Low-Level Education more Expensive for Taxpayer than University

QuoteTHE HAGUE, 08/10/09 - Education at the lowest vocational level is more expensive in the Netherlands than academic training at a university. A so-called MBO diploma costs the government 8,300 euro per year, compared to 6,700 euros for a Master's degree, show figures released by the Central Bureau for Statistics (CBS).

The price of a diploma depends on the annual costs of the education route students follow and the number of years they follow it before they receive the diploma. For a Master's degree, for example, a student will have been in education for around 21 years on average, costing 142,000 euros or 6,700 euros per year.

Students receiving a diploma at MBO level, the lowest level of vocational training and considered by the government to be the minimum labour market 'starting qualification', have on average been in education for 16 years. This costs 129,000 euros, or 8,300 euros per annum.

MBO training can be entered after VMBO, the lowest level of secondary education. MBO is also open for children coming from special needs schools. All kinds of subsidies and special programmes push up the price, as does the practical component, whereby the MBO children work one or several days per week, for example as carpenters or metal workers.

Alemmantason koulutuksessa opiskelijat tarvitsevat huomattavasti enemmän kaikenlaisia tukiohjelmia yms. Tämä taasen nostaa kustannuksia.
