QuoteRobert Mugabe nuhteli Yhdysvaltoja Zimbabwen asioihin sekaantumisesta. (ZUMAPRESS.COM)

Mugaben mielestä maa on hullu puuttuessaan presidentinvaaleja valmistelevan Zimbabwen asioihin.

Mugabe haluaa jatkoa 33 vuoden valtakaudelleen heinäkuun lopun vaaleissa.

Yhdysvaltain presidentti Barack Obama on ilmaissut kannattavansa vaaleja edeltäviä uudistuksia, joita Mugaben vastaehdokas, pääministeri Morgan Tsvangirai ajaa.

Mugabe ihmetteli, miten Yhdysvalloilla on otsaa saarnata.

- Pitäkää vaaleanpunainen nenänne erossa meidän asioistamme, olkaa hyvät.

Mugabe toisti, ettei halua EU:ta tai Yhdysvaltoja vaalitarkkailijoiksi, koska on jo "kutsunut ystäviään" paikalle. Muun muassa Afrikan unioni valvoo Zimbabwen vaaleja.

Mugabe on pystynyt pitämään kiinni vallastaan lähinnä diktatuurilla. Maan talous on romahtunut Ian Smithin aikojen jälkeen suoraan pohjamutiin.

Eino P. Keravalta

Mugabe: Don't fear long-eared whites

President Robert Mugabe has told Zanu-PF supporters to go out there, head corporations, work the land, and not stand back for white people.

"We have been conditioned to respect the white man," he said in a rare English phrase during his two and a half hour speech, which was mostly in Shona. "People are saying they're afraid of white people. Are they afraid of their long ears? They're even afraid of ears now," he said to laughter.

He spoke yesterday to about 40 000 supporters in Harare's 60 000-seater National Sports Stadium at one of Zanu-PF's final rallies before Wednesday's polls.

He said Zimbabweans were losing "part of our earth, part of our land" because mining companies came from abroad, took the mineral resources and left.

"My gold, precious, is under the earth," he said. "That gold is much more meaningful to me because it's part of my land, the earth where I have my residence."

He said the Zimbabweans' share of the mineral resources in the country was "more significant" than the capital companies injected into the mines. "The money comes and goes, my share is there in Mother Earth."

He added that Zimbabwe had "destroyed colonialism" and now needed to write new economics textbooks for the children because "colonialism" and "exploitation" were currently being taught.

He said with their good education, people should become directors and owners of companies and white people should be their employees.

"Zimbabweans must benefit from this land. If others want to share, they should come not as masters but as subordinates."

Zanu-PF's policy of indigenisation requires foreign-owned companies in Zimbabwe to give 51% ownership to the state.

In contrast, MDC-T, the party headed by his rival Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, is pushing for a policy called "JUICE", which would encourage foreign investment and the opening up of Zimbabwean markets.

Mugabe also told people to work the land so that the land could look after them, and so that they could keep the land.

He said the new, black farmers were doing things for themselves and "they aren't waiting for the whites".

He said the white farmers of old said farming was theirs, and claimed not to make much profit from it. "They were lying," he said. He said black farmers now contributed a significant amount to the country's gross domestic product (GDP).

Mugabe (89), whose age has been called a "national crisis" by Tsvangirai, said what had kept him going so long was "that I want to educate the young", give them skills and make them masters of their own destiny.

Zimbabwe's literacy rates are the highest in Africa.

EVICTED WHITE FARMERS SUPPLYING BULK OF IMPORTED MAIZE

The bulk of imported maize being supplied to hungry Zimbabweans is coming from former white commercial farmers evicted during the 2000 chaotic land invasions and now farming in Zambia.

Recipients of the government's grain loan scheme in Matabeleland were last week shocked to discover that the names on the stickers on the grain bags were of former white farmers.

The Zimbabwe government has imported 300,000 tonnes of maize from Zambia to feed millions of its citizens who are facing starvation.
Following the chaotic land seizures, most white commercial farmers, who were dispossessed of their farms fled to Zambia where they bought new farms. Since then Zimbabwe, which used to be southern Africa's bread basket, has been buying most of its maize grain staple from Zambia, to augment available stocks.

"Last week I received two bags of maize grain under the grain loan scheme from the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) depot in Insiza. One of the bags had a green sticker inside written, 'supplied by Michel Handris', a former Karoi commercial farmer. The sticker had also the contact details of Handris, who is now farming in the southern parts ofZambia," said Edmore Ndlovu.

