Rabat – Police in Tangier disrupted a human trafficking network on Friday evening. The network was organizing irregular migration. Police arrested four suspects between the ages of 24 and 44.

A statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said that the police arrested three Moroccans and a fourth suspect of an unspecified nationality. Police also arrested 22 irregular migrants from sub-Saharan Africa.

Police placed the defendants in custody while  further investigation is underway. With the supervision of the public prosecutor, possible links with other criminal networks in Morocco and abroad are under investigation.

Morocco has dismantled a dozen irregular migration networks throughout the year. The European Union has provided Morocco financial aid while the North African country tries to curb migration to Spain.

Royal Moroccan Navy Rescues 202 Irregular Migrants in Mediterranean

Rabat – The Royal Moroccan Navy rescued 202 irregular migrants, mostly sub-Saharans onboard unsafe boats, in the Mediterranean Sea on December 22 and 23.

The migrants included women and children, a military source has said.

The source added that five bodies were also found in these boats, adding that the rescued people received the necessary first aid as they were found in bad condition. The migrants were transported to the ports of Nador, Tangier, and Al Hoceima.

A boat carrying people from North Africa to Europe has been intercepted off the coast of Spain by a rescue ship.

The migrants, including small children, disembarked on Christmas Eve from a port in Malaga, southern Spain after being picked up in the Mediterranean Sea.

Photographs show people waiting to get off the boat queuing in cramped conditions and chilly weather before sunrise. Many are wrapped in blankets provided by rescuers trying to keep warm.

It was not clear how many people were on the boat, or the exact place it had set off from.

124 migrants rescued at sea off Spain in 48 hours

More than 124 migrants aboard four boats have been rescued in the past 48 hours in the Alboran Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar, the majority of whom are from sub-Saharan Africa, according to sources with Spain's Maritime Rescue service.

Between December 24 and 25 it rescued 253 people on seven boats in the Western Mediterranean Sea, where migratory pressure remains high.

According to figures from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), since the start of the year through December 19, more than 63,085 migrants have illegally entered Spain, nearly triple the 28,707 registered in 2017.

Morocco's navy on Thursday rescued 367 mostly sub-Saharan migrants in the Mediterranean sea after they attempted to reach Spain, a military source told AFP.

The rescued migrants included women and children who were "in difficulty on board several makeshift vessels", the source said.

"They were all brought back safely by navy units to the nearest ports."

Morocco stopped 68,000 attempted illegal migrants and dismantled 122 "active criminal networks" in the first nine months of 2018, according to a recent official count.

Migrant desperation laid bare as two discovered hidden inside sealed mattresses

Two migrants have been discovered hidden inside mattresses strapped to the top of a van attempting to cross from Africa into Europe, according to local reports.

Border guards arrested the migrants, reportedly of sub-Saharan origin, after making the discovery at the Farhana border crossing, a check-point between Melilla, a Spanish enclave on the north African coast, and Morocco, according to Spanish news site El Periodico.

It is believed to be the first time mattress concealment has been discovered as a way to smuggle migrants, but local reports claim it could be a new technique for organised criminals aiming to profit from people's desperation to enter Europe.

The news comes just days after a charity rescue vessel carrying 311 mainly African migrants plucked off the coast of Libya docked in Spain, ending a traumatic journey which saw them spend Christmas at sea.

A spokeswoman for Spain's coastguards told AFP they had rescued 111 migrants on Tuesday in the Strait of Gibraltar and Alboran Sea.

Spanish authorities have stopped a group of 33 migrants, including 13 minors, as they attempted to enter the country.

The migrants arrived in the area of Jameos del Agua in the North-East of Lanzarote, the Canary Islands, today.

The Spanish Civil Guard released two pictures taken on the beach which show some of the 33 people and their boat in the moments after they arrived.

Palautuksia on tehty keskimäärin 30 kappaleen päivävauhtia. Palautukset sujuvat hyvin Marokkoon ja Algeriaan, mutta Saharan eteläpuolelle palautukset tökkivät. Spain deporting an average of 30 migrants a day since 2013

Figures show that Moroccans and Algerians topped the list of deportations due to bilateral agreements

Spain deported 54,963 immigrants between 2013 and 2017, representing an average of 30 people a day, according to an Interior Ministry reply to a query by Senator Maribel Mora, of the leftist Unidos Podemos group.

The figures show a sustained decrease in deportations over the period, with a slight rebound in 2017. A total of 13,985 people were sent back in 2013, another 11,817 in 2014, 10,594 in 2015, 9,241 in 2016 and 9,326 in 2017.

Moroccans and Algerians are, in that order, the nationals who were most often targeted for deportation, representing 30,832 and 4,479 of the total for the period. This reflects the bilateral agreements that both countries have signed with Spain to facilitate the return of undocumented migrants.

