Uusimman kyselytutkimuksen mukaan suurinosa briteistä yhdistää islamin ääritoimintaan ja naisten alistamiseen. Yougov tutkimuksen mukaan islam assosioituu:
uskontoon 77% vastaajista, ääriliikkeisiin 58%, terrorismiin 50%, väkivaltaan 33%, rauhaan 13%, oikeuteen 6%.

Lisäksi kysyttiin kuka henkilö edustaa islamia parhaiten (Mohamed 34%, Binladen 13%). Onko muslimeilla positiivinen vaikutus Britanniaan (kyllä 19%, ei 41%). Islam alistaa naisia (kyllä 69%) jne.

Nyt Lontoolainen muslimijärjestö on käynnistänyt imagonpuhdistus juliste-kampanjan jolla pyritään korjaamaan brittien väärät käsitykset.

Poster campaign aims to improve image of Islam in the UK

A new poll suggests a majority of Britons associate Islam with extremism and the repression of women, but one London-based Muslim organization has launched a public relations campaign to give the religion a new face.

A host of new posters are going up around London in underground stations, at bus stops and on black cabs intended to promote Islam as a faith that contributes positively to British society.

The posters, each with the tagline "Inspired by Muhammad," are part of a campaign by the Exploring Islam Foundation, a London-based Muslim organization that aims to create positive dialogue on Islam and improve the religion's image in Britain.

A recent poll by the research organization Yougov found that 58 percent of Britons surveyed associate Islam with extremism, 50 percent with terrorism and 68 percent feel the religion encourages the repression of women.

Remona Aly, campaigns director for the Exploring Islam Foundation, told Deutsche Welle her organization felt it needed to respond.

"Our goal now is to put forth the universal values that Muslims hold, which are ones of justice, of compassion, of mutual understanding and tolerance," she said.

Muhammad the environmentalist?

One of the posters features a woman wearing a headscarf with the caption "I believe in rights for women - so did Muhammad." Another features German-born former MTV presenter Kristiane Backer and reads "I believe in protecting the environment - so did Muhammad."

While the posters present a pretty face for Muhammad, Douglas Murray of the Center for Social Cohesion, criticized the campaign as misleading.

"One of the things that they wish to try to prove in this campaign is that Muhammad himself was a great believer in women's rights," Murray said. "That is highly contestable, and I think, wrong."

But Aly defended the posters' claims and said green living was one of the teachings of the prophet.

"He said don't be wasteful with water, even if you are next to a stream of running water," she said. "He told us to observe nature, to look at the elements of nature and learn from them, meditate upon them."

In curiosity, opportunity

Speaking of the Yougov survey, Murray said it came as no shock to him to hear that some Britons associate Islam with extremism and terrorism.

"The British people have seen such acts on their own soil," he said. "It was only in 2005 that self-proclaimed Islamists blew up the London tube." He added that while it is not an appropriate interpretation of Islam, the idea may have taken root with the British public.

But the poll also suggested a third of people would like to know more about the religion.

Backer, the former MTV presenter and a convert to Islam, said therein lays the opportunity for the Inspired by Muhammad campaign to change some minds.

"Islam is a very beautiful religion that contains highly ethical principles, spiritual principles," she said. "But nobody knows about that."

'Muslim women eat herring as well!'

They were getting sick of debates in the Netherlands in which things were said about Muslim women without actually hearing from the women themselves. That's why the Al Nisa organisation has launched their tongue-in-cheek 'Really Dutch' campaign.

It features eye-catching posters. One shows a woman wearing the Muslim veil just about to eat a salted herring (a Dutch delicacy) with the text "I like them raw" underneath. The words are a quote from anti-Islam Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders talking about women who wear the veil.

On another poster, a blonde woman holds a cup and saucer: "Cup of tea in the mosque?" she asks. This refers to former Amsterdam mayor and current Labour Party leader Job Cohen who is famous for his conciliatory teatime chats with minority community leaders, much to Mr Wilders' chagrin.

Colourful posters
Al Nisa's chairwoman Leyla Çakir says the posters make it clear the women pictured are not only Muslim, but also Dutch. Her aim is to counter preconceptions about Muslim women, such as the idea that many of them are oppressed and can't stand up for themselves. The posters are also designed to show that the Netherlands is a multicultural society whether people accept the fact or not.

