Ylen aamussa oli uutinen Calaisista. Kerrottiin jo täällä aikoja sitten todettu, että kanaalin ylityksestä huutokaupoista kimpassa ostetuilla purtiloilla on tullut ilmiö. Yrittäjät pääasiassa iranilaisia. Haastateltiin iranilaista "pakolaista". Lähestyvä Brexit kiihdyttänyt yrittäjien määrää. Kalastajat sanoo, että heidän elinkeino vaarassa, koska läpsyt varastavat ja rikkovat veneitä.

Minulle uutta tuossa uutisessa oli vain kalastajien veneiden rikkominen. Miksi? Mikä hyöty läpsyn tuhota vene. Alkoiko muumittaa, kun ei saanut varastettua, vai? Tästä ilmiöstä pitää yrittää tonkia lisää.

Ok, seuraava NY timesin juttu selventää asioita. Ilmeisesti iranilaiset ovat ainoita, joilla on varaa maksaa jopa 100.000 euron hinta ylitysyrityksestä. Veneet ottavat vahinkoa siinä, kun läpsyt yrittää niihin sisään. Murtaumiskeinot eivät niin hellävaraisia. Yllä arvailemani meni lähelle, veneteknikot tuhoavat osan paattien moottoreista käynnistysyrityksillään.

The town, the largest fish-processing center in Europe, depends on its fleet for survival, so any threat to the boats is taken seriously. Some of the fishermen are vowing to sit up all night in their boats, cradling their guns.

"It's the worry above all," Ms. Arnout said. "We're all very concerned about it around here."

As other routes to Britain are blocked — the tunnel at Calais is sealed up tight and French officials have taken a tough line on the camps that once flourished at its edges, regularly dispersing them — the frigid, treacherous waters of the channel beckon to the desperate migrants.

Most of those attempting the crossing by boat are Iranians, according to officials, in part because they have the means to pay the hefty fees demanded. In one recent case, a group of the migrants paid their smuggler 100,000 euros, around $115,000, officials said.

In a marine police photograph of a rescue off Calais on Dec. 27, one man is clad in a T-shirt. Five of the 11 rescued had hypothermia.

So far, there have been no reported deaths from the crossings, but Mr. Bonnafous thinks it is only a matter of time. And as news of the successful crossings reaches more migrants, the number of attempts is likely to rise, increasing the odds of fatalities. There were 78 crossings and attempts last year, with the number spiking in November and December.

A boat taking what Mr. Bonnafous calls an "erratic" course will trigger an alarm among the rescuers, although it is often the migrants themselves who call the emergency number and ask to be rescued.

The distress calls often come in the early morning hours, leaving the rescue teams the nightmare task of finding the small boats in the dark, "like looking for a needle in a haystack," Mr. Bonnafous said.

French authorities have put up a 10-foot wall at a petrol station in Calais to stop migrants using the lorries as a way to get to Britain. 

The barrier has been installed at a Total petrol station in the French port city which had become a magnet for people smugglers.

The traffickers had been using it to get hundreds of people on to lorries heading for the town's ferry port, where boats head for England every day.

'The construction of the wall is explained by the presence of migrants and people smugglers on this site,' said local prefect Fabien Sudry.

He said it was a place where criminals 'meet and take advantage of this station near the port to get migrants on to trucks.'

It is believed to be the first time that an entire wall aimed at stopping migration to Britain has been built alongside a problem area at such short notice.

18 suspected migrants detained after separate UK landings

Eighteen suspected migrants are being held by immigration officials after arriving on UK shores in separate landings.

At around 7am, Border Force agents received notification of six men and an inflatable boat on a beach in Kingsdown, Kent.

It appeared the dinghy had been left on the beach overnight, dumped alongside life-jackets and canisters of fuel.

There was evidence of a further nighttime landing at Warren Beach in Folkestone, where another abandoned dinghy was sighted by a Sky News helicopter.

Two men identifying themselves as migrants were detained at Folkestone police station and later transferred to immigration officials.

Meanwhile, at 9.30am Border Force agents intercepted a dinghy containing suspected migrants off the coast of Dover and towed it to shore.

Officials were seen helping the suspected migrants disembark and wrapping them in blankets.

In all, at least a dozen of the 18 men who arrived in the UK identified as Iranian, while at least one said they were Iraqi.

Another 23 migrants have been picked up from boats off the Kent coast, bringing the total over the weekend to 39.

A Border Force cutter and a coastal patrol vessel took 15 people from an inflatable late on Sunday and another eight in the early hours of Monday.

All were taken to Dover, where they were given medical checks before being handed over to immigration officials.

Earlier on Sunday 16 migrants - most of whom said they were Iranian - were picked up off the Kent coast.

The Home Office said the nationalities of the people detained in the latest incidents were not yet known.

Migrants attempting to enter the UK illegally used to focus their efforts on the French port of Calais.

