Spanish police said Thursday they had dismantled a gang that kidnapped Morrocan minors who had migrated alone to the country and asked their families for a ransom to free them.

An activist group that operates a hotline for migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea said Friday that nine of the 12 people on a Spain-bound boat drowned after hotline workers notified authorities in both Morocco and Spain of a distress call.

Alarm Phone personnel spoke with one of the three survivors, who confirmed the nine passengers from Senegal died after the boat capsized in the Strait of Gibraltar, activist Maurice Stierl said.

The boat left the Moroccan port city of Tangier early Tuesday. Stierl said his network of activists informed Moroccan and Spanish authorities the migrants needed rescue shortly after the hotline received a first distress call that same morning.

A Moroccan team didn't reach the capsized boat until Wednesday, according to the survivor interviewed by Alarm Phone personnel. He said he was the first person pulled out of the water with a rope, while a woman who had tried to hold onto the same rope eventually drowned.

Spain's Maritime Rescue Service said it dispatched a helicopter to help search for missing passengers Wednesday, when a Moroccan crew retrieved the survivors and recovered one body.

Refugee is found hiding in car's GLOVE box in a desperate attempt to sneak into Europe through Spain

These astonishing images show just how desperate migrants are to get into Europe.

They capture the moment border police found a man in his twenties squeezed behind a car dashboard, trying to enter Spain's North African enclave of Melilla.

Officers said three vehicles were stopped in Beni-Enzar, Morocco, in the space of three hours on Saturday.

Shocking pictures also showed a stowaway hidden in an engine compartment

Border Police said they found another illegal migrant behind a car's rear seats, and a fourth in a dangerous position in a dumper truck, where they were in danger of being crushed.

The migrants, including a 15-year-old girl, were rescued from their cramped surroundings and two of the men, aged 20 and 21, had to receive medical treatment.

Border police said they were showing signs of suffocation, disorientation and pain in the joints due to the 'terrible conditions' in which they travelled.

Three males, all Moroccan nationals and aged 19, 30 and 31, have been arrested on suspicion of people smuggling.

The Public Ministry indicates that the second of them "was the one who carried the engine" of the boat while the first "was in charge of handling the compass" and that the two "acted in common agreement and in collusion" with third parties in Nador (Morocco).

It considers that the trip was organized in a "boat of insufficient size" to take on board 49 people on such a long journey from the Moroccan city and that it lacked security measures such as "lights or life jackets".