Al Nisa is organising a national debate on 3 June on the question: How should we continue after the parliamentary elections of 9 June? Former politicians, intellectuals and Muslim community leaders will lead the discussions.

Al Nisa (The Women) was set up in 1982. It claims to be the longest established national organisation for Muslim women in the Netherlands.

Britons link Islam with extremism, says survey

Most people in the UK associate Islam with extremism and the repression of women, a survey has suggested.

The online YouGov poll found 58% of those questioned linked Islam with extremism while 69% believed it encouraged the repression of women.

The survey of 2,152 adults was commissioned by the Exploring Islam Foundation.

The organisation has launched a poster campaign on London transport to combat negative perceptions of Muslims.

BBC home editor Mark Easton says the survey, conducted last month, paints a negative picture of British attitudes to Islam.

Asked if Muslims had a positive impact on British society, the YouGov poll found four out of 10 disagreed with the statement.

Half linked Islam with terrorism, just 13% thought it was based on peace and 6% associated it with justice.

Some 60% admitted they did not know much about the religion, but a third said they would like to know more.
Social responsibility

The Exploring Islam Foundation hopes to challenge the negative views of the religion with its Inspired By Muhammad project.

It will feature posters of Muslim professionals, displayed in central London locations such as bus stops and tube stations, alongside messages emphasising the ways in which Muslims balance religious tradition with contemporary human rights and social responsibility.

Remona Aly, campaigns director for the foundation, said many Muslims were concerned about the way their faith was perceived by the public.

"We want to foster a greater understanding of what British Muslims are about and our contribution to British society. We are proud of being British and being Muslim," she said.

A spokesman for the Quilliam Foundation , the counter-extremism think tank, welcomed the campaign, describing it as a "timely step to help improve relations and foster deeper understanding between British citizens".

"This campaign is important because it can help non-Muslims to better understand the faith that inspires and guides their Muslim friends, neighbours and colleagues.

"This initiative also helps British Muslims reclaim the Prophet Muhammad as a time-honoured guide for peace, compassion and social justice from those who seek to twist his teachings."

London taxis to extol virtues of Islam

Fifty eight per cent of the British public associate Islam with extremism but a new campaign is promoting the religion on London transport

The purple, pink and green sign on the yellow London taxi reads: "The rights of women are sacred."

This is not some spiritual feminist mantra born of the New Age, but comes out of one of the most traditional religions in the world.

The advertisement marks the launch of a campaign to promote a positive image of Islam, a religion not widely known for its promotion of the rights of women.

The negative view of a faith followed by nearly 1.6 billion people, or one fifth of the world's population, is the main reason for the launch of the Inspired by Muhammad campaign.

Jahas... Perinteistä kaksilla kärryillä ratsastamista. Dhimmeille kerrotaan että islam on rauhan uskonto. Samaan aikaan moskeijoissa ääri-islamistit saarnaa sotaa ja kuinka kaikki vääräuskoiset tulee räjäyttää.

Britanniassahan tehtiin taannoin tutkimus, jossa kävi ilmi että suurin osa maan muslimeista hyväksyy terrori-iskut. Se kertoo tylyä kieltä siitä, että vaikka suurin osa muslimeista ei koskaan tee terrori-iskuja, valtaosa heistä kannattaa ja tukee viattomien siviilien teurastusta uskonnon nimissä.

Miksi vastarinta? National Front, Young Bulldogs, English Defence League, Combat 18, tuskin ainoastaan tekemisen puutteessa perustettuja englantilaisia herraskerhoja...

Annettakoon järjestölle tunnustus hyvästä yrityksestä. Ja se mikä tossa on oikeasti irvokasta juuri kuten noissa muslimijulisteissa on, että käsitteinä ihmisoikeudet, sosiaalinen oikeudenmukaisuus, naisten oikeudet, jne ovat täysin tyhjiä, ne eivät tarkoita oikeastaan yhtään mitään tai tarkoittavat kaikille eri asioita.

Kutakuinkin kaikkihan kannattavat oikeudenmukaisuutta jne, mutta oikeudenmukaisuuden sisältö vaihtelee ihan liian paljon tarkoittaankseen yhtään mitään konkreettista. Nörtti vois vaikka sanoa, että varianssi tekee mallista käyttökelvottoman.
