The raid included officers from the Narcotics Suppression Bureau who found 12 people who tested positive for drugs, while another 15 were not carrying passports. One was found to have overstayed their visa.

"There were 55 foreigners, mostly black people doing drugs," said the bureau's Col. Worawit Waithanomsak.

Police Sergeant Sylvia Young was shot at least eight times by a gunman as she sat in her vehicle in the west of the city, Philadelphia police commissioner Richard Ross said.

Both officers shot are expected to recover but some of the public hit are "not in a good shape at all".

"He just walks up on her ... he just fired. He didn't say anything," Ross said, adding that the suspect fired about 15 rounds into Young's vehicle.

Nearby officers heard the gunshots and began pursuing the suspect on foot. During the chase, the suspect fired shots into a tavern, striking a security guard in the leg.

He then used a woman from the bar as a shield before shooting her. He later fired into a car, seriously wounding a man and woman, he said.

The chase ended when the gunman exchanged gunfire with police in an alley, wounding a University of Pennsylvania police officer. The shooter was killed during the gun fight, Ross said.

"We have a lot of unanswered questions...this is a completely bizarre situation," he said.

The officer shot in the alley was expected to survive but the conditions of the wounded civilians was not immediately clear.

A gunman was shot dead in Philadelphia after he ambushed and shot two cops and four civilians, killing one of the bystanders, in a 'targeted attack on police'.

Nicholas Glenn, 25, has been identified as the lone gunman, according to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross.

One 25-year-old woman was killed in the attack and two officers were hospitalized.

Three civilians were also wounded, including one who remains in critical condition.

A note believed to be written Glenn that allegedly contained rambling anti-police rhetoric and named a specific parole officer as a target was recovered near the scene.

Ross said Glenn first ambushed Sgt Sylvia Young, 46, late Friday night just a few blocks from the University of Pennsylvania campus.

Glenn has a number of drug-possession convictions in Philadelphia and was also charged in connection with a gang rape case in November 2009, court records show.

The rape case was withdrawn by prosecutors in December 2011 for reasons that are currently unknown.   

'Right now we have a lot of questions,' Ross said on Saturday. 'This is completely a bizarre situation.'

Ross said that some of Dunn's letter found at the scene alluded to issues he had with a probation officer and 'not being particularly fond of the police department', but revealed most of it focused on himself.

'A lot of talk in the first person about himself and what he does and doesn't do, and issues he has with a whole bunch of other things,' Ross said.

The envelope was entitled 'Doomed'.

'I guess he was referring to anyone who was going to be in his path last night,' Ross said.

Ross added that there is no indication that Dunn had been radicalized or that he has 'ties to anything else'.

Other than the rantings in the letter, there has also been scarce indication of what Dunn was motivated by.

Ross said he believes it will be 'very difficult' to learn much from the rambling letter, as it was more about Dunn himself than anyone he wanted to harm.

'Clearly there were some issues going on there,' Ross said.

The commissioner also confirmed that Dunn had a 'significant criminal past' and was 'well-known to the police department'.

Authorities do not yet know how the convict was able to obtain a weapon, as the gun's serial number had been obliterated.

A knife-wielding man who injured eight people at a mall in central Minnesota Saturday evening asked at least one victim whether they were Muslim and referenced Allah during the assault, authorities said Wednesday.

St. Cloud Police Chief William Blair Anderson said the suspect, whom he did not identify, was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer from another jurisdiction. All but one of the eight victims had been treated and released from a local hospital and all were expected to survive their injuries.

Police responded reports of several stabbings at the Crossroads Mall at around 8:30 p.m. local time. Witnesses also reported hearing gunshots at the scene.

Anderson declined to call the attacks an act of terrorism, saying the motive for the attacks isn't known yet. "We will be diligent and get to the bottom of this," Anderson said.

The chief added that the suspect was wearing the uniform of a private security company and noted his only prior contact with police had been through traffic stops.

The attack caused chaos and prompted a lockdown of the mall, which is located approximately 70 miles northwest of Minneapolis.

"I went closer to the mall entrance by J.C. Penney's and I was looking at some jeans and all the sudden people were just running in chaos," worker Ashley Bayne told WCCO. "They were screaming, 'Someone's stabbing people in the mall,' and people were just really frantic and were running."

Harley and Tama Exsted of Isle, Minn., who were in St. Cloud to watch their son play in a college golf tournament, were in the mall.

"All of a sudden I heard pop pop pop," Harley Exsted told the St. Cloud Times. "I thought someone tipped over a shelf. All of a sudden these people started running. I just saw everybody running our way."

The two were unharmed and said they helped another woman who was running from the scene to her car.

Anderson said the mall would remain closed on Sunday due to the ongoing investigation.

Turkin poliisi on pidättänyt miehen, joka hyökkäsi shortseihin pukeutuneen nuoren naisen kimppuun istanbulilaisessa bussissa.

Unemployed Usman, of Brighton, denied attempted murder but was found guilty following a trial at Lewes Crown Court on July 20 and jailed for 20 years on Friday.

Mona Sahlin och hennes tidigare livvakt har delgivits misstanke om brott. Livvakten har hämtats till förhör, men vägrat uttala sig.

Under onsdagen blev de tilldelade offentliga försvarare som ska representera dem i processen.
– Båda har fått försvarare, säger polisens utredare Ing-Marie Hägglund.
– Förhören hölls i dag på förmiddagen, säger åklagaren Håkan Roswall.

Mona Sahlin och hennes tidigare livvakt har delgivits misstanke om brott, som ett resultat av den utredning som åklagare inledde efter Expressens granskning i maj.

Sahlin valde att avgå från jobbet som regeringens nationella samordnare efter att det framkom att hon undertecknat flera osanna arbetsgivarintyg om hur mycket hennes tidigare livvakt - vid tidpunkten handplockad för ett jobb på myndigheten - tjänade.
Intygen banade väg att livvakten bland annat kunde lägga handpenning på en lägenhet värd tio miljoner kronor och en lyxbil i miljonklassen.
