Every refugee family is assigned to a non-governmental organization that will assist you upon arrival in the U.S. The initial assistance you receive for housing, household supplies, and furniture is very basic. Many items such as clothing and furniture may be used, or very inexpensive, but all items provided will be clean and in good condition.

It is important that you cooperate with the resettlement plan that you and your resettlement agency develop together. You will be assisted with your job search wherever you are resettled. Finding employment in the U.S. may take some time and your first job will probably not be in the same profession or field as your job in your home country. It may be an entry level non-professional job, and may even be temporary or part-time. The cost of living and availability of public support varies throughout the United States. The assistance that is provided to you will not be identical to that provided refugees in other states. Public transportation is available in most U.S. cities. Cars are not provided as part of the resettlement process.

FURTHER INFORMATION TO CONSIDER REGARDING LIFE IN THE UNITED STATES

Admission to the United States as a refugee allows you to reside there permanently and eventually to apply for citizenship. Your decision to resettle in the United States does not eliminate the possibility of return to your home country at any time but doing so could affect your status in the U.S.

The United States is a diverse country of more than 300 million people. While ethnic communities exist, most Americans reside in communities that are mixed. It is likely that your neighbors, colleagues, and classmates will be of different races, religions, ethnicities, and lifestyles.

Refugees enjoy the same rights as others living in the United States, including freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, and freedom of movement. You cannot be arrested or imprisoned for expressing an opinion, practicing your religion, or meeting with a group of your friends.

Most Americans value self-reliance and hard work. They expect newcomers to find jobs as soon as possible and to take care of themselves and their families. Cash and other assistance provided to refugees by the government generally is not enough to fully support a family. Knowing English is important for success in the U.S. You might be able to find work if you do not speak English, but your job opportunities will be limited. There are opportunities to study English in most communities, but you will also be expected to work.

Public education is free from kindergarten through grade 12. Education is mandatory for children ages 6 to 16 in most states. Parents may also enroll children in private schools (including religiously-affiliated schools) but tuition at these schools is often expensive. The cost of university education can be substantial. To help pay for their education, many university students also have jobs, seek scholarships, or take loans which they must repay after they graduate.

Refugees resettled in the U.S. are eligible for at least eight months of government-provided health care. Health care can be expensive and individuals, not the government, are normally responsible for paying for health services. Those without health insurance will not be refused emergency treatment. Most people rely on insurance programs at least partially financed by their employer, but many entry-level jobs do not offer health insurance coverage. Most recently-legislated changes in the American health care system will not become effective for another year or more.

Many refugees who resettle in the U.S. report that one of the most difficult adjustments is to changes in traditional family roles. In many families, both the husband and the wife need to work. In many instances, children learn English and adapt to life in the U.S. more quickly than their parents. The process of adjusting to these and other changes is different for each person and can cause significant stress to individuals and families. You should seek the assistance of your resettlement agency in obtaining help during this exciting but sometimes difficult period. More than three million refugees have come to the U.S. in the last 35 years. Resettlement in any new country presents challenges, but most refugees have successfully adapted to life in their new communities and found new opportunities for themselves and their families.

Fewer positions are available, and the Iraqis must compete with laid-off Americans, who speak the language and have experience working in this country. In the past, 80 percent of refugees found employment within six to eight months of their arrival, says Nathaniel Hurd, a government-relations and advocacy officer for the International Rescue Committee. That figure rose to between 90 and 95 for refugees within the IRC network. Now, Hurd says, only 50 percent of refugees secure work.

"It's really a tragic situation. I believe we made a commitment to help people establish their lives here, and we're not doing that."

Silewa received food stamps and $359 a month from Catholic Charities for the first eight months he was here, but that did not cover his half of his $800 monthly rent. He worked in an oil field in Iraq; now he must borrow money to pay his rent, utilities, phone bill, bus fare and other life expenses.

But many in the Somali-American community say finding a food shelf that caters to their religious dietary restrictions is almost impossible.

"Some food shelves are trying to meet the need, but some of them already got canned beans that have already been mixed with pork — and there is a literacy issue here," said community activist Fartun Weli.

A group of first-generation Somali Americans says they need help in developing a food shelf that specializes in healthy foods that do not contain pork or pork byproducts.

"It's about human rights also, basic human rights to get the proper food and also healthy food," said Imam Hassan Mohamud.

With signs in hand, they marched to the Hennepin County commissioners' office to ask Peter McLaughlin for help. Most live in his district and feel he can help them help themselves.

McLaughlin and the group disagree over the availability of halal or kosher food at food shelves in Minnesota.

He did say they would need to petition all county commissioners for the money to make this food shelf a reality.

"The place to deal with this is going to be within the budget ... our budget for next year," McLaughlin said.

To get the food shelf up and running will cost $150,000, but McLaughlin says there is no plan on how much would be needed to sustain it.

They say they were mocked, harassed, demeaned, singled out, and then forced out or fired, all because of their nationality and religion.

Six Muslim Minnesotans from East Africa filed a class action lawsuit against Hertz last month, accusing the rental car company of widespread discrimination at its Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport location.

