FRENCH fishermen have launched a "disgraceful" attack on their British counterparts in a sign of the post-Brexit battles to come. The incident this morning saw 35 French fishing boats sail from Normandy to encircle five British craft fishing for scallops in international waters in the English Channel.

The attack, which breaks EU and international law, took place on the French side of the Channel but in a part of it which will remain open to international space even after Brexit.

It did not take place in the 12-mile national exclusion zones on the French or British sides.

Rahtialus Grande Tema oli matkalla Nigerian Lagoksesta Britannian Tilburyyn. Aiemmin matkalla miehistö oli löytänyt neljä salamatkustajaa, jotka he olivat lukinneet hyttiin.

Special forces retake cargo ship after stowaways threatened staff

Four stowaways who allegedly threatened the crew of a cargo ship with armed bars were detained by police on Friday night after an operation to secure the vessel was launched off the Kent coast.

The crew of Grande Tema, en route from Lagos in Nigeria to Tilbury in ­Essex, locked themselves on the bridge after the stowaways they had discovered broke free from a cabin and started to make their demands.

The men had allegedly demanded the crew sail close to the British coast so they could jump off and swim ashore.

The incident came to an end after Royal Navy helicopters were deployed amid reports that elite Special Boast Service commandos had been deployed to carry out the operation.

Essex Police, which oversaw the operation, said: "We have secured a vessel in the Thames Estuary. Four men have been detained under the Immigration Act".

They said the vessel was boarded at around 11pm and would be brought to the Port of Tilbury to dock.

According to MarineTraffic.com, the Grande Tema docked at Tilbury at  4.24am.

Thirteen migrants rescued off coast of Walmer in Kent

A boat carrying 13 people thought to be migrants has been picked up off the coast of Kent.

Lifeboats and the coastguard helicopter were involved in the rescue operation two miles from Walmer.

Those on board were not thought to be wearing life jackets when they were rescued. They were brought to shore at about 04:30 GMT, the BBC understands.

HM Coastguard confirmed it was assisting Border Force officials.

Iranian family who paid £4,000 to be smuggled across Europe rescued from the Channel, Telegraph reveals

A two-year-old boy and his seven-year-old sister were among a group of 16 migrants rescued in the English Channel on Sunday morning, the Telegraph can reveal.

After spending five months in a migrant camp in Calais, the children, Brinyamin and Maryam, along with their father Bahador Lorpor and his wife Shoku, attempted the perilous journey after paying smugglers £4,000.

However, they were intercepted by a French tug boat just six nautical miles (11km) off the shoreline of Boulogne-sur-Mer after attempting to cross the busy waterway in a stolen fishing boat.

Border Force were involved in five separate instances involving people presenting as Iraqi, Iranian and Afghan, the Home Office said.

A girl was among eight people who arrived in Folkestone, Kent, at around 2.40am.

A child was also one of 13 people on board a dinghy assisted by Border Force off the coast of Deal, Kent, shortly before 7am.

Separately, a Border Force cutter was deployed at 5.50am to the Channel to help a dinghy which was travelling towards the UK with seven men and a woman onboard.

All of those involved underwent a medical assessment and the adults have been transferred to immigration officials to be interviewed.

The children will come under the care of social services, officials said.

In another incident in French waters, nine migrants were rescued and are now in the UK after the engine of the vessel they were travelling in failed.

Nine migrants including three children were detained in Kent last night after crossing the English Channel in a dinghy, and four were picked up in a small boat off Dover this morning.

It brings the total number of people caught trying to come into the UK illegally over the Christmas period to more than fifty.

RNLI Lifeboats were scrambled at 12.45am today to reports that a small RIB (rigid-hulled inflatable boat) was in the water off the coast of Folkestone.

A coastguard helicopter illuminating the scene by searchlight helped RNLI volunteers from Littlestone find the boat, which by the time they arrived was ashore at Sandgate, just west of Folkestone.

Charlie Davies, operations manager of RNLI Liuttlestone, told MailOnline that his crew found the dinghy on the beach, adding: 'The persons on the rib had gone ashore, and were apprehended by Border Force and Kent Police'.

Britain's Immigration Minister Caroline Nokes said Thursday that a spike in migrants crossing the Channel by boat was "deeply concerning", after dozens of people were rescued overnight.

British border officials found 23 Iranians in three locations in Kent on England's southeast coast early Thursday, hours after French maritime authorities intercepted 11 migrants in a small boat near Sangatte.

"The number of incidents over recent days is deeply concerning," said Nokes.

"Some of this is clearly facilitated by organised crime groups while other attempts appear to be opportunistic."