Villagers who spoke to Radio VOP, in Umguza, also confirmed receiving maize bags with stickers bearing names of former white commercial farmers.

"We are now required to destroy all the Zambian bags and repackage the grain in our local bags," said a GMB source.

He said that the fact that some former Zimbabwean farmers were supplying maize had angered some senior Zanu (PF) officers and the minister of Agriculture.

Evicted Farmers Continue to Feed Zimbabwe
In a supreme irony, the bulk of the imported maize being supplied to starving Zimbabweans from Zambia is coming from the white commercial farmers who were evicted from their lands during Mugabe's chaotic land invasions. Some of the dispossessed farmers moved to Zambia where they developed new farms. It is now being found that most of the 300,000 tonnes of maize imported from Zambia to feed the millions of Zimbabweans facing starvation, comes from these farmers who had their land stolen by Mugabe's ZANU-PF government.

National Suicide

The Zimbabwe Minister of Agriculture, Joseph Made, reported that 45% of Zimbabwe maize crop planted last season was a complete write-off. Zimbabwe needed at least 2.2 million tonnes of maize to feed itself annually, but since the chaotic land reform programme begun in the year 2000, over 5,000 white commercial farmers had been evicted and their homes and farmland looted. Most of these farms have fallen into rack and ruin.

Reversal of Fortunes
The United Nations has declared that they need to supply US$200 million for aid efforts to provide food security for more than 1.4 million starving people. The irony is that while Zambia used to have to live on grain supplied from South Africa and Rhodesia, Zambia is now able to export grain, grown by ex-Zimbabwean farmers, to Zimbabwe!

Feeding Those Who Stole Their Farms
The Grain Marketing Board depot in Insiza noticed that bags of maize grain received from Zambia had been supplied by Michael Handris, a former Karoi commercial farmer. Numerous other villagers who received maize bags noticed that they bore the names of former white commercial farmers who had been evicted from their very area.

Admission of Failure
The fact that former Zimbabwean farmers were supplying maize needed to make up Zimbabwe's maize deficit has greatly angered senior ZANU officials, and the Minister of Agriculture, who have now ordered the Grain Marketing Board to destroy all the Zambian bags and repackage the grain in local bags.

Zimbabwen Tsvangirai: Vaalit olivat farssi

Hallitsevan presidentin Robert Mugaben haastaja, pääministeri Morgan Tsvangirai kuvaili vaaleja suureksi farssiksi.

- On sääli, etteivät vaalit edusta kansan tahtoa.

Vaalien virallisia tuloksua odotetaan ensi viikon maanantaiksi.

Zimbabwessa pelättiin jo ennen vaaleja tulosten vääristelyä. Maassa on aiemmin löytynyt vaalilistoilta esimerkiksi kuolleita ihmisiä

Eikö keskivertoa Kansan Uutisten lukijaa häiritse yhtään sellaisen maan ylistäminen, jonka puolueen nimi kuuluu seuraavasti:
Zimbabwe African National Union ? Patriotic Front??

Post-election reactions

Zimbabweans are reacting to Zanu Pf's electoral 'victory' differently. I have seen many people whose brains appear to have frozen, literally.  They had hoped the election would bring about the much needed change, and they have been shocked beyond belief by the outcome. They believed so much in the inevitability of change that they just cannot accept the reality of defeat. They are frozen in time and cannot move forward.

There are others who are vowing never again to participate in elections, arguing that in Zimbabwe an election is not a reliable tool with which to effect political change. This group is so thoroughly disillusioned they have lost all faith in the MDC and any other political opposition and they have decided to focus on working for the welfare of their immediate families and never again to waste time on national politics.

A friend called me to say he had decided to join Zanu PF. He is 57 years old and realizes that if he doesn't join the Zanu Pf gravy train he might die in poverty. He is already frantically trying to get hold of an old war veteran friend whom he believes is in a position of influence to get him a farm in the maize belt of Mashonaland.

It's a nightmare...

For many the nightmarish prospect of enduring the next five years under a Zanu PF administration are just too galling to contemplate and nowhere is this more apparent than in the streets of Harare where posters of Mugabe and Tsvangirai remain defiantly reminding all and sundry that Zimbabwe had a chance to decide its destiny on July 31.

For many, a Zanu PF victory just does not make sense, they accuse the 50 year old party of being too old and exhausted, of ruining the economy and driving millions of brothers and sisters into exile.

