Radical parties seize Greek vote to push eurosceptic agenda

Rome (AFP) - Eurosceptic parties at the extreme left and right of the political spectrum are exploiting the Greek referendum set for Sunday to bash the euro currency and advance their own agendas.

The hard-left government of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has called on Greeks to vote 'No,' rejecting the bailout terms of more austerity from Greece's creditors.

Some leftist anti-austerity politicians around Europe have spoken up to support Tsipras and several plan to travel to Athens for Sunday's vote.

Nichi Vendola, leader of Italy's opposition Left, Ecology and Liberty party, has vowed to "show our solidarity with the Greek people as they confront... the social butchery ordered by Brussels and blessed by Berlin", which he calls incompatible with founding European principles of unity.

In Spain, radical leftist party Podemos -- which has expressed its support for Tsipras while stopping short of publically backing a 'No' vote -- will send its head of international relations, Pablo Bustinduy, to Athens.

"The problem isn't Greek, it's European... Some people are seeking to use the Greek people to show it is not possible to implement alternative policies in Europe, and specifically in southern Europe," said Inigo Errejon, the party's number two official.

France's Jean-Luc Melenchon, a founder of the Left Party, has criticised the "methodical, systematic strangulation of Greece by the Eurogroup to make it an example so people fear financial catastrophe in their own countries."

Italian comedian Beppe Grillo, who for months has been pushing for a referendum on whether the eurozone's third-largest economy should remain a member, has also pledged to visit Athens Sunday.

"We want to say publically that Tsipras, with this referendum, is doing an extraordinary thing because, democratically, he is giving the last word to the Greek people," Grillo said, urging a 'No' vote.


- 'Laboratory of hyper-austerity' -

Meanwhile Europe's right-wing flank, a surprising political bedfellow, has also hailed the Greek leftist government's plebiscite which it sees as the first step in member states clawing back sovereignty from Brussels.

"I say 'Go Tsipras,' even if I do not agree with his political vision, his economic policies, his deceit," said Renato Brunetta, an official from Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party.

"We're sick of this Europe of the bureaucrats, we're tired of this German Europe."

Among extreme-right parties, Florian Philippot, vice-president of France's National Front party that wants to abandon the euro, said Brussels had "played with the Greeks as you would guinea pigs (in)... a laboratory of hyper-austerity."

Nigel Farage, leader of Britain's eurosceptic UKIP party, said the vote was a chance for the Greeks to call European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker's "bluff" and take back their independence, along with their own currency.

"Greece has been impoverished by euro membership for too long. This crisis has now become an opportunity," he said on Twitter, adding: "The Greek people need freedom to prosper."

"If I were Greek, I would vote 'No,' because people should not be humiliated," added Matteo Salvini, the rising star of Italy's Northern League, who threatened to call on his supporters to replicate the rush by Greeks on cash machines to prove that "we are not slaves of the European Central Bank."

"This Europe is a disaster. The European rules are disastrous, the European treaties should be reviewed one by one, the single currency is a mistake. So, before dying of starvation and unemployment, we'd be better off stopping and reviewing it all, start again from the beginning," Salvini said.

Harald Vilimsky, a European Parliament member from Austria's nationalist FPO party, told AFP the Greek crisis is "the beginning of the end for the euro".

"Since 2008, all these attempts to stabilise and save the euro have only made the problem worse... This European architecture based on a common currency, which integrates incompatible economic systems, is increasingly dragging the whole EU zone into a general crisis."

The leaders of SYRIZA need to understand that they have already crossed the Rubicon. They did so when they asked for the vote of the Greek people in order to stop the disastrous course of the memorandum. They crossed it yet again when they decided to hold a referendum. By so doing they cut off bridges. They will drown and will drown us if they attempt to reverse their course.

"rikas Kreikka" EU vakuuksilla ja siihen liitetyt puolustusvälinetilaukset. Ainut rikas euromaa on todellisuudessa enää Saksa, joten se ei halua pitää himmeliä yksin pystyssä. Saksan intressi on ollut olla mukana niin kauan että kaikki muut euromaat on lainoitettu tappiin, samalla kun saksalaiset ovat myyneet ulos tuotteitaan. Nyt se on loppu. Yhteisvastuu rasittaa Saksaa kohtuuttomasti, joten irtautuminen on väistämätöntä.

Pelkään, että käy Kreikan kansanäänestyksessä niin tai näin, niin euroeliitti mukaanlukien Alex Stubb ei halua menettää kasvojaan Kreikan eroamisella eurosta. Tällöin mikään esim. suomalaisten veronmaksajien tekemä uhraus ei ole liian iso. Pääasia että euron puolestapuhujat eivät joudu tunnustamaan väärässä oloaan.

