Senator Iulian Urban's comment trigged angered criticism from opposition MEPs.

A PDL Senator made an unprecedented shocking statement on Wednesday night, bluntly accusing the European leaders for the terrible tragedy that hit the Norwegian people last Friday, leaving 68 young people dead.

'It is not Anders Behring Breivik that committed the Norway attacks, but the current leaders of the European Union', ruling Democrat Liberal Party (PDL) Senator Iulian Urban wrote on his blog, arguing that "multiculturalism was shoved down our throats in large dosages" and now "some mad men react violently."

"I know it is shocking to take such a hypothesis into consideration, but it's very real. There are millions of nationalists in Europe, a continent hit by multiple attacks done by Muslims. The EU is giving money to convince non-European immigrants to go back home, France, UK, Germany officially say that 'multiculturalism is dead,' and (German Chancellor Angela) Merkel says that if one wants to live and work in Germany, one must learn German and adopt German values," Urban wrote on his blog.

According to the senator, Islamism is not really present in Romania, whereas it is "a big problem" in all other European countries. "In some countries they (e.n. Muslims) are so aggressive that [the authorities] are seriously considering what to do. (...) It is sad that the European Union does not discuss this matter clearly, so as to establish the difference between freedom of expression and Muslim colonisation," Urban argued, adding that "multiculturalism is good only when you bring together similar cultures."

"In this extremist chaos, it is amazing however that only one European citizen pulled the trigger to express his frustration with the European political class's hypocrisy and indifference to Islamisation and illegal immigration, which endanger (according to the public discourse), the entire European civilisation and culture," Urban added.

The senator's blog post triggered an angry response from the opposition Social Democrats' MEPs, who described the statements as "irresponsible and with heavy fascist nuances."

"We demand PDL to clarify as soon as possible if Senator Urban's statements express the party's stance. It's inadmissible for a lawmaker, member of a party that belongs with the European People's Party group, to launch such fascist aberrations. Through such attitudes, PDL is getting close to the far-right, especially that this is not the first time PDL members have expressed fascist or xenophobic opinions," reads a press release from the PSD group, sent to Mediafax news agency.

PSD MEP Corina Cretu said in a separate statement sent to the news agency that Urban attacked not only the founding values of the EU, but also general human values. "He did not understand anything of what goes on in Europe, a Europe that never was and never should be at the hands of right wing extremists. Left wing policies allowed maintaining social peace and immigrants' integration, Cretu said.
