A row over the planned construction of Iceland's first purpose-built mosque has dominated the county's most recent elections and comes in the wake of a spate of anti-Islamic initiatives that point to mounting tensions over the presence of Islam in the tiny island nation.

Not long after Europe's largest electorate turned out to vote for European Parliament candidates, one of the continent's smallest electorates voted in local elections in Iceland.

A relatively typical and harmonious campaign was upturned, however, when the leader of the Progressive candidacy in Reykjavik, Sveinbjörg Birna Sveinbjörnsdóttir, spoke to journalists a week prior to the elections and expressed her determination to withdraw an existing offer of a plot for the building of the country´s first bespoke mosque.

One supporter of Ms Sveinbjörnsdóttir´s position urged voters to familiarise themselves with the situation in the Nordic countries where Muslims were apparently "committing crimes particularly against women and children", a comment Ms Sveinbjörnsdóttir herself endorsed with a 'like' on Facebook. Others were outraged...

Suivaantuneet aktivistit kävivät ripottelemassa sianpäitä suunnitellulle rakennuspaikalle. Tämä johti rikostutkintaan, joka loppui kuin seinään koska kunnossapito ehti siivoamaan paikan ennen poliisien saapumista...

Salmann Tamimi, founder of the Muslim Association of Iceland, and his lawyer, Helga Vala Helgadóttir, say it is important to make a stand against the hate speech which has recently been flaring up on the internet.

An article published on visir.is on Sunday with the heading 'Could start to build mosque after the weekend' sparked a lot of discussion. Some of the comments on the website were particularly harsh and were directed towards Salmann and Ibrahim Sverrir Agnarsson, chair of the association.

Salmann is bringing charges against those who made the comments on Vísir.

On 24 July 2014 Salmann made the headlines for his comments in relation to a funeral of Israeli soldiers: "To hell inshallah. Your friends will follow you." Many condemned his remarks.

Islannin eteläisimpään kohtahan taitaa olla Oulun korkeudella mutta golf-virta lämmittää. Maan asukasluku on kuitenkin 300000 eli nopeasti vähemmistöksi pyyhkäistävissä elleivät he ole aivan erityisen tarkkoja keitä maahansa päästävät.

Moskeijoiden perään vinkujat ovat tasan viimeisiä mitä noin vähäväkinen kansa tarvitsee jos aikoo pysyä enemmistönä omassa maassansa.
