Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship John McCallum reiterated his government's commitment to bringing 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of the year yesterday.

He also indicated that not all 25,000 might be government-assisted refugees. Some could be privately sponsored.

Before you get all red in the face, thinking the fix is in, let me tell you: that would be a good thing.

Settlement agencies across the country have said clearly, they are not prepared to settle 3,500 refugees a week, particularly after the Conservative cuts of the past five years. They need help.

At the same time, hundreds of community and faith groups across the country have formed with the intention of sponsoring Syrian refugees. The vast majority were created in response to our previous government's inaction on the file, true. If the Conservatives weren't going to help children like little Alan Kurdi, whose lifeless body washed up onto a Turkish beach last September, than we would do it personally.

Some 250 groups have registered with Lifeline Syria alone. Add to that the many faith groups that are applying through their churches or synagogues. (Rosedale United has a dozen groups affiliated with the church submitting sponsorship applications.)

Many have raised the requisite $27,000, taken their settlement training, and jammed furniture in their neighbours' garages, in preparation.

Why dismiss that goodwill and keep them waiting?

There are also the refugees themselves to consider. Since Canada began allowing private groups to sponsor refugees in response to the Indochinese crisis in 1979, studies have shown those refugees fare better in those first tender years in Canada than their government-sponsored brethren.
