ARRESTED TERROR SUSPECTS WERE TRAINING WITH RIFLES, BOMB VESTS AT LIMBURG HOLIDAY PARK: REPORT

Members of a group arrested in September on suspicion of preparing for terrorist attacks in the Netherlands, received terrorism training at a holiday park in Weert on the day of their arrest. The training consisted of learning to use handguns and Kalashnikovs and fitting bomb vests, RTL Nieuws reports based on its own research and information from multiple sources.

The training happened on September 27th. Four of the seven arrested suspects were at the training. Two undercover police officers, pretending to be people that could deliver firearms for the attack and show how to use them, were also there. RTL's source emphasize that no shots were fired, all firearms had been disabled. The bomb vests also contained no explosives.

The meeting took place in a cottage at Weerterbergen holiday park. Before the training, the police installed listening devices in the cottage. The undercover police officers handed the suspects five handguns and instructed them on how to use the weapons. There were also two Kalashnikovs in the cottage, which an undercover cop also explained how to use. The suspects also tried on bomb vests during the training session, according to the broadcaster.

Shortly after the suspects left the holiday park in Weert in a van, the police intervened. An anti-terrorism team overpowered and arrested the four men. Three other suspects were arrested in Arnhem.

German Woman Charged With Islamic State Membership

Federal prosecutors say they've charged a 26-year-old German woman with membership in a terrorist organization on allegations she joined the extremist Islamic State.

Prosecutors said Thursday that Derya O., whose full name wasn't given in line with privacy laws, is accused of joining the group in Syria in February 2014 and marrying a fighter there with whom she had had previous contact over the internet.

During a brief separation from her husband, the accused married a higher-ranking IS member in the Islamic rite. However, she was divorced three weeks later. She then returned to her former husband. From him she trained in firearms. In addition, she had during her time at the "IS" a suicide bomber suitable explosive belt. She also offered an explosive belt for sale via a messenger service.

'You're cockroaches': Woman confronts people outside home of man arrested over terror plot

A woman in a burqa furiously confronted people outside the Melbourne home of a man arrested for suspected terrorist offences today, calling them "cockroaches" and blocking entry to the premises with her vehicle.

The angry scenes came after police swooped on three Victorian men, who were caught allegedly preparing an Islamic State-inspired attack. Officers believe the trio intended to open fire on a Melbourne crowd with a semiautomatic rifle, with an intent to "kill as many people as possible".

Ertunc Eriklioglu, 30, of Dallas, Samed Eriklioglu, 26, of Campbellfield, and Hanifi Halis, 21, of Greenvale, have been charged with planning a terrorist attack and have since faced court.

The trio appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday afternoon, each charged with one count of acting in preparation for or in planning of a terrorist act, and were remanded in custody to face court in April for committal mention.

Prosecutors will have to comb through thousand of intercepted phone calls, text messages and almost 8000 hours of listening device material involved in the case against the accused while the three men remain behind bars.

Earlier in the day, a fracas occurred outside the Dallas home of one of the accused brothers, Ertunc Eriklioglu. The woman, dressed in head-to-toe black religious garb, was repeatedly asked to remove her car from the front of the block as it was blocking police, the Daily Mail reported.

The irate resident refused, at one point screaming, "You guys are cockroaches" at the crowd of media outside the house.

22-year-old allegedly said 'I'm ready for war' in recording

Milan police detained a 22-year-old Egyptian man who is suspected of being an ISIS lone wolf in an anti-terrorism operation overnight. The operation stemmed from probe by investigators in the central city of L'Aquila and also entailed searches of properties in Abruzzo, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Piedmont.

"I'm am ready to make war," the suspect allegedly said, according to investigators, who had been keeping tabs on the man and his communications for some time.

The suspect allegedly described himself as a lone wolf and boasted about having had military training.

ISIS affiliate 'planned to put rat poison in water supply'

Police officers belonging to the special NOCS unit staged an operation to stop a suspected Islamist terrorist at Macomer in the Sardinian province of Nuoro on Wednesday, sources said. A 38-year-old ISIS-affiliated jihadi suspected of planning to put rat poison in the water supply was arrested, the sources said.

He was also said to be planning to use chemical weapons.

