Islamophobia: What ISIS Really Wants

On June 3, Muhammad Ali passed away. An unparalleled boxing champion, Ali was also an ambassador for tolerant Islam. A few days after his death, Omar Mateen took over U.S. headlines instead, reportedly pledging allegiance to ISIS in a last-minute phone call. Ali was an embodiment of the type of Muslims that ISIS categorically refutes, but the Orlando shooting, along with previous and subsequent terrorist attacks, have benefited both the "America first" movement currently led by Donald Trump and, in turn, ISIS.

For Trump, the shooting provided a new platform for his controversial statements regarding a ban on Muslim immigrants from entering the United States. Only a few hours after the Orlando shooting, Trump took to twitter, claiming that he had been "correct" on radical Islamic terrorism. The attack also strengthened the ISIS brand. Although no evidence has yet emerged directly connecting the shooter to the militant organization before the attack, ISIS has claimed responsibility. This attack and subsequent attacks in its name have proved a welcome way for the group to save face as it loses ground in Iraq to local Iraqi forces.

Omar Mateen's actions fed into the 'clash of civilizations' discourse that ISIS has relied on to increase its recruiting capabilities with youth disaffected and alienated from Western culture, which they see as having rejected them. Consequently, public expressions of Islamophobia help incubate online and homegrown radicalization. It is clear that the type of Islamophobia in reaction to terrorist attacks is one of the broader, long-term goals behind ISIS's support and perpetration of attacks like the Orlando massacre.

Barack Obama orders US bombing of Islamic State in Libya

The US military launched the first of what is expected to be a sustained series of air strikes in Libya targeting Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant's stronghold of Sirte.

Strikes were authorised by President Barack Obama after being requested by the United Nations-backed government in Libya.

The last US bombing in Libya was in February and the intervention marked its first to support Libyan forces in their battle against Isil in Sirte.

It was likely to mark the start of a more intense US involvement in Libya, opening a new and more persistent front against Isil.

Mä satuin tänään muistamaan kymmenen vuotta vanhan videon, missä Irakin al-Qaidalla on ihan eri jutut kuin nykyään. Tää taisi olla sitä aikaa kun se oli rehellisimmillään, koska fundamentalismi ei ole sen vahvin puoli. Uskontulkinnat vaihtuvat tiuhempaan tahtiin kuin suomalaisen miehen sukat.

Kumminkaan tältä ei ideat lopu ja Syyrian sota on lähinnä väline, koska ei se ennen suunnitellut kalifaattia vaan homman nimi oli Irak irakilaisille ja muiden asentama hallinto pois. Sitä se meinasi jo Saddamin aikaan eikä tuontidemokratia ole miellyttänyt yhtään enempää.

Näillä on ihan jonkin verran vihamielisyyttä varastossa ulkopuolisien sekaantujien takia viimeisen sadan vuoden ajalta, joten niistä ei ihan helposti eroon pääse.

British troops are being sent to Saudi Arabia to begin training Syrian rebels, as the UK widens its efforts to combat Islamic State extremists.

Troops will soon be deployed to a desert base in the north of the country to teach rebel volunteers basic infantry skills as part of a US-led training programme.

The mission will mean Britain is training Syrian moderate rebel fighters in four countries, including Turkey, Qatar and Jordan. Overall 85 British troops are carrying out the mission, which Lord Richards, the former chief of the defence staff, has called "woefully insufficient".


The first team sent to Saudi Arabia will only include around a dozen British military personnel, to work alongside American, Saudi and French colleagues.

David Cameron is likely to increase the British force however, with the Saudi camp expected to become the biggest of the training missions around the region.

Training moderate Syrian rebels, and training Kurdish and Iraqi forces battling Isil are key to defeating the self-styled Caliphate, the Prime Minister has said.

"Of course if we are going to succeed in defeating Isil either in Iraq or in Syria there will need to be boots on the ground but they should be Iraqi boots, Syrian boots," he said earlier this week.

The Saudi camp to train members of the Free Syrian Army was agreed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, interior minister, during a visit to Washington last year.

The FSA is considered the most moderate of factions fighting Bashar al-Assad's government, but has been increasingly sidelined on the battlefield by more extremist Islamist factions. It has also been riven by leadership disputes.

