Oil deliveries to Hungary by the Russian giant Lukoil have been halted. Ukraine has turned off the tap due to sanctions. Has Orban been cut off from oil? Not entirely. What then does the turning off of the Druzhba pipeline tap mean for Hungarians? The key is what reserves they have.


Russian oil has stopped flowing to Hungary through Ukrainian territory. Kyiv is cutting off Viktor Orban from cheap "Putin oil," thereby tightening sanctions on Russian Lukoil.

As Ukrainska Pravda reminds us, Lukoil has been subject to sanctions in Ukraine since 2018, although they are limited in nature. So far, the restrictions only involved withdrawing capital, trade limitations, and bans on privatizing or leasing state property.

However, in June 2024, the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine (NSDC) significantly expanded it, adding a transit ban through its territory. As a result, the Russian oil delivered through the southern branch of the Druzhba (Friendship) pipeline cannot be delivered to Hungary. These supplies were excluded from Western sanctions and covered two-thirds of all deliveries to that country.

The stop of transit through Ukraine should not be a surprise for Hungarians. With the support of partners, Ukraine could try to end the hot stage of the war with Russia by the end of the year, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with the BBC on July 18.

"I believe that if we are united and follow, for example, the format of the peace summit, we can end the hot stage of the war. We can try to do it by the end of this year," Zelensky said.

While promising that such a "plan will be ready," the president did not disclose any practical details on what it could entail.

Russia was not invited to the global peace summit held in Switzerland in June, but Kyiv said it wants to invite a Russian representative to a follow-up conference. Ukraine hopes to present Moscow with a peace plan developed jointly by the summit participants.

The Russian Foreign Ministry rejected participating in the second summit. The world must exert pressure on Russia and force it to consider a diplomatic settlement, the president said.

"It doesn't mean that all territories are won back by force. I think the power of diplomacy can help," Zelensky said, adding that weakening Russia on the battlefield would give Ukraine a more advantageous position in negotiations.

"By putting pressure on Russia, I think it is possible to agree to a diplomatic settlement."

Kyiv and Moscow have not led direct negotiations since unsuccessful talks in early 2022.

Speaking a day ahead of the Switzerland summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that as a condition for peace negotiations, Ukraine must fully withdraw from four partially occupied oblasts that Moscow illegally annexed in 2022. Kyiv rejected this demand.

In turn, the Kremlin has rejected Ukraine's key condition in Zelensky's 10-point peace formula on the full withdrawal of Russian forces.

The Republican nominee in the U.S. presidential election, Donald Trump, has repeatedly pledged to end the war within 24 hours, which could, according to some reports, include forcing Ukraine to cede territory.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, whose country is considered the most Kremlin-friendly EU and NATO member, met Trump as part of his self-styled "peace mission" in Florida, claiming that the U.S. politician would quickly demand that Ukraine hold peace talks with Russia if he is reelected.

Commenting on Trump's potential return to the White House, Zelensky said that dealing with him would be "hard work, but we (Ukrainians) are hard workers." Trump has criticized aid for Ukraine in the past, and his sway over the Republican Party contributed to delays in U.S. assistance earlier this year.

Russia's grave investments: Soaring cemetery expenditures amid war[

Russians are investing in the expansion of cemeteries. Last year, almost six times more was spent on this purpose than three years ago. The independent Russian portal "The Moscow Times" cited this information from the official public procurement portal. Places are quickly running out, and soldiers are still dying on the front.


Last year, Russian authorities allocated over £1.9 million to expand cemeteries. This is almost double the expenditure of 2022 and nearly six times the amount spent in 2020.

Local governments have already spent £1.2 million on this purpose this year, from January to June. For comparison, in 2020, Russian regions spent £317,000 on expanding cemeteries, over £1.1 million in 2021, and £ 991,000 in 2022.

As "The Moscow Times" points out, the increase in expenditure was due to a broad-based cemetery renovation programme aimed at modernising and expanding existing infrastructure. Information from RMF24 indicates that if spending on cemetery expansion in 2018 and 2019 were included, the total amount allocated for this purpose would be £1.1 million.

The video indicates that russian artillery unit was targeted in the Kharkiv region, near Lyptsi-Hlyboke direction, and reports suggest the vehicle was damaged. The footage demonstrates the use of an FPV drone with automatic target guidance.

