QuoteProf Ted Cantle said that the idea of multiculturalism in Britain is now "well past its sell-by date" and is often doing more harm than good.
He accused the Government of fuelling separation in communities rather than bringing people together by allowing small groups to claim "special status" – and with it funding – amounting to a form of state-sponsored segregation.

Quote"Communities also received the benefit of targeted funding and action programmes to assist their (often separate) development.
"We have – as a result of this state intervention -hardened and homogenised group identities and created the notion that they are fixed and ascribed, rather than chosen and developmental. "Ironically, many of these identities now appear more immutable, than the now discredited racial boundaries that they have come to replace."

QuoteVoters more likely to back an anti-Muslim party than reject it – poll

Research suggests that many voters are open to views associated with far-right groups

More people would support a political party that pledged to stop all immigration or promised to reduce the number of Muslims than one that encouraged multiculturalism, a survey conducted in the wake of the Olympics reveals.

Despite London 2012 being heralded as a celebration of a diverse society, the research suggests much of the electorate remains open to views traditionally associated with far-right groups.

The survey, conducted by YouGov with 1,750 respondents, found that 41% of people would be more likely to vote for a party that promised to stop all immigration, compared with 28% who said they would be less likely to support a group that promoted such policies

In addition, 37% admitted that they would be more likely to support a political party that promised to reduce the number of Muslims in Britain and the presence of Islam in society, compared with 23% who said it would make them less likely.

QuoteSupport for benefit system at lowest level for three decades

Sympathy for people on welfare benefits has fallen to its lowest ever level, a barometer of British public opinion stretching back 30 years suggests.

The number of people who believe that unemployment benefits are too high has jumped sharply in the past year, with the majority thinking that generous welfare payments prevent people "standing on their own two feet".
