Spanish police say that 10 officers and one migrant have been injured when a large group of migrants tried to escape from a holding center where they await deportation.

Police say that a group of around 80 migrants of Algerian origin tried to break out of the internment center in Madrid early Saturday.

In August, 13 migrants successfully escaped from the same center. Five were arrested shortly after the breakout.

Spain has seen a spike in arrivals of migrants from Africa this year, many attempting the perilous crossing of the Mediterranean Sea in dinghies.

Migrants who have been ordered by a Spanish judge to be deported to their countries of origin can be sent to internment centers for up to 60 days while authorities arrange their return.

Melilla : Spain expels 30 migrants to Morocco

Based on the migration agreement signed between Morocco and Spain, Melilla is planning to expel 30 migrants on Saturday, October the 20th, to the Kingdom.

The 30 migrants were rescued Friday, 19th of October, by the Spanish maritime authorities and transferred later to Melilla.

«These migrants will be deported to Morocco on the basis of the treaty signed between the Moroccan and Spanish governments in 1992», said the Melilla local government yesterday in a statement quoted by El Faro de Melilla.

According to EFE, minors, women and asylum seekers are among the migrants rescued by Spain. «They shouldn't be expelled», a source from the Spanish government told the news agency.

The agreement signed by Rabat and Madrid has been criticized by several NGOs and human rights activists. Amnesty International has urged the Spanish government to stop the procedure.

A migrant died Sunday after around 200 people scaled a fence to enter Spain's Melilla enclave from northern Morocco, local Spanish authorities said.

The man was among the migrants who climbed over two barbed wire fences and appeared to have died of a heart attack, they said in a statement.

"Unfortunately, one of the migrants died... it seems from a cardio-pulmonary arrest," the statement added.

Another 100 migrants from the sub-Saharan region had failed in the attempt to enter Melilla, the statement said.

Three migrants were hurt in the incident, it said, without elaborating.

The border between Melilla and Morocco is protected by two parallel fences standing six metres (20 feet) high and topped with barbed wire.

In June, the Socialist government of Pedro Sanchez said it intended to remove the barbed wire but has so far not done so.

In late August, the Spanish authorities sent about 100 migrants who had entered Ceuta -- a second Spanish enclave in Morocco -- back across the border, sparking an outcry from human rights groups.

Morocco to deport 141 migrants arrested at Spanish enclave fence

Morocco said on Monday it would deport 141 migrants who were arrested a day earlier as they tried to storm a border fence with the Spanish enclave of Melilla.

One migrant died after falling off the seven-metre high metal barrier on Sunday, while 22 others and 12 security personnel were injured, the interior ministry said.

Around 200 people got over into Melilla and were taken to a reception centre, Spanish authorities said. But the rest who failed would be returned to their home countries, Morocco said, without giving details of the nationalities.

Morocco, which other Africans can visit without visas, has become a major gateway for migrants into Europe since Italy' tougher line and EU aid to the Libyan coastguard curbed the number of people coming from Libya.

More than 6,000 migrants have made it to Melilla and Spain's nearby territory Ceuta so far this year, according to the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR.

Others pay smugglers to get them across the 14 km (9 miles) of sea to Spain.

The vast majority of arrivals in Spain are men, primarily from Guinea, Mali and Morocco, the UNHCR says.

Spain returns migrants to Morocco after storming of Melilla enclave

Spain sent 55 migrants back to Morocco on Monday a day after they forced their way into the Spanish territory of Melilla during an assault on the border in which two migrants died and 19 were injured.

A total of 208 migrants entered Melilla on Sunday after climbing over two barbed wire fences which separate the tiny territory from northern Morocco.

Madrid has "readmitted 55 people" who entered Melilla to Morocco, the Spanish central government's representative in the territory said in a statement.

Another 140 migrants have requested asylum, 10 are recovering from their injuries and three are minors, it said.

Spain has become the main entry point for migrants and asylum-seekers looking for a better life in Europe as other EU countries tighten up controls at their borders. A smuggling route through Libya to Italy has also been complicated by conflict and violence there.

One man who took part in the mass storming of the border died shortly after he entered Melilla of a suspected heart attack.

"The preliminary results of the autopsy indicate there is no external injury which caused his death," the statement said.

Another migrant died on the Moroccan side of the border in the attempt to cross over to Melilla.

Civil Liberties MEPs will visit next week the Spanish towns of Ceuta and Melilla to assess the situation regarding migration on both borders with Morocco.