Nine Iranians, including three children, were the first to be found early Thursday on a beach near the Kent port town of Folkstone, after sailing from northern France in a 13-foot (four-metre) inflatable boat.

Matt Crittenden, of the Littlestone-on-Sea lifeboat station, told AFP its search and rescue helicopter had spotted them and alerted police.

"We realised they were safe and sound, and the police took over," he said.

Britain's interior ministry said each migrant had been given medical assessments.

"All of the adults have been transferred to immigration officials for interview and the three minors have been transferred to the care of social services," it added.

The ministry said two more boats were discovered at around 8:30am (0830 GMT), both near the port of Dover, carrying 14 Iranian males.

Why have so many boats set off for the coast of Kent? What can be done to stop it? And why are all the occupants apparently from the Middle Eastern country?

The answer to the last question could lie 1,200 miles away in the Serbian capital of Belgrade.

Miodrag Ćakić, chief executive of Refugee Aid Serbia, which monitors migration through the Balkans, believes migrants arriving in the UK are among the thousands who flew into Serbia after the country began offering visa-free access to Iranians in August last year.

The move was ostensibly intended to increase tourism and trade between Iran, the world's 25th largest economy, and Serbia, the 90th.

The visa scheme - which attracted allegations it was being abused by migrants seeking access to western Europe - ended on 17 October, by which time some 40,000 Iranians were said to have flown to the Balkan nation.

It is unknown how many returned home, but according to the Associated Press, local media reported that direct flights from Tehran to Belgrade had been arriving full and returning empty.

According to Info Park, a refugee support centre in Belgrade, Serbian police estimate the number of Iranians who failed to return at 12,000.

Maya Konforti, of L'Auberge des Migrants, a refugee support group in Calais, described the attempted crossings as "the speciality of Iranians".

"Crossing by boat can only be done by people who have some money. Africans don't have any left by the time they arrive in Calais," she said.

"There is a new influx of Iranians arriving in Calais. They seem to be the only ones who both dare to do it and find the means to do so."

Mr Ćakić suggested Iranians heading for Kent had entered the EU via Serbia.

"I don't see any other explanation. Serbia was the only country on the Balkan Route that had a significant number of Iranians."

The Church of England has urged greater compassion in the migration debate as new figures revealed an influx of lone child refugees among the boatloads of people crossing the Channel.

As Sajid Javid faced calls by Tory MPs to deploy the Royal Navy to stop migrants reaching the UK, the Right Rev Trevor Willmott, bishop of Dover, said the home secretary needed to remember that those attempting the perilous crossing were people in need.

"It is crucial that we all remember that we are dealing with human beings here," said the bishop, speaking with the backing of the church. "Across the nation, we have been celebrating the season of hope and goodwill as we remember Christ's birth – let's not forget so soon that every person is precious."

Armed gangs are smuggling ­children into Britain on flimsy boats for £2,500-a-head, a Sunday Mirror investigation reveals.

An Iranian man tells Sky News that "everywhere is blocked now" and that trying to cross the Channel is "very dangerous and risky".

An Iranian man hoping to reach Britain has told Sky News that migrants are being picked up by the French authorities at sea - and he has seen them returning to camps in Calais.

The French authorities have been accused of not doing enough to prevent migrants being smuggled across the Channel.

But the man, who did not want to be named, said: "I know of some who were very near the UK (waters), just one kilometre away, and the French police brought them back to Calais.

"Everywhere is blocked now. I know people who have been picked up by the French coastguard. They bring them back to camp. They are very unhappy because they lose money and they don't know how to try again.

"It's very dangerous and risky."

Six Iranian men have been detained on a beach in Kent after crossing the Channel in a dinghy.

Border Force officers found the group with a rigid-hulled inflatable boat on a beach at Kingsdown, near Deal, at 07:30 GMT.

The Home Office said the migrants, now known to be Iranian nationals, had been given a medical assessment and transferred to immigration officials.

More than 220 people have attempted the crossing in small boats since November.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid has returned to the UK after cutting short a family holiday to deal with the rising number of migrant crossings, which he has declared a "major incident".

'We would rather die at sea than go back to France,' say migrants in Calais

Late on Boxing day evening, Mahmood, a 38-year-old Iranian migrant living in a tent in Calais, received a text. It was on.

As soon as £3,000 was put 'on hold' with the smugglers, Mahmood would be given a pickup point, from where he would be taken to a boat. Destination, Britain.

His brother back in Iran moved the money, but he only pays if Mahmood arrives in the UK.

Shortly afterwards Mahmood's phone buzzed again. He studied a map and started walking.

Accompanied by four friends, he found a man waiting in a car, and jumped in.

