Two asylum seekers 'raped a man at the hostel where they lived in late night assault'

Two asylum seekers have been accused of raping a man at the hostel where they live.

Aram Sulaimani, 29, and Harem Hussan, 20, were arrested after the alleged late night assault at Kennedy House in Leicester.

Appearing in court on February 21, they each faced two charges under the 2003 Sexual Offences Act.

Neither entered a plea and both were remanded in custody.

Kennedy House, which takes in asylum seekers while their claims are being assessed, is run by contractor G4S for the Home Office.

A motorist, who caused an accident after driving under the influence of alcohol - which he consumed illegally - will be given 80 lashes and two months in jail, according to a court verdict.

The Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi has upheld earlier rulings by lower courts that handed down the sentence to the Arab man after he was found guilty of illegal drinking of alcohol despite being a Muslim.

The court also gave him two months in jail for driving under the influence of alcohol, causing an accident that injured other drivers, damaging of three other vehicles and damaging public property.

More than 300 taxi drivers in Denbighshire have completed training to help spot the signs of child sexual exploitation.

The council brought in the mandatory training last year after the Rotherham child sex abuse scandal inquiry found taxi drivers had played a "prominent role" in the abuse.

Eleven drivers who have not yet attended the course could have their licences suspended unless they comply.

Iso juhlaseurue on karannut ainakin kaksi kertaa maksamatta ravintolasta Espanjassa – poliisi jäljillä

Poliisi on ottanut yhden miehen kiinni tapauksiin liittyen. Laskuja on jäänyt maksamatta tuhansia euroja.

Luoteis-Espanjassa on paljastunut ainakin kaksi tapausta, joissa suuri juhlaseurue on kadonnut ravintolasta maksamatta laskua. Poliisi on ottanut yhden miehen kiinni tapauksista epäiltynä.

Tiedotusvälineet uutisoivat viime viikolla 120 ristiäisvieraan paenneen ravintolasta Bembibren kaupungissa kesken jälkiruoan viime viikon maanantaina. Vieraat olivat maksaneet 900 euron varausmaksun, mutta jättivät jälkeensä 2 000 euron laskun.

Tapauksen käytyä ilmi paljastui, että 20 kilometrin päässä sijaitsevassa Ponferradan kaupungissa oli tapahtunut samantyyppinen tapaus samoihin aikoihin.

Häitä viettänyt seurue oli lähtenyt ravintolasta yllättäen maksamatta 10 000 euron laskua. Kyse oli ilmeisesti samasta romanialaisesta seurueesta.

Poliisi edennyt tutkimuksissa

Poliisi on pidättänyt romanialaisen miehen, jonka henkilötiedot vastaavat ravintoloihin varauksia tehneen henkilön tietoja. Poliisi etsii myös toista miestä, joka on jo saattanut paeta maasta. Enempää poliisi ei kerro tutkinnasta.

Joukkopaon uhriksi joutuneen Carmen-ravintolan isäntä Antonio Rodriguez kertoi kuitenkin uutistoimisto AP:lle, ettei hän odota saavansa rahojaan koskaan takaisin.

– Oli todella lannistavaa, kun näin heidän lähtevän. Tiesin, etten voinut tehdä mitään, koska he olivat valtavia lihaksikkaita miehiä, hän sanoi.

2017-03-09 Baltic Times: Latvian customs thwart drug contraband attempt by refugees from Somalia

Riga - The Customs Police of the Latvian State Revenue Service have intercepted several large shipments of psychotropic substances that had arrived from Kenya and had been organized by Somalis, who had been granted the refugee status in Austria and Slovenia, the State Revenue Service said.

The first shipment, delivered by air from Turkey contained 432 kilograms of stuff described in the documents as dried henna leaves but the laboratory tests showed that these were in fact leaves of Catha edulis, also known as khat, a psychotropic substance of plant origin.

Another shipment containing 44 kilograms of similar leaves, also described in the documents as henna leaves, was seized on the same day in the Riga airport, and three days later the customs officers seized another shipment from Kenya, weighing 106 kilograms and allegedly containing household goods, but actually the container was again full with khat leaves.

A criminal proceeding was opened, and three persons were promptly detained in Riga on suspicions of contraband of psychotropic substances.

Altogether 582 kilograms of psychotropic substances were seized, and their street value may exceed EUR 500,000.

