A Birmingham school has apologised after it served bacon sandwiches to Muslim pupils by mistake.

Ninestiles school headmistress Chris Quinn issued a public apology to parents after baguettes supposedly containing 'halal chicken' made it on to canteen shelves.

The mistake came to light when a Muslim teacher bit into one of the sandwiches at the secondary school, currently rated as outstanding by Ofsted.

Ms Quinn said the 'unfortunate' labelling blunder was down to 'human error'.

'It has come to the school's notice that a small number of sandwiches, sold on July 17, 2013, which were labelled as halal, contained products which were not halal,' she said.

'The school apologises for this unfortunate mistake.  It is an important part of Ninestiles ethos that we meet the dietary requirements of all our students and staff.

'We apologise to anyone who inadvertently ate one of this small number of sandwiches.'

The school added it would be reviewing its procedures and taking steps to 'ensure its suppliers meet their commitment to the school's expectations with regards to food standards'.

Owned by a pioneering Dutch family, it is a friendly store with a lovely manager who often greets customers by name. It's not a huge operation but they do brisk business and specialise in bulk sales.
