saaneen tuomion siitä huolimatta.

VANKEUSTUOMIOON johtanut välikohtaus sattui heinäkuussa Dubaissa Arabiemiraateissa. Tuomitun miehen puolustuksen mukaan hän hipaisi toista miestä vahingossa, koska yritti estää juomansa läikkymisen.

Detained in Dubai -järjestön mukaan brittimies kokee itsensä "petetyksi ja järjestelmän hyväksikäyttämäksi". Hänen mielestään kaikkia todistajanlausuntoja ei ole otettu huomioon tapausta käsiteltäessä.

Järjestö on kertonut miehen kärsineen merkittävästi tapauksen vuoksi. Sen mukaan mies on menettänyt työpaikkansa ja hänellä on vaikeuksia maksaa oikeudenkäyntikulujaan.