From 29 to 31 October, the delegation will evaluate the security and respect for human rights at the borders, as well as the systems of reception and integration of migrants, paying particular attention to the situation of unaccompanied minors.

They will meet members of the Spanish government, local authorities and representatives of the police forces. They will also exchange views with representatives of NGOs working with migrants and asylum-seekers, such as Melilla Acoge, CEAR, Cruz Roja, UNHCR and Frontera Sur. Finally, the group will visit La Purísima Minors Centre, in Melilla, and the immigration temporary stay centres (CETI) in both Ceuta and Melilla.

Spanish rescuers recover dead baby, save 520 migrants at sea

Spain's maritime rescue service says a baby has died despite efforts by rescuers to save it after a small boat carrying migrants sunk in the Mediterranean Sea. The death came as over 500 others were rescued.

The service says Sunday that the bottom of the rubber boat gave out, tossing 56 migrants into the water when its rescue craft reached it Saturday east of the Strait of Gibraltar. Rescue workers were able to save 55 men, women and children, but could not reanimate the baby.

In all, Spanish rescue workers saved 520 people trying to cross from North Africa to Spain on Saturday. In addition, one boat with 70 migrants arrived at the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.

Over 1,960 people have died trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe this year.

For the first time since the migration crisis began, Spain has received more than 10,000 immigrants during one month, as reported by the International Organization for Migration. By comparison, only around 1,000 migrants arrived in Italy, which had been the most popular destination for immigrants until now.

Spain finds 17 dead migrants, 100 survivors in Mediterranean

Spain's maritime rescue service says at least 17 people have died trying to reach Spain in boats departing from North Africa.

The service says Tuesday that it rescued 80 people Monday, including five women, from two boats and recovered the bodies of 13 dead migrants in the Alboran Sea, part of the western Mediterranean migrant route into Europe. They were all transferred to the Spanish enclave of Melilla, which borders Morocco.

In a separate incident, the Spanish Civil Guard says it found four bodies of migrants and 22 survivors, all men from northern Africa, after the wooden dinghy in which they were travelling hit a reef close to the coast west of the Strait of Gibraltar.

Spain police find 2 bodies in boat carrying migrants, drugs

Spanish police have recovered the bodies of two Moroccans from a boat that reached Spain's coast after crossing the Mediterranean Sea with migrants and a hashish shipment.

Police said Sunday that they found the bodies along with two other people who were suffering from hypothermia on Saturday after they were alerted that a rubber boat had reached a beach near Malaga. Police believe one of the dead could be a minor.

Police also found six kilograms of hashish near the boat. They suspect that the drugs belonged to boat's owner and the pilot, who police were looking for along with three others.

Police have located eight more Moroccan men from a total of 15 people they believe to have been on board.

Twenty-two migrants are missing in the waters off Morocco's Atlantic coast after their boat capsized, state news agency MAP reported on Sunday.

Three people, all with Moroccan nationality, managed to swim to shore and alert the authorities after the vessel hit trouble off the southern province of Tiznit, the outlet said.

It did not give the nationalities of the others on board the boat and said an investigation had been opened into the incident.

Local media said the migrants had been aiming to reach the Canary Islands about 100 kilometres (62 miles) west of the Moroccan coast.

Spain's Ruling Party Pushes to Continue Return of Irregular Migrants

Spain's Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) asked congress to maintain a legal provision regarding the return of irregular migrants who enter the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla.

The PSOE began discussions with other factions in Spain's parliament regarding the revision of the Citizen's Security Law last June, which went into effect in 2015. The law was originally passed by the right-leaning People's Party (PP).

PSOE members submitted an amendment which maintains the immediate expulsion of irregular migrants who cross over to the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla from Moroccan territory. The PSOE alleges that this specific provision "requires a reflection" that should not be considered as the parties debate the current law, but rather reviewed in forthcoming immigration legislation.

The practice of immediately returning an irregular migrant who has stepped foot in Spanish territory is known as a "hot return." Since putting the law into action in 2015, Spain has faced criticism from immigrants rights organization and the European Court of Human Rights for such actions.

Last August, Spain expelled 116 sub-Saharan migrants to Africa after they had reached Ceuta, acting against the wishes of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's coalition government, the coalition of which is primarily composed of PSOE members. In October, Melilla migration officials expelled another 30 irregular migrants back to Moroccan authorities.