The questions many are asking include how can a party that destroyed the homes of close to a million people's in 2005 at the height of the winter season, win an election in Harare?  The memories of a gory and horrible 2008 are still fresh in many people's minds, and yet the same government that brought that upon them sees no contradiction to the logic of a landslide victory.

Crestfallen and with sunken spirits Zimbabweans recall the long winding queues for almost everything from gasoline to basic commodities such as salt just a few years ago—and none would like a return.

Since Thursday morning when results of the general elections began to filter to Zimbabweans in Harare, people have are walking about like zombies, drowning in dark shadows of pain and disbelief.

They have done it again.

Like so many conflicts in Africa, the political situation in Zimbabwe is very complex and difficult to interpret into the media and common understanding. I once told the Canadian Ambassador that the conflict in Zimbabwe was a bit like watching a medieval battle. The two sides gather on opposite sides of the valley and then on an agreed day they rush towards each other and engage in savage, no holds barred battle. The leaders of both sides, remaining out of harms way on nearby hills and watching the struggle below them. The battlefield is covered in the dust of conflict and the noise rises up in total confusion, then slowly one side gains ascendancy and eventually the vanquished leave the field and everyone picks up the pieces, buries their dead and goes home.

In 2008, after a savage election campaign, Zanu PF came off the battle field, claimed victory and swore in the President who then rushed off to a summit in Egypt to attend a continental gathering of leaders. I think he claimed 84 per cent of the vote. The only problem was that his colleagues did not accept his victory and sent him back with instructions to resume negotiations to try and patch things up. Without their support, he had no choice and the GPA and another five years of senseless political guerilla war was the outcome.

Knowing full well that on a level battlefield and the normal rules of war, that they had little chance of winning another bruising battle with the MDC, the Zanu PF very carefully planned their next fight. They had plenty of time and were prevented engaging the enemy by the region who were insisting on the next battle being conducted according to regionally acceptable rules and standards.

However, eventually the region ran out of time and using their allies in the Judiciary they were able to get the MDC onto the battlefield of their choosing and the battle was joined on the 31st July.

It's now over and the dust and smoke is clearing and it is clear, the MDC was given a thrashing. There were exceptions, In my own City we took every seat, I got 72 per cent for Morgan Tsvangirai against Mugabe's 20 per cent. I was elected by two thirds against 6 opponents who shared the other third of the vote. But this was the exception, in the rest of the country it was a political massacre.

The question is how did they do it? A picture is emerging and it's not a pretty one. First was the battle field itself. The voters roll had been carefully manipulated by experts. An Israeli company was employed in 2009 to advise the military and the Zanu PF hardliners on what to do to manipulate the roll. The result is astonishing. We went into battle with a roll that had 6,4 million names on it. We have been unable to get a copy of the roll in electronic format (costing about $15 and on one small CD which can be produced in 30 minutes) and therefore have to rely on a copy we obtained some 6 weeks ago.

The analysis we have done on this roll shows that it contains at least 1 million dead voters; goodness knows how many absent voters who now reside in the Diaspora. We know that there are over 350 000 people who are over 85 years old and 109 000 over a hundred years old, one of which – an army officer is 135 years old. We found 838 000 duplicate names – same name, same address, same date of birth, different ID numbers. All the ID's checked were genuine and had been issued by the Registrar General. We found 500 000 people had been moved out of their resident areas to other electoral districts, 45 000 people had their ID numbers changed without their consent.

Registering voters was a nightmare for the MDC – on the Zanu PF side they simply drew up lists of people and handed them in for registration. They moved hundreds of thousands of people into strategic areas in preparation for the Poll. Some 250 000 families – over a million people, were settled on farms taken away from their owners in the peri urban areas. They then opened offices there and "sold" small plots of land to homeless people in the crowded towns. These people were told that they were there by courtesy of Zanu PF and that on the day of the battle they were expected to vote Zanu PF. To reinforce this, their registration details were changed to a selected electoral District and they were told where to vote and that the Party would thereby be able to tell how they voted. Eviction was the threat.

Storm troopers were carefully brought onto the battle field – thousands were accommodated on a farm outside Chitungwiza owned by a Zanu PF company, called Koala Park. They were then registered on target voters rolls in specific Districts. The ranks of the security forces – already over 120 000 people, were swelled to perhaps 200 000 with militia – young adults who were given some form of uniform and paid from Party resources if they could not be smuggled onto the State pay roll. They voted (perhaps, more than once) under instruction.