Belgiassa 24-vuotiaalle naiselle syyte terrorismista - Eurooppaan suunniteltiin uutta iskua

Molly B.-niminen 24-vuotias nainen on asetettu syytteeseen terrorismirikoksista Belgiassa, kertoivat syyttäjät Brysselissä torstaina uutistoimisto AFP:n mukaan. Naisen uskotaan avustaneen ihmisiä uuden terrori-iskun suunnittelemisessa Eurooppaan.

Terrori-iskun uhka on Belgiassa edelleen korkealla tasolla. Alle kahden viikon kuluttua tulee kuluneeksi vuosi Brysselin terrori-iskusta, jossa kuoli 32 ihmistä metroasemalla ja lentokentällä. Isku oli äärijärjestö Isisin tekemä. Myös Pariisin tuhoisa, 130 ihmishenkeä marraskuussa 2015 vaatinut terrori-isku suunniteltiin Belgiassa.

UK Court Delays Terror Trial for Muslim to Fast for Ramadan

The trial of a mechanic accused of terror-related offences has been delayed so he can fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Courts in Islamic countries commonly do not sit during this time, and the practice could become increasing common in the UK following the decision.

Taha Hussain, 21, is accused of downloading and distributing material glorifying the Paris terror atrocities, The Telegraph reports.

He is said to have sent WhatsApp files entitled: "Paris Outrage: A Muslim Perspective." Another file entitled "Charlie Hebdo to Jagrity" was sent on the encrypted Telegram messaging service.

Appearing on Wednesday via videolink at Kingston Crown Court in London, Mr. Hussain denied the ten counts of disseminating terrorist publications brought against him.

A trial had originally been scheduled for 30 May, but was moved to a later date at the Old Bailey by Judge Paul Dodgson.

Judge Dodgson explained: "I only have to think about myself not eating or drinking for 19 hours. This is not to be taken as a precedent for all trials involving devout Muslims.

"The date was fixed administratively but no consideration had been made for Ramadan. I would not be confident for someone to stand trial if I looked up I thought he's not fit to be here."

He told Mr. Hussain: "Your trial is going to take place at the Old Bailey either on June 26 or perhaps July 10."

The Charlie Hebdo attack saw al-Qaeda-linked militants shoot dead 10 journalists and two policemen in the magazine's office in Paris in 2015 after the satirical publication printed a cartoon of the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

Ramadan takes place in the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The month lasts 29–30 days and is due to begin on 26 May this year.

While fasting from dawn until sunset, Muslims refrain from consuming food, drinking liquids, smoking, and engaging in sexual relations.

A man who threatened, slapped and strangled a woman during a horrific sex attack has been jailed.

Nyasha Malvern Makunike, 26, of no fixed address, subjected his victim to the brutal attack in August 2016.

Minshull Street Crown Court heard his victim walked into a shop in Bury with her two young children in a distressed state.

She asked the shopkeeper to call police after she was violently raped by an attacker in the early hours of the previous day.

During a police interview the woman said she was strangled during the sickening attack.

Makunike also threatened the woman and slapped her.

He was found guilty of two counts of rape, actual bodily harm, sexual assault and none other counts of assault and harassment.

Makunike will also be placed on the sex offenders register for life.

Det Con Dave Looby, of GMP's Bury borough, said: "Makunike subjected his victim to what can only be described as a brutal attack which left her terrified and fearing for her life.

"The courage that she has shown in coming forward and helping police take this dangerous man off the streets of Bury is nothing short of tremendous.

"I hope the sentence passed here today will bring her some comfort knowing that her attacker has been brought to justice."

Hapless thieves rob Leeds jeweller - but steal only his lunchbox

THREE hapless robbers who planned a 'sophisticated' jewellery heist ended up stealing a box of Tupperware and some sandwiches. A court heard how one of the raiders was almost blind and another was a medical sciences student.

The trio targeted a husband and wife who own a Leeds jewellery shop shortly after they closed their business premises for the night.

The couple were holding bags when they were attacked as they walked through Roundhay on October 27, 2015.

The husband was punched in the face as the three men, all wearing balaclavas, carried out the robbery and fled with the bags.

Leeds Crown Court heard the robbers believed the attackers were carrying high value jewellery. In reality they contained groceries and a lunchbox.

Jailing the men to a total of 21 years, judge Tom Bayliss, QC, said: "The inference I draw is that you were targeting what you thought to be very high value, easily saleable jewellery.

"That, gentlemen, is what you were expecting. In the event you came away with virtually nothing but Tupperware and sandwiches.

"It was a professionally planned, commercial robbery carried out with a degree of sophistication but ultimately gaining you nothing but your convictions."