Kreikka on virallisen vaaliennusteen mukaan äänestämässä "ei".

Tämä tulee tarkoittamaan sitä, Kreikka tulee vaatimaan aivan hulppeita etuuksia itselleen, ja se tulee saamaan ne, koska poliittiset johtajat ovat yhdessä päättäneet, että Kreikkaa ei eurosta eroteta. Hulppeuteen tullee kuulumaan kaikkinainen uudistuksien puute - eli veroja ei jatkossakaan maksata - anteeksiannetut velat ja varmuus Pohjois-Euroopan maiden tulevistakin elatusmaksuista.

Suomelle tämä tulee tietämään entistä kurjempia aikoja. Sipilällä on piikki auki Kreikkaan. Perussuomalaisten hallitusohjelmaan saama tukipakettikriittinen kirjaus ei päde, kuten eivät muutkaan perussuomalaisten hallitusohjelmaan saamat kohdat, koska kokoomus ja keskusta ovat määräenemmistöllä äänestäneet, ettei perussuomalaisten höpinöistä tarvitse piitata.

Suomelle tämä tulee tietämään entistä kurjempia aikoja. Sipilällä on piikki auki Kreikkaan. Perussuomalaisten hallitusohjelmaan saama tukipakettikriittinen kirjaus ei päde, kuten eivät muutkaan perussuomalaisten hallitusohjelmaan saamat kohdat, koska kokoomus ja keskusta ovat määräenemmistöllä äänestäneet, ettei perussuomalaisten höpinöistä tarvitse piitata.

Myös Perussuomalaiset hyväksyivät hallitusohjelmassa tapauskohtaiset tukipaketit Euroopan vakausmekanismin kautta.

Tämä menee ehkä hieman OT:n puolelle, mutta liittyy Kreikkaan. Olen käsittänyt, että Kreikka tarvitsee lisää rahaa. Ratkaisu on yksinkertainen. Kreikan valtio voisi maksaa virkamiestensä palkat, eläkkeet ja maan sisällä tekemänsä ostot painattamillaan paperilappusilla, joissa olisi kaunis kuviointi, jonkun tunnetun kreikkalaisen kuva ja jokin luku, esimerkiksi 10, 20, 50 tai 100.

Luonnollisesti ulkomaankaupassa muut kuin kreikkalaiset osapuolet eivät lappuja hyväksynne maksuvälineiksi. Mutta maan sisällä ne olisivat oikea maksuväline, jonka vastaanottamisesta kieltäytyminen voitaisiin kriminalisoida. Muiden kuin Kreikan valtion paperien käyttö maksuvälineenä tulisi kriminalisoida. Laput olisivat ainoa sallittu maksuväline. Paperilapputaloudessa kreikkalaisten elintaso asettuisi sille kuuluvalle realistiselle tasolle. Paperilaput olisivat kreikkalaisille silmien avaaja ja kannuste kehittää maataan.

Luultavasti hyvin pian kreikkalaiset pankit avaisivat lapputilejä ja niitä voisi käyttää verkon kautta. Digirahalla on sekin etu, että sen luominen on yhtä helppoa kuin enterin painaminen. Kreikan keskuspankki voisi myös "löytää" "natsien kulta-aarteen" ja ilmoittaa sen arvoksi 1000 miljardia euroa. Kreikan valtio voisi käyttää maksuvälineenä kultaharkkojen ja kultahippujen talletustodistuksia ja jopa vaihtaa niitä euroihin. Itse kultaa ei kummikaan pääsisi kukaan katsomaan. Olemassaolosta olisi kyllä korkeiden kreikkalaisten virkamiesten silminnäkijätodistus, jossa olisi paljon leimoja ja sinetti.

Itse soisin Kreikan jäävän sekä euroon että EUhun. Sitä vastoin harras toiveeni on, että kaikki muut maat eroavat molemmista.

Far-left and far-right welcome Greek No

Far-left and far-right European parties have hailed the Greek No, with the far-right using it to bash EU institutions.

Pablo Echenique, a leading member of the far-left Podemos party in Spain said on Twitter: "The Greek brothers are telling financial dictators that one doesn't play with democracy and dignity".

He said "democracy" won in Greece.

He also changed his Twitter picture to one showing himself at a rally with Greek PM Alexis Tsipras.

Rafael Mayoral, a fellow Podemos leader, who was in Athens on Sunday (5 July), said "joy is in the air".

Gabi Zimmer, the president of the far-left Gue group in the European Parliament, in her statement also attacked the "EU's ruling elites".

