Veneessä mahdollisesti kyydissä olleita henkilöitä etsittiin lukuisten poliisipartioiden toimesta eteläisen Kanarian rannikkoalueella ja asian johdosta tiellä GC-500 oli myös liikennesulkuja. Asiaa ei ole tosin puitu julkisesti Kanarian mediassa. Yksi suurin syy miksi asiaan suhtaudutaan perin vakavasti on pelko erilaisten tartuntatautien tulosta ja leviämisestä Kanarialle.

Espanjan budjettiesitys kaadettiin – sosialistihallitus eroaa

Espanjan sosialistihallituksen esitys valtion tämän vuoden budjetiksi on torjuttu tänään maan parlamentissa.

Esitystä vastaan äänestivät sekä oikeistopuolueet että katalonialaiset separatistit. Espanja jatkaa nyt toistaiseksi viimevuotisella budjetilla.

Tilanne johtaa hallituksen eroon. Pääministeri Pedro Sánchezin odotetaan ilmoittavan ennenaikaisten parlamenttivaalien ajankohdasta piakkoin.

Vaalien ajankohdaksi veikataan alustavasti huhtikuun loppua.

Sosialistien vähemmistöhallituksen ja uusvasemmistoryhmien yhdessä laatiman "sosiaalisen" budjettiesityksen oli määrä muuttaa maan talouspolitiikan suuntaa, lisätä tuntuvasti sosiaalimenoja ja kiristää yritysten sekä suurituloisten verotusta.

Only one in four asylum requests are being accepted in Spain

Spain received a record-breaking 54,000 requests for asylum in 2018, making it one of the five countries in Europe with the highest number of applications. But it accepted a far lower rate of requests than other European countries facing the same demands. In 2018, just 12,000 requests were resolved in Spain, and just one in four asylum seekers was granted protection.

The acceptance rate has fallen from 35% to 24% – the lowest rate of the seven European countries that have the highest number of requests for asylum (Germany, Greece, Sweden, Italy, France and Spain), according to the Spanish Refugee Support Commission (CEAR). Germany tops the list, granting protection to 50% of 185,853 applications last year. "These numbers give us a negative image of our willingness to accept refugees," said CEAR managing director, Estrella Galán.

The figures from 2018 also reveal the backlog at the Asylum Office, which reports to the Interior Ministry. Asylum requests are dealt with slowly. There are currently 78,710 applications yet to be processed, and each can take up to two years to be resolved. In December, the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) government announced an action plan with more staff and resources in an effort to speed up the process and resolve three times the number of requests this year. French Mayor Offers Shelter to Migrants, Despite the Government's Objections

Spain's Far-Right Vox Party Sees Breakout Moment in New Election

Wedged between the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, the Almería province of southern Spain was once a setting for the spaghetti westerns that turned Clint Eastwood into a star.

With Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's decision on Friday to call for new elections, Vox, which got its election breakthrough in El Ejido, will now have a chance to test its appeal on a national stage. France may not use anti-terrorism measures to send migrants back to Spain, EU court finds

EU Court of Justice says countries that have reinstated border controls cannot use them for pushbacks

The Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled against a system used by France to stop irregular immigrants at the border with Spain, where they are sent back invoking anti-terrorist measures.

On Tuesday, the Luxembourg court entered a judgment that finds that an internal border of a member state where border control has been reintroduced cannot be equated with an external border.

This means that the border controls reinstated by Paris to fight terrorist threats cannot be used to push back undocumented migrants into neighboring countries.

France sends thousands of border-crossers back to Spain every year: according to the French border police (PAF), 9,038 migrants were returned between January and October 2018, representing a 26% rise from 2017. Many of these pushbacks are conducted without legal safeguards.

Spain has applauded the court's decision. Sources at the Interior Ministry said that the EU judgment reflects "the position that Spain has always defended at bilateral meetings," and that Paris will now have "to apply the existing readmission agreement between both countries."