The men were found guilty of robbery, assault with intent to rob and theft after a trial. Qasim Hussain, 28, of Oakroyd Terrace, Bradford, and Hassan Mahmood, 26, of Bentcliffe Avenue, Leeds, were both jailed for nine years. Naheem Hussain, 27, also of Oakroyd Terrace, was jailed for three years.

A jury heard how the pair drove to Halifax two days before the incident and stole a car which they used in the robbery.

The vehicle, a Mitsubishi Pajero, was caught on CCTV a day before the attack as they carried out reconnaissance.

Mahmood, a medical sciences student and the son of a Leeds University lecturer, provided the balaclavas and arranged for the vehicle and other evidence to be torched after the raid.

The court heard they set fire to the car near to Roundhay Park but residents alerted the fire brigade who managed to put out the blaze and recover the balaclavas. The defendants' DNA was later recovered from the balaclavas.

Robin Frieze, for Naheem Hussain, of Oakroyd Terrace, Bradford, said his client suffered from a condition which left him almost blind. Mr Frieze said he could not have driven the stolen vehicle and was not responsible for hitting the victim.

After the case, Detective Inspector Neil Thompson, of Leeds District Crime Team, said: "This was a carefully planned and orchestrated robbery which saw the victims put through a terrifying ordeal when they were attacked by these men as they left their business.

"They went to great lengths to avoid being caught but a comprehensive investigation by specialist officers from Leeds District Crime Team uncovered clear evidence linking them to the crime.

"The weight of that evidence, which included painstaking checks on CCTV, detailed forensic work and phone analysis, saw the men found guilty at trial.

"We hope the significant prison sentences they have received will provide some suitable reassurance to the victims and to the wider community, and also serve as a warning to others who choose to involve themselves in violent organised crime such as this."

'Evil' child rapist offered victim's family money to drop case

A CHILD rapist from Bradford who offered to pay his schoolgirl victim's family money to drop the case and leave the country has been jailed for 13 years.

Police branded 64-year-old Tariq Syed "evil" after a Bradford Crown Court jury found him guilty of rape and perverting the course of justice.

The rape of the Bradford schoolgirl was reported to police in September 2014 and suspect Syed arrested a short time later. He denied the offence and was bailed pending further enquiries.　

Syed, of Pemberton Drive, Bradford, was arrested again the following month after the victim's family claimed he had offered them money to return to leave the country.　

He was bailed with conditions not to approach the family and later charged with both offences.　

But just as the trial was due to get underway at court in August last year, the victim and her family unexpectedly left the UK.

Concerned that proceedings may not go ahead if the victim and her mother refused to attend court, Detective Constable Charlotte Grose and Detective Sergeant Amanda Middleton flew out to the country to make sure arrangements were in place for them to give evidence via a video link. 　

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Howard, said: "Syed was an evil man who thought that by throwing money at the family he would get them to drop the case against him.　

"We are delighted at the sentence he has received and hope it will give the victim and her family some closure. 　

"We also hope it will encourage others to report sexual offences to the Bradford District Safeguarding Unit, whose specially trained officers will investigate every report sensitively and thoroughly with the aim of bringing perpetrators to justice."　

Mark Burns-Williamson, West Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner, added: 　

"I would like to commend the bravery shown by the victim and their family in coming forward to report Syed.　

"His crimes were absolutely deplorable and his actions following arrest even more so.

"Tackling child sexual abuse is an absolute priority, as proven by the tireless and dedicated work of West Yorkshire Police in this case.　

"I would urge anyone who feels they may have been a victim to come forward and report it to the police. You will be listened to and support will be provided."

A prolific criminal who has lived illegally in Britain for 17 years has won £40,000 damages because the Home Office locked him up for too long.

Hassan Massoum Ravandy, 46, was awarded the sum after a judge ruled he had been unlawfully detained for 17 months.

The Iranian, convicted of burglary, theft and drugs offences, was given the payout despite Government lawyers protesting that the amount was as much as innocent victims of accidents might receive in compensation.

Last night Tory backbencher Philip Hollobone, who has tabled bills that would make it easier to deport foreign criminals, said: 'This is yet another crazy judicial ruling and further reason to reform human rights laws so that taxpayers' money isn't spent on compensation for people who don't deserve it.'

The case has emerged after The Mail on Sunday revealed in February that foreign criminals and illegal immigrants were given a staggering £4 million last year for being detained too long. In Ravandy's case, London Central County Court heard how he entered Britain illegally on the back of a lorry in 2000.

He claimed he feared persecution in Iran, but his asylum claim was rejected. A tribunal found that Ravandy had made up a claim about his brother's death at the hands of Hezbollah, and it was said that he most probably fled Iran because he was involved in illegal currency trading.