American-led attempts to train up moderates to hold ground against Isil are months behind track because of the difficulty of finding groups which were not linked to the extremists.

Only 65 rebels had received military training by the start of this month, the US Defence Secretary has admitted. Plans had originally said 3,000 could be trained by the end of the year. In the meantime thousands of foreign fighters have flocked to Isil.

Barack Obama has acknowledged the effort is off track and has ordered his commanders to step up the mission.

I hardly meet anyone who criticizes US foreign policy or who even has any idea about 5% of what it even is. Americans just don't care. As long as there are no body bags coming home, the Foggy Bottom sociopaths are free to bomb and kill and cause chaos and mayhem anywhere on the globe, and that's exactly what they do most of the time.

And if we are bombing and killing people somewhere on Earth, Newton's Third Law bounces up to play, and one might expect some blowback, which would come in the form of body bags. Egyptian military kills leader of Islamic State group in Sinai

The military said on its Facebook page that a series of air strikes near Arish, the largest town on the Sinai peninsula, had also killed 45 other IS group fighters.

There was no immediate confirmation from the Sinai Province militants, the IS group's offshoot in the peninsula that borders Israel, the Gaza Strip and the Suez Canal.

"This successful operation confirms the pledges of the armed forces to avenge their martyrs and ... pursue all the terrorist elements and leaders wherever they are found until Egypt and its great people enjoy security and stability," the military said.

Hundreds of soldiers and policemen have been killed by an insurgency that began in mid-2013, when then-army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ousted Islamist President Mohamed Mursi following mass protests.

Will US strikes on Daesh deepen Libya divisions?

The United States has opened a new front in its campaign against the Daesh terror group, launching air strikes to support Libyan forces battling to oust the extremists from Sirte.

But the strikes risk exacerbating Libya's deep political divides.

Daesh 'weakening' in Mosul, says Pentagon

WASHINGTON: Daesh militants inside the group's Iraqi stronghold of Mosul are "weakening" and showing signs of frustration ahead of a battle to recapture the city, a US military official said on Wednesday.

Iraqi and Kurdish forces, backed by US-led coalition trainers and air power, have for months been edging towards Mosul, Iraq's second city and home to two million people.

The Daesh group has controlled it since June 2014.

"We see them weakening inside Mosul," said Colonel Chris Garver, a coalition spokesman. "We do see some indications that morale is lower."

For instance, senior commanders are executing subordinates for "failure on the battlefield," Garver said, adding that Daesh leaders are "not happy with where they are in Mosul."

Militants, concerned that city residents are communicating with Iraqi security forces, have started cutting off internet access.

The same thing happened in Fallujah and Ramadi before each of those cities was recaptured, Garver said.

Still, he cautioned, the eventual fight for Mosul — which is expected to begin in the coming months — will not be easy.

"We still anticipate that somewhere between 5,000 or so fighters are inside Mosul," Garver said. "We're still anticipating a tough fight."

On Wednesday, Britian said coalition war planes bombed one of former Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein's palaces which was being used as a training base by the Daesh militant group.

The palace in Mosul was attacked in a joint operation by the US-led coalition on Monday, with British Tornado jets targeting the headquarters buildings and a security centre. The site also contained "a number of more discreet outbuildings used for command and control, training, internal security and repression," it said.

On Sunday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al Abadi held talks in Baghdad with America's top military officer, discussing plans to oust the Daesh group from second city Mosul, his office said.

Abadi and General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, discussed boosting "cooperation between the two countries in the fields of training and arming, ongoing international coalition support for Iraq and plans to liberate Mosul," a statement said.

Iraqi Defence Minister Khalid Al Obeidi has said that Daesh leaders and their families have sold their belongings and fled the city as Iraqi forces close in.

UN: Islamic State continues to commit genocide in Northern Iraq

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his concern [official statement] for the human rights violations faced by the Yazidi minority in Northern Iraq on Wednesday, stating that actions of the Islamic State (IS) may amount to genocide. Two years ago the IS attacked the Sinjar area in Iraq killing nearly 5,000 individuals. The statement claims that 3,200 Yazidi women and children remain in captivity and are subjected to nearly unimaginable violence. The Secretary-General proclaimed these crimes may constitute war crimes, crimes against humanity and even genocide. The UN encouraged the Iraqi government to bring perpetrators of these crimes to justice with a fair trial and due process while supporting the survivors.

