Epätoivo syntyy siitä pelosta, että jos ei pääsekään Välimeren yli ja siitä sitten Hölmölään taikaseinän ääreen, tulevaisuudessa joutuukin elättämään itsensä esimerkiksi töitä tekemällä.

Kyllähän sellainen uhka nyt helposti vetää miehen epätoivoon.

Miksi lehdet aina puhuvat "epätoivosta"?

Marokossa ei ole mitäään hengen- eikä nälänhätää. Tyhmyys + ahneus selittää näitä uhkarohkeita tempauksia yhtä hyvin.

Muistelen työnantajallani olleen Marokossa olleen oikein hyvin maksavia asiakkaita vuosia sitten. Tilanne ei muuttunut niinkään epätoivon vallattua maan, vaan firman omistuspohjan ja tuotteiden suurvaltapoliittisten ulottuvuuksien muutosten vuoksi. Tuotteet ovat sellaisia ettei niille juuri ole markkinoita maissa, joissa ei olisi esim. laajassa käytössä olevia kehittyneitä teknologioita, ja tuskinpa niihin olisi panostettu jos kansa (ja kunniavieraat) olisi koko ajan kuolon partaalla.

Euroopan maiden typeryyksissään röyhkeimmille opportunisteille luomat vetovoimatekijät yhdistettynä Afrikan mantereen suuriin opportunistimassoihin ovat se ongelma. Ei todellakaan se, että Marokossa vallitsisi jokin epätoivo tai hätätila joka suorastaan pakottaisi ihmiset pyrkimään henkensä kaupalla Eurooppaan.

Espanja pelasti yli 400 siirtolaista Välimereltä

Espanjan viranomaiset kertoivat sunnuntaina pelastaneensa yhteensä 408 Afrikasta Eurooppaan pyrkinyttä siirtolaista Välimereltä viikonlopun aikana.

Meripalvelu sanoi pysäyttäneensä sunnuntaina 115 siirtolaista, jotka matkustivat viidessä pienessä veneessä Gibraltarinsalmessa. Lauantaina meripalvelu pelasti 293 siirtolaista yhdeksästä veneestä.

Espanja on eräs vilkkaimmista laittoman maahanmuuton väylistä Eurooppaan. Italiaan saapuu kuitenkin vielä enemmän ihmisiä, jotka lähtevät vaaralliselle matkalle Välimeren yli Libyasta.

Espanjan meripelastusviranomaiset kertovat kuljettaneensa turvaan 240 ihmistä yhteensä 11 pieneltä veneeltä. Salakuljettajat toivat niillä ihmisiä Pohjois-Afrikasta varhain sunnuntaiyönä.

Ainakin yksi ihminen ehti hukkua. Vedessä kellunut ruumis kiinnitti viranomaisten huomion, kun he olivat pelastamassa ihmisiä kauempana purjehtineelta salakuljettajien veneeltä. Vasta sitten he löysivät pienet kumiveneet.

Myöhemmin sunnuntaina Tunisiasta lähtenyt, siirtolaisia kuljettanut kalastaja-alus upposi lähellä Tunisian rannikkoa. Ainakin 11 ihmistä hukkui.

Tunisian rannikkovartiosto pelasti 67 "Tunisiasta ja muista maista kotoisin olevaa ihmistä".

Sekä pelastuneiden että hukkuneiden etsintä oli sunnuntai-iltapäivänä yhä käynnissä Tunisian rannikolla.

Spain wants to remove barbed wire from border fences at Ceuta and Melilla

Spain's new interior minister said Thursday he will "do everything possible" to remove barbed wire from border fences that surround the Spanish territories of Ceuta and Melilla, to help reduce injuries to migrants seeking sanctuary in Europe.

The six-metre (20-foot) parallel fences, often topped with barbed wire or coils of razor blades, form part of the Spain-Moroccan border and curve round the two North African enclaves, the only land connection between Europe and Africa.

Surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea on one side and Morocco on the other, the territories are regularly targeted by migrants who try to get inside by climbing the fences -- sometimes resulting in serious injuries.

"I will do everything possible so that the barbed wire at the gates of Ceuta and Melilla are removed," Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said during an interview with radio Cope, adding it is a priority.

"It is not reasonable or acceptable to see people jumping over the fences, we can act before, at the origin", in the countries where migrants come from.

In Ceuta, 25 migrants have been treated for cuts caused by the barbed wire so far this year, including ten who required hospital treatment, according to the Spanish Red Cross.

A 30-year-old Senegalese man lost his life in 2009 after piercing an artery on the barbed wire in Ceuta, according to Spanish media reports which cited a copy of his autopsy.

"We are talking about solidarity, of respecting people's dignity, while controling the migratory flow, one does not impede the other," Grande-Marlaska said.

Last year a parliamentary commission led by the Socialist party, in power since June 1, demanded in vain that the ruling conservative government at the time remove the barbed wire from the two territories.

