Turvapaikanhakijoiden määrä EU:ssa pysyi vuonna 2009 suunnilleen entisellä tasollaan (+3 %). Merkillepantavaa on kuitenkin hakijoiden määrän kasvaminen Pohjoismaissa melkein täsmälleen yhtä paljon (+51 100 kpl) kuin se pieneni Etelä-Euroopassa (-50 100 kpl). Länsi-Euroopassa tilanne oli samaan aikaan melkein muuttumaton (+ 2 %).

Hakijamäärän kasvu oli Euroopan suurinta Tanskassa (+59 %) ja Suomessa (+47 %).

In the Nordic countries, on the other hand, the number of newly registered asylum-seekers increased by 13 per cent to 51,100 claims, the highest level since 2003 (55,200). There is a particularly large increase in the number of asylum applications registered in Denmark (+59%), Finland (+47%) and Norway (+19%). In comparison, in Sweden, which remained the most important destination for asylum-seekers in the region, there was almost no change in the number of asylum claims in 2009 (24,200) from 2008 (24,400).

These factors are reflected in the current and past ranking of some of the countries included in this report. Sweden, for instance, was not only the main receiving country in Europe in 2007 (36,400 claims), but also the largest recipient of Iraqi asylum-seekers. Iraqi asylum applications, however, have dropped  from 18,600 in 2007 to 2,300 in 2009. It is believed that a change in Swedish decision-making on Iraqi asylum claims, following the Migration Court's  determination that the situation in Iraq is not one of "armed conflict", led to a drop in recognition rates and a potential shift in lows from Sweden to its neighbours. As a consequence, between 2007 and 2009, Norway and Finland moved up in their ranking as destination countries: the former from 17th to 8th place and the latter from 26th to 17th place.

UNHCR: "No flood of asylum seekers"
The UN's High Commissioner for Refugees, António Guterres has dismissed the notion of wealthy Western countries being flooded by a growing stream of asylum seekers as a myth.

Figures released by the UN's refugee organisation, UNHCR, put the number of people seeking asylum in Western countries at 377,000, roughly the same level as in 2008.

By far the largest number of asylum seekers - around 250,000 - came to EU member states, especially the 12 new member states in Central and Eastern Europe. The influx rose in Scandinavia and the Netherlands, but fell sharply in Italy and Turkey.

Afghanistan overtook Iraq as the largest country of origin for asylum seekers, ahead of Somalia, Russian and China.

YK:n pakolaisavun päävaltuutetun mukaan rikkaisiin länsimaihin suuntautuva turvapaikanhakijoiden tulva on myytti.

Vuonna 2009 noin 377 000 ihmistä haki maailmalla turvapaikkaa, mikä on suunnilleen saman verran kuin vuonna 2008. Suurin määrä n. 250 000 hakijaa suuntautui EU-alueelle. Maahansaapujien määrä kasvoi skandinaviassa ja Hollannissa, mutta laski jyrkästi mm. Italiassa ja Turkissa.

Turvapaikanhakijoita oli eniten Afganistanista, Irakista, Somaliasta, Venäjältä ja Kiinasta.

Pohjoismaissa kasvua oli yhteensä 13% (51 100 uutta hakijaa), kun Etelä-Euroopassa laskua oli 33% (eli 50 100 hakijaa vähemmän). Laskua oli Italiassa (-42%), Turkissa (-40%) ja Kreikassa (-20%).

Ei huolta, eihän niitä tullu paljoa enempää kuin viime vuonna. Pakolaistulva on myytti ja tämän foorumin voi sulkea tarpeettomana. Kaikki tosin tietävät seuraukset, vaikka sieltä Afrikasta ei yhtäkkiä tulisikaan satoja miljoona lapsiparkoja hakemaan sosiaaliturvaa ja oman käden oikeutta. Eurooppa luhistuu hitaasti ja varmasti.

More asylum seekers to Norway
Around 17,200 persons applied for political asylum in Norway last year, an 160 per cent increase over the past two years, according to the annual report from the Immigration Directorate (UDI).

However, a report from the UN High Comissioner for Refugees shows that the number of persons who seek asylum in the West, remains nerly unchanged from the year before.

The report covers 44 industrial nations. Last year 377,200 persons applied for asylum in these countries, around 100 more than in 2008.

The Nordic countries experienced a collective increase in the number of asylum seekers by 13 per cent.

Most of the asylum seekers arriving in Norway come from countries plagued by war and conflicts.