But following a crackdown there, they have spread their efforts out to ferry ports across Europe, as far afield as northern Spain.

BBC correspondent Colin Campbell spent a week visiting four different European ports to follow their trail.

Many of the people trying to get to the UK are economic migrants.

But an internal Home Office document seen by the BBC shows asylum claims have risen.

Channel migrants: Lorries still favoured route, border officers say

The number of migrants entering the UK in lorries is far greater than those crossing the Channel in dinghies, immigration officers have reported.

Lucy Moreton, general secretary of the Immigration Services Union, said preventing "lorry drops" was still the "day-to-day grind" for officers.

Six suspected migrants filmed climbing out the back of a lorry on the M25 were detained in Upminster on Friday.

A "major incident" was declared after 129 people entered by boat in December.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid vowed to re-deploy two Border Force vessels from the Mediterranean and the Royal Navy sent HMS Mersey to patrol the Channel.

Ms Moreton said: "The numbers coming over in small boats are only a small proportion compared to the number coming across in lorries.

"There is a lot of focus on small boats, but the day-to-day grind is still the lorries."

A BBC investigation has found that migrants trying to enter the UK by lorry are spreading their efforts from Calais to ports across Europe.

"We know there are large numbers massing in other ports," Ms Moreton said.

A serving soldier whose life went 'into a downward spiral' when he witnessed his best friend being blown up in Afghanistan has been jailed for three years for smuggling migrants from the Calais Jungle into the UK in his car boot.

Kyle Harris was serving as a Lance Corporal in Germany when he agreed to bring 'one every Friday' into the UK through the Channel Tunnel while on weekend leave from his barracks.

The 30-year-old, who served two tours of duty Afghanistan's Helmand Province during his six-year army career, smuggled two migrants at a time, making them lie head to toe on top of each other and hiding them beneath his camouflage jacket and Army kit.

Harris was paid £5,000 per stowaway and involved in five planned smuggling trips over a five-week period, three of which were successful, a court heard today.

The court heard how Harris' life spiralled out of control during his second tour of Afghanistan when he witnessed his best friend, Private Tom Lake, being killed by an improvised explosive device which left three others severely injured in November 2011.

He became withdrawn and was said by one officer to be 'fighting demons'. Harris never came to terms with his friend's death and turned to drink, drugs and online gambling, mounting up a debt of £30,000, the court was told.

His desperate money making ploy was eventually foiled when Border Force officers stopped Harris in a random check at Coquelles on May 6, 2016.

Car wash owner jailed for 10 years for smuggling migrants into UK from Calais Jungle

A Middlesbrough car wash owner has been jailed for 10 years for smuggling migrants into the UK from Calais alongside a soldier who was "desperate" for money.

Zinden Ahmed was also sentenced for possession with intent to supply a class A drug after around 136g (5oz) of high-purity cocaine with a street value of £13,600 was found at his home.

The 36-year-old dad-of-two has lived in the UK for 15 years and started off by recruiting Lance Corporal Kyle Harris to bring his brother Huner Ahmed into the UK.

But the pair soon set out on a "commercial" venture to bring other Kurds into Britain.

Hadi Hassan was used as a go-between to reach out to migrants in the camps and arrange the crossings, Maidstone Crown Court heard on Friday.

The 35-year-old was jailed for two years and eight months after being brought back to the UK from Turkey to face the charges.

The conspiracy took place between March and May 2016.

Andrew Hill, defending Ahmed, said he was a hard-working man who became "embroiled in criminality" after fulfilling his quest to bring his brother into the UK.

His co-conspirator, Harris, brought three people into the country to Nottingham, Peterborough and Banbury during several trips in April after arranging the details over text.

Ahmed arranged to pay Harris £2,500 in advance and a further £2,500 once each of the migrants had been delivered to the UK.

Romanian people smugglers who hid eight Afghan migrants including three children and a baby in a secret compartment in the back of a van are jailed for a total of almost 20 years

Migrant smugglers hid eight people, including four young children, in a hot, cramped secret compartment in the back of a van in a failed bid to cross the UK border.

The five Romanians were all jailed at Canterbury Crown Court today after Border Force officers described the 'unbearable' heat inside the hidden compartment.

The hidden people were found after a Mercedes Sprinter van was stopped at UK passport control at the entrance to the Channel Tunnel in Coquelles, France, on August 17.

Driver Dumitru-Daniel Cojanu told officers he was travelling to London for a couple of days with his passenger Camelia-Florina Teleaga, who said she was visiting her sister.

The pair were jailed alongside three passengers, Matei Daniel Nedelcu, Ion-Aurelian Apostol and Ionut-Catalin Vasilica.

When searching the boot of the van, officers found a partition hidden under carpet and discovered two men, two women and four children aged between 10 months and seven years old.