Police described him as a "lone wolf".

He was said to be a foreigner of so far unknown origin, who came to Italy from Lebanon, sources said. He had been living at Macomer with a Moroccan woman.

The man was caught while trying to make a getaway aboard a van.

Italian anti-terrorism police on Wednesday arrested a Lebanese national of Palestinian descent on suspicion he was planning a poison attack in the Sardinian town of Macomer.

"He was planning an attack with ricin and anthrax," chief anti-terrorism prosecutor Federico Cafiero De Raho told reporters, naming the man as Alhaj Ahmad Amin.

Amin, 38, who is a legal immigrant and married with three children, was arrested in Macomer earlier in the day by hooded police who forced him from his car as he left home.

It was not immediately possible to contact Amin and the name of his lawyer was not released.

Germany jails Syrian refugee for planning car bomb attack

A German court on Friday sentenced a Syrian refugee to six and a half years in jail for planning an Islamist attack using a car bomb.

The 20-year-old, named as Yamen A., was in the process of acquiring the chemical products and materials necessary to build a bomb when he was arrested in the northeastern town of Schwerin in October 2017.

At the time, Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said "a serious attack has been prevented".

According to prosecutors, Yamen A. planned to kill or injure about "200 people" with a car bomb at an undisclosed location in Germany.

He discussed bomb-making instructions in online chat groups and repeatedly tried to manufacture the powerful explosive TATP, his trial at Hamburg's higher regional court revealed.

Prosecutors had sought a punishment of five and a half years, but judges opted for a longer sentence given the accused's "determination" to carry out an attack, DPA news agency reported.

"You wanted to take lives, and in doing so endanger the security of the state," said presiding judge Ulrike Taeubner.

Yamen A. arrived in Germany in 2015 at the height of the refugee influx to avoid military service at home.

Investigators believe he was radicalised over the Internet by mid-2017 and became a supporter of the Islamic State group.

Ohioan wanted to join the Islamic State as a suicide bomber, feds say after his conviction

A Dayton man who wanted to become a suicide bomber was convicted Thursday of attempting to join the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, according to federal authorities.

Laith Waleed Alebbini, 28, expressed his desire to become an "inghimasi soldier," a term for a "particularly lethal type of suicide bomber – one who seeks to cause as much death and destruction as possible," according to the Department of Justice.

He was convicted of attempting to and conspiring to provide material support and resources to the terrorist group, the DOJ said. He made plans in 2017 to travel to Istanbul, Turkey, and from there to cross the border into Syria to join the Islamic State.

Federal Judge Walter H. Rice issued the guilty verdict. Alebbini had earlier waived his right to a trial by jury.

He faces up to 20 years in prison for each of the two crimes. His sentencing is scheduled for March 8.

Sydney teenager jailed for at least 12 years for terror plot

The boy arrested in a Bankstown backstreet with hunting knives and a desire to kill had once been "your average Muslim 16-year-old boy", according to the teenager's father.

"He slit his eyebrows thinking it was 'cool'; he wore ordinary clothes; he started chatting with girls; he started playing sport; would stay up all night playing PlayStation," the man said in an affidavit, sworn before his son was found guilty of planning a terrorist attack on the streets of Sydney's south-west.

As a 12-year-old he had held a sign at a protest calling for the beheading of people who "insult the prophet" and at 14 he refused to stand for the national anthem during school assembly, telling his principal he only stood for Allah.

According to his father, those views relaxed for a time while the teen had come under his care: "his interests in Jihad and war had changed".

But then those views returned, culminating in his and his school friend's arrest outside an Islamic prayer hall on October 12, 2016.

"You're all pigs ... look at you, like lambs to the slaughter ... you will all die in the hell fire at the hands of Allah ... you will be slaughtered at the hands of Allah," he said to police after they had found two M9 bayonets in his possession, items he had bought from a nearby gun shop for the apparent purpose of "pig hunting".

In a backpack he also had clothing that would help disguise him, as well as a note pledging "allegiance to the Caliph", which, as a recently-published Islamic State article dictated, was to be pinned to his victim.

On Tuesday the now 18-year-old man stood as NSW Supreme Court judge Geoffrey Bellew sentenced him to at least 12 years in prison for planning a terrorist attack.