Foreign criminals were handed a staggering £2 million in compensation last year after complaining they were locked up for too long.

Official figures obtained by The Mail on Sunday reveal that the Home Office made payouts to hundreds of crooks who should have been deported or released sooner.

Another £2 million was given to illegal immigrants who claimed they were unlawfully detained.

Overseas criminals given payouts in recent years include:

An armed robber who was kept in jail – unlawfully – for three extra years while the authorities tried to sort out where he was from. He had lied about his homeland to avoid being sent back.

De Magistris's handling of Salvini's visit also came under fire from most of the media and constitutional experts who said the mayor should not have challenged the populist rightwing leader's freedom of expression.

De Magistris, who had voiced support for the anti-Salvini protestors earlier in the week, said he did not condone what happened on Saturday afternoon. "As a former magistrate who is proud of the his city, I distance myself from any form of violence," he said.

Asian detective honoured by the Queen sues Metropolitan Police over racism claims


An Asian detective who was awarded an honour by the Queen is suing the Metropolitan Police over claims of racism.

Detective Constable Nighat Hubbard is also claiming she was a victim of sexism while serving in the force.

She was presented with an MBE in 2014 for her charity work, reportedly making her the first Muslim policewoman to be honoured by the Queen.

She alleges she was held back while white colleagues were allowed to work more complex investigations, according to The Sunday Times.

The serving officer also says in her claims, which date between 2013 and 2014, that male colleagues made discriminatory comments to her and other women officers, the paper reported.

Scotland Yard said: "We are aware of an employment tribunal claim brought by Det Con Nighat Hubbard against the Metropolitan Police Service alleging race and sex discrimination.

"We are unable to discuss further while proceedings are ongoing."

LGBT activist beaten, raped and held prisoner for two days before escaping his captors

A prominent French LGBT activist was drugged, raped, beaten and held hostage for two days before risking his life to get free.

Zak Ostmane, 35, immigrated to France as a refugee three years ago after coming out as gay in Algeria – an offence punishable by two years in prison and a fine.

He co-founded the Shams-France group, which helps LGBT people from the Middle East who have come to the country to escape persecution.

On Friday, at a bar in Marseille, two men conspired to drug his beer while he was dancing and take him back to a hotel room, where they raped and beat him. It was only on Sunday when he spotted a police car opposite the hotel that he was able to escape his horror after yelling to attract the officials' attention.

Two alleged assailants have been identified and held in prison. Both used to be in the French Foreign Legion, but while one of the men left the legion after three decades, the other has been reported as a deserter.

A prominent LGBT activist has allegedly been held hostage and raped by an American who said he was angry about Donald Trump being mocked in France.

Viharikokset lisääntyivät USA:ssa yli viidenneksellä viime vuonna - syynä vaalikampanjointi ja julkisuus

Poliisin tietoon tullut viharikollisuus on kasvanut hälyttävän paljon Yhdysvalloissa, tutkijat kertoivat maanantaina.

Tutkijat tarkastelivat yhdeksän metropolialueen rikostilastoja viime vuodelta ja havaitsivat, että viharikokset olivat lisääntyneet 23,3 prosentilla. Asiasta kertoo Kalifornian yliopiston viharikollisuutta ja ääriajattelua tutkivan keskuksen johtaja Brian Levin.

Eniten poliisin tietoon tulleita viharikoksia tapahtui tarkastelluilla alueilla New Yorkin kaupungissa, yhteensä 380. Kasvua on 24 prosenttia. Pääkaupungissa Washingtonissa taas määrä oli jokseenkin pieni, 107 tapausta, mutta kasvua oli peräti 62 prosenttia.

Trendi on jatkunut alustavien tietojen perusteella myös tänä vuonna. New Yorkissa juutalaisiin kohdistuvia rikoksia oli kuluvan kuun viidenteen päivään mennessä rekisteröity 55. Kasvua edellisvuoden vastaavaan aikaan on 189 prosenttia. Antisemitismi on näkynyt myös muualla maassa, jossa juutalaisiin keskuksiin on tehty kymmenittäin pommiuhkauksia ja juutalaisille hautausmaille on tehty ilkivaltaa.

Levinin mukaan antisemitismi on tähän asti ollut tasaisessa laskussa toistakymmentä vuotta.

- Tästä saattaa hyvinkin alkaa trendi, jossa antisemitismi lisääntyy vuodesta toiseen, rikosoikeuden professori Levin kommentoi.