Apostol, 34, of Wembley, north London, was convicted by a jury and jailed for six years. The others all pleaded guilty.

Cojanu, 24, who also lived in Wembley, was handed a sentence of three years and nine months.

Nedelcu, 25, living in Cardiff, was jailed for three years and four months, while Vasilica, 25, and Teleaga, 30, both of no fixed address, were each handed custodial sentences of three years and two months.

Deportation fiasco: Nearly 300 Iranian migrants have sneaked into the UK via small boats since November... but we've sent back fewer than TEN

Hundreds of Iranian migrants who have illegally sailed in small boats to England from France have not been deported, it emerged last night.

Fewer than ten of those who have made the 22-mile journey across the Channel have been kicked out, according to Home Office figures.

Most are still in migrant centres in the Midlands and northern England despite Government promises that they would be swiftly returned to France as a 'safe country' in which to claim asylum.

In December, Home Secretary Sajid Javid said the dramatic spike in migrants arriving on beaches in Kent was a 'major incident'.

A total of 294 migrants, the vast majority from Iran, have reached the UK since November. On Christmas Day alone, 40 people in five boats arrived at beaches near Dover, and a further 39 arrived over one weekend in January.

But one of the handful successfully deported is young Iranian Kameh Tamjedi, who illegally arrived in the UK on Christmas Day in a small dinghy from northern France. He is thought to be the only one of the 40 who arrived on Christmas Day to have been sent back.

The Daily Mail found him this week shivering in a small green charity tent on a strip of waste land back in the French port town of Calais. He and a fellow Iranian, 25-year-old Bahman, were on the last of the five boats to arrive on Christmas morning.

Special Report: ITV Calendar goes inside the Calais migrant camps

For a two-part special on ITV Calendar, Michael Billington travelled to the makeshift camps in Calais of migrants – many of whom are desperate to come to the UK.

In Part One (first transmitted: 12 February 2019), we follow Rob Lawrie, the aid volunteer from Guiseley, near Leeds. Three years ago he was spared jail by a French court, after trying to smuggle a young migrant into the UK.

Despite his criminal conviction he continues to work with migrants, delivering aid on an almost weekly basis.

In Part Two (first transmitted: 13 February 2019), we hear from the migrants themselves who believe they can build a new life in the UK.

Ten suspected migrants are picked up off the coast of Dover as authorities brace for the number attempting the crossing to rocket in warmer weather

Ten suspected migrants were picked up off the Dover coast in the early hours of today as authorities brace themselves for more attempting to cross the Channel as the weather warms up.

A boat was spotted at the entrance to Dover Port at 2.15am when HMC Vigilant was sent to the scene where six people were discovered and brought to the Dover shore.

They have been handed to immigration officials for interview.

Then, around 4.30am, the Dover coastguard was alerted to a second sighting of a RHIB in the Channel which was found and then escorted to Dover by CPV Hunter.

The four people on board were also passed to immigration officials.

All ten people were found to be medically well and their nationalities have not yet been established.

It is the first discovery of migrants since January 21 when a total of 23 migrants were picked up in two separate incidents.

Ahmad, his wife and his two children, Maryam, seven, and Benjamin, two, have attempted the perilous journey across the English Channel – one of the world's busiest shipping lanes – three times.

They were stopped on the beach by police during their first attempt, and made it 1km offshore the second time before waves started to sink their boat and they were forced to swim back.

On a third occasion, just before Christmas, they travelled about 10km (6.2 miles) in a fishing boat before armed police intercepted them.

The family were taken to hospital in Calais after their ordeal.

Ahmad, 36, said he will not try to get to England by boat again because it is too dangerous and distressing for his daughter, who is now being seen twice a week by a psychologist.

Referring to it as the 'Jungle' – the name given to the large migrant camp demolished in 2016 – he said: "Here is hell in the jungle, hell. Not for living with a family, not for living with my daughter, my son, here (is) very, very dangerous in the jungle."

While he speaks some English, Ahmad said he will "happily" live in any country that will accept him and his family.

He said his asylum claim was rejected in Denmark, and he has been told by lawyers in France that he could be sent back there.

He said he is afraid the family will then be deported to Iran, which he left due to fearing for his safety after converting to Christianity.

But, with no money, all he can do is wait.

We have no home, but there is no other choice - we are forced to go back.
He said: "I am happy to go anywhere where they accept me. I need only one country (to accept me and not send me back to Denmark) – no problem for me going to Africa, going to Australia, going to Japan."

Clare Moseley, from charity Care4Calais which has been helping the family, said their plight was a symptom of a system that was "quite widely" seen as not working.

The Dublin Regulation, which covers the EU, aims to prevent multiple asylum applications, known as "asylum-shopping", by making one country responsible for an asylum application.

She said: "We are ending up more and more now with people wandering around Europe who haven't been able to claim asylum (successfully) but are stopped from making a further claim because of the Dublin laws."