This wheeled self-propelled artillery unit is considered an analog to the French CAESAR system. It boasts a declared range of 24.5 km, a combat weight of 32 tons and an ammunition load of 30 shells. It is built on the BAZ-6010-027 chassis with the 2A64 152 mm gun. In 2023, russia began developing a longer-range version of this artillery unit in response to criticism that it lagged behind the Western systems in range.

Overnight July 20th, the Millerovo airbase in russia became the target of a large-scale drone attack by Ukrainian Defense Forces. This russian airfield, located 150 km from the current frontline, in the Rostov region, is actively used by the russian invasion army to deploy tactical bombers, attack aircraft, attack helicopters, and more.

The strike was reported by the local authorities saying all 26 Ukrainian drones were successfully intercepted by air defenses. However, the visual evidence portrays a completely different situation. First of all, a large-scale fire was recorded at the airfield by NASA's fire monitoring satellite service.

Secondly, local residents filmed the airfield and shared the footage on social media, which gives a little more information about the real strike aftermath from a different angle.

For instance, the video above was taken from south of the air base, in the immediate vicinity. The first frames show a fire at the aircraft fuel storage area.

Next, the picture shifts and captures the maintenance area, where aircraft are serviced and repaired, and a fire can be seen there, too.

Thus, at least two facilities, critical to the functioning of the entire Millerovo Air Base, were affected and most certainly disabled.

According to the portal Militarnyj, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation is investigating unidentified persons on the Balashikha Bearing Plant (BLMZ) board located in Moscow.

Businessmen were said to have sourced ball bearings of unknown origin and, after falsifying documentation, delivered them to the Aviastar plant in Ulyanovsk, which produces the Il-76 aircraft, from 2017 to 2022. The defective bearings caused a series of failures. Five aircraft is a significant loss for a fleet comprising about 120 aircraft (about 70% of which were operational) after adding at least six lost units in Ukraine.

It is worth noting that ball bearings are a vital component of many parts. Before 2022, according to a Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) report, Russia imported 55% of its needs from Europe and the USA. These were generally the highest-quality bearings, but access to them was cut off due to sanctions, leaving the Russians with basically only Chinese sources offering significantly lower quality.

The analyst carefully studied satellite images, calculated the numbers and came to a startling conclusion. Twenty-eight months of heavy fighting in Ukraine have radically changed the tank corps of the Russian army, writes  Forbes.
The army has lost so many modern tanks that the only way it can even come close to maintaining its front-line strength of 3,000 tanks is to pull more 1960s-era T-62s out of long-term storage, the analyst of Forbes said.
"In my opinion, it is likely that we will see more T-62s in the future and they will probably be one of the main tank types in the Russian army," he wrote after comparing T-62 inventories with those of the older T-55 tanks and the newer T-72, T-80 and T-90.
The advantage of the 41-ton, four-man T-62s is that they are numerous and, compared with newer tanks, relatively simple, making them more economical to rebuild and repair after decades of open storage. The 103rd Armored Repair Plant in Siberia, along with other factories, "appear to have built up significant capacity to repair this type," the analyst noted.
It is argued that this transition - from modern T-72s, T-80s and T-90s to ageing T-62s - is an ominous sign for the Russian army as its attacks in Ukraine turn bloody.
The numbers show how the Russians got to this point. In February 2022, the Russian army entered the war in Ukraine with about 2,100 late-model T-72s, 500 modern T-80s, and 400 T-90s.
But Ukraine's mines, drones, artillery, and anti-tank missiles have taken their toll. Analysts have counted 3,000 Russian tanks destroyed, abandoned, or captured. That's the entire pre-war force, and the losses are disproportionately in modern tanks rather than the older T-55s and T-62s that the Russians began pulling out of open tank parks soon after the war escalated.
No one outside the Kremlin knows for sure how many new tanks Russian factories produce each year, but well-informed estimates put the number at between 500 and 600. That's not enough new tanks to replace all the tanks lost, so the balance is made up of old Cold War stockpiles.
In 2022, these stockpiles were significant. According to a study of satellite images, they included 6,200 tanks. The dominant types were 1,800 T-62s, 2,000 older T-72s, and 1,400 early-model T-80s.
Just over two years later, the Russians had brought in about 700 T-62s, 500 T-72s, and 1,100 T-80s for repairs. That they neglected about a thousand T-72 Urals and T-72As from the early 1970s may have something to do with the tanks' finicky autoloaders.
Stockpiles of T-80s and newer T-72s are running low, but there are still 1,100 T-62s waiting to be refurbished and given a second chance to fight. As production of new tanks continues to lag due to a lack of money, labor, and spare parts, these 1960s-era T-62s will play an increasingly important role in the Russian military in the mid-2020s.