Forty minutes later, almost certainly to the west of Calais, the group was deposited on a beach and told to get into a small dinghy by a smuggling gang member who they believe was from Afghanistan.

The dinghy was designed for seven people, but that night, eleven migrants got on board. A twelfth man - a smuggling gang member who called himself Bruce Lee because of his Asian appearance, would be the driver.

The migrants claim that 'Bruce Lee,' navigated the boat through French waters and halfway across the channel, before jumping onto a second boat that was shadowing them.

He then brandished a pistol, told them to get on their way and headed back to France.

Ingrid Parrot, from the French Naval headquarters for the Channel and North Sea, said: "I have never seen that method before, but at this point, unfortunately nothing surprises me."

Back out in the Channel, Mahmood's boat was spotted by multiple fishing vessels and ferries in the busy waterway. A call was put in to the French maritime operation centre and a police coastguard boat called Athos was dispatched to intercept the small dinghy.

It had travelled some 15 nautical miles (28km) north west of Calais, towards Britain.

For scale, the shortest distance across the Channel is 18 nautical miles (33km).

"When we were picked up, I thought they were British. I thought we had made it," said a dejected Mahmood back in the Calais camp yesterday.

"I couldn't believe it. How could a French boat go that close to Britain," he added.

"We were told that once we were in British waters, that we would be ok. That we would make it to the UK."

Once onboard the Athos, Mahmood and his fellow travellers say they were put in handcuffs by the maritime police and taken back to France.

Border Force has intercepted 12 suspected migrants, including a 10-year-old boy, on the coast this morning.

The group, also consisting of two women, presented themselves as Iranian nationals after being detained in Coast Drive in Greatstone.

It comes after six Iranian men were also found on a beach near Dover on Sunday.

A Home Office spokesperson said: "Border Force was contacted by Kent Police at around 8.25am, today, Monday 31 December. Border Force officers were deployed to assist with a group of 12 migrants at Greatstone, Kent.

"The group consisted of nine men, two women and 10-year-old child. They have presented themselves as Iranian nationals.

"They all received a medical assessment and have now been transferred to immigration officials for interview."

Eye-witness Susan Pilcher, 47, said the dinghy's small size illustrated how "desperate" the migrants were.

She said: "Border Force were emptying the boat, there were clothes and petrol cans inside, the boat was tiny, like something you would take out snorkelling.

Police destroyed three makeshift camps outside Calais today as the deepening English Channel migrant crisis forced Sajid Javid to perform a humiliating U-turn.

Refugee charity Auberge des Migrants posted a picture of French officers clearing the sites, tweeting: 'On January 1, 2019, nothing has changed in Calais.'

More than 120 migrants have been caught crossing from France over the festive period, as MPs called for more to be done to bring the crisis under control.

It comes as the Home Secretary, already forced to cut short his safari holiday this week, bowed to pressure from Tory MPs to recall two ships to British waters.

He had previously insisted the move was a risk and aides repeatedly rejected the idea, saying it might encourage more migrants to make the dangerous crossing.

His about-face means that two Border Force cutters will be brought back from the Mediterranean to bolster the lone ship on patrol in the Straits of Dover.

French authorities have accused 14 migrants of attempting to steal a fishing trawler at the Channel port of Boulogne.

A statement from the National Crime Agency (NCA) said: 'NCA officers have arrested a 33-year-old Iranian national and a 24-year-old British man in Manchester, on suspicion of arranging the illegal movement of migrants across the English Channel into the UK.

France will heighten security at its northern ports and increase surveillance along beaches to counter the rise in migrants trying to cross the English Channel to reach Britain, its interior minister said on Friday.

More than 500 migrants, most Iranian, tried to cross the narrow stretch of water, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, during 2018, French Interior Ministry data showed.

Some 276 migrants reached British waters while the French authorities thwarted the attempts of another 228. More than 80 percent of the crossings were attempted in December.

Migrant crossings: UK government funding drones to spot boats leaving French coast

Britain is paying for drones to patrol the coast of France as part of efforts to prevent migrants attempting to cross the Channel, the French government has said.

Christophe Castaner, the French interior minister, revealed that 71 attempted boat crossings were recorded in 2018 compared to just 12 the previous year.

More than 80 per cent of launches came in November and December alone, with the influx declared a "major incident" by the home secretary. French authorities intercepted 31 vessels and 40 reached the UK in 2018.

The French interior ministry said that in a phone call with his counterpart, Sajid Javid reiterated the UK's commitment to "financial support for the deployment of modern techniques to detect and prevent attempted irregular sea departures, including drones, radar and video surveillance".