In the Commercial farming Districts they simply told the 500 000 or so "settlers" that any sign of a vote for the MDC would immediately invite retribution and eviction. The structures of the MDC were smashed and their leadership beaten or killed. In the Tribal areas they told all Chiefs (who were also promised rich rewards) that no voting for the MDC would be tolerated. Headmen – the backbone of rural Africa, were instructed to marshal their people, record names and ID numbers and then arrange for them to vote at a specified polling station. They were told what would happen to them and their families, homes and livestock, if they voted MDC. With three quarters of all seats in the House of assembly in these areas, this alone guaranteed them victory on the day.

Then just to make sure that the battlefield was to their liking, they sold stocks of diamonds (I hear for over $1 billion), used the money to buy lots of things to bribe the locals (just like Livingstone carrying beads and cloth for the "savages" they might encounter), they funded a lavish campaign. They maintained tight control of all media, the security forces and Police, tight control of the Registrar Generals Office, the Electoral Commission and its minions as well as all polling stations.

And so they repeat what they did more crudely in 2008. They pulled off another totally rigged election. They now plan to declare victory ( I am surprised that they have not done so already) and take office.

But it is not business as usual. The MDC has not and will not accept the outcome. Yesterday, confronted with the news coming in from the field, Morgan Tsvangirai said that we would not accept the results. We will not allow the outcome to stand and that he had already informed regional and African Union leaders of this. We could plunge the country into chaos – like Egypt, but that would just play into the hands of the Army and the hardliners who would lock us all up and declare an emergency and run the country through a military Junta (just like Egypt). That we will not allow to happen.

But what regional leaders need to know is that they allowed the Zanu PF to mount what we have called an electoral ambush and just as Mbeki had to step back into the ring in 2008, they must again take responsibility for this mess and sort out a solution. There are several – but they all involve allowing the people of Zimbabwe to make their own choices, without coercion or threats or inducement as to who they want to lead them back to the path of stability and progress.

If they do not, Zimbabwe will again slide back into anarchy and collapse and the collateral damage to the region will be massive. They simply cannot be allowed to permit that to happen. They have a couple of days to make up their minds and move.

Mies pyyhki Mugabella takapuolensa – Heitettiin putkaan

'Shame, shame, shame' Mugabe tells U.S. and Britain

Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe on Thursday berated the United States and former colonial power Britain and its allies for trying to control his nation and its resources, telling them to remove their "illegal and filthy sanctions."

"Shame, shame, shame to the United States of America. Shame, shame, shame to Britain and its allies," Mugabe, 89, said in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly.

"Zimbabwe is for Zimbabweans, so are its resources. Please remove your illegal and filthy sanctions from my peaceful country."

Mugabe said the sanctions imposed by the European Union and the United States violated the U.N. Charter on state sovereignty and condemned them as a "foreign-policy tool to effect regime change".

The United States and the European Union imposed sanctions on Zimbabwean state firms and travel restrictions on Mugabe and dozens of his associates after a violent 2000 election, and at the start of sometimes violent seizures of white-owned commercial farms for black resettlement.

Mugabe did not refer to the lifting of EU sanctions on September 17 against Zimbabwe Mining Development Corp., which will allow the diamond-mining firm to sell its diamonds in Europe.

He said sanctions constituted a form of hostility and violence against his government, which was only trying to redistribute land to the majority of landless Zimbabweans.

"Our small and peaceful country is threatened daily by covetous and bigoted big powers whose hunger for domination and control of other nations and their resources knows no bounds," he said.

He said that if the sanctions were intended to unseat him from power "the results of the recent national elections have clearly shown you what they can do."

Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe since independence from Britain in 1980, overwhelmingly won a July 31 vote extending his 33-year rule. His main rival, Morgan Tsvangirai, denounced the poll as a "huge fraud."

Washington has said the election was flawed and that it does not plan to loosen sanctions against Mugabe's government.

Mugabe said the United States was determined to continue its "relentless persecution" of Zimbabwe, even though the African Union and other regional organizations had supported the election result.

"It appears that when the USA and its allies speak of democracy and freedom they are doing so only in relative terms," Mugabe said. "Zimbabwe, however, refuses to accept that these Western detractors have the right to define democracy and freedom for us.

"We paid the ultimate price for it and we are determined never to relinquish our sovereignty and remain master of our destiny. Zimbabwe will never be a colony again."