US is losing leverage to Putin in Syria

Three days past the deadline set by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry for President Bashar al-Assad to being a political transition in Syria, fighting is raging in Aleppo, the last urban stronghold of the rebels opposed to the regime. The U.S., however, is not coming to their rescue, because the wrong kind of rebels are involved in the battle. In terms of helping to end the war, the U.S. inaction may be worse than the scenario touted by Donald Trump — an alliance with Russia to defeat Islamic State — but it's more politically acceptable.

The group formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra attempted to rebrand itself as Fatah al-Sham at the end of July, ostensibly distancing itself from its mother organization, al-Qaeda. It now appears to be the driving force behind a rebel attempt to break the Syrian army's siege. The desperate attack — supplies have been running out in eastern Aleppo — appears to have fizzled: With Russian air support, the regime forces and their Iranian and Lebanese allies are pushing back and holding the siege, which cuts the rebels off from Turkey.

In any case, since its failed coup, Turkey appears to be more aligned with Russia than with the rebels. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stepped up his anti-American rhetoric, accusing the U.S. of complicity in the coup attempt.

ISIS's war: real to virtual, far to near

In Libya and Iraq, military campaigns against ISIS are intensifying. But in assessing the movement's condition, a wider view is also needed.

On the second day of the new round of air-attacks against ISIS forces in the Libyan coastal city of Sirte, United States marine corps AV8B strike-aircraft were launched from the USS Wasp, an amphibious-warfare vessel. Military sources say that the operation would most likely last weeks, and only end when those Libyan militias loosely aligned to the government of national accord in Tripoli succeed in taking control of the city.

When the current assault on Sirte started in May 2016, rapid initial progress was reported. The city, it seems, would soon be liberated. In practice the assault slowed to a crawl as the government-backed forces suffered 300 killed and many wounded, hence the need for US air-power. It now seems likely that ISIS has already withdrawn many of its paramilitaries and dispersed them to other towns and cities. Thus, even if Sirte is taken in the coming weeks, it will be just one episode in an ongoing conflict.

In Iraq, meanwhile, government forces have consolidated their control of Fallujah amidst reports that the city is now rigidly 'policed' by Shi'a militias to the anger of many Iraqi Sunnis. Even so, preparations are now being made for an eventual attack on Iraq's second city of Mosul, which has been controlled by ISIS since the group's advance across northern Iraq in mid-2014.

The Pentagon is committing several hundred more troops to work closely with Iraqi forces, in the hope of retaking Mosul later this year. In that event, the city will in effect have succumbed to a combined assault of Iraqi government forces and Shi'a militias, backed by the United States and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. This will be welcomed as a major step in the suppression of ISIS. Yet two substantial and awkward issues will arise.

Obama: US must try to partner with Russia to defeat Islamic State

The United States must try to broker a deal with Russia to coordinate military operations in Syria and drive the Islamic State group out of that country, President Barack Obama said Thursday at the Pentagon.

Obama was there to meet with his national security advisers to discuss ongoing strategies in the campaign against the Islamic State group. At a news conference that followed, he said no tactic used by the terrorists will stop the United States from fighting them on every front across the globe.

Home-grown militants easy recruits for ISIS

The fact is that denying the presence of ISIS in their countries will not help governments deal with the problem. While it is true that fighters may not be hopping on planes out of Syria and Iraq to form cells or 'provinces' abroad — though the return home of fighters from these countries is a problem — all militants need is a good internet connection and enough propaganda material to 'inspire' would-be jihadis sitting in far-off lands. Hence, perhaps Asian governments need to take a long, hard look within at the militant and extremist movements that already exist to stem further acts of terrorist violence.

Denmark launches first anti-ISIS strikes in Syria

Denmark announced Friday that its airforces have for the first time launched airstrikes in Syria, bombing strongholds of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Raqqa province.