Citizens of Morocco accounted for 19% of the 28,572 undocumented migrant arrivals in 2017, while Algerians represented 17%, according to Interior Ministry figures obtained by filing an information request backed by Spain's Transparency Law.

Sub-Saharan Africa

Deportations of people from sub-Saharan Africa, who make up the bulk of irregular immigration to Spain, are significantly lower due to identification difficulties and to the lack of bilateral agreements with many of their home countries.

The exceptions are Senegal, which took back 757 people on the basis of a 2006 deal with Spain, followed by Nigeria, which accepted 608 people back, and Mali (231). Both these countries signed an immigration agreement with Spain in 2007.

Senator Maribel Mora has noted that every year, the same scenario unfolds: hundreds of sub-Saharan migrants are taken to CIE holding centers, then allowed to go free once the 60-day detention deadline expires because authorities were unable to return them to their home countries.

In 2017, for instance, citizens of Gambia and Côte d'Ivoire represented 24% of the 8,237 people held at CIE centers. Only six of them were deported.

"What this evidences is a disproportionate application of internment measures against citizens of certain countries," said Senator Mora, whose group has criticized the conditions at these centers.

The figures obtained through the senator's query include deportations from CIE centers and those performed directly from police precincts without going through the usual judicial procedures. They include both "expulsiones" and "devoluciones," two different administrative procedures.

Other nationalities represented in the deportation figures for 2013-2017 include Colombia (2,576), Bolivia (1,412), Ecuador (1,369), Brazil (1,067) and the United States (128).

Some EU citizens were also sent back, generally for having committed crimes against state security such as drug or arms trafficking. This list includes Romanians (1.530), Portuguese (277), French (128) and Italians (101).

Spanish Police Arrest Suspected Migrant Smugglers

Spanish police say they have broken up a gang that smuggled people and drugs by boat from Morocco into Spain, charging migrants up to 2,000 euros ($2,300) a trip.

A police statement Wednesday said the group earned around 25,000 euros for each boat that made it across the Mediterranean, often carrying both people and hashish in the unsafe vessels.

Investigators estimate the gang had brought more than 500 migrants into southern Spain's Andalucia region since last August.

Voxin suoma tuki ei ole ilmaista. Se haluaa myös vaikuttaa aluehallituksen politiikkaan.

Andalusiassa on korkea työttömyys, iso osa Välimeren ylittävistä siirtolaisista rantautuu maakunnan rannoille ja korruptiossa riittää kitkettävää.

Juuri näissä asioissa Vox tahtoo äänensä kuuluviin. Työttömyyden torjunta ja korruption vastaisuus on kirjattu uuden hallituksen ohjelmaan.

Hallitus ei taipune Voxin vaatimiin maahanmuuttajien massakarkotuksiin, mutta joutuu nostamaan maahanmuuton rajoitukset jollain toisella tavalla toimintalistalleen.

Andalusialainen Handmaid's Tale
Suurimman polemiikin Vox on toistaiseksi aiheuttanut vaatimuksillaan muokata perheväkivallan kieltävää lakia. Voxin näkemys on, että laki suosii naisia ja sortaa miehiä.

Hallitus ei lähde lakia aukaisemaan, mutta Voxin kovat puheet ovat jääneet elämään julkiseen keskusteluun. Vox syyttää juuri lain yhteydessä radikaalia feminismiä miesten alistamisesta.

Todellisuus ei varsinaisesti tue Voxin tulkintaa. Perheväkivaltaa on Espanjassa tilastoitu vuodesta 2003 lähtien, ja tänä aikana lähes tuhat naista on kuollut perheväkivallan seurauksena.

Puolue tahtoo myös poistaa feministijärjestöiltä tuen ja samaan syssyyn muuttaa tasa-arvoasiain ministeriön perheministeriöksi. Samaan logiikkaan kuuluu, että Vox tahtoo rajoittaa aborttioikeutta ja vastustaa homoliittoja.

Tasa-arvoa ja naisten asemaa ajavat järjestöt ja henkilöt ovat olleet kauhuissaan Voxin linjauksista. Puolueen vaalimenestyksen myötä Handmaid's Tale -maailman on sanottu rantautuneen Andalusiaan.

Voisi kuvitella, että Voxin machohenkiset julistukset vetosivat vaaleissa enemmän miehiin kuin naisiin. Näin ei ole – äänestäjissä oli yhtä paljon niin miehiä kuin naisiakin. (siirryt toiseen palveluun)

Vaarakallio mainitsee "maahanmuuttajien massakarkotukset", mutta ei sitä, mistä maahanmuuttajista on kyse ja mihin karkotukset perustuisivat. Karkotus kun tarkoittaa sitä, että henkilöllä on ollut oleskelulupa. Kuten arvata saattaa, Vox ajoi vaalikampanjassaan laittomien siirtolaisten palautuksia.