Edellä keskustellussa Krynkyn taistelussa ryssät menettivät kalustoaan (it-aseistus, tykistö ja raketinheittimet, panssaroidut ja panssaroimattomat ajoneuvot, tutkat, droonit) 271 kpl ja ukrainalaiset 58. Nämä tappiot ovat siis vain niitä, joista on ollut saatavilla video- tai valokuvatodiste. 

Näillä luvuilla ryssien kalustotappiot ovat olleet lähes viisinkertaiset ukrainalaisiin verrattuna. Jotain osviittaa tämä antanee myös miehistötappioista. Ainakin sen se kertoo, ettei ryssää kiinnosta omat tappiot paskan vertaa.

Yllättävää, että Venäjä tapattaa omia miehiä merkityksettömässä Krynkyn valtauksessa. Ukrainan sillanpääasema olisi toki uhka, jos Ukrainalla olisi voimia hyökätä, mutta voimia ei nyt ole.

Maailman uutisissa vilisee niin paljon puhetta erilaisista aselevon vaihtoehdoista, että eiköhän verisin konflikti ole päättynyt. Sekä Venäjän että Ukrainan sotilaat lukevat uutisia. Vaikea saada miehiä hyökkäämään, kun he odottavat aselepoa.

The Russian Ministry of Defence is now even recruiting teenagers to participate in the war in Ukraine. Recently, the youngest Russian contract soldier died. Yaroslav Lipavsky, a resident of the Tyumen region, was killed on the front line. He died less than a month after reaching adulthood.


The Russian Ministry of Defence is opening more and more military training centres for young people. One of them is located in the Luhansk region. After training, teenagers are sent to the front to fight against Ukrainians.

According to the portal focus.ua, the Russians want to engage at least four thousand citizens aged 14 to 17 in the first stage.

In recent days, the youngest Russian contract soldier, Yaroslav Lipavsky, died. He died less than a month after reaching adulthood.

The Kremlin is mass-producing "cannon fodder". On social media, Russians complain and give tips on how to avoid service. The organization Iditie Liesom has already helped 30,000 conscripts and soldiers escape – the equivalent of two divisions.

Since the beginning of the aggression in Ukraine, the Russian army has irretrievably lost 505,000 troops - killed, wounded, captured, or missing. The Kremlin must replenish these giant losses with new conscripts. Currently, the draft does not exceed 15,000 per month, but only 6,000 to 12,000 new soldiers reach the front. The rest remain in the rear.

According to Russian media reports, the number of volunteers among convicts and men from the poorest regions has dropped significantly. In the cities, roundups have begun, and escapes from the army – or it – have increased.

"Last year, I turned 23. I had been successfully avoiding the army for five years, but I was caught on the street in December last year. They put me in a van and took me to the collection point," wrote one of them, hiding under the pseudonym Ali.

Ali faked an illness. After being taken to the hospital, he escaped. The gendarmerie began looking for him after a week.

"My mother later told me that the police and military, who came to her house every day, threatened her that a special brigade would find me within 12 hours, wherever I was. After two months, they started putting up flyers with my photo, even in places where I had never lived," wrote Ali, who is now hiding in Turkey.

...Escape from death
Those who already reached the front and did not want to fight most often surrender to the Ukrainians. The Russians do not officially admit how many of their soldiers have been captured. The Ukrainians are also quite reserved, only talking about "thousands of prisoners" and the problems finding suitable places to detain them.

Most Russian soldiers escape during unit relocations, leave, or from the hospital. After a brief rehabilitation, the command even sends seriously injured soldiers back to the front. They fight until they die or become disabled.
