A Muslim father charged with murdering his three daughters in apparent honour killings has said he would do it again - even if they came back to life 100 times.
Mohammad Shafia, 58, cursed his daughters Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, saying they were 'treacherous' as he likened them to prostitutes during a conversation that was recorded by police.
He is on trial for their murders after they were found dead in the family car along with their mother, Rona Amir, 50, in the Rideau Canal, located in the Kingston area of Ontario in Canada in 2009.

In 1980, Mohammad Shafia married Rona Amir Mohammad in a lavish Kabul ceremony. Several years later, when it became apparent that Ms. Mohammad was infertile, he took Ms. Yahya as a second wife. Mohammad's status fell sharply as Yahya bore seven children in rapid succession. Though increasingly relegated to the sidelines of the marriage, Mohammad played a substantial role in the children's upbringing.

And then there was Rona Amir Mohammed, 53, a handsome woman and appendage to the marriage, introduced by the girls as their "aunt'' but called Mother Rona. She poured her aching heart into a diary.

Rona wrote bitterly that Tooba had separated her from their co-husband, took her money, gradually limited the nights Rona and Shafia were permitted to sleep together, threatened to throw her out of their triplex Montreal apartment. "Miserable me, who wouldn't question Shafia about anything," wrote Rona, "who swallowed everything because I had no choice.''

Tooba allegedly told her: "You're not his wife. You're my servant. Your family got rid of you. Who would want a dead weight around its neck? Your life is in my hands."

The family emigrated to Montreal in 2007 after spending about a decade in Dubai, Pakistan and Australia. By then, Tooba had borne Shafia seven children. But there was deep friction in the household, with the daughters claiming to police, teachers and child welfare authorities that they were abused by their father and Hamed. Even their younger brother, a 12-year-old child, scolded Sahar once when discovering her in a restaurant with a boy. The males of the family, regardless of age, felt entitled to discipline the girls.

But in the Crown's version of events, the parents and Hamed had been planning for weeks to do away with the sisters and Rona. The jury will be presented with evidence, said Lacelle, that a computer owned by Shafia and used by Hamed had been used to conduct Google searches on "where to commit a murder'' and "can a prisoner have control over their real estate?" Various bodies of water were explored, online, along with boat rentals and other suspicious subjects.

From a wiretapped conversation Shafia had with Tooba and Hamed, 20 days after the bodies were discovered, Shafia in a fury recalling the revealing cellphone pictures of Zainab and Shahar: "Curse God on both of them. Is that what a daughter should be? Would a daughter be such a whore? May the devil s--t on their graves."

And later, not long before the trio was arrested in Montreal, Shafia tells Hamed, as Lacelle quoted from another wiretap transcript: "Even if they hoist me up on to the gallows, nothing is more dear to me than my honour."

To his wife, Shafia allegedly assured that the right actions had been taken: "I say to myself, you did well. Were they to come back to life, I would do it again. No Tooba, they messed up. There was no other way. They were treacherous. They betrayed us immensely. There can be no betrayal worse than this. They committed treason on themselves. They betrayed humankind. They betrayed Islam. They betrayed our religion. They betrayed everything."

Tämä on se vakio kuoppa johon relativistit astuvat verratessaan "kunniamurhia" läntisiin perheen sisäisiin veritekoihin. Noissa kulttuureissa tappamista pidetään ihan asiallisena, ja sitä sumplii, suunnittelee ja piilottelee useita perheenjäseniä.

Ei täällä 99% perheistä useat perheenjäsenet alkaisi suunnitella murhaa. Useimmiten täällä tappaja on yksin ja usein tekee vielä itsekin itsemurhan. Sosiaalista hyväksyntää moisella täällä ei todella ole, toisin kuin noissa "kunniakulttuureissa"..

Wiretaps reveal little regard for slain daughters

As Mohammad Shafia said prophetically - this as he and his son were discussing for the zillionth time what evidence the police might or might not have against them - "Everything will be clear at court."

Shafia, his second wife Tooba Mohammad Yahya and their oldest son Hamed may not have been the sharpest knives in the drawer - even after their arrests on July 22, 2009, as they sat in a police car waiting to be driven from Montreal to Kingston, they couldn't keep their lips zipped - but they surely rank among the cruelest.

Once, for instance, Yahya appeared to be minimally ruing the deaths of her two youngest daughters, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13.

"I know Zainab was already done," she said flatly of the 19-year-old who had run away two months before her death, "but I wish two others weren't."

That mild hint of regret or self-doubt launched Shafia into one of his most vicious screeds.

Monday, Ontario Superior Court Robert Maranger and a jury listened to police wiretaps of the trio's conversations in the days leading up to and including the day of their arrests.

These conversations were what the family members said to one another in what they either imagined were private moments or believed were impenetrable chats, because they spoke in the language of their native Afghanistan.

The wiretaps also reveal the breadth of the strange dysfunction of this family, who physically left Afghanistan in 1992 and lived abroad for years before coming to Canada in 2007, but who spiritually never really left Kabul far behind. The day before the trio were arrested, one of the siblings phoned Hamed about 3 a.m. one morning.