Edit: Hallituksen perustelut päätökselle ovat, että alus ei noudata kansainvälisiä meripelastussääntöjä ja että se operoi Espanjan meripelastusalueen ulkopuolella ja että mikään lähellä oleva maa ei suostuisi ottamaan pelastettuja vastaan ja heidän kuljettaminen Espanjaan asti olisi liian riskialtista matkustajille ja miehistölle.

Spain stops migrant rescue boat Open Arms from setting sail

Spanish migrant rescue charity Proactiva Open Arms said on Monday that Spanish authorities were preventing its ship from setting sail in the Mediterranean to try to save migrants.

"We are blocked in a port once again. Port Authority in Barcelona denied permission to Open Arms to sail #Med Central," the charity based near Barcelona wrote in a tweet.

In a statement, Spain's public works ministry, which controls the Port Authority, said the Open Arms "fails to comply with several precepts of international regulations governing rescues at sea."

The ship operates off the Libyan coast, a region where Spain does not have any jurisdiction in terms of maritime rescue, it added.

Since the Open Arms lacks permission to dock from nations near where it operates, "it has had to cross the Mediterranean for several days to disembark rescued migrants, putting the safety of the ship, its crew and the people on board at risk," the statement added.

Spain is responsible for people's asylum applications. There, the migrants would have to stay first. These are the EU rules. Research by WELT AM SONNTAG showed, however, that some of them continue to travel to Central Europe - and that the breach of the international agreement is at least promoted by the Spanish state by organizing and paying for bus transfers from Andalusia to the north of the country. From there people flew on to Brussels, others took another bus to France. Some want to go to Germany.

The opposition therefore demands that the government respond consistently. "Whether it concerns violations of individual officials or systematic breach of law by Spanish authorities: The Federal Government and the European Commission must urgently stop this practice," says Linda Teuteberg , migration policy spokeswoman for the FDP parliamentary group.

She speaks of a "clear violation of European law". The case shows that the structural problems of the European asylum system have still not been resolved. Teuteberg therefore brings tighter controls at the German border into play: "If a genuine European solution is not possible, we must create the conditions for national measures in Germany in order to be able to get a grip on migration in the event of a new crisis."

Spain's maritime rescue service says it has saved 472 people who were trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea into Europe over the past two days.

The service says that 17 people, including one woman, were rescued early Thursday from two inflatable rafts like those used at beaches and swimming pools.

The spokeswoman, who wasn't authorized to be identified in media reports, said that 455 migrants were rescued Wednesday - 124 in the Strait of Gibraltar, and 331 further east.

IOM, the UN Migration Agency, reports that 4,216 migrants and refugees have entered Europe by sea through the first 16 days of 2019, an increase that nearly doubles the total (2,365) arriving during the same period last year. Over the past three days (13-16 January) IOM reports arrivals to Spain more than doubled from 1,609 to 3,367 individuals.

Through mid-month, irregular migrant arrivals by sea to Spain are nearly 80% of all Mediterranean arrivals of this type; moreover that total nearly matches all arrivals of this type to Spain through the first three months of 2018, a period during which IOM reported 3,369 irregular migrant arrivals to Spain by sea.

Deaths on the three main Mediterranean Sea routes through these first 16 days of January are at 83 individuals, compared with 199 deaths during the same period in 2018.

Morocco foils 89,000 illegal migration attempts in 2018: interior ministry

MARRAKECH (Reuters) - Morocco stopped 89,000 people from illegally migrating in 2018, up 37 percent compared to a year earlier, the interior ministry said on Thursday, as the country became the main launchpad in the Mediterranean for Europe-bound migrants.

Morocco, which other Africans can visit without visas, has become a major gateway for migrants into Europe since Italy's tougher line and EU aid to the Libyan coastguard curbed the number of people coming from Libya.

In 2018, Moroccan authorities dismantled 229 migrant trafficking networks, the interior ministry's figure showed.

Some 80 percent of illegal migrants intercepted in 2018 were foreigners, 29,715 migrants were saved at sea while 5,608 opted for a voluntary return to their home countries, the ministry said.

About 170 people are feared to have died in two separate Mediterranean shipwrecks, the UNHCR says.

The Italian navy reports a ship sank off the coast of Libya with 117 people on board, while Moroccan and Spanish authorities have tried to find a lost boat in the western Mediterranean.

Pope Francis has met with the founder of a Spanish aid group whose ship has been blocked from leaving port to resume rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean.

It's at least the second time that Francis has met with Oscar Camps, founder of Proactiva Open Arms.

The Vatican said Saturday that Francis also met Friday with the mayors of Madrid and Barcelona, both of whom represent far-left, pro-migrant parties.

Last month, Spanish authorities blocked the Open Arms' ship from leaving Barcelona's port, saying it violated maritime regulations on previous trips requiring rescued migrants to be brought to the nearest port.