Defense Command Denmark said the F-16 raid happened "in the past week" but did not give further details.

Raqqa is the de facto capital of the ISIS self-declared Caliphate.

The Danish supreme military command said their fighter jets also participated in operations over Iraqi provinces targeting ISIS tactical units, weapons stocks and fighters.

The Scandinavian country joined the international coalition fighting ISIS in October 2014. According to reports, Danish warplanes have previously participated in airstrikes on ISIS forces in Iraq, but not Syria.

Denmark's present contribution to the anti-ISIS effort includes seven F-16 fighter jets, among others, with a mandate to bomb in Syria.

Malcolm Turnbull says Islamic State losing its myth of invincibility

Malcolm Turnbull has declared Islamic State is being rolled back, losing territory, lives and its myth of invincibility.

The prime minister says Australians fighting with the terror group now face "almost certain death".

"ISIL has not yet been defeated in Syria and Iraq but it is being rolled back," he told The Australian on Saturday.

"We have not just halted ISIL's momentum, it has been turned back.

"Far from sweeping across Europe to stable their horses in the Vatican, ISIL is now seen on the defensive, losing territory, resources and lives."

Turnbull says Isis has lost almost half the territory it held in Iraq and up to 20% of its territory in Syria.

Iraqi Forces Destroy Daesh Training Camp in Mosul

In an airstrike on Friday, the Iraqi aircraft targeted a military base used by the Daesh as well as a number of the group's hideouts in the rebel-held city, according to Iraq's Arabic-language al-Forat news agency.

In another operation in Hamrin Mountains in northeast Iraq on the same day, the Iraqi Air Force attacked a column of vehicles and heavy guns.

During the offensive, 12 Daesh terrorists were killed and a number of their vehicles and a fuel tanker were destroyed.

Iraq has been facing the growing threat of terrorism, mainly posed by the Daesh terrorist group.

Daesh militants made swift advances in much of northern and western Iraq over the summer of 2014, after capturing large swaths of northern Syria.

However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the volunteer forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, has blunted the edge of Daesh offensive.

Iraqi forces are advancing toward Mosul, the largest city still under the control of Daesh.

US sponsored Syrian rebels seize IS Syria stronghold

A coalition of Kurdish and Syrian rebel groups supported by US coalition air strikes have seized the Islamic State (IS) group stronghold of Manbij, two months after launching an operation to capiture the strategic city in northern Syria, a monitor said.

"The Syrian Democratic Forces took control of Manbij on Saturday and are combing the city in search of the last remaining jihadists," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

US President Barack Obama  on Thursday touted progress the US and its allies have made in the military campaign against the Islamic State (IS) group while adding that it still posed a threat to the West.

At a press briefing he addressed a wide range of security topics, including the fight against Russia's involvement in Syria and $400m shipped to Iran after the nuclear deal.

Isisiä moukaroidaan voimalla: Yli 14 000 iskua, miljardien hintalappu

Yhdysvallat ja sen liittolaiset ovat iskeneet terroristijärjestö Isisiä vastaan jo kahden vuoden ajan.

Isis valtasi laajoja alueita Bagdadin pohjois- ja länsipuolelta vuonna 2014. Lisäksi se otti haltuunsa tärkeitä alueita Syyrian pohjois- ja itäosissa aiheuttaen lisää kaaosta sisällissotaa käyvässä maassa. Isis julisti alueelle rajat ylittävän kalifaatin.

Syyriassa liittouman tukemat Isisin vastaiset kurdi- ja arabijoukot löivät jihadistit Kobanen kaupungissa. Lisäksi ne saivat takaisin hallintaansa Tal Abyadin ja Manbijin kaupungit ja ovat luvanneet ottaa takaisin hallintaansa myös Raqqan eli Isisin pääkaupunkinaan pitämän kaupungin Syyriassa.

Irakin asevoimat ovat puolestaan vallanneet takaisin itselleen Tikritin, Ramadin ja Fallujan kaupungit. Nyt asevoimien tähtäimessä on ajaa Isis ulos Ninevehin alueelta ja Mosulista, Irakin toiseksi suurimmasta kaupungista.

