Kuinka paljon uhreja olisikaan tullut, ellei paikalla olisi ollut poliiseja, jotka pystyivät neutraloimaan teroristin 9 sekunnissa?:

QuoteTRIAL STARTS AGAINST SUSPECT IN AMSTERDAM CS ATTACK

The trial against Jawed S., the man suspected of stabbing two American tourists at Amsterdam Central Station on August 31st last year, starts in the high security court in Amsterdam on Monday. The two victims will be present at the trial. The three police officers who stopped S.'s attack and arrested him will also speak in the trial, with their identities hidden for security reasons, RTL Nieuws and Nieuwsuur report.

Jawed S., 20, fled Afghanistan a few years ago and ended up in a shelter in Germany. It seems that he radicalized in the asylum center - an employee reported to the German security services that he noticed the man's appearance and behavior change. S. grew a beard and his posts on social media became increasingly radical, according to RTL. Every day he posted a video focused on the prophet Mohammed. PVV  leader Geert Wilders also made regular appearances on his Facebook timeline.

On August 31st last year, S. boarded a train to Amsterdam. His plan was to kill Wilders over a Mohammed cartoon contest the PVV leader was organizing, the Dutch authorities believe. S. arrived at Amsterdam Central Station at 11:15 a.m. For the next 45 minutes, he was seen wandering around the station. He was noticed by a police 'spotter' at the station - a police officer trained to recognize deviant behavior.

"There are a lot of small indicators that make you think: this is different than usual. This man had a bad energy. His whole attitude, his appearance, his glances. That made me feel like this person was planning something very intense", the police spotter, going by the fake name of Roel, said to Nieuwsuur. "People look at a police officer a few times every day. But this man did it in such a different, strange way that it triggered me. He lingered and looked at certain places, so I thought: we need to do something about this."

Roel made radio contact with his two colleagues at the station, going by the fake names Sam and Thijs, asking them to come to the station hall where he was keeping an eye on Jawed S. At that moment, at around 12:00 p.m., S. attacked two American tourists, who were standing with their backs to him.

"Even before we were there, panic arose at the information desk", Sam said to Nieuwsuur. "Out of the corner of my eye I saw someone running on the right side of the hall. He was holding a knife." Thijs said: "Then I saw the man stabbing around him and there was a lot of tumult and screams." He continued: "I immediately went into a kind of fighting mode. I drew my weapon and went after the suspect."

As S. posed an immediate threat to the people around him, officer Roel shot him in the lower body, hitting him in the hip. "I thought he wanted to make more victims. So at the time, he was a threat that needed to be eliminated", Roel said to the program. "I looked at his hands to see if I saw any igniters or wires. Because that was our biggest fear, that he had a bomb with him." Nine seconds after the attack started, S. was incapacitated.

QuoteAMSTERDAM CS STABBING: PROSECUTOR DEMANDS 25 YEARS IN PRISON

Prosecutors in the Netherlands called on judges in an Amsterdam courtroom to convict Jawed S. in the stabbings of two American tourists at Amsterdam Central Station. The prosecution service argued that the act was a premeditated attempt to murder, with terrorist purposes, justifying a maximum allowable prison sentence of 25 years.

"Jawed bears full responsibility for his actions. He doesn't run away from that," his attorney, Simon van der Woude, said in response. Van der Woude said that S. should receive a lighter sentence than the prosecutor wants because S. is relatively young with no prior convictions. He also called on the court to acquit his client of threatening the police officers involved in the incident, saying that he was not waving his knife specifically at the officers at the train station that day.

"Leave my religion alone," S. said in his own closing statement. "Otherwise you know what will happen."

The court will issue a verdict and sentence on October 14.

Earlier on Tuesday, the court heard from several witnesses. One of the three police officers who fired gunshots, taking down Jawed S. seconds after the stabbing in August 2018, now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), he said in a statement read by the judge during the second say of the trial against S. The wives of the two victims also spoke in court on Tuesday, AD reports.

On August 31st last year, S. stabbed two American tourists in Amsterdam Central Station, attacking them from behind. One was stabbed in the back. He sustained a spinal cord injury and is now confined to a wheel chair. The other was stabbed in the arm and torso and only barely survived the attack, after undergoing emergency surgery. He sustained severe nerve damage to his arm.

A police officer noticed S. shortly before the attack and called in backup. He and two colleagues overpowered S. within seconds after he started stabbing people. One officer shot him in the lower body to incapacitate him. During the first day of trial on Monday, S. said that he came to the Netherlands to kill "cruel and unfair" people, and that his only mistake was that he did not stab people who were from the Netherlands.

"The image of the two victims being stabbed is burned into my mind. I unwittingly I look back on the images. I do not have control over the incident, the incident has control over me", the police officer said in his statement, read in court on Tuesday.

"The photo of us is engraved in my memory. You are moaning on the floor. I am standing with my weapon drawn, my finger on the trigger, over your head. I could have killed you", the police officer said in his statement. The officer also called S., among other things, a "bastard", a "fool" and a "pathetic figure". He hopes S. spends the rest of his life in prison. "What a cowardly deed. May God damn you for what you have done."

QuoteDutch court convicts asylum-seeker in station terror attack

A Dutch court on Monday convicted an Afghan asylum-seeker and sentenced him to nearly 27 years imprisonment for stabbing two American tourists in a terror attack at Amsterdam's main railway station.

The 20-year-old man, identified by Dutch authorities as Jawed S, was shot by police shortly after he stabbed two 38-year-old American men at Amsterdam Central station on Aug. 31 last year.

Both victims survived but one was left partially paralyzed by the attack, Amsterdam District Court said in its written judgment.

The court convicted Jawed S. of attempted murder with a terrorist motive and sentenced him to the maximum possible 26 years and eight months.

It ruled that he traveled by train to the Netherlands from Germany, where his application for asylum was rejected, to avenge what he perceived as insults to Islam and did not know his victims were Americans.

During his trial, he "never showed any remorse and in fact repeatedly said he would do the same thing again if his religion were insulted," the court said in a statement.

The man was ordered to pay his two victims a total of more than 2.6 million euros ($2.9 million).
