QuoteImmigrants will be forced to learn first verse of national anthem as citizenship test is overhauled

Immigrants will be forced to learn the first verse of the national anthem in a revised version of the citizenship test, it was reported today.

Theresa May will unveil a new test which places the emphasis on learning key historical facts and British culture.

The Home Secretary believes the test currently places too much emphasis on the practicalities of daily living in Britain rather than the country's past.

Questions on how to claim benefits, borrowing money and the Human Rights Act will all be scrapped.

A revised handbook for the test - which places a greater focus on history and traditions - will be brought in from the autumn, the Sunday Times reported.

David Cameron pledged in a speech last year to improve the citizenship test.

It will tell immigrants the UK is 'historically' a Christian country with a 'long and illustrious history'.

The test will include sections about famous battles, including Trafalgar, and there will also be a section on British inventions such as the radar and the television.

QuoteA section on the Queen will also be included, with would-be-Britons also expected to memorise the profiles of famous artists, writers and playwrights such as William Shakespeare.

They will also have to study Florence Nightingale, Emmeline Pankhurst and Edward Elgar.

Sections on dustbin collections, reading the gas meter and buying home contents insurance are all expected to be ditched.

The Government will also ditch politically-loaded expressions from the handbook - including a reference to Margaret Thatcher as 'divisive'.

Tony Blair is described as a harmonious and modernising Prime Minister in the handbook for the Life in the United Kingdom test which was originally introduced by Labour in 2005.

A Home Office spokesperson said: 'Putting our culture and history at the heart of the citizenship test will help ensure those permanently settling can understand British life, allowing them to properly integrate into our society.

Maastamuuttaja

No jaa, kaasumittarin lukemisesta lienee jokapäiväisessä elämässä enemmän hyötyä kuin Edvard IIn homppelisuosikin nimen muistamisessa.