But the EU judges found that member states who have reintroduced border controls for security reasons cannot use this as an argument to treat an internal border like an external one. It follows that if France wants to expel an irregular migrant from its territory, it needs to strictly follow bilateral agreements or the European Returns Directive. Unlike fast-track return methods, European law gives individuals between seven and 30 days to voluntarily leave the country before the state may activate deportation procedures.

Spain's National Security Council warns xenophobia is on the rise

Agency says more funding is needed to support migrant integration, given the growing number of arrivals

Spain's National Security Council has warned that xenophobia is on the rise in Spain. In a report, approved on March 15, the council found that while "Spaniards' attitude on immigration continues to be more welcoming" than the European average, there has been a "slight drop in the positive trend" in recent years.

The report sees the need for a strategy, backed by public and private institutions, to support migrant integration in Spain, and adds that more state funding should be put toward this goal. The document also recommends reviewing the overall strategy on fighting racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and other forms of intolerance. The National Security Council adds that a new survey must be done on how Spanish people feel toward migrants, given the apparent rise in xenophobic sentiment.

"We have to launch programs and specific strategic actions to educate society on the positive effects of immigration and the positive value of diversity, while avoiding and counteracting xenophobic discourses," the report explains.

According to the National Security Council, these programs should include initiatives to encourage media professionals to learn about "immigration and its positive aspects and develop a respectful and favorable attitude toward social diversity."

While the report does not mention the far-right political party Vox, which has surged in popularity, it does warn that the "appearance of populist movements in several European countries" is a risk to the stability of the European Union.

Spanish police say they have arrested 17 members of an alleged human trafficking network that threatened Moroccan migrants who sought a refund when attempts to reach Europe by sea failed.

The National Police said Tuesday the busted cell operated from Ceuta, a tiny Spanish enclave in northern Africa.

The alleged traffickers charged between 1,500 and 4,000 euros ($1,700 to $4,500) for taking the Moroccan migrants across the Straits of Gibraltar in high-speed rubber boats. According to police, a hit man threatened the migrants who dared to ask for a refund if they failed to complete the trip.

More than 5,500 migrants have reached Spanish shores this year and 121 have died trying to, according to the International Organization for Migration. Last year, a record 57,000 arrived and more than 800 died.

Vox leader wants to build a wall to stop immigrants coming to Spain – and he wants Morocco to pay for it

The leader of the Spanish far-right party Vox is following in the footsteps of Donald Trump with demands for a wall at the border to stop the flow of immigrants.

Santiago Abascal believes that not only should "insurmountable walls" be built at the borders of Spain's north African enclaves to halt "the wave of illegal immigrants", but that Morocco should foot the bill.

In a new book published this week, called "Santiago Abascal: España vertebrada" Abascal reveals more about the immigration policies of the Spain's newest political party.

He argues that as Morocco " sends waves of immigrants across the border" it should be one to pay for the cost of walls at the borders in Ceuta and Melilla, Spain's two enclaves on the North African coast.

He also argues that the army should be sent in to patrol the borders until the walls are erected and should be given "the necessary orders" to defend them.

Abascal, a 42-year-old from the Basque Country,  also wants to introduce new measures to prevent NGOs from  helping stricken migrants and rescuing them at sea.

He wants to stop "those NGOs that collaborate with mafias and go to the African coast to collect human trade".

Pope in Morocco: Walls, fear-mongering won't stop migration

RABAT, Morocco (AP) — Pope Francis praised Morocco as a model of religious moderation and migrant welcome as he kicked off a trip to the kingdom Saturday, warning that walls and fear-mongering won't stop people from exercising their legitimate right to seek a better life elsewhere.

King Mohamed VI welcomed Francis as he arrived during an unusual rainstorm and began a 27-hour visit aimed at boosting Christian-Muslim ties and showing solidarity with Morocco's ever-growing migrant community.

Morocco last year became the main destination for sub-Saharan African migrants seeking to reach Europe via Spain. The influx has strained the kingdom's resources and fueled anti-migrant sentiment in Spain ahead of the European Union nation's April 28 general election.

Francis told the king that he hoped Morocco would continue to be a model of humanity, welcome and protection for migrants.