"At the time of the offending, the offender was an unequivocally committed terrorist," Justice Bellew said.

Figures reveal the use of police powers relating to terrorism has exceeded 300 arrests, with 17 attack plots foiled in the year ending September 2018.

There were 317 arrests for terrorism-related activity in the year ending 30 September 2018, a decrease of 31% compared with the 462 arrests in the previous year. The fall is partly due to a relatively large number of arrests in the previous reporting year in the wake of terrorist attacks in London and Manchester. Although the number of arrests has fallen, it is still relatively high when compared with other recent years.

There has been an increase in those suspected of terrorism related offences being taken into custody, with the figure rising to over 220 detainees.

16,919 physical examinations of suspects were carried out under Schedule 7 of TACT 2000 a decrease of 25% from the previous year (12,752), continuing the downward trend seen in recent years

The quarterly Home Office statistics, published today detail the use of police powers under the Terrorism Act 2000.

Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Dean Haydon, called for continued vigilance over this busy Christmas season:

He said: "This is the fourth consecutive year where we've seen the number of counter-terrorism related arrests exceed 300 – a level that hadn't been reached prior to that since we began to record this data in 2001. It reflects the fact that in recent times we have seen a genuine step-change in terrorist activity, but equally, that we are meeting this with increased activity from the police and security services in order to keep the public safe.

"Since March 2017, working with UK intelligence services, we've foiled a total of 17 attack plots. At any given time, we are also working on some 700 live CT investigations involving around 3,000 individuals and this record level of activity shows no sign of abating."

Police thwart possible Isis-inspired plot after Newcastle arrest

Counter-terrorism investigators believe they have thwarted a potential fresh Isis-inspired plot following the arrest by armed police of a 33-year-old man in Newcastle.

Residents described seeing armed officers "dressed like soldiers" in the Arthur's Hill area of the city as properties were evacuated near a primary school.

The suspect was detained in what police described as an "intelligence-led and pre-planned" operation Tuesday morning.

It followed a joint investigation by MI5, the domestic security service, and counter-terrorism police.

The suspect was taken to a police station in West Yorkshire, where he faced questioning on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

Iranian man appears in court accused of buying a knife and chemicals in preparation for a terror attack

An Iranian man has appeared in court accused of buying a knife and chemicals in preparation for a terror attack in the UK.

Fatah Mohammed Abdullah, from Arthur's Hill in Newcastle, was accompanied by three police officers in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on Saturday.

The 33-year-old is alleged to have bought a knife, balaclava and "explosive pre-cursors" including chemicals, more than 8,000 matches and a number of fuses.

He is also alleged to have searched online for components, including a pressure cooker, to make an explosive.

Adbullah, who represented himself, wore a grey tracksuit, sported dark stubble and sat with his hands clasped behind his neck for most of the hearing.

He faces one count of engaging, between April 9 and December 11, in the preparation of an act of terrorism, contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

Abdulrahman Alcharbati jailed for terrorism Facebook videos

A civil engineer convicted of sharing terrorism videos on Facebook has been jailed for seven years.

Abdulrahman Alcharbati, from Newcastle, had denied making 70 posts promoting a "wealth of Islamic State material".

But a jury at Newcastle Crown Court found him guilty of six counts of sharing terrorist material, and also of possessing a bomb-making manual.

Judge Paul Sloan QC said the videos "glorified terrorism and were intended to encourage acts of terrorism".

"In my view, your repeated claims that your intention was simply to share and shed light on what was happening is not credible," he told Alcharbati.

Jurors were told Alcharbati, of Westholme Gardens, Benwell, uploaded a link to a film of people celebrating in the aftermath of a suicide bombing.

Another film showed Syrian soldiers being violently beaten to death and dragged away, while a guide on making suicide vests was discovered on his phone, the court was told.

Bari police on Thursday detained a Somali national who is under investigation for alleged criminal association for terrorism and instigation to commit acts of terrorism, sources said. Prosecutors issued a warrant to hold the suspect because of the "imminent danger" of him taking flight.