In that whispered, desperate conversation, Hamed tried to tell the other children that the end might be approaching. The sibling's answer? "If nothing happens, the best thing is everyone suicide."

Jos on tavattoman vaikeata ymmärtää tällaisten perheiden logiikkaa, myös noissa ulkomaankielisissä uutisoinneissa joutuu todella pinnistelemään jotta ymmärtää mitä tapahtui ja kenelle, mistä syystä. Aikanaan kun lueskelin Pakistanilaisia sanomalehtiä päivittäin, tuntui kuin toimittaja olisi kesken jutun kirjoittamisen käynyt tehotupakki-vesipiipullisella, sen verran ajatus harhaili.
Miksi muuten Kanadassa afgaanilla sai olla (ainakin) pari vaimoa samaan aikaan?.

Länsimaissa tapahtuvissa kunniamurhissa on valitettava ja melkein liiankin itsestäänselvä piirre jota kovin moni ei halua tai kenties huomaa ajatella, etenkään ne latvakakkoset jotka kieltäytyvät näkemästä kunniaväkivallassa mitään eroa meille tyypilliseen perheväkivaltaan. Kaikkihan me hakataan naisia rutiininomaisesti ja patriarkaatti jne mutta jatketaan aiheesta.

Se on tämä: vain muutama tapaus luo ennakkoasetelman jolla on hirvittävä vaikutus kaikkiin kunniakulttuurin piirissä eläviin naisiin, vaikka he asuisivat maahanmuuttajina Kanadassa tai Ruotsissa tai Suomessa. "Suvaitsevaisten" (etenkin jostain kummallisesta syystä Vihreiden äänestäjien) ainakin minusta yleinen argumentti on, ettei tavoista jotka eivät sovi paikalliseen lakiin tarvitse välittää, koska meillä on poliisi joka kyllä hoitaa sellaiset ihmiset jotka lakia rikkovat. Ei se ihan näin mene (senkään lisäksi ettei poliisin ja lakikirjan olemassaolo estä omiakaan rötöstelijöitä toteuttamasta itseään).

Muutama esimerkkitapaus nimittäin riittää pelottelemaan koko yhteisön ja vangitsemaan tuhansia ja tuhansia ihmisiä kunniakulttuuriin. Oikeus- ja moraalipoliisivaltio Ruotsissa murhattiin kurdi Fadime Sahindal. Yksittäistapaus joka ei ole toistunut? Ei edes tarvitse. Fadimen murhan jälkeen jokainen Ruotsissa asuva kurdityttö on tiennyt, että niin voi tapahtua myös minulle, asuin missä tahansa. Eikä siellä kukaan muu kuin lehdistö leiki, että alvariinsa parvekkeilta tippuvat tai päänsä grilliin työntäneet maahanmuuttajavaltaisella alueella naiset ovat ainoastaan omituisten tapaturmien uhreja, sana leviää: jokainen kurdi, somali tai irakilainen tuntee ainakin yhden tai kaksi tositarinaa jossa samassa maassa asuva nuori nainen tai tyttö on kohdannut kulttuurisesti rikkaan sattumuksen ja heillä on kaikki syy olettaa, että se voi sattua myös omalle kohdalle jos ei elä perheen kunniakäsitysten mukaan. Three members of an Afghanistan-born family in the Canadian city of Kingston have been found guilty of murdering three daughters and a first wife in a so-called "honour" killing.

The victims' bodies were found in a car submerged in a canal in June 2009.

The girls' father and brother and the father's second wife will serve a minimum of 25 years in prison.

Prosecutors said the father was angered that his two eldest daughters wanted boyfriends, in defiance of his values.

Two convicted 'honour' killers to be deported from Canada

Two people convicted of killing four female relatives in a so-called "honour" killing in Canada have had their permanent residencies revoked.

Mohammad Shafia and his wife Tooba Yahya were found guilty of the murder of their three teenage daughters and Shafia's first wife in 2012.

Their son Hamed was also sent to prison for his role in the murders.

Yahya and Shafia will be sent back to their native Afghanistan once they are released from jail.

The orders, requested by the Canada Border Services Agency, were issued for serious criminality and come with no right of appeal.

All three family members are serving 25-year life sentences for the killing of sisters Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, and Rona Amir Mohammad, 52.

Their bodies were found in June 2009 in a car submerged in a canal in the city of Kingston, Ontario.

During the 2012 trial, prosecutors said Mohammad Shafia was angered that his two eldest daughters wanted boyfriends, in defiance of his values.

The court heard how he had become increasingly angry and upset with his three teenage daughters for having secret relationships with boys and wearing revealing clothes.

The jury was told the decision to murder the four women was made after 19-year-old Zainab took refuge in a shelter, defying her male relatives.

The trio appealed their conviction in 2015 and lost.

The Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (IRC) revoked Shafia's permanent residency on 27 February. Yahya's was revoked at a hearing in Montreal on Thursday.

The IRC said on Friday it had no information regarding Hamed's citizenship.

The Shafia family left Afghanistan in 1992. They came to Canada in 2007, having previously lived in Australia, Pakistan and Dubai.