The EU is intensifying its support to Morocco to address irregular migration in response to increased migratory pressure along the Western Mediterranean Route.

The additional funding adopted under the EU emergency Trust Fund for Africa will bring the overall migration-related assistance to Morocco to €148 million in 2018. It will help step up the fight against migrant smuggling and trafficking of human beings, including through reinforced integrated border management.

EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, commented: "Together with our Member States, the EU is stepping up its support to Morocco, a key partner for the European Union. The EU and Morocco need to tackle the current challenges together; together we can fight smugglers, save lives, and support people in need. But our cooperation goes far beyond migration: we are working to strengthen our partnership via socio-economic development, decentralisation and integration of the youth - to the benefit of the people in Morocco and in Europe".

Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos said:"Morocco is under particular migratory pressure with flows along the Western Mediterranean increasing. This is why we are intensifying and deepening our partnership with Morocco and increasing our financial support. This funding will help to strengthen border management and the fight against smugglers together but also to improve the protection of migrants and to help prevent irregular departures by supporting economic development in the region. Shared challenges require joint solutions and partnerships, and the EU stands by Morocco."

The new funding is part of the EU's continuous support for Morocco's National Strategy on Migration and Asylum. It helps protect vulnerable migrants, step up the fight against migrant smuggling and trafficking of human beings, while improving the Moroccan authorities' capacity to manage their borders. By the end of the year, the EU will have committed €148 million to Morocco in migration-related assistance, including:

• A programme to support border management in the Maghreb region under the EU Emergency Trust Fund for Africa was adopted in July 2018. Morocco will benefit from €30 million out of this total budget, which helps Moroccan border agencies and related bodies to protect vulnerable migrants, address irregular migration, and dismantle cross-border criminal networks. The programme is already being rolled-out in close cooperation with the Moroccan authorities.
• A newly adopted programme worth €70 million to support Morocco in the fight against migrant smuggling and trafficking of human beings, including through a reinforced management of borders.

The two migrants were picked up in Spain's Bay of Algeciras after crossing from Morocco on the large rubber tire. More than 750 people have died this year while making the sea journey to Spain.

Spain's coast guard on Saturday said it had rescued two young migrants who crossed the Strait of Gibraltar on a truck tire.

The pair were saved following "a call from Morocco to the Spanish sea rescue center warning that two minors were floating on a lorry tire in the Bay of Algeciras," a coast guard spokesman said.

"We mobilized a rescue vessel and warned all the boats in the area. A ferry called us to say that they had spotted them," he added.

The two minors were then taken aboard a coast guard vessel.

The migrants, whose age and nationality were not known, were taken to the Port of Algeciras.

Spain police break up Moroccan migrant smuggling ring

Police arrested seven suspected leaders of the ring

An alleged people trafficking network which "operated like a travel agency" and smuggled around 600 Moroccans into Spain by sea this year was foiled by Spanish police, authorities said on Monday.

The ring recruited its "customers" mainly in the northern Moroccan city of Larache, charging "at least" 2,500 euros ($2,825) per person for the dangerous crossing, police said in a statement.

"The organisation operated like a sort of travel agency" which took the migrants to Spain, picked them up from the coast and then transported them by car to "safe houses".

From there, they took them to their desired destination in the country, usually in Catalonia or the northern Basque Country, the statement added.

Police arrested seven suspected leaders of the ring, including its Moroccan-based chief, who was charged with recruiting migrants as part of the operation.

The network smuggled around 600 migrants into Spain this year, earning at least 1.5 million Euros, the statement added.

Espanja­n rannikkovartiosto löysi tänään veneestä 11 kuollutta ja 33 elävää "siirtolaista", joista yksi kuoli myöhemmin. Kaikki olivat Saharan eteläpuolisesta Afrikasta. Lisäksi etsitään kolmea muuta venettä, joista kahdessa on yli 55 matua.

Spain finds 11 dead migrants in boat, rescues 33

Spain's Maritime Rescue Service on Thursday found 11 dead migrants in a boat off the country's southern coast and rescued 33 other passengers, one of whom later also died.

All of the migrants were from sub-Saharan Africa, a spokeswoman with the service told The Associated Press. A tweet sent Thursday by the Spanish Red Cross said that two women, one of them pregnant, were among those who died.

Rescuers had been looking for the boat about 11 miles (18 kilometers) south of the city of Almeria for two days, said the Maritime Rescue Service official, who was not authorized to be named in media reports.
