Venezuelan police crushed and chopped up nearly 2,000 shotguns and pistols in a Caracas city square on Wednesday, as the new interior minister relaunched a long-stalled gun control campaign in one of the world's most crime-ridden countries.

Interior Minister Nestor Reverol said the event marked the renewal of efforts to disarm Venezuelans, through a combination of seizures and a voluntary program to swap guns for electrical goods.

Venezuela has the world's second highest murder rate and the street gangs that plague its poor neighborhoods have become increasingly heavily armed in recent years, at a time when a deep recession has reduced resources available to police.

Gangs often get weapons from the police, either by stealing them or buying them from corrupt officers, experts say.

Saksassa 22-vuotiaalla afgaaniläpsyttelijällä oli niin kovat paineet, että käytti vastaanottokeskuksessa 4-vuotiasta poikaa seksuaalisesti hyväkseen. Hyväksikäyttö tapahtui toimistosärmien eli ns. "kubiikkelin" suojissa. Lisäsuojana oli 29-vuotias läpsyttelijäkaveri, joka oli vahdissa kubiikkelin ulkopuolella ja oli uhkaillut 4-vuotiaan 8-vuotiasta isoveljeä puukolla.

Afganistanilaismies raiskasi 4-vuotiaan irakilaispojan oraalisesti saksalaisen vastaanottokeskuksen wc-kopissa toisen afgaanin pitäessä ovella vahtia.

Renkaanviiltelijä kuoli omaan veitseensä

Ruotsissa alunperin henkirikokseksi luultu tapaus on osoittautumassa tapaturmaksi. Poliisin teknisen tutkimuksen mukaan vainajana löydetty mies oli ollut viiltelemässä mattoveitsellä autojen renkaita, kun yksi niistä räjähti ja singautti terän päin miestä itseään. Terä osui elintärkeisiin sisäelimiin, ja mies kuoli verenhukkaan. Uhri oli poliisin mukaan viisissäkymmenissä. Tapaus sattui Nynäshamnin pohjoispuolelle sijaitsevassa Ösmossa.

Hälytys annettiin hieman kello yhden jälkeen yöllä. Palokunta taisteli liekkimerta vastaan suuroperaation voimin ja onnistui estämään tulipalon leviämisen muihin rakennuksiin.

Viranomaiset arvioivat, että tulipalosta aiheutui noin 100  000 euron vahingot.

Palon syttymissyy ei toistaiseksi ole selvillä.

Singapore detains two over intention to join ISIS in Syria

Two Singaporeans who the government says intended to travel to Syria to fight for ISIS have been detained under a colonial-era law that allows suspects to be held without trial.

Singapore has been on heightened vigilance since Indonesian police arrested a group of men they believed were plotting a rocket attack on the wealthy city-state with the help of a ISIS militant.

A major financial centre and the most westernised society in Southeast Asia, multi-ethnic Singapore is increasingly seen as a target for radicalised militants, authorities say.

Rosli bin Hamzah, a 50-year-old car washer, and Mohamed Omar bin Mahadi, a 33-year-old waste truck driver, received two-year detention orders this month, the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement.

Both had been radicalised, the ministry said, adding they were prepared to die as martyrs in Syria.

Singapore, which has not suffered a militant attack in decades, deploys extensive surveillance and is largely seen as one of the safest countries in the world. But some critics say security comes with a cost to civil liberties.

The Internal Security Act, under which the two were held, has been criticised by rights groups for allowing detention without trial.

Authorities have detained or repatriated dozens of people in the past year, most of them migrant Bangladeshi workers, for suspected links to militant fund-raising or other "terrorism-related activities".

Canadian man's bomb did not fully detonate before police shot him: report

A homemade bomb set off last week by a Canadian man who was apparently inspired by Islamic State, failed to fully detonate, a senior police official told the National Post newspaper on Saturday.

While there was a blast in the back seat of a taxi in Strathroy, Ontario, as police closed in, it came from the detonators, and explosive material did not go off, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) deputy commissioner Mike Cabana said.

The RCMP could not immediately be reached for comment on the newspaper report.

Aaron Driver, 24, was shot dead by police on Aug. 10 and the taxi company in the small town said the driver sustained only minor injuries in the blast.

Cabana did not go into further detail on the bomb. He said forensic investigation was still underway. The target of what police have said was an attack plotted by Driver was unclear.

Driver, who also used the alias Harun Abdurahman, was arrested last year for openly supporting Islamic State on social media, but was never charged with a crime. Islamic State militants control parts of Iraq and Syria and they have supporters and sympathizers around the world who have carried out attacks on civilians in several countries.

In February, Driver was placed on a peace bond, a court order that restricted his movements. It required he stay away from social media and computers and not have contact with Islamic State or similar groups.

The RCMP has said officers sought out Driver on Aug. 10 after a tip from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation that morning, which included a "martyrdom video."

Cabana said police identified Driver from the video in part through his choice of balaclava.

The incident called into question Canada's capabilities to combat extremism and increased calls for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to abandon his plan to scale back a 2015 law that gave increased powers to police and intelligence agents.

Fresh evidence is emerging that refugees stranded in camps across Greece are falling victim to rising levels of vice peddled by mafia gangs who see the entrapped migrants as perfect prey for prostitution, drug trafficking and human smuggling.

Details of the alarming conditions present in many of the facilities comes as the Greek government – facing criticism after the Observer's exposé of sexual abuse in camps last week – announced urgent measures to deal with the crisis. A further four refugee centres, it said, would be set up in a bid to improve severe overcrowding, a major source of tensions in the camps.

Aid workers say an estimated 58,000 migrants and asylum seekers in Greece are increasingly being targeted by Greek and Albanian mafias. Tales of criminals infiltrating camps to recruit vulnerable women and men are legion.