Channel migrants 'could be sent straight back to France to claim asylum' under EU rules if they were there for three months before trying to get into Britain

Channel migrants could sent straight back to France under EU rules even if they are picked up in UK waters, it emerged today.

Sources at the Home Office revealed talks are underway to exploit the so-called Dublin regulations that police asylum claims across Europe.

They say even if someone has been in an EU country for three months, the state they claim asylum in can send them back - potentially meaning Britain can return those who successfully sail across the Channel to France.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid is expected to discuss the move with his French counterpart Christophe Castaner next week. 

International law usually allows people to make an asylum claim in Britain when they get here, with a right to have the claim considered in this country.

The move to use Dublin would be the latest move to discourage migrants from trying to make the dangerous crossing from France after a surge in numbers.

Two groups of migrants have been detained following a search when an empty boat was found on a Kent beach.

The BBC understands one group was discovered by Border Force on a nearby road in Dungeness, while three migrants were detained in Lydd.

HM Coastguard led an initial search of the area when a dinghy was discovered on the shore at around 08:00 GMT.

It contained six life jackets, personal possessions and a milk carton cut to be used to bail out water.

One person was taken to hospital for treatment after paramedics were called to Dungeness at 12:20 GMT.

Bulgarian citizen Aldin N. (41) was handed to Belgium authorities on suspicion of leading an organised crime group for illegal trafficking of migrants to the UK, Belgian media reported on January 7, reports BNT.

According to the investigation, he managed car repair shops in Belgium, where concealments were built and placed into vehicles. The concealments could fit up to nine migrants whose journeys usually started from Afghanistan or Pakistan, crossed Turkey and Bulgaria to reach Western Europe and transfer to the British coast.

The investigation began in 2016 at the British port of Dover, where customs officers suspected a lorry with a Bulgarian registration. The external volume of the vehicle did not correspond to the internal cargo cavity, so the customs officers requested additional inspection. Thus they found five people in a concealment, including three underage children. A warning was issued to European offices to monitor such fraud attempts.

For transportation from the Bulgarian-Turkish border to Great Britain, migrants paid 10,000 euros each. Transferring a migrant from France to the UK cost 1,300 euros, the statement says.

Activists heckled by anti-immigration group over recent boat crossings from France

Anti-racism campaigners led chants welcoming refugees to the UK at a gathering in Ramsgate on Sunday, as divisions emerge in Kent over the so-called migrant crisis.

Kent Anti-Racism Network (KARN) organised the vigil at the obelisk monument in the seaside town's harbour on Sunday.

Overlooking a Border Force patrol boat, campaigners expressed their concern for the welfare of migrants attempting to cross the English Channel in small boats, brandishing banners and shouting: "Say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here."

Activists were met by a handful of anti-immigration hecklers opposed to the sentiment, a group described by those gathered as "local EDL/BNP supporters". Their taunts included: "Why are you letting criminals into our country?"

Bernadette Fisher, a Labour councillor in the seaside town of Whitstable, told the crowd: "We are all a product of immigration."

She added: "We are our brother's keeper, I truly believe that in my heart. We need to care for these people, they are living in destitution, we just need to help."

A Bulgarian TIR truck caught fire on a highway near the French town of Calais, the Bulgarian news agency BTA reports, quoted by the Bulgarian National Radio.

The truck caught fire after the driver tried to drive through a roadblock put up by around 50 migrants, but failed. According to French media, after leaving the cabin, the driver, who is Bulgarian origin, was beaten by the migrants who escaped before the coming of the police. The driver has been taken to hospital.

A man has been charged with helping asylum seekers cross the Channel, after eight more migrants were rescued in the county off the coast this week.

The man, who has not yet been named, is expected to appear virtually in court today.

He is accused of facilitating illegal entry into the UK after a boat was found in Dungeness on Monday morning.

The Afghan fixer named Anam, 28, told our team that he helps set up speedboat crossings to the UK for £6,000 per person.

He said in Calais, France: "If police catch you, they never send you back. It's secure to go, no danger."

The National Crime Agency is investigating our findings.

Smugglers in Britain are sneaking migrants across the Channel with payments sent to a backstreet curry house.

The scam is being orchestrated by the Afghan "Mr Fix It" already booted out of the UK twice.

Anam charges would-be migrants £6,000 for a speedboat crossing and £2,500 to go in a three-metre dinghy.

The Calais-based fixer, who uses a UK mobile phone to run the illegal operation, claims to have helped 300 migrants get into Britain.

He boasted to undercover reporters how easy it was to get from Calais to Folkestone, Kent — and they would stay in the UK even if caught.

He scoffed: "Really, you just cross the water. Then if police catch you, no problem, they never send you back."
