Guardian: Universities UK withdraws advice on gender segregation in lectures

The body that represents UK universities has withdrawn guidance on the gender segregation of audiences in lectures and debates after the prime minister, David Cameron, said it should not be allowed to happen.

Universities UK said a controversial case study setting out the guidance was being withdrawn while it reviewed its stance, but insisted the legal position remained unclear on whether the voluntary separation of men and women could be allowed at events such as lectures on Islam by visiting speakers.

Ehdotuksina mm. että kokeet olisivat heti aamusta, jolloin muslimeilla ei olisi vielä nälkä. Toisena vaihtoehtona muslimeille annetaan "olosuhteista johtuvia" bonuspisteitä. Teachers and lecturers in England and Wales are pushing for the summer exam timetable to be altered to help Muslim students who will be fasting when they sit papers. School exam boards and universities are considering the radical shake-up from 2016, when the religious period of Ramadan clashes with the exam season.

One option is to hold some exams earlier within the usual May-June exam season. Another is for fasting Muslim students to be eligible for extra marks under 'special consideration' rules if they believe their performance has been affected.

The government-funded Equality Challenge Unit, which advises higher education, said exam time-tables should be overhauled. 'Institutions should be prepared to consider significant adjustments to their exam schedules and think creatively about assessment methods in order to eliminate disadvantage to particular groups,' it said.

British Film Institute tells filmmakers to tick new diversity targets or miss funding


Movie companies have been told they must meet new targets for ethnic minority, gay and female characters on screen to be eligible for future funding from the British Film Institute.

The BFI, Britain's largest public film fund, announced a "Three Ticks" scheme to ensure diversity in films and behind the scenes as it set out new rules for funding.

Under the system, to be implemented in September, films must "tick" at least two of three criteria: on-screen diversity; off-screen diversity and "creating opportunities and social mobility".

The BFI, which allocates lottery funding and invests more than £27 million in film production, sales and distribution, supports about 30 new projects a year. It backed The King's Speech and Philomena.

The new rules will compel filmmakers to place "diverse" actors and subjects at the forefront of their projects, as well as ensuring minority workers are represented on set and in the crew.

On screen, at least one lead character must be "positively reflecting diversity", with the story more likely to receive funding if it "explicitly and predominantly explores issues of identity relating to ethnicity or national origins, a specific focus on women, people with disabilities, sexual identity, age and people from a socially disadvantaged background".

Among the films the BFI has praised for content include Suffragette, the story of the battle for women to gain the vote, and Pride, about gay activists supporting the miners' strike. It will ask filmmakers to ensure that at least 30 per cent of supporting and non-speaking characters are also "diverse".

Off-screen, at least two heads of department must be from diverse backgrounds, as well as a range of "key creatives" including the director, screenwriter, composer and cinematographer.

The third category requires companies to offer paid internships and jobs to "new entrants from diverse backgrounds" and to help them progress.

"Three Ticks" is likely to raise fears about compromising scripts' authenticity, with period dramas less likely to naturally represent "diverse backgrounds".

A spokesman for the BFI insisted all films would have the opportunity to meet the criteria, with even those not fulfilling them onscreen able to "tick" the other two sections.

Ed Vaizey, the culture minister, praised the initiative as helping to "raise the bar", adding that he would like to see all television, film and performing arts companies following the BFI's example.

Amanda Nevill, the CEO of the BFI, said it was "vital" to reflect British society in order to stay relevant and said the announcement "is just the beginning".

Last month, the BBC announced it would ensure one in seven actors and presenters will be either black, Asian or ethnic minority in the next three years.

British children's books don't reflect cultural diversity

British children's books still don't reflect the cultural diversity of the country's children and would-be authors, Children's Laureate Malorie Blackman said.

Her own best-known books, the Noughts and Crosses trilogy, tackle racism, teenage sex and terrorism - challenging stereotypes by showing white-skinned characters subjected to prejudices and restrictions.