A Somali man arrested on December 13 in Bari was allegedly found in a wiretap by Italian DDA anti-mafia and anti-terrorism forces to have called for bombs to be planted in churches. "Let's put bombs in all the churches of Italy. Where is the biggest church? It's in Rome?," he said, according to the wiretap. The alleged terrorist was arrested when trying to flee the Bari area on December 13.

Arrested Somali 'wanted to attack St Peter's at Xmas'

A 20-year-old Somali national arrested last week in Bari on terrorism charges allegedly wanted to stage an attack at St Peter's Basilica in Rome at Christmas, according to wiretap recordings. Mohsin Ibrahim Omar, who also goes by the name Anas Khalil, is believed by DIGOS special security police in Bari to be linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) in Somalia and to be in contact with one of its operating cells. "December 25 is coming," he allegedly said in recordings contained in case documentation.

"The 25th is Christmas... the churches are full. "Let's put bombs in all the churches of Italy. Where is the biggest church? It's in Rome?," he said, according to the wiretap, apparently referring to St Peter's.

The FBI are assisting the investigation.

Denmark charges Syrian man with planning terrorist attack

Denmark's state prosecutor said on Friday a 31-year-old man had been charged with planning a terrorist attack with knives and explosives in Copenhagen in November 2016.

Copenhagen Police arrested the man a year ago, saying he was a Syrian who had sought asylum in Sweden.

A court found then there was reasonable suspicion the man had planned to commit a "terrorist attack" at an unknown place in Copenhagen in November 2016, together with a man who was convicted in Germany in July 2017 of planning an attack in Copenhagen.

Bradford man jailed for 12 years for terrorism offences

A BRADFORD CCTV operative who disseminated terrorist videos was told by a judge that he had acted as a "propagandist for Islamic State" as he was jailed for 12 years.

Asim Majid, 30, of Cranbourne Road, Heaton, possessed and shared graphic films including videos which depicted suicide bombings, guidance on how to use a knife to kill, and images of dead soldiers, some of which were shared among a group of "trusted contacts".

Leeds Crown Court heard how the material was designed to inspire others to "fight for the cause of Islamic State".

Prosecutors told how the father-of-one owned a publication, titled How To Survive In The West, which promised to teach readers "how to be a secret agent who lives a double life, something which Muslims will have to do to survive in the coming years".

Following a two-week trial, Majid was convicted of two counts of possessing documents likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism, as well as eight counts of disseminating terrorist publications.

He was also found guilty by a jury of a single charge of transferring money knowing that it may be used for terrorism.

Arizona Man Sentenced for Providing Material Support to ISIS

Ahmed Mohammed El Gammal, 46, a resident of Arizona, was sentenced today to 12 years in prison for providing and conspiring to provide material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization, aiding and abetting the receipt of military-type training from ISIS, and conspiring to receive such training. A jury convicted El Gammal of these charges on Jan. 30, 2017, following a three-week trial.

Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers and U.S Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman for the Southern District of New York made the announcement.  U.S. District Judge Edgardo Ramos presided over the trial and issued the sentence.

According to documents publicly filed in this case and evidence presented at trial:

Beginning in at least April 2014, El Gammal was an outspoken online supporter of ISIS and ISIS's Caliphate, or Islamic government, in Syria. Among other things, El Gammal announced on social media that he was "with" "the State of Iraq and the Levant," referring to ISIS; celebrated ISIS's achievements in battle and announcement of the establishment of a Caliphate; proclaimed that he "supports jihad everywhere"; and declared that "beheadings have a magical effect." El Gammal additionally announced that "if Daesh [i.e., ISIS] gets to Egypt, I will go join them, so I can torture the Egyptians, and whip them."

As of at least August 2014, a 24-year-old New York City resident named Samy El-Goarany began to express his support for ISIS on social media as well. On August 14, 2014, El-Goarany learned that El Gammal had made comments supportive of ISIS. Minutes later, El-Goarany contacted El Gammal and they communicated via an encrypted communications platform. Less than an hour after this online conversation, El Gammal sent El-Goarany a documentary on life in the Islamic State that outlined the type of training ISIS provides. Over the next several months, El Gammal and El-Goarany continued corresponding over the Internet, although El Gammal and El-Goarany ultimately deleted many of these exchanges.

