Viimeisimmän uutisen mukaan 15 000 ihmistä on kuollut sitten vuoden 1994 yrittäessään päästä EU:n alueelle.

(ANSAmed) - ROME - More than 15,000 people have lost their lives trying to reach the safety of Europe between 1994 and today. And an incalculable number is still at risk of serious human rights violations, as recent events in Libya have shown. These facts were denounced by the Jesuit Refugee Service on the occasion of the global commemoration on December 10 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

''Even those who do make it to Europe are not safe,'' explains a document issued by the religious organisation. ''EU policy of returning asylum seekers to the member state of first entry overlooks wide variations in national asylum practices in terms of quality, access and safeguards. Consequently, many refugees risk abuse, and may be returned, directly or indirectly, to their countries of origin - in violation of international refugee and human rights law." (ANSAmed).

Viimeisimmän uutisen mukaan 15 000 ihmistä on kuollut sitten vuoden 1994 yrittäessään päästä EU:n alueelle.

Kannattaa huomata, että edes Jesuit Refugee Service ei tiedotteessaan väitä kuolleita pakolaisiksi. Suurin osa on Euroopan alueelle salaa pyrkiviä laittomia siirtolaisia, jotka eivät halua mihinkään tekemisiin viranomaisten kanssa. Järjestö kuitenkin liittää kuolemat pakolaisiin syyttämällä samalla Eurooppaa nimenomaan pakolaisten maahantulon vaikeuttamisesta.

UNHCR:n tietojen mukaan yli 1 500 Euroopaan yrittänyttä hukkui Välimereen vuonna 2011. UNHCR:n mukaan tämä on ennätys sitten vuonna 2006 aloitetun laskennan, tosin todelliset luvut saattavat olla huomattavasti suurempia.

Myöskin meren ylittäneitä oli enneätyksellinen määrä, Euroopaan saapui 58 000.

Immigration: UNHCR, 1,500 dead and missing in Mediterranean

(ANSAmed) - GENEVA, JANUARY 31 - Over 1,500 refugees drowned or went missing in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea in 2011 in their attempt to reach Europe, the highest number even recorded by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) since it began keeping track in 2006. ''The true number could be higher, however,'' the UNHCR said today in Geneva. The previous record high was in 2007, when 630 died or went missing. Last year - when the Arab Spring came into being - also saw a record high 58,000 arrivals in Europe. The largest number was in Italy (56,000 including 28,000 Tunisians), noted UNHCR spokesperson Sybella Wilkes.(ANSAmed).