Ilmaiskujen lisäksi liittouma on antanut Isisin vastaiseen taisteluun neuvonantajia, koulutusta ja muuta apua sekä Irakissa että Syyriassa.

Viime kuussa liittouman maiden korkean tason diplomaatit ja upseerit keskustelivat suunnitelmasta lyödä Isis lopullisesti.

Yli 14 000 iskua

Isisin vastainen liittouma on iskenyt terroristijärjestöä vastaan järeästi viimeisen kahden vuoden aikana. Uutistoimisto Reuters listasi lukuina, miten järjestöä on moukaroitu.

14 301 iskua

Liittouman tekemien iskujen kokonaismäärä operaation alusta lähtien elokuun 6. päivään saakka. Iskuista 9 514 toteutettiin Irakissa, 4 787 Syyriassa. Liittouman iskuilla on päärooli Irakin asevoimien etenemisessä sekä Isisin vastaisessa taistelussa Syyriassa.

19 000-25 000 terroristia

Arviolta näin monta Isisin taistelijaa toimii Irakissa ja Syyriassa. Vuonna 2014 arvio oli 20 000-31 500.

55 liittouman uhria

Yhdysvallat on vahvistanut heinäkuun 28. päivä, että tämän verran siviilejä on kuollut liittouman iskuissa. Yhdysvaltain mukaan 29 siviiliä on loukkaantunut liittouman iskuissa. Joidenkin tarkkailijoiden mukaan uhriluku olisi huomattavasti korkeampi.

5 taistelussa kuollutta

Taisteluissa on kuollut tämän verran sotilashenkilökuntaa. Kaksi amerikkalaista kuoli haavoihinsa tulitaistelussa Isisin kanssa, kolmas amerikkalainen kuoli raketti-iskussa. Syyriassa Isis poltti jordanialaislentäjän kuoliaaksi. Irakin kurdijoukot tappoivat vahingossa kanadalaissotilaan.

47 prosenttia menetettyjä alueita

Amerikkalaislähettilään mukaan Isis on menettänyt valtaamistaan alueista lähes puolet, Syyriassa noin 20 prosenttia.

6 500 henkilöä

Suurin piirtein tämän verran liittouma on valjastanut joukkoja tukioperaatioihin Isisin vastaisessa taistelussa. Suurin osa heistä on Irakissa, joitakin Syyriassa. Jotkut heistä ovat taistelleen suoraan Isisin taistelijoita vastaan, mutta suurimmalla osalla on neuvonantajan rooli.

13 maata mukana

Liittoumaan Isisiä vastaan kuuluvat Australia, Bahrain, Britannia, Kanada, Tanska, Ranska, Jordania, Alankomaat, Saudi-Arabia, Turkki, Yhdistyneet arabiemiirikunnat ja Yhdysvallat.

7,7 miljardia dollaria hinnaksi

Yhdysvaltojen johtama operaatio Isisiä vastaan on tullut maksamaan 7,7 miljardia dollaria (noin 7 miljardia euroa) toukokuun loppuun mennessä tänä vuonna.

Eli jostain syystä kalifaatti pelkää, mutta esim. Hamas ei kuitenkaan pelkää. Viimeisen vuoden aikana Israelissa on kuollut yli 40 ja haavoittunut pitkälti yli 500 iskuissa, jotka Israel järjestelmällisesti ja poikkeuksetta nimeää palestiinalaisterroriksi.

No Israelilla olisi poliittinen sauma ja myös poliittiset pallit sen verran iskussa, että palestiinaloisteroristot voisi laittaa kunnolla kuriin. Heilläkin on kuitenkin sivistysmaana sellainen asema, että eivät ihan kaikkea voi tehdä. Israel ruotsalaisilla dialogipoliiseilla olisi jo ollut historiaa ajat sitten.

Israelista kannattaa ottaa mallia, miten terot hoidetaan. Näin olympialaisten aikaan muistuu aika mieleen operaatio Jumalan kosto. Jos joku kerta jossakin menee joku Ahmetti pesuveden mukana, niin se on työtapaturma, eteenpäin ja teroille nappia otsaan. Me tarvitaan lisää Mossadeja ja vähemmän dialogipoliiseja.