Zimbabwen itsevaltias Robert Mugabe juhli 90-vuotis-syntymäpäiviään

Eteläisen Afrikan maata yli 30 vuotta johtanut presidentti kertoi olevansa yhtä nuori ja vetreä kuin 9-vuotias poika leikatessaan syntymäpäiväkakkuansa. Mugabe laukaisi taivaalle 90 ilmapalloa juhlistaakseen vuosipäiväänsä ja jatkuvaa otettansa vallasta.

Zimbabwen valtiota vuodesta 1980 pääministerinä ja vuodesta 1987 presidenttinä johtanut Robert Mugabe juhlisti lauantaina syntymäpäiväänsä. Elinikäinen valtionpäämies täytti 90 vuotta edeltäneenä päivänä perjantaina. Merkkipäivän kunniaksi taivaalle päästettiin 90 ilmapalloa.

Mugabe esiintyi totuttuun tapaansa rehvakkaasti juhlatilaisuudessa.

"One day, millions of men will leave the Southern Hemisphere to go to the Northern Hemisphere. And they will not go there as friends. Because they will go there to conquer it. And they will conquer it with their sons. The wombs of our women will give us victory."

No mutta, tämähän on täysin rasistinen lausunto!  >:(

Broke Zimbabwe spent $16m on Mugabe birthday, wedding, bronze statues

Since it no longer qualifies for World Bank and IMF loans, the Mugabe regime is pleading around the world for $20 million in emergency funds to cover the disaster.

Yet it also now unfolds that President Mugabe used $16 million in taxpayer funds in recent weeks to cover his birthday party, his daughter's wedding, and for giant statues of himself to be built by North Korea that commemorate his uninterrupted rule since 1980, and his status as father of the nation.

The Mugabe spending list, which dribbled out in recent days — has shocked many, since public spending on the president's family is larger than the immediate cost to rescue and aid the flood victims, not to mention a widening number of homeless and hungry in a country that used to be a breadbasket.

The appearance of excess has brought a new grassroots grumbling at the gap between the original liberation ideology of Mugabe and his behavior today.

The spending surfaced at a time when reports of Mugabe ministers salaries, some of which top $40,000 a month, are in contrast with the average salary of Zimbabweans, at $285-$300 a month, and just after a plan to raise teacher's pay by $79 a month fell through.

Mugabe's 90th birthday bash on Feb. 23, for example, where the president cut a cake in front of 10,000 people at a stadium in Harare, and where 90 beasts were killed and grilled for the occasion, cost more than $1 million.

The cost of Bona Mugabe's wedding on March 1, attended by the heads of state of South Africa, Zambia, and Equatorial Guinea at Mugabe's private home in Harare's plush Borrowdale suburb, cost $5 million.

Just after the wedding, plans leaked out that Mugabe's Zanu (PF) government clandestinely signed North Korea, one of its old friends, to build two statues of Mugabe at an estimated cost of $5 million.

The statues were commissioned by Zimbabwe's minister of local government, Ignatius Chombo.

One is a nearly 30-foot high bronze image worth $3.5 million to be placed in Harare; the other is a $1.5 million version to be placed in a $3.8 million museum to be built in Mugabe's rural Zvimba home, in Mashonaland West.

Building statues of leaders is something North Korea has considerable experience doing.

"Mugabe and his government have lost it and all they care about now is the accumulation of wealth and strengthening their hold on power," says Simba Makoni, Mugabe's former finance minister who now leads the small opposition Mavambo-Kusile-Dawn party.

"I do not think that Mugabe and the people who surround him now care about the country's economy anymore. Their actions show a lack of willpower to make the country better. They are no longer the same people who fought for and delivered independence [from Great Britain] in 1980."

Back in November, the Mugabe government said it had an inside track on a $30 billion bailout from China. The amount is whopping, considering that Zimbabwe's annual budget is now some $4.5 billion a year.

Yet the anticipated Chinese bailout has since been steadily reduced in Harare's telling: to $10 billion, then $3 billion, $400 million – and then zero, according to China's ambassador to Harare in recent days.

Meanwhile, in an odd backdrop to the spending, Mugabe's wife, Grace Mugabe, has added to her takeover of a citrus farmed owned by Zimbabwe Stock Exchange-listed Interfresh Holdings.

Mugabe's first lady helped herself to some 4,000 acres of the Mazoe Citrus Estate farm last year, leaving 50 families homeless and then at the turn of this year added another 2,000 acres. The corporate write off of assets is figured at $6 million.