Åtal för påstått avvärjt terrordåd nära

Säpo säger sig ha avvärjt ett terrordåd när man i april i år slog till mot flera personer i Akalla i Stockholm och Strömsund i Jämtland. Snart kan detaljerna klarna när åtalet kommer.

– Misstankarna mot min huvudman är fullständigt grundlösa, säger advokaten Thomas Olsson, som försvarar en av de misstänkta.

Fem personer sitter just nu häktade på olika platser i Stockholmsområdet, misstänkta för förberedelse till terroristbrott samt terrorfinansiering. Tre av dem greps vid razzian den 30 april i Akalla och Strömsund. Övriga två greps och häktades i juni respektive oktober. Samtliga kommer från Uzbekistan och Kirgizistan.

Åklagaren Per Lindqvist vid riksenheten för säkerhetsmål säger till TT att han räknar med att lämna in åtal i slutet av veckan. I övrigt kommenterar han inte ärendet.

Ovanligt fall

Att en person åtalas för förberedelse till terrorbrott är ovanligt. Sedan 2005 rör det sig om fyra fall, enligt en sammanställning från Försvarshögskolan. I det här ärendet är också omfattningen – med fem misstänkta – ovanlig, enligt terrorexperten Magnus Ranstorp.

– Det brukar vara enskilda individer. Det är väldigt ovanligt att det är så många personer. Det har vi aldrig haft innan riktigt, säger han.

Minst en av de misstänkta ska enligt tidigare uppgift till TT ha haft kontakt med Rakhmat Akilov, som dömts till livstids fängelse för terrordådet på Drottninggatan i Stockholm 2017. Enligt Magnus Ranstorp intensifierades Säpos insatser i den centralasiatiska miljön i Sverige efter dådet.

ISIS cell could attack trains: Germany in urgent probe after flag found near damaged line

GERMAN police have found an ISIS flag close to the the scene of a suspected attack on a railway line just before Christmas.

Detectives found the flag in support of the brutal terror gang and a text in Arabic near the site of a Berlin railway track that had been tampered with. Investigators are probing if the flag belongs to those responsible for damaging the railway's overheard contact wires. Following the incident, authorities found a torn steel cable and damaged wire at the train track on Sunday.

A police spokesman said: "Since the beginning of the investigation, several pieces of evidence have been secure."

Officers are investigating if there is any connection between the Berlin incident and a similar case two months ago.

In October, police found steel wire pulled across train tracks in Bavaria with fears of an ISIS terror cell was plotting to derail a high-seed train.

According to Bild, German authorities found a threatening letter written in Arabic promising more attack.

In this week's incident, train operator Deutsche Bahn informed the police and local train services were temporarily interrupted.

Friend of terrorist who plotted to kill the PM found guilty of terrorism offence

A friend of an Islamic State terrorist who plotted to assassinate the Prime Minister has been found guilty of preparing to join terrorists abroad.

Mohammed Aqib Imran, 22, from Birmingham, made arrangements to travel for jihad, around the time Naa'imur Zakariyah Rahman, 21, was set on a suicide attack on the heart of Government.

Rahman, from Finchley, north London, helped his like-minded friend by recording an IS sponsorship video for him, the Old Bailey heard.

The pair were snared by a network of online role-players from the Met Police, MI5 and the FBI.

Rahman's plans to kill Theresa May were scuppered when undercover officers handed him a jacket and rucksack packed with fake explosives.

Following a trial in July, Rahman was convicted of preparing acts of terrorism and Imran was found guilty of possessing a terrorist handbook.

Rahman also pleaded guilty during his trial to assisting Imran in the preparation of terrorist acts by recording a sponsorship video.

Following a retrial, former student Imran was further found guilty of preparing acts of terrorism abroad on or before November 28 2017.

Prosecutor Mark Heywood QC told jurors: "At the heart of this case is a developing radicalisation in the minds of two men who came to know each other online and afterwards met and began to collaborate."

Both thought about travelling abroad to further their cause, going to a conflict zone such as Syria to lend support to violence.

Each also contemplated carrying out terrorist acts of violence here in the UK.

"Mohammed Imran - he elected to travel and set about assembling money, acquiring a fake passport, engaging in research and otherwise equipping himself with the information and means to travel aboard for violence for terrorist purposes".