The former Hertz employees say they were happy at Hertz until management changes were made in 2007. They contend that for three years after that, they were subjected to countless instances of discrimination large and small. According to the lawsuit, the keeping of two refrigerators—one in which Muslims from Somalia and Ethiopia were allowed to put their food, and one where they weren't—is just one of many examples.

"I try my best and I do everything. I'm one of the best employees," said Nadif Ketibe, who worked at Hertz for six years.

"I know I've been disrespected and I've been abused," Ketibe added.

But he said he didn't speak up during his time at Hertz because he feared losing his job.

Ketibe is one of six former employees suing Hertz over their treatment at the airport location.

The lawsuit states East African Muslims, "... were regularly harassed for praying ... treated disrespectfully, subjected to discriminatory and demeaning statements ... mocked (and) disciplined more severely."

"Insulting our religion, our books, our races and everything," Ketibe said.

The lawsuit also quotes various Hertz employees as saying, "If you pray continuously you will make us lose money and no Muslims will be hired," "Find people who are not Muslim so we can hire them," "Your religion is lying. The Quran is lying. You're a liar," and, "This guy's hatred of Americans is just below the surface."

The former workers say the last straw was the introduction of a discriminatory prayer policy.

"We refused to sign that, and after that, we got fired," Ketibe said.

More than 100 Somalian students and adults gathered outside St. Cloud Technical High School Wednesday afternoon in protest of recent administration decisions, according to the St. Cloud Times.

According to the Times' report, the group was protesting the school's handling of conflicts between Somali and non-Somali students.

A parent of a Somali student at the high school told the St. Cloud Times that the students organized the protest through social media.

St. Cloud Technical High School was put on lockdown Wednesday afternoon, according to the school administration.

According to an alert issued by the high school, the school was placed in containment. Administration is at the school and students were within their classrooms.

As the economy picks up across Minnesota, the state's Somali-born population continues to battle higher than average unemployment.

The most recent figures, for 2011-2013, put Somalis' unemployment at 21 percent, about three times the rate for the general population during the same period of time.

He was speaking at a news conference held in response to a White House address on countering violent extremism.

Social problems — including unemployment and a lack of opportunity — can fuel sympathy for international extremism, he said: "Almost 30 percent [unemployment]. Nobody's talking about that."

As authorities arrest six young men in Minneapolis and San Diego for allegedly planning to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State, local leaders attempt to address the root causes of radicalization.

A 10-month investigation has led to arrests in what some have called the largest confirmed case of Islamic State recruiting in the United States. Federal prosecutors say six young Somali Americans arrested Sunday in Minneapolis and San Diego were attempting to travel to Syria to fight with the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL.

But while the recruitment efforts of extremists may have been thwarted this time, government officials say that more work is needed to ensure that Muslim youth are not radicalized. So far, a few dozen Americans have traveled, or attempted to travel, to Syria to join the Islamic State. The single-largest cohort has been Somali-Americans from Minnesota, according to The New York Times.

"To be clear, we have a terror recruiting problem in Minnesota. I urge anyone who is concerned about their young son or brother to reach out," Andy Luger, US attorney in Minnesota, said during a press conference on Monday.

Minnesota has the largest Somali population in the country. School troubles, generational divides within their families, lack of connection to religious leaders and to mainstream Minnesota, and high unemployment and poverty are among the factors that make certain young people susceptible to the recruitment tactics of extremists, officials say.

Lewiston's Somalis first began showing up in 2001. Originally refugees who settled near Atlanta, many moved to Maine. In a 2011 survey, the most common reason they gave for the northward trek was to improve their quality of life -- not just affordable housing, but safety, good schools, and the increased social control that came with living in a smaller community. Maine's relatively generous welfare system also played a part -- but other Somalis moved from states with more generous benefits.

In a city with two of Maine's poorest census tracts, a swelling contingent of welfare-dependent non-English-speaking immigrants traumatized by war and violence didn't exactly promise an economic miracle. Nonetheless, they brought new life to downtown -- new restaurants and shops, businesses, even a mosque. Many found jobs in and around Lewiston, and for those who didn't, their welfare payments still helped the local economy.

Cargill Meat Solutions said Thursday it tried to resolve a workplace prayer dispute with Somali workers at its Fort Morgan meatpacking plant that led to the firing of about 190 employees.

The workers who lost their jobs were mostly immigrants from Somalia, and their termination came after they failed to report to work for three consecutive days last week to protest what they say were changes in times allowed for Muslim prayer.

Cargill says, however, it makes every "reasonable attempt" to provide religious accommodation for all of its employees at the Fort Morgan plant without interrupting operations.

"At no time did Cargill prevent people from prayer at Fort Morgan," said Michael Martin, a spokesman for the Wichita-based company, which is part of the agribusiness giant Cargill Inc. " Nor have we changed policies related to religious accommodation and attendance. This has been mischaracterized."

Cargill also said while reasonable efforts are made to accommodate employees, accommodation is not guaranteed every day and depends on changing factors in the plant.