Spain brings back free healthcare for illegal migrants

Spain's new socialist government promised on Friday it would restore free healthcare for undocumented migrants, a right removed by the former administration as part of cost-cutting.

The move is the latest migrant-friendly initiative by the government of Pedro Sanchez, who offered on Monday to take in a rescue ship that was drifting in the Mediterranean sea with 629 migrants on board. Italy and Malta had refused to let it dock.

The government will draw up a draft law with the proposal, it said, which must be approved by parliament. Although the Socialists have a minority of 84 seats in the 350-member assembly, most parties back the proposal and it seemed certain to be approved.

"Healthcare is a right and the protection of health is essential," government spokeswoman Isabel Celaa told a news conference.

Spain offers universal healthcare to its citizens. The former centre-right government of Mariano Rajoy withdrew the right to general healthcare for undocumented migrants in 2012 as part of a programme of spending cuts.

The government later reinstated some rights like access to emergency healthcare in 2015, but fell short of returning full coverage to an estimated 800,000 people residing in Spain without papers.

Spain receives a tiny percentage of the total asylum claims in Europe, and of those received it accepts fewer than the EU average, according to the Spanish Commission for Refugees.

However, the EU border agency expects illegal migration will rise again in 2018, potentially turning migration into a more pressing issue for Sanchez.

The spike in arrivals comes as Spain prepares to receive another 630 migrants after Italy and Malta refused to let the aid boat Aquarius land earlier this week. The Aquarius and two Italian ships carrying the migrants are expected to arrive at the eastern port of Valencia on Sunday.

At least 792 migrants have died crossing the Mediterranean so far this year, according to the United Nations.

The Latest: Spain rescues migrants on rubber boats at sea

Spain's maritime rescue service says it has brought to safety 152 migrants attempting to enter Europe by sea, while a boat with 54 more people is still missing.

The service said Monday that it found three inflatable rubber boats carrying a total of 102 migrants in the western Mediterranean Sea, while a rescue vessel transferred to Almeria 50 people which had docked on the tiny Spanish island of Alboran.

Rescuers were also trying to locate a boat with 54 migrants on board believed to be in an area closer to the Strait of Gibraltar.

The so-called western Mediterranean migration route into Spain has seen an uptick in traffic lately, with more than 13,000 arrivals in 2018, according to the United Nations, 1,400 of them since last Friday.

'Aquarius' migrants begin new life with a SIM card and a haircut

EL PAÍS follows four Algerians from the rescue ship as they enter this new chapter

They don't like cameras but they were surrounded by them when they left the refugee center yesterday. Reporters asked them where they were from, their names, how they were feeling but only one of them spoke English and they were in a rush.

Salidm, Anwer, Djamel and Yacine (not their real names) are four young Algerians who arrived in Valencia aboard the Orione, one of the two Italian Coast Guard vessels that accompanied the Aquarius to Valencia. The four met in Libya where they had gone to save up money. On June 9, they boarded a precarious 12-meter long boat with around 100 other people. They paid €1,000 for the journey. Their boat capsized. After being rescued in the Libyan Sea, the four spent eight days on a ship under the open sky without anything to keep them warm.

The Spanish government agreed to welcome the rescue boat and now the Algerians have a new start in life. But first they need to do basic things, like shave their prickly beards and buy a SIM card, nail clipper, and a new shirt so they are not all dressed the same. They don't know where to go. But while their shelter appears to be in the middle of nowhere, it is just a few kilometers from the shopping center in Cheste. EL PAÍS accompanied them on their first outing in Spain.

"There's no one in the street!" they exclaim. It's midday and even in the shade the heat is unbearable. Their main goal is to buy a SIM card so they can contact their families. Their families know that they are alive because they saw them on French television. They were also able to make a call as soon as they arrived on Sunday.

It has been a long time since the four left their homes. Yacine, a computer programmer who worked at a restaurant in Tripoli, left three years ago. He didn't want to come to Europe but when the war broke out he saw no other option. "I couldn't live there. They rob you of everything. If you don't give them what you have, they kill you. That's how I lost my documents. It is a terrible country," he explains.

In their bag, they carry three important documents – a permit to stay in Spain for 45 days, a request for international protection and a document expressing their desire to go to France – but none can be used to buy a SIM card. They don't have any identification, only a yellow bracelet on their wrist.

"Four came in this morning and I couldn't do anything for them. The system forces you to introduce an identification document," explains the shopkeeper. As they wait, they play on the Foosball machine against two kids who have just finished school.

In the next couple of days, French agents from OFPA, the office in charge of asylum seekers, will arrive in Valencia to review each of the requests to enter Spain. They have a lot of work ahead. Migrants on board 'Aquarius' granted 45-day special permit to stay in Spain

The 630 migrants who were rescued by the humanitarian ship Aquarius and turned away by Italy and Malta have been granted special permission to stay in Spain for 45 days. The news comes after the immigrants arrived in Valencia on Sunday on three vessels after an arduous eight-day journey at sea.