She was criticized in the media for a sympathetic portrayal of a suicide bomber in the final part of the trilogy, "Checkmate", that was released just a month before suicide bomb attacks killed 52 Londoners on public transport on July 7, 2005.

She responds by saying that those who criticized her had not read the books, and if they had, they would realize that the books help people understand motivations, not condone them.

"Very, very few picture books are published in this country that feature children of color," Blackman told Reuters at a cafe in the British Library. "We might have dogs, cats, rabbits, puppies, but when it comes to children, very few (featuring different ethnicities) are published."

Blackman won her two-year term as Laureate, awarded after consultations including librarians, booksellers and children voting online, in 2013. The role champions children's literature and past holders include Julia Donaldson, author of the Gruffalo, and illustrator Quentin Blake.

Blackman wants more new authors from ethnic minorities to get their books published in Britain. "I can reel off the name of about 10 or 15 black and minority ethnic authors in the UK, but I should be able to reel off a hell of a lot more."

She says that when she started writing, she was told that white children wouldn't want to read books that featured black characters.

Even now, a narrow focus on the bottom line by publishers in recent years has made it hard from authors from different ethnic backgrounds to become established, Blackman said.

"When I started 24 years ago, there was more leeway to go with the potential of the author, where they could stick with an author for a two or three book contract. Now your (first) book has to hit the ground running and prove itself, so you have less chance to establish yourself."

Her latest book, "Noble Conflict", was inspired by the leaking of sensitive secret government cables by Chelsea Manning, formerly known as Bradley Manning, and Edward Snowden.

"We're all told not to tell tales, but if you are told (about) something that your society is doing is wrong, do you blow the whistle?" she said.

"I try to ask these questions and ... have teens trying to decide and discuss what they would do."

Blackman wants children to write, too, and is curating the first Young Adult Literature Convention in London on July 12-13, including sessions on writing fantasy and heroes of horror.

Ja kenen tehtävä sitten muka olisi "heijastaa" tuota "kulttuurillista moninaisuutta"? Eikö jokaisen kulttuurin ole itse hoidettava oma osansa? Vai käykö tässäkin asiassa niin, että valkoiset tekevät kehitysmaalaistenkin osan ja vielä kantavat syyllisyyttä siitä, jolleivät ole sitä tehneet kyllin hyvin?

On luonnollista, että jokainen etninen ryhmä kuvaa taiteessaan omaa ryhmäänsä. Se, että ryhmä ei kuvaa muita ryhmiä, ei ole minkään ryhmän vika. Ne ryhmät, joita ei taiteessa kuvata, saavat syyttää vain omaa ryhmäänsä, joka ei tuota itseään kuvaavaa taidetta. Se oikeus heille suotakoon.

 Asylum bill hits £726,000 a day: Immigration policy is a 'shambles' say critics

The astonishing figure shows the Government's immigration policy is a complete shambles, critics said last night.

Officials are dealing with more than three asylum applications an hour because of the strong desire by migrants from around the world to live here.

Since 2010, £1.2billion has been spent on bed and board for refugees while their claims are processed.

That could have paid for 58,000 extra nurses, 52,000 teachers or 47,500 police officers.

But the true scale of the public liability for the overseas influx is likely to be significantly higher because it does not include health care, school or legal aid costs.

The Home Office data, obtained via a Freedom of Information request, shows the asylum bill for 2013/14 – the most recent available – was £265million or £726,027 a day.

The figures come just days after official statistics showed net ­migration to the UK rose to 298,000 – its highest level since 2005.

Last night Ukip MEP Steven Woolfe said: "Following the staggering immigration figures from last week, we now have these extraordinary numbers which illustrate the failures of our soft-touch immigration policy.

"Instead of wasting more than £700,000 a day keeping claimants here we should use the money to abolish the bedroom tax or reduce the huge national debt."

Lavish concessions allow those who have entered the UK illegally somewhere to live, a cash allowance, or both.

Married couples pocket £72.52 a week, lone parents receive £43.94, while those aged 18 and over get £36.62.

Even those whose claims are turned down are entitled to £35.39.

Claimants can also get free NHS treatment while their children will be found school places and have free meals.