Naming German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, she spoke of an "unprecedented campaign of fear" against Greek voters.

But her main message was that the EU should give Greece debt relief for "political" reasons, in order to keep the Union together.

"Greeks are ... saying Yes to European integration and Yes to European democracy", she said.

For her part, Marine Le Pen, the leader of the far-right National Front party in France, welcomed Greece's "beautiful" lesson in democracy.

But she said it means "the failure of the euro".

She urged EU leaders to sit "around the negotiating table, take stock ... and organise the dissolution of the single currency".

Geert Wilders, the leader of the Dutch anti-immigrant party, the PVV, tweeted that the Netherlands will quit the euro next: "No = Grexit. After that Nexit".

His British counterpart, Nigel Farage, the leader of Ukip, went further.

He said the No means the "EU project is now dying".

There were few international reactions on Sunday evening, as leaders prepared snap meetings to digest the result.

But Alexei Likhatchev, Russia's economy vice-minister, joined Le Pen and Farage in wishing the euro ill.

Greece has "taken a step towards leaving eurozone", he said, according to French media.

'Europe is dying', EU opponents say, as Greek 'No' brings delight

LONDON (Reuters) - If Greece's 'No' vote shocked euro zone leaders, it brought delight to opponents of the European Union who said it showed the entire European project, including the euro, was dying.

Rejecting European creditors' demands, Greeks voted against the terms of a bailout on Sunday, delivering one of the biggest blows to Europe's drive to forge an enduring monetary union since the euro was launched in 1999.

"The EU project is now dying," said Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence Party, an anti-EU party which won 12.6 percent of the vote -- but just one seat -- in Britain's May 7 general election.

"It's fantastic to see the courage of the Greek people in the face of political and economic bullying from Brussels," Farage said as partial results showed 61 percent of Greeks rejecting the bailout offer.

Farage hopes Britons will emulate the Greek 'No' vote in a referendum which Prime Minister David Cameron has committed to call by end 2017 on whether Britain should stay in the EU.

From France to Finland and across Europe's southern and northern shores, Eurosceptics lined up to laud Greek democracy for disowning what some cast as the "oligarchy" which runs the 28-member EU, the world's largest economic bloc.

For opponents of European integration, the Greek crisis offers a trove of lessons: from the weakness of the politically driven 19-member euro zone to the failure of elites to heed the views of their own people or of the bond markets.

EU-critical parties of the far left and hard right stunned Europe's political establishment by grabbing more than a quarter of the seats in European Parliament elections last year.

They depict the euro and the EU as the constructs of a conceited elite who have led 500 million Europeans into economic stagnation and failed to protect workers from globalization, immigration and decline.

"NO. NO. NO. No to the Soviet Union of unemployment and immigration. Yes to a New Europe, founded on work and respect for the People," Matteo Salvini, the leader of Italy's anti-euro Northern League party, said on Twitter.


A FAREWELL TO EUROS?

While the fate of Greece dominates the headlines in Berlin, Paris and London, the longer-term impact of a 'Grexit' could be in sowing deeper doubts in public opinion around the EU.

"The Greek 'No' must lead to a fast departure of Greece from the Eurozone, the earlier the better," Dutch populist politician Geert Wilders said. "Today is the beginning of the dismantling of the euro zone."

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen said the result was a victory against "the oligarchy of the European Union".

"European countries should take advantage of this event to gather around the negotiating table, take stock of the failure of the euro and austerity, and organize the dissolution of the single currency system, which is needed to get back to real growth, employment and debt reduction," said Le Pen, the leader of the anti-immigration, anti-euro National Front.

If, as many banks in London are now betting, what is left of Greece's economy drops out of the $11.7 trillion euro zone, British opponents of the EU see an ideal backdrop to Britain's referendum on membership.

Cameron has said he wants to get a deal on reforming the EU and changing London's relationship with it that he can sell to the public to keep Britain inside the club it joined in 1973.

He formally began his renegotiation of Britain's membership terms at an EU summit this month, where the discord over migration and Greece was such that he was given just a few rushed minutes to outline his plan.

"The general chaos around the Greek crisis is a tragedy highlighting the weakness and inflexibility of the European institutions," Richard Tice, a British businessman who is helping fund the 'Out' campaign, told Reuters.

"It is most unlikely to increase the popularity of the European project or the euro ahead of the UK referendum. It does not give one any confidence that the same institutions understand the need for major reform that even the pro EU lobby accept must happen."

Such is the resonance of the Greek crisis, that even one of the senior members of the British "In" campaign, Roland Rudd, said it was now "time to let Greece go".