Myös muslimeihin ja seksuaalivähemmistöihin kohdistuva viharikollisuus on kasvussa.

Kaksi mahdollista syytä

Levin uskoo, että viime vuonna presidentinvaalikampanja, jossa keskityttiin osin rotuun, uskontoon ja syntyperään, on voinut vaikuttaa sekä tapausten lisääntymiseen että raportoimishalukkuuteen niistä. Vastaavasti myös tapausten saama julkisuus lisääntyi.

- Yhdistelmä on voinut rohkaista kahta puolta, Levin sanoo.

Toinen puoli kovan linjan rasisteista elämälleen tekemistä ja jännitystä etsiviin on voinut saada teoilleen pontta ja toisaalta uhrit, jotka ovat huomanneet, että he eivät ole yksin, ovat uskaltautuneet ilmoittamaan tapauksista poliisille. Asiantuntijoiden mukaan iso osa viharikollisuudesta jää piiloon, sillä uhrit ovat haluttomia kertomaan kokemuksistaan viranomaisille.

- Tosin en usko, että voimme selittää tätä vain lisääntyneellä julkisuudella, Levin toteaa.

Presidentti Donald Trump, joka vaalikampanjansa aikana muun muassa kieltäytyi tuomitsemasta valkoisten ylivaltaa kannattavaa Ku Klux Klania, joka syytti meksikolaisia raiskaajiksi, ja jonka katsotaan lietsovan vihaa muslimeja ja maahanmuuttajia kohtaan, on viime aikoina alkanut puhua juutalaisvastaisuutta ja viharikollisuutta vastaan. Hän nosti asian esiin esimerkiksi parlamentille pitämässään puheessa helmikuun lopulla.

Liittovaltion poliisin FBI:n viimeisin laaja viharikollisuustilasto julkaistiin marraskuussa ja koskee vuotta 2015. Sen mukaan uskonnollisin motiivein tehdyistä viharikoksista juutalaisiin kohdistuu 51,3 prosenttia tapauksista ja muslimeihin 22,2 prosenttia. Yleisin viharikoksen kohde ovat tummaihoiset.

Murdered Martine Vik Magnussen's family tell son of Yemeni billionaire to 'give yourself up'

The Young woman's body was found partially buried beneath rubble in a central London basement.

For nine years, the parents of Martine Vik Magnussen have been urging their daughter's suspected killer to return to the UK to face justice. The 23-year-old Norwegian student was found raped and murdered in the basement of a central London flat on 14 March, 2008.

Farouk Abdulhak – the "playboy" son of Yemeni billionaire Shaher Abdulhak – is the prime suspect for her murder, but he has refused to be questioned by police since fleeing to Yemen within hours of Martine's disappearance.

Nine years later, the victim's frustrated family have joined the Met Police in another heartfelt plea urging Abdulhak to return to face justice.

Martine's father, Petter Magnussen, said: "We never imagined nine years ago that we would be in this position today. We had hoped that Farouk Abdulhak would by now have had the courage to return to the UK and allow for the legal processes to proceed.

"Sadly that is not the case, he remains at large, hiding from justice and putting myself and my family through intolerable pain. Martine was a beautiful daughter and our search for justice will never cease."

Martine, who lived with friends in Westminster, was last seen in the early hours of 14 March, 2008. She had been celebrating her end of term exams with other students from the Regent's Business School at Mayfair's Maddox nightclub, where she is believed to have left with fellow student Abdulhak.

Two days later her body was found partially buried beneath rubble in the basement of some flats in Great Portland Street, where Abdulhak lived, after being reported missing. A post-mortem examination gave cause of death as compression to the neck. She had also been raped.

An inquest at Westminster Coroner's Court in November 2010 recorded a verdict of unlawful killing.

Detectives have made numerous appeals for Abdulhak to return to the UK so that they can speak to him about Martine's death, but they said "he continues to refuse to return."

The UK has no extradition treaty with Yemen and diplomatic efforts have failed to see him return.

Abdulhak has reportedly since married, leading detectives to believe he has no intention of handing himself in for questioning.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Partridge, of the Met Police, said: "It is important that this case remains in the public consciousness; myself and my team are resolutely committed to this investigation and this will not diminish with the passage of time.

"Martine's family has spent the last nine years without her in their lives. To have your daughter taken from you in such a horrific way, especially when so far from home, and still be without answers is truly heartbreaking.

"One man can help provide those answers. Farouk Abdulhak remains wanted for Martine's murder. I would like to take this opportunity to urge him to return to the UK so that this matter may be resolved through the UK courts."