Britain's asylum crisis is now so acute that often the only place to house them is in luxury seaside lodgings.

Last year scores of asylum seekers were put up at the Grand Burstin Hotel in Folkestone, Kent.

While the numbers applying for asylum are significantly down on the record 103,081 in 2002, the Home Office statistics show claims have crept up since 2011.

Then the figure was 25,898 – an average of 71 a day. In 2012 the number was 27,978, or 77 a day, but in 2013 it reached 29,875, the equivalent of 82 a day.

The figures do not take into account the fact that since 2012 an estimated 50,000 illegal immigrants have "disappeared" and are at large in the UK.

Alp Mehmet, of Migration Watch, said: "Anyone who merits asylum should be granted it quickly but those who don't should be removed equally quickly.

If they are not, it will inevitably end up costing the British taxpayer a lot of money."

Jonathan Isaby, chief executive of the TaxPayer's Alliance, said: "Taxpayers will be astounded at this cost.

"Clearly it would be ­inhumane not to house and feed individuals while they are waiting for deportation but we have to speed up the process."

Describing the figures as "disappointing", immigration minister James Brokenshire said: "We are building a system that is fair to British citizens and legitimate migrants and tough on those who abuse the system or flout the law but we know there is much more to do."

The lure of life in ­Britain has seen 3,000 migrants from war-ravaged countries flock to the French port of Calais.

Cameron on nyt viime aikoina ollut "kusi sukassa". Tää EU-vääntö on jättänyt sisäpolitiikan kulkemaan omillaan. Toisaalta, Labourin rökäletappio ja pandasilmän vetäytyminen takaoikealle on tuonut takavasemmalta Tuomiojan habituksella olevan vanhan taistolaisen puheenjohtajaehdokkaaksi. Violent offences, including rape, jumped 27 per cent to more than 885,000 in England and Wales. Attacks in which the victim suffered injures leapt 16 per cent to nearly 404,000.

Crimes involving guns rose by 4 per cent to 4,994 while those in which a knife or other sharp weapon was used increased by 9 per cent to 27,487.

Attempted murders involving a knife rose by almost a quarter to 305 and knifepoint rapes soared by 26 per cent to 341, said the Office for National Statistics.

Reports of sex attacks rose by 36 per cent to a record 99,609 – the equivalent of 273 rapes and other sexual offences a day.

Breitbart: YouTuber 'Count Dankula' Found Guilty in 'Sh*tposting' Case by British Court

He was due to be sentenced Tuesday afternoon but the judge decided to release him on bail, to return to court on the 23rd of April.

The case is over a 2016 YouTube video made by Meechan and published on his comedy Count Dankula page of his girlfriend's dog Buddha raising its paw in return for a treat, having been trained to respond to phrases.

Buddha's owner Suzanne Kelly had previously said "He (Buddha) will lift his paw to virtually anything if he gets a treat for it. We have taught him to lift his paw to food, like ham or cheese," and that her boyfriend had "never expressed anti-Jewish or anti-Semitic" views and has "always been very supportive towards minority groups", reported Herald Scotland before the trial.

Speaking outside the court Tuesday morning, Meechan said: "It's been two years of my life completely put on hold, I've not been able to get a job, there have been threats against my life... threats off Antifa, far left radicals."

"They've tried to portray me as a racist and a Nazi, apparently context doesn't matter anymore.

Explaining how a simple joke had been taken out of context, Meechan said: "What they should have realised from the start is realise how ridiculous this entire thing is, okay he's just a shitposter, he's an edgy comedian', there are famous comedians who have done much worse than me [like Frankie Boyle] and you don't see them getting arrested."

"The thing which makes it so ridiculous is that this is over a joke, I'm a Youtuber, I made the joke video for a laugh... but then people wanted to misrepresent that."

Speaking to journalists waiting outside the court waiting for the verdict before he went inside, Meechan blasted the police and mainstream media for having colluded before his arrest, allowing journalists to set up outside his home to photograph and record him being taken away by officers.
